"If you're not hitting out of the middle, no club is going to help you." - probably the most important part of this review for me and it really had nothing to do with the club. When I was starting out I was looking for the club that would save me from being rubbish. Knowing it doesn't exist anywhere seems obvious once you're a bit further along on the journey, but it is so valuable to understand that simple point.
I have the 921 Forged irons. I love em. There’s a clear difference in sound and feel with the 4-7 Chromoly infused irons compared to the 1025E short irons, but I don’t mind it. The long irons feel a bit snappier, springier. One thing about the 921 Forged that I noticed was that they bend out of specs rather easily. I brought my irons to a golf shop to have the lofts and lies checked and most of the irons were 1-1.5 degrees off and the lie angles weren’t even close to specs. No big deal. But within about 6 months, I brought them back to get checked out and sure enough, the irons were out of spec again. I’m not sure if this is a common occurrence or not with forged irons as these are the first forged set I’ve ever played on a regular basis.
Can’t wait to get my just fitted 923 forged from Mizuno. HCP 9-10, I tried out Callaway, Srixon, Taylormade, Wilson and TITLEIST 200. I really wanted to fit to the TITLEIST, but it turned out, that the soft feel of the Mizuno couldn’t be beaten. Length, consistency and feel was way better than with all others. I love a slim top-line, so the tour would suit me a bit better at this issue, but out at the course, I think, the forged will serve me better.
@@samwills4685 I play them now for about 4 weeks .... best Irons I ever had, and I started Golf in 1999 ..... It was an immediate fit at the Golf course, I play about 1 club longer than before, but that might be because of the loft difference. But when I get to the ball there is no doubt. I am absolute confident to hit it hard and straight - no worries!
Oh… yes… please!!! The tour is beautiful… The top line on the forged looks like the same as the MP18 top line. JPX Tour looks closer to my MP33 on the top line from your camera view. ALWAYS love your Mizuno reviews Mark.
Just love me a Mizuno iron. Still rocking the MMC, but in a few years I’ll upgrade to a newer Mizuno. So buttery, bag appeal, consistent. Just so good.
You can't go wrong with Mizuno. I am playing some of my best golf ever with my MP225s and I find them pretty forgiving across the face and beautiful to look at.
@@BuffaloBarber24 The tours are probably the least forgiving but have a very slim top line and the smallest head. The 225 and the forged are pretty similar but I think the 225 will feel a bit better and be a tiny bit less forgiving. The 225 is a hollow body construction but the JPX forged is designed with a hot face. I am pretty sure the 225 and the forged have the same lofts, making then a bit longer than the tour which has more conventional loft and needs more clubhead speed to get the same distance. You need to go and try them somewhere before deciding.
I recently went out to get fitted for Mizuno irons. A golf specialist near me had some nice discounts, so I figured this was my chance. Got there, blind tested all major brands and their types, really wanted Mizuno to 'fit' me but to my surprise I ended up with a set of PXG 0311 Gen 4's. I just didn't get the feeling I wanted/hoped for with Mizuno and found it in the PXG's. It felt like that scene from Harry Potter where his wand picks him. Got the clubs completely fitted and absolutely love them since. What I'm trying to say is that "feel" is subjective and everyone should definitely get fitted if you have the chance. You might be pleasantly surprised!
Agree 100%. I went into a fitting today with three other irons in mind and after hitting 10 different heads went with the JPX 923 Forged which wasn’t even on my radar (and how I made my way to this video!)
I'm with you Mark. The Tour is almost as forgiving with a very large sweet spot and far more playable. I've been gaming the 919 Tours and found the new 923 Forged to be far less playable. So much so that I just picked up the 923 Tours and am selling my Forged. BTW, I kept my 919 Tour 4 iron in the bag as the 923 Forged 4 is clunky and not a lot of fun off the Turf. The Tours are the best iron that Mizuno has ever made. Period.
I've had the Forged since November. For me I found a larger distance difference (about 15 yards on the 7 iron), a tad more forgiving, and a higher flight, than the tour. Bought them after 5 years of MP 18's. My swing speed is lower than yours Mark- I am an old git 😁
I demoed both. I’m a 2. Tour higher. Forged lower. Tour deadly accurate. Custom tours on way. 5-AW. No 4. I’ve got a Ping hydrid 🎉. Did order a 54 in S23 mid bounce satin. Was a Titelist iron player. Good yes. These id say are better. Mizuno irons are special
Good, You told about the mat being flimsy, and that impact would’ve been fat on the course. When practising off mats, the hard ones are really forgiving hitting consistent duffs.and many people doesn’t recognize, if the impact was quarter inch fat on a mat, but struggle on the course, of course. The tell-tails are the sound and ground reaction on the ball landing. Also the trajectory can tell if it was a smidgen thick or not, but it can either be high or too low depending on how much before the ball you hit the mat and wether or not you added loft.
I play the 921 Tours and don’t buy into the ‘better players’ stuff. I’m a 9hcp golfer and they are just lovely looking and feeling golf clubs. I rarely if ever think a chunkier club would have helped. I like the loft on them as I want a 7 iron to be a 7 and not a 6 or even a 5.5 ! I play 5 to PW and above that, let the hybrids do the work for long shots. (I’ve not played a 4 iron for years) More people should give them a try as you might be pleasantly surprised.
I had a buddy of mine start out playing golf with AP2s and when we went to a chunkier iron he couldn’t hit them. I don’t feel chunkier irons help as much as they say they do.
I'm still playing the irons I started with..(.MP30s 3-pw)and I love them. I would like more modern irons and a bit more distance but I can't afford the ridiculous prices golf clubs are nowadays..
Hi Mark, interesting review. Really surprised at the yardage amounts considering 4 degrees of loft difference. Usually loft rules?? I’d be interested in an all Mizuno comparison with the MP225, HM Pro and the 923 Forged. Thanks and keep them coming!
That's very interesting Mark, particularly as I play Mizuno JPX 900 Forged, which I like, but I struggle to hit both 5 & 6-iron (so have replaced them with similarly lofted hybrids). Thank you for explaining why this might be so!!!
Exactly. I don’t understand the appeal for the recreational golfer to play the tour irons. You have to be a phenomenal ball striker to get the best out of those irons.
I am a big Mizuno fan however the Endo forged Irons for me feel better which is subjective. The ZX7 MK II VS JPX Tour and ZX5 MKII VS JPX Forged..... I play a Japanese Domestic Market set from OnOff ... 2015 Kuro Irons. Single piece forged from Endo
Interesting that 919 forged 7 iron is 32deg and this one is 30 but I guess this is the direction of travel for clubs. I am gaming the 919s and love them, the gapping is so precise; 12 yards between each club, I did not have that level of consistency with my old AP2s
MP 18s in the bag... only because I got a good price on a used set. Used to play at +2, but don't play anywhere as much these days. If I where to play again, I would absolutely dump the blades and jump at these.
In the past you recommended hybrid-irons like the Clevland Launcher XL Halo so insistently I finally got a set of Sub 70 799 last week, and I think it was a good decision. So not about to second guess myself no matter how much you like there Mizuno irons.
Thanks for the review Mark. You've talked in the past about driver weight feeling like it might help your speed. Do you think iron weight is important and does it vary much between sets? I'm quite slim so the idea of lighter irons appeals to me. Thanks 👍
High handicapper here, the best round I've ever scored was with a set of MP5 blades... Call me crazy, but I agree that there is some truth in the idea that more people can game these irons than what people generally assume
Why do they not make a 3 iron in the tour? I love my 921 tours…which I had a 3 iron. I butter my 4…have to get a 3 iron from ap2 or hmb..hit the ap2 a bit better…but I really wish they’d go down to 3 irons on these!
