I stayed at the property of Around the Bend when it was Top of Georgia. I thought it was a beautiful place and I’m glad new owners have taken over and made it amazing 😊

    Your candidness is appreciated.
I do wish hikers would be more open about what they paid though. That being said with the understanding that I know prices can vary.
    Ballpark prices are helpful.
I have been told by 3 different male hikers that they saw prices cheaper for "pretty" girls and one guy I talked with said some hostels kind of size you up before giving you a price.
A woman I talked to said she asked some of the guys she was at a hostel with what they paid and all of them quoted higher prices than what she paid.
I talked to another woman who is around my age, she complained that shuttles were frequently offered to young women for free and also low prices.
She told me no such offers were extended to her.
She also mentioned that she shared a shuttle with a trio, 2 young female hikers and their male companion.
During the ride they shared what they had paid and they all paid 20 dollars less than her.
When she confronted the driver she said he got, "scarily gruff". Her words.
I have no way of knowing if any of these people were telling me the truth so there's that.
I just wish more hikers would share cost information.

      @hikingdancer  Год назад +1

You know I never noticed a cost discrepancy with male vs female hikers but I wouldn’t be surprised if it existed. Shuttles vary tremendously. Some are donation based only, and some will charge you extraordinary amounts just to get 2 miles into town.

thank you for making this video. I hiked with my son, (Vegas Rob and Sin City) last year just like you, from Springer Mt. to Harper's Ferry; then I had to get back to work. We stayed at almost all hostels you talk about. SO much fun.-- and I agree with your ratings. If anyone has the chance to do this experience I'd strongly recommend it.

I know Station 19E is liked by many, but I stayed just down the street is Mountain Harbor. A solid 3 maybe 3.5 due to the breakfast they put out. Lady Di's breakfast was good, but Mountain Harbor put her's to shame.

Sounds like a couple of those places mistook "hostel" for "hostile." Standing Bear must've had a bad batch of flour if both the biscuits and the gravy were no good. Regarding Lady Di, I wonder how much time must pass before one is known as a "former thru-hiker"....hmmm...... Thank you, as always!

Great info as always! As a thru hiker wannabe I'm taking mental notes for future reference. Wood's Hole and Angel's Rest are just down the road from me. I've been following a number of 2023 AT hikers, and I *think* Uncle Johnny's is the one that has new ownership this year, and much quieter now. One hiker who stayed at Standing Bear said that there was a lot of expired food in their resupply store.

I haven't heard anything about Elmer's in Hot Springs lately. He's been there forever in an old Victorian house. It's like a museum inside, you want to whisper as you explore it. Elmer is also known for his gourmet vegetarian dinners. Guess he appeals more to an older crowd these days, but until Laughing Heart opened, he was the only deal in town. Too bad about NOC gouging hikers. Bunks used to be $30 but that was nearly 10 years ago the last time I stayed there.

Do you have to make reservations at AT hostels, or are they first-come-first-serve? I hope that they are not like modern hotels, which require. I hope that they are just there and open to people who need them. I guess, I wish hostels were like trail magic, just there for people.
