Seamrippin': We are NOT Amazon!

  • Seamrippin' is a series that I occasionally produce. It's dependent upon hot topics in the artisan world, usually bag making or general sewing. This isn't fully representative of my content. I just like to pop off every now and again, because I have the privilege of this not being my sole source of income.

Ohhhhh yes! I have dealt with this a couple times-after one year the cork on a bag bottom was showing some wear. The woman used it every day. She showed it to me “just so you know”- as if it were a flawed product. Another woman, after 2 years, pointed out a snap whose disk had come off (don’t know what those disks for prongs are called). I did offer to fix it cuz she’s a friend. My most recent experience was making three bags for my veterinarian before one of them finally passed muster. After a couple weeks she reported that the swivel hook was squeaking! I will be calling her at 3 AM if my cat sneezes, you better believe it.

I had a customer that bought one of my bags from a consignment shop…so she was the second hand owner of the bag. Tried to get me to repair it. Tried to tell me the bag was just a couple of years old. I knew exactly how old that bag was from the textile I used. It was about ten years old. I kept responding with the facts. She gave up 😂

💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 yes! 🙌 I have had customers that act like they did me a favor by purchasing and then expected me to be at their beck and call while they abuse the bag. I bought the material. I spent the time to make it. I’ve done my part. I try so hard to have good customer service. But people abuse it and I have to go scream into a pillow.

As a woman in the tech industry also and now launching into the wide blue yonder of bag making myself, the fine art of that email was nothing but brilliance and gives me hope that I can traverse the waters of selling my products the same way as I handled tech support customers for 20+ years! Love your channel and all the awesome content, it has been SO incredibly helpful and hysterical at the same time!!

I started adding a large blue card stock tag that is attached to the D-rings that states, "Do not hang heavy objects from the D- ring tabs". Also I reinforce them with one or two rivets depending on the size of the bag. Good grief. And thanks for addresses what our minds are silently saying, while we smile politely at such individuals.

I tell people that if the bag fails in the first few months due to seams or zipper issues to let me know and I can replace it with the same a similar fabric (most of my bags are limited runs because I like to use unique fabrics that are not always available to buy).
I also let them know that everything is double stitched at all the seams and zipper so there shouldn't be a problem. I also let them know how to care for the bag (if it can be washed or should just be spot cleaned etc.)
I've not had anyone reach out yet for a replacement.

What a great point!!! Here’s my story….get coffee/tea/whiskey….I purchased a beautiful hand crafted felted bag at the Sheep and Wool Festival…pre Pandemic. Used the bag almost ALL THE TIME. Then, maaaaybe a few years later the hardware on the strap broke. Oh well undaunted, I was using the bag, so stuff happens. I’ll see if I could get a strap somewhere in the Garment District NYC or I can now go to the Sheep & Wool festival now 2 years later and find the artist….I WILL BUY A STRAP…I WILL BUY A STRAP!!! I found the artist, explaining the issue and as I got my wallet out…she happily handed me a strap! Never expected that!
I agree with all of your advice. In my case, I had no expectations that she should be responsible for that strap for a bag that I was using for almost 3 years.
Thanks for you advice and thanks for the laughs.
PS same kind of thing happened with Kohler…but this is a very different kind of company….they can replace parts for life!

So many people have what I call a false sense of entitlement. True entitlement is fine because it simply means a right under the law. But there are people that think they are privileged and are old things they are not owed. I don't know how we turn this around, but we need to instill a sense of responsibility and common sense.

I don't sell bags, but I do hand out grocery and totes for gifts for friends. They come with 90 days parts and labor. I've had three come back for repairs outside warranty for reasons that did not have to do with quality. I fixed one. The other two are still waiting after a way looooong time.

  • @Jaded6911

The key is to stay firm in your guarantee. It's ok to say no. We aren't high end either. They didn't spend thousands on a bag to get that type of warranty. I would've her to buy another bag or move around too. Thank you for this video. I like these. Do more.

I think any repair/replacement policy needs to be spelled out and it seems this person did. Many handmade or artisan companies I shop at do free lifetime repairs, within reason, such as the product breaking during normal use and not being thrown into a shredder. But on the other side, those things are usually 2 to 7 times as much as they would be at a big box store.
With this "promise" trend over the last decade, I think a small amount of people just expect all stores to do this for them.
