    With last video’s discussion of Facetune, this week I wanted to explore how Snapchat and Instagram filters affect our self-perception and self-esteem. Some people love their edited photos so much they get plastic surgery or cosmetic procedures - this trend has been called Snapchat Dysmorphia. I also discuss Chinese social media trends, such as editing their photos with Meitu.

    black girl here. tiffany thank youuuu for bringing up the skin lightening filters and not tiptoeing around the issue. you didn't mince words at all and i appreciate that. believe me, lots of black girls (and dark-skinned folks in general) noticed and talked about how those filters were lightening our skin and slimming our noses. WE DEF NOTICED. when the filters first came on snapchat i'd use them quite a bit but after a while it felt *so* unsettling to think about how i was internalizing that eerie, unreal version of myself. a couple months later i deleted my snapchat.

    I think one of the main differences between facetune and snapchat filters is that when you go into facetune you aren’t immediately told what to “fix”, you have to figure that out yourself. But with snapchat, there are these universal filters that changes everything about your face, and you might end up becoming unhappy with something you didn’t even know was a problem before you put that filter on.
    TLDR; facetune fixes something you were already unhappy about, while snapchat creates things to be unhappy about

    • @nicolesmith4371
      @nicolesmith4371 5 лет назад +67

      loonafanclub idk I feel like most people start using facetune to fix what they would consider small flaws at first but it almost always leads to them using more and more and starting to fix things that may not have even bothered them before they had the tools. Ask anyone that uses facetune regularly how much they use it now compared to when they first started. Then ask them how long it took them to go from fixing that one lil flaw that’s always bothered them to adjusting their whole face. Basically what I’m saying is filters and facetune are both just as damaging as the other...one is just instant, and the other happens in steps 🤷‍♀️ so those that rely on facetune are in just as much danger as those that rely on filters.

    • @sooyoungfanclub
      @sooyoungfanclub 5 лет назад +28

      +Nicole Smith yeah of course!! but like you said facetune takes more time, and snapchat is instantly telling you “here are all your possible flaws”. Both are of course harmful in different ways though

    I work as a portrait artist at a theme park (semi-realistic portrait sketches, not caricatures) and I cannot tell you how many girls I have come up who insist we draw their snapchat filter selfies. We usually tell them that we would really rather they just sit and model for us for their drawing, because we're trained to draw off of live models, not photos, and they always make a massive fuss over it. "My hair is messy", "I'm not wearing make-up", "I look bad", etc. A lot people will straight up leave if we won't draw their flower crown filter selfie.
    And then if we do end up drawing their snapchat selfies, it end up looking nothing like them a lot of the time. It's an already stylized photo and that's getting filtered through the eye of artist, so the likeness to the actual original subject is getting further distilled. we sometimes will end up getting rejected sketches because of it.

      @@tiffanyferg It's SO confounding to me. the whole intersection of art and self-image is really weird in the era of instagram and snapchat tbh. one of my (former) coworkers used to draw really smooth-skinned, borderline uncanny valley portraits that all had really really similar features. he was super resistant to constructive criticism and it didn't make sense to me until I looked at his instagram and realized the way he facetuned his photos looked remarkably similar to his portraits. thinking about that makes me wonder about all those instagram artists(ie. spirkitty, bluesssatan) whose feeds are just entirely portraits of instagrammers that are somehow even more idealized than the photos they referenced off 😬

    Around the time I was pursuing my doctorate in neuropsychology, I realized I needed to get away from social media. I began viewing myself in a different light, feeling inadequate and seeing the people around me becoming addicted to image.
    This led me to studying the effect of filters and photo editing on perceived happiness, which I tracked via functional MRI. The areas of the brain that would light up when toggling between a filtered or altered picture (done by the patient in the studies themselves) and an unfiltered, raw, or slightly unflattering picture of themself showed that areas of the brain related to trauma would light up. It was interesting to see how filtered versions of yourself could spark a light within us, which could be immediately extinguished upon viewing our real natural selves.
    On a more personal note, I remember last summer when I was in Indonesia on a beach. I overheard a girl next to me explaining to her friend that the “view is beautiful, sure, but it’s not like the pictures she’s seen of it on Instagram... it looks less alive in person.”
    I know I’m ranting here but I think we’re creating a really dangerous environment that is expecting too much from everything around us. We expect to look flawless, to have chiseled cheek bones, full lips, and a thin nose. We’re expected to see striking blue water, unnaturally green trees, and picturesque views around every corner. It’s creating an air of disappointment and unhappiness because reality physically cannot live up to our expectations.

      I 100% agree with you I was part of a large research group working for the UC system here in California! Let me find the finished product, I will link it.

    • @melodyschnapp6455
      @melodyschnapp6455 5 лет назад +48

      Marshaa Brady I phrased it in fairly simple terms for the sake of the comment, but ultimately it’s not the altered version that peaks trauma within the brain. It’s the flashing comparison between an unflattering portrait and a personally altered or photoshopped image. One example from the study was a young woman who had an insecurity regarding her nose. The unflattering picture, in her mind, highlighted the root of her insecurity, while the photo she altered presented an image of herself she much preferred. When toggling between the two, her mind fixated on the shocking difference between the two versions of her nose, one real and one not. Upon viewing this, functional MRI showed her ACC and Amygdala (both respectively responsible for emotional regulation and fear) were highly active. To link this brain activity as closely to trauma as possible, we (with the patients utmost consent, of course) flashed images relating to trauma buried within their life, some of which was jarring and quite excruciating. Those images provided us with nearly the exact same brain reaction as when shown those pictures of her nose.
      Of course research digs far deeper than this, and this is still a fairly surface level response, but I hope it brings some clarification to my original post and I’d love to answer anything else you’d like to know about it!!

    One thing I've noticed recently: Snapchat filters on babies. Seriously lots of people I know only upload pics of themselves and their babies with matching filters. What I find interesting is that they're often seen as a teen or millennial thing ("kids these days") but I notice a LOT of older women (40s and 50s) who only use Snapchat filtered profile photos. That age group seems to abuse the smoothing filters the most too. Whereas the younger girls may spend 45 minutes lightly tweaking their faces the older women just set the smoothing filter to max and call it a day. It's especially awkward when they do it to a group photo and everyone has freakishly smoothed skin and overly whitened eyes. As I type this I remember Donald Trump Jr's girlfriend posted a photo of them recently where she had done this and it filtered him too!

    I think snapchat was influenced by those Japanese Purikura photobooths that started in the 90s. They use very strong filters and wash out every feature but the eyes. The mental effects are not as bad as snapchat because the photos are so tiny you can't really compare it to your real face. In a way though, people in parts of Asia have been using filters since the 90s.

    i think people are too obsessed with being beautiful. like if you're not "beautiful" you have to be constantly trying to become as beautiful as you can and if you're not trying to do that there's something wrong with you. for example it's the same thing with clothing, when i was younger and shopping with my mom i was supposed to pick clothes that make me look more attractive and presentable, and when i was picking clothes i actually like my mom would tell me that it doesn't flatter me. or when a girl doesn't wear make up to fix her "flaws" everyone seems surprised and irritated because she is supposed to be fixing her flaws. you literally don't have to be beautiful. you look the way you look, you don't have to be trying to change your appearance. my point is that everyone expects you to be trying to reach the image of beauty and it's stupid and unnecessary

    I REALLY dont like when make up companies use a beauty guru facetooned to the heaven to promote themselves. It looks fake af and makes me not want the product. Interestingly, CVS just launched a campaign to not use edited photos in their marketing materials (and I think in-store too), focusing mainly on beauty product ads. Whether it will be a marketing gimmick or start a trend remains to be seen, but I like the idea. If it becomes an industry thing will it trickle down to the beauty guru set? I know it's frustrating when a person is reviewing a foundation and talking about the effects on their skin but their beauty lights are jacked up to max and you can't see any difference. I'm a pretty media savvy person and even I started to feel like my skin must look like shit because even with foundation I still have bumps or lines, whatever, then you catch a glimpse of them in natural light and you're like ohhhh. I'm 33 I'm not following grown women reviewers because I want to know how something performs on perfect baby skin.

Often the lighter women are portrayed as feminine, submissive and weak, while darker skin is masculine, dominant and strong. It also has to do with how we look at black women, that being strong and dominant makes masculine or a man, and if you do submit you're feminine.

One thing I find interesting is that, as an Indian girl, whenever I see it hear about my peers (in real life or on social media) talking about wanting to get cosmetic surgery, it's always about enhancing a feature to make it more fitting with the "Eurocentric" standards of beauty (MOST LIKELY the nose- removing the bulges, or straightening it). It’s interesting that you said that Chinese people with editing apps are chasing after the same western ideals we do... Another great video ❤️

    • @valeriavagapova
      @valeriavagapova 5 лет назад +34

      Agree with you, I also thought the same thing while watching, beauty standards in East Asia are actually pretty different. I think even just having a look at popular celebrities in East Asian countries and comparing them to Western celebs already makes it easy to see the difference. Asian ideal is more traditionally feminie, soft, cute, "frail" so to speak, while Western is a lot more bold, sexy, mature perhaps. The features that are considered attractive are different as well, for example Asia has a big emphasis on having "small face", so prominent cheekbones are considered to be undesireable and jaw shaving surgeries are a thing; while in the West prominent, sharp jawline and cheekbones are actually considered to be attractive and no one cares about the size of your face, unless it's extreme.
      I also think that the Snapchat-like filters mostly came from East Asia, with the rise of Chinese technology market. I would guess that Western companies just picked up the existing Chinese technology, tweaked it here and there and made it popular in the West with apps like Snapchat. But idk, that's just my guess to be fair.

    • @sunniyun5887
      @sunniyun5887 5 лет назад +28

      Valeria Vagapova totally, I completely agree. I also want to point out that a lot of East Asians want a lighter skin tone not to be seen are more ‘European’ or white, but rather that ideal has been ingrained in their history explicitly for hundreds of thousands of years. That, along with a plethora of other East Asian beauty standard are definitely not predominantly rooted in wanting to look European/western.

      Sunni Yun To add on to the skin tone thing, I think it’s because the farmers who spent all day in the sun got pretty tanned, while the aristocrats stayed pale, associating paleness with money and desirability. Also, my cousins in China don’t really aspire to be a western type of white,but like paper white. I think some people there referred to the skin tone of caucasians as more red or pink than white too.

      sergio garcia c. LOL. Did you just feel the need to try and be mean to a stranger? I think this is the first time I’ve ever gotten a hate comment on YT and I didn’t even say anything mean. Does this make you feel better about your life? Saying hateful things to people you don’t know online? I’m genuinely curious what you get from this. You clearly just troll for people to say rude things to while not actually adding anything constructive to the conversation. Man, what a time to be alive.

    Except for the novelty when they very first came out I’ve never liked the look of filters - it’s cute to send in between friends but I don’t understand why people post it to their social media much less use it as profile pictures or on dating sites. Like you obviously do not look like that

      It's so bad on dating sites, I want to see what you actually look like not 3 pictures of you as a dog and one with a horrifyingly babyish face with huge creepy eyes! Unless you're a terrifying baby-person irl, you don't have to put it on your dating profile.

    Yes to ALL OF THIS! I feel like such an anomaly to be 26 and DESPISE filters! I used to use them up until 2 years ago when I realized we just look dumb lol. Filters can be fun of course, but when people are heavily relying on them for EVERY photo it's a cry for help. I can't tell you how many times i've swiped through Tinder and saw nothing but people my age with filters on every photo! That's an automatic turn off for me. Not only does it reek of insecurity but it's incredibly juvenile. I even saw on the news the search for a missing young woman and the photo they showed us was her with the flower crown filter! Her parents didn't have a recent photo of her without one? Where do we draw the line? I don't want a giant photo at my funeral of me with the dog filter--somethings gotta give.

    It's so true. I've always had masculine features that aren't considered beautiful in the mainstream. With these filters that make my face look more feminine and "cute" I can look more like what most consider attractive. When the filters come off I feel less than happy about my appearance compared to how I did two seconds prior.

    Tiffany, you’re officially one of my top favorite RUclipsrs. When I’m able to support you on Patreon I definitely will.
    I personally used to think that I looked awful and hated a lot of my features. It wasn’t until I was 25 that I started to appreciate my looks and my body (I’m 27 now so it’s only been 2 years). I still suffer with a lot of insecurities, though. Even now I’m at the gym preparing to do some intense cardio to get rid of my small pouch of a tummy. I know it isn’t bad, but I can’t help but be disgusted with myself when I see it. I don’t fat shame anyone but myself, which says a lot. Idk I’m rambling now, but keep it up.

I hate that my youngest siblings are on the internet seeing people facetuning, with filters, or photoshopping bc they're going to believe that that's how they're supposed to look. It's unrealistic and toxic.

    I think it was super interesting how you said how people get used to seeing themselves with a filter on, and so they don't like their normal faces anymore... because it's exactly the same with makeup. I realized how much I am dependent on makeup to make myself feel presentable or pretty, and it's an insane crutch! I've recently been trying to scale down how much I use and actually not put on any at all on weekdays when I don't have professional appointments. It's. CRAZY. how crappy I feel sometimes when I look at my un-made-up face in the mirror and just want to grab some concealer for under my eyes (new mom!) or mascara for my pale lashes or blush for my blue-white skin... I so wish I could just look at my un-made-up self and be like, dang girl! But I'm definitely not there yet. And when you're walking around in everyday life comparing your COMPLETELY. NORMAL. HUMAN. FACE. to other girls who are made up, it doesn't help. Definitely a parallel problem to face filters!

    I had the same affect with wearing makeup, especially natural (invisible) makeup. I can contour my nose, cheeks, and even lips. Add certain eye shadow, create a natural cat eye.....
    And then, you start to prefer your madeup version than the real self. I caught myself getting so dissappointed everyday after washing my face before bed. My brain would be literally thinking: "why do I have to go to bed ugly?" I would feel ugly every night and every moment without makeup. So, I stopped relying on makeup. I slowly started using less and less of it UNTIL I learned to love myself without makeup ....but it was sooo excruciatingly hard to do. That habit is dangerous in how it distracts us from reality while keeping our minds chasing after illusion.

    This was SUCH a good video omggg but I thought it would be cool if you mentioned the change in the ever-popular dog filter on snap bc they changed its design. Before it used to be just the ears and the nose but since then they’ve added more beauty-centric changes like blush, a hanger in eye size (basically everything their other beauty filters have) and it made me a lil sad bc I loved the way it was before and now it’s just another beauty filter. I really can’t wait to see what other vids you have coming and it’s been amazing to see how far your channel has come!💛💛

    I was diagnosed with BDD and anorexia a few weeks ago and it’s made me realise so much about how I see myself. Things like snapchat and Instagram (even though there are some amazing things that these platforms give us) DESTROY me sometimes. There is a disconnect between me and the girl on my phone, and even though I see some friends’ beautiful images on Instagram and think ‘that’s not even what you look like in real life’ but it still upsets my self esteem.

    I knew I had to stop using filters/facetune when it ended being just funny to actually not being able to recognise myself without them.
    One example of this destroyed perception that blew my mind was when I used facetune to change absolutely everything about my best friend's face as a joke (large eyes and lips, small face and nose, every single feature) then, I saved the edited photo and used to go through the same procedure again (so it made everything absurdly distorted). So I had the original picture, the first edited one, and the second, distorted one. And the crazy thing is that when I finished editing the second photo, I looked at the first edited photo I was like... Actually this looks just like my friend, it didn't change that much (?). And after that, I looked at the original and I was so shocked because I couldn't "recognise" my friend. I felt as if the edited one was the real one. I think that my friend is absolutely gorgeous and this made me see her real face as something... ugly. I deleted the app.

    When I was growing up the hot topic of unhealthy beauty standards was focused on the magazines and how models not only starved themselves but also were photoshopped. And so the reaction was to educate ppl on how the photos been changed in the hope of combating the desire to look like them. Now it’s not only celebrities that are changed it’s ourselves and we know it’s changed but it doesn’t help where do we go from here? We think we all should look a certain way but it’s not possible.

    Regarding the Asian Culture in China (I think I'm too lazy to look it up) most of the streamers use beauty filters which is normal but then while this one lady was live her beauty filter malfunctioned and revealed that she was a middle aged woman and had been lying about her age to get people to donate to her. And now I think some people are starting to change their opinions about beauty filters but I'm not sure.

    I'm binging all your videos at the moment, they're so good ! Also, your comment on how Chinese and Asian culture has affected those filters is really on point. I've been an exchange student, and I'm still in China right now, and everything is true, you wouldn't post an unedited picture, most of the pictures they're posting are heavily posed, and you have videos everywhere teaching you angles, and how to edit your photos, that was quite shocking when I first arrived, and they were shocked at how random I was when posting any photo. Many of my friends don't even look like themselves when they post a photo, but that's how it is here.

It’s sad cause people think no one wants them for their unfiltered self.
