My absolute favorite interpretation of this piece. I see this piece as someone falling apart and going through the pain of becoming whole again.

А Вы слышали, как играет сонату Жаклин Дю Пре? После неё всё остальное меркнет.

THIS VIOLINCELLO HAS THE RICHEST, MOST PROFOUND, AND COMFORTING SOUND IMAGINABLE.
THE PIANO ALSO BEING IN PERFECT SYNCRONIZATION WITH THE CELLO--BOTH BRILLIANT.

I disagree, Pau showed a masterclass of Victorian playing stile, too much aggidatos make this sonata sound too sweet.

The interpretation of Maisky is wonderful in that sense that he shoots the image of the nostalgic Brahms. His vision is lyric (what vibratos!) but fierce. This is the way how I feel this sonata. It seems me to be the Brahmian equivalent of the op. 69 of Beethoven. They are both in three movements, without slow movement ........

  • @richardamey3932

This is a visual as well as an aural feast. If you worship cello technique, go watch a masterclass and miss everything else. If you want great music, direct from a great mind and heart, stay, watch (appreciate the pianist too, cello lover) and be ready to take the hit via this fearless camera work that delivers such passion to us!
The complete involvement, control, attack and commitment of the players, not from a timid distance but close-up; the stirring, surging, mounting feeling, tossing us around like the sea with one great outpouring theme after another in mm1; the rewarding simultaneous views of both instruments, the stress and concentration of joint interpretation and projection. The delicate dancing in mm2, the vehement contrapuntal final race and sprint finish. It’s all there, in your face - including the sweat. And the remarkable texture and flow of Maisky’s shirt contributes to these very special 26 minutes.
I’m still getting my breath back! One of the most riveting performance videos I’ve seen of classical - and chamber music coverage this good even tops watching orchestral playing!
Good on you, Loft Music makers
