For women life is simple as attractiveness and femininity, at least on an aesthetic level, are always one in the same.

      @hommefataltaemin 5 лет назад +70

      I don’t really get this line of thinking that you have. Pls correct me if I’m wrong, this is just my thoughts on the matter. Women can 100% be pro choice, and still think that body hair is gross. They can still think that women have the CHOICE to shave or not shave, but they can still personally find it gross themselves. For instance, many women I know are pro choice, but would NEVER themselves get an abortion. They just think that women have the right to CHOOSE. I believe it is a similar view on the subject of shaving. Just because you believe that someone should be completely in control of their own body doesn’t mean you have to personally like everything that they then choose to do with it.

    • @Toxihex
      @Toxihex 5 лет назад +15

      @@hommefataltaemin Absolutely. You can't control what you're grossed out by. It's not hypocritical to be tolerant, because tolerance is when you don't fully agree with something yet respect people's right to do it if it harms no one, opposed to accepting something you previously didn't agree with as most people seem to think. Assuming others are telling you what to choose/do if they're voicing a negative opinion about something you happen to choose/do means your life and choices are largely dictated by what others think and you want those of others to be dictated by what you think. That type of people feel like there is only place in this world for one opinion and everything that differs from it is harmful in one shape or another.
      I personally don't like bodily hair on anyone, I've physically gagged a few times when I have been in bikini and noticed I left out a hair or two on my bikini line. I didn't choose to, I just did as a reflex. I also find facial hair repulsive (with the exception of maybe a goatee if the person looks good with it) and bodily hair too, especially on the armpits and the chest, turns me off immediately. That, however, doesn't mean I give two fucks about whether or not someone I have absolutely no intentions of hooking up with has any sort of hair on them. Sure, it will disgust me if it's overgrown armpit hair, but so do many things every day for every single person. You can't expect to fit everyone's standards and there isn't a single one-fits-all solution.

      Exactly. Also when women have lots of hair on their body it’s ‘gross’ but when they have lots on their head it’s fine. Like they both get washed. In fact, most people don’t wash the hair on their head anyway. Yet it’s less gross than on your body which probably gets washed alot more.

    I hate the argument that ‘shaving doesn’t hurt’. I have thick hair genes. Where most people have one hair per follicle, I have two-three. Shaving/waxing (downstairs especially) is extremely painful. Many follicles become red and ingrown within a day, I literally have pry each hair out of my own skin, which causes scarring. a panicked teenage me went to the nhs website to see what I could do about it, and the only treatment they had was to ‘stop shaving/waxing’.
    That solution made me want to cry honestly.

      I have this as well. It’s called Pili Multigemini and it’s in my bikini area. I have a very high pain tolerance, but waxing/sugaring was excruciating. Shaving is impossible because of folliculitis that was also painful and I’d be left with redness and what looked like tiny zits. I’d be ok the day I shaved but weeks after that it was brutal. It made it very hard to plan anything pool/beach related in public. And the ingrown hairs with both waxing and shaving were brutal. I bought everything on the market to help and nothing worked. Now I just trim very closely and any my bikini line I use an electric shaver called the Seiko Cleancut. You can do your entire area and it won’t cut you, it’s as close as shaving and it doesn’t aggravate my skin! No more bumps or ingrown but I also use something called Tend Skin just in case to help prevent ingrowns and bumps. I’m in my 40’s and I wish I knew about this when I was a teenager. The other solution is laser hair removal. It’s pricey but when you add up the cost of everything else over the years it’s worth saving for! My sister had it done and it helped her so much! My husband is happy with me trimmed, plus a little bit of hair releases pheromones which is a scent we can’t detect but enhances sex a lot! It’s part of our biological make up and animals have it as well to promote procreation. So having a little is a good thing but it’s up to you. But I know your pain, embarrassment and frustration! So there are other options besides just not shaving/waxing. The cleancut you apply either oil or baby powder to help it glide, keep the area dry and that’s important for no irritation. You can get it on Amazon. With Laser they’re always coming out with new more effective ones, do your research and read reviews. Newer machines usually mean fewer treatments. Also don’t go to places that say IPL can remove hair because it can’t but many places try to scam people. IPL is not for hair removal! I know this is really long but I know your pain and want to help as much as I could.

    Female body hair in other places than legs, armpits and pubes should be normalized/depathologized. With this I mean belly hair, nipple hair, butt hair, upper lip hair, chin hair etc. Lots LOTS of cis women have this and are scared to talk about this. It can often be just genetic (of course it can be part of PCOS or other conditions, but it doesn't have to be).
    The amount of times I've wasted crying over this is just...

I did a bit of research and public hair actually helps produce oils and sweat that keep it cool down there, and also traps bacteria that could have gotten down further. As long as you wash regularly it really does not affect your vaginal health negatively, it actually has a positive influence. If anyone needs the sources I'll link them. :)

    • @FirstnameLastname-es1ko
      @FirstnameLastname-es1ko 5 лет назад +24

      Ah Lee Nah well yes and no. It’s easier to keep something hairless clean than something with hair which allows sweat and grease to cling to it. I notice myself it’s much easier to keep my underarms from smelling when I shave, as there’s no hair for the sweat to cling to and go bad. If you don’t shave it’s important to wash the areas with larger amounts of hair well, as it’s like with the hair on your head. The hair on your head allows your scalp to get greasy easily, much more than someone bald would have to worry about as it’s much easier to thoroughly clean a smooth surface than one with plenty of individual strands for grease and dirt to hide around. That’s why we use shampoo to wash off grease, just water isn’t usually enough to wash off what builds up in our hair. I’m obviously not saying we should all go bald, but it is semi true that it can be unhygienic.

    • @ahleenah
      @ahleenah 5 лет назад +65

      Bel Sheahan
      So, at the end the difference is the amount of time you have to spend cleaning it, which in retrospect makes the argument “body hair is unhygienic” invalid because everyone has to clean themselves to stay hygienic. I think the prejudice “body hair = unhygienic” developed through the believe that people not shaving are too lazy to do so (because there’s that expectation that everyone should and would), which, in conclusion, would make them too lazy to take proper care of their hygiene.

    • @FirstnameLastname-es1ko
      @FirstnameLastname-es1ko 5 лет назад +12

      Ah Lee Nah in summery, yes. It is most certainly true that body hair is not in its self unhygienic, but rather just takes more work to clean, which is not the same as dirty. I honestly don’t mind body hair at all, as long as it’s clean, which is probably obvious from the absolute forests on my arms and legs haha.

    • @FirstnameLastname-es1ko
      @FirstnameLastname-es1ko 5 лет назад +7

      dil oreo my argument is not invalid. Body hair catches sweat, unpleasant odours and bodily secretions, thus being less hygienic in a sense. Note here I am talking about armpit and pubic hair, not your regular arm and leg hair. While washing thoroughly daily can cancel out this process, it is not completely incorrect to say it less hygienic, just incorrectly phrased. A more suitable statement would be ‘patches of thick bodily hair trap sweat and other unsanitary substances, and therefore require more work to keep clean and fresh, and, when these requirements are not duly met, can be unhygienic’ or ‘large patches of thick bodily hair can trap sweat and secretions’ just because it takes more time, it does not mean all related facts regarding the subject are invalid. Not by a long shot.

Like in nature, straight people (which is the majority of the world) are usually more attracted to whoever looks the most feminine and most masculine. Men usually like women to be “soft and smooth” and women usually like men to be “rough and tough”. So although women shaving is a society-based idea, it kind of makes sense in today’s culture.

    i read this somewhere and it changed my worldview: for men, not conforming to gender roles is going out of your way to do something (shave, apply makeup, etc.) but for women, not conforming to gender roles is just existing as you are (hair growing as it does, not applying makeup, etc.).
    also it breaks my heart how often i hear women shaming other women for their body hair. i don't shave my legs regularly anymore (nothing deep, i just don't like taking the time to) and my mom comments about it when i see her, and makes it clear that it bothers her. it's so frustrating. i think of her as being a strong female role model in my life, supporting my goals, encouraging me to pursue my talents and interests, but she thinks that it's vital that i remove my body hair, as if that has any impact on who i am as a person or what i am capable of. when i was younger i used to have the same reaction to body hair on women, i thought it was unclean or unattractive. now i can see that had i not been implicitly told all my life that it was unclean or unattractive, i would have no intrinsic reason to think it was.
    i've never seriously dated anyone, and don't plan on doing so anytime soon, but i also feel that when i get out in the dating world, it will be crucial that i carefully remove all body hair very consistently as to avoid any stubble or missed spots. the idea of doing that sounds tiring and pointless, but also unavoidable.
    i guess i kind of feel like the odd one out because all of my friends who i've talked about it clearly have done zero critical thinking about the topic (frequently repeat that they like the way it looks or they like the way it feels, but can't say why, and have made it clear that they don't like the task of removing the hair, yet they readily do it and would not consider stopping). i don't know of anyone else in my life who would actually seriously consider, much less go through with, not shaving for any extended amount of time if they knew that part of their body would be visible to other people. some of my friends will admit with shame that during the winter months when they only wear long pants they will go a few weeks without shaving. it's so frustrating that no one in my life seems to notice or care that we feel intense shame about our body in its natural state. how can we ever truly love ourselves if we only love ourselves conditionally?

      I'm in a course about gendered psychopathologies at the moment, and what I've recently learned is that women experience objectification in our culture, which in turn makes us self-objectify and always monitor how we look to others. This is a very unconscious process and we think we want to look pretty for ourselves but it's actually our internalizing of objectification and we want to look good for others. I'm still learning about this theory so I'm not sure if I'm completely correct but I think body hair removal is also a part of this (of course not every woman self-objectifies but it has been proven to set males apart from females because men don't self-objectify as much as women).

    • @suzan6254

      I think being hairless is seen as desirable for women for the same reasons that other typical child-like features are, such as big eyes, small nose, relatively large head and small body, etc. Its because those features are typical for children thus make women look young and cute, like children. Which is kinda creepy when you think about it. Women start growing hair when they reach sexual maturity. Therefore from a biological point of view it would make more sense for body hair to be a turn on in the same way that boobs are, simply because they signal sexual maturity.

    I remember when I stopped shaving for the first time, one reason was that I realized I had no idea what my body hair actually looked like, because I hadn’t seen it since 13 or so. When it grew out, I was surprised by how non-shocking it was. It really wasn’t anything like male body hair which I think is the root fear for us as young women....we want to maximize sexual dysmorphia in order to maximize attractiveness, that together with the Neotony preference in our society’s men in the last century and it makes a lot of sense that we were so scared of hair. I lived abroad for some years when I had just turned 20 and where I lived women did not shave at all. It became my norm, and then I moved to Hawaii where similarly the combination of local culture and the endless stream of hippies visiting for protracted vacations normalized my non-shaving even further. Then I had daughters and when my eldest was about one I was still shaving my armpits but I started thinking about the example I was setting for her as to what was expected of her and my subconscious reinforcement of these unnatural social norms by participating in hair removal. I didn’t want her growing up thinking there was anything wrong with her body hair. So I stopped completely, I haven’t shaven a single bit of my body since then. Yesterday, my daughter expressed excitement about having hair on her legs like mine and how it will be a mark of her being grown up. I was beaming to know that I had instilled her with confidence about her body hair, rather than shame.

I don’t shave and my leg hair is darker, thicker, and more copious than some of my male friends. But that’s because I’m on the “hairer” side for women, and they have relatively little hair for a man.

      @@paulinemoira8442 I find it interesting that you assume people choosing not to remove something they don't need to remove could be a sign of laziness... Washing oneself and brushing teeth are hygienic activities that are very beneficial for the body to avoid certain diseases and overgrowth of harmful bacteria, while shaving doesn't achieve those things at all. In fact, most body hair, specifically pubic hair, often can aid in preventing disease/infection in the body.
      It's telling that you made that comment instead of saying something like
      "seeing hair removal makes me worry that people are potentially wasting their time and that means they may waste their time in other areas of life too". The statements are almost exactly similar in justification, but the reasoning behind your choice is clear: we have been conditioned to see shaving as a necessary part of hygiene upkeep because that is what keeps these industries making money. Scientifically there is no necessary reason to remove body hair. It's advertising sunk into societal shaming, and it can be damaging to peoples' self-esteems about their bodies in a natural state.

      Aside from armpits' hair(that intensifies the sweat odor, because the hair absorbs it) all the rest of body hair does only good, by protecting the skin from friction, clothes etc... especially pubic hair.

That has luckily become “non-best practices” in the last decade (though there are still paternalistic old school OBs that do it) but women often still feel shame about what their pubic hair will look like to passing medical interns as they are bringing new life into the world. Seriously, on mothering forums there is endless chatter about how to shave in preparation for birth, tips for overcoming physical limitations (it’s actually really difficult to shave your pubic hair with a beach ball belly blocking the view) whether their husband should shave them, how offended the doctor will be if they haven’t shaven etc etc. it’s a cause of considerable worry and thought at a time when a soon to be new mom should be free to relax and focus on her impending life changes. There are a lot of college youtubers these days that come from very privileged backgrounds and therefore don't have to pay for their schooling, rent, etc. They equate the luxury of their disposable youtube income and financial support with hard work and earned success. They also preach these so-called girl boss things like going to an expensive coffee shop to do work everyday, having separate gym memberships when their school gym is already free, and crossing "get nails done!" off the to-do lists in their $75 planners. I think this is extremely problematic mostly because they're influencing their younger viewers in the way that they would think that being a girl boss means buying starbucks everyday.

Not because I don't think people should have autonomy over their body hair, but because it seems like the only reason it feels sexy is because we've been culturally brainwashed into thinking hairless = sexy. People say it's just their personal preference, but the influence of culture is so ingrained. I just wish grown out hair v. shaved could be seen as completely equal.

Like I only have one other friend who keeps it bare simply because she likes the actual feeling. Everyone else always says it makes them feel sexy or do it for men.

    • @CampMelp

      I tend to agree, but then I’m also trying to think of other “cultural brainwashing” that we are all under... like it’s “gross” to belch loudly in public... that it’s unacceptable to hit on your sister’s boyfriend... that it’s not okay to stand up and shout in the middle of a crowded theater.
      We have some agreed upon foundations of social acceptability, many of which don’t involve doing any harm to anyone or are somewhat arbitrary rules around how we behave. I think that some things really are that deeply ingrained that they’re pretty much unquestionable, and for every person those threshold might be slightly different. I think for some people, seeing (or having) body hair on women is equivalent to farting loudly in public or wearing skimpy lingerie to a formal occasion... kind of unquestionably not-okay, no matter how nonsensical or arbitrary it might be. Do social norms HAVE to dictate our behavior? Of course not. But in MOST situations, adhering to the social norms is the easier route, and diverging from them requires a certain amount of courage to face down some pretty deeply, deeply ingrained negativity.

    One of my sociology profs brought up how our society puts ‘man’ in front of certain words to soften the reaction to ‘unmasculine’ things. Hegemonic masculinity is so engrained into our way of life that men don’t feel comfortable displaying any sort of feminine quality (bc our society doesn’t allow them to), so saying man bun or even male nurse creates a situation that cushions fragile masculinity and allows them to practice an unmasculine task without as much push back. Putting ‘man’ in front of something is also a good indication that the thing goes against our hegemonic masculinity definition (bc we feel the need to mark it as masculine)

      The reason "man" is used so often is because it is a word that can stand in place of human. For example, the word "mankind" is a word used to differentiate between animals and humans. Most (80% to 90%) nurses are female, so saying "male nurse" specifies that it a nurse who is a man because people assume automatically that it will be a woman. Same goes for man bun. Men wearing buns isn't a common thing because mostly women wear buns. Men's hair is often not grown out long enough to get that hairstyle, so it is an oddity that made people specify that the bun is on a man. Most people don't take the word "man-bun" seriously anyway.

    I remember once in high school my science teacher was talking about how the combination of shaving your armpits and using regular deodorant (with aluminium, which there were basically no alternatives to at the time, at least not that worked) could increase the risk of some types of cancer, and several of the girls in my class went on about how that was just a risk that they'd have to take bc the idea of not shaving was completely horrifying to them. We live in a society where young women would rather risk getting cancer than have body hair bc it is considered "unattractive"... something is deeply fucked up here.

      There is no actual scientific evidence linking cancer to aluminium or deodorant. It's pretty sad that your science teacher was spreading misinformation instead of teaching you how to understand science.

    What I don't like is equating hairlessness with hygiene. Having hair doesn't make you unclean! Anyway personally speaking, obviously within tidy reason, I feel leagues more sexually empowered and confident when I keep hair down there. Luckily, I've never had a partner that has been passionate about lady hairlessness.

      Hair is there for a reason to protect you from bacteria and infections... why do people not understand that?

      I think part of that idea that hair is unhygienic comes from the fact that lice can live in hair so in ancient times certain cultures would shave to prevent getting any form of lice. Having hair can also promote more bacteria to breed and cause odor more easily so in times when people didn't bathe regularly it could cause problems.

    I think my main issue with the whole shaving debate is the idea that any choice women make is a feminist one. I am a feminist and I shave my legs. But does that make the actual *act* of shaving your legs a feminist action? No! It's not refuting patriarchal standards, it's adhering to them. That's not to say I'm a bad or weak person for shaving my legs, but it shouldn't be labelled as "brave" to do so. Just like not everything that an environmentalist does is instantly considered eco-friendly, not everything a feminist does is a feminist action.
