  • On September 10, 1861, Union and Confederate forces clashed high above the Gauley River in Virginia (today West Virginia). The Battle of Carnifex Ferry featured no less than 20 current and future Civil War generals, and the strategic Union victory helped to secure the push for West Virginia statehood. Join Kris White for this deep-dive into the battle.

My name is Cody Carnefix and my Great, great, great, great, great Grandfather owned and operated Carnefix Ferry. He also had a store on the Meadow River side. He gave the land that the battle was fought on to his daughter and her husband, Henry Patterson. Love learning about West Virginia battles, thanks for the video!

My great, great, great, great grandfather Christian Scherer was a German immigrant who fought in I Company of the 9th Ohio Infantry Regiment (1st German Infantry Regiment) at Carnifex Ferry.

I visited this battlefield many times as a child in the early 1970s. My grandparents lived just east of Charleston-and this was the perfect driving distance for a day outing. We picnicked, played baseball, and always walked down to the river. As kids we were always fascinated with the bullets lodged in the old Patteson House.

There was woods ferry that crossed the gauley, Patterson ferry, and carnifex ferry that were in that vicinity of the Gauley River. I have lived and traversed all of these areas my entire life. I e never heard the story of what actually happened during the actual battle in that area.

Thank you for covering this battle. Visited this park in 1970 when I was 16 with my sisters and mother on our way to Radford, VA to visit relatives. I only remember the house and walking down to the river.

Thank you for this video. I've been to this battlefield many times as a "staycation." Beginning to understand its significance. My phone's background is my son and I at the cannon you showed early in the video. We were there for Father's Day a year ago. Col. John Lowe is my Great, Great Uncle. Can't remember how many greats. He was branded a coward at the battle of Scary Creek near St. Albans, WV. He didn't want that reputation, warranted or not, and showed himself as brave, but was killed at the battle. Thank you again. Have enjoyed this very much and look forward to going to some of the other WV Battlefields.

@@alanfisher7932 It's a great poem. I can't verify that it was written by Col. Lowe but it is attributed to him. Colonel Lowe poem
My day of life is over,
And here I lay me down
In the hot, red field of battle,
In the arms of high renown.
By the shaft of death I'm stricken
In my upward flight to fame,
And I give my life to nothingness
      To win a soldiers name.
