  • Hi Everyone.In this video I take a look at the Aldi (nee Scheppach) HD2P extractor and compare it to my Festool CTL SYS. Enjoy!
    Edit: there’s a follow-on video here - • Sucky Vacs Follow Up [... - where I deal with noise tests etc...
    NB: not an actual Festool v Cheap Tool as they're not directly cpmparable i.e. no auto-start/power take-off on the Aldi.

    At my baseline I only have 18% lung volume, but with my nebuliser and my other 24 different medications including controlled drugs and prescriptions at four times the maximum dose, I usually function at around 25%. My other problem is that I have "extreme" persistent atopic asthma as well and I also have a lot of upper body pain due to the same nerve damage that is closing my lungs down. My wife, who is hemiparuplegic and my inspiration and I live in a small ground floor flat.
    When I’m able I take my power tools outside our front door, and I bought a very cheap vacuum cleaner to attach to each machine in turn and the only thing it struggles with is my router. That’s my fault for buying a Silverline router table, but it’s light and serves my purpose without the extra shelves on. Even working outdoors I use the vacuum and always always wear a good quality mask. I won’t let my condition stop me doing things that matter to me like seeing my family, my bird watching, photography and making frames for my images, but I have to take extra precautions and I would ask others to do the same.
    Because of the way my lungs are failing, from the bottom up rather than the entire organ getting weaker, any dust will not be expelled in the usual way but will sit on the bottom of my lungs turning into nasty infections. I have another infection at the moment, which is my fifth serious one since May and I’m easily in double figures for the year. Or it might just be the same one that keeps returning.
    The reason I’ve gone into details isn’t to bring attention to myself, it is because of the importance of the subject, if you have a dedicated workshop a fixed extraction system is massively important. Even if like me you don’t have a permanent designated space it is still as important but you might have to be more inventive about how you manage the problem. Please, please, please, your masks are every bit as important as safety glasses or ear defenders, don’t rely on any of these machines to make the environment safe.
    Thank you for raising this massively important subject, and discussing some of the alternatives. I wouldn’t wish my condition on anyone and any thing that raises awareness I applaud, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

      Mark Harris when I first was working on jobs with dust from sweeping etc. At that time I didn't like sweeping preparing for jobs and always had sinus. We didn't have masks in those days and also smoke effected me from cigarette smoke. I had bronchitis when I was young and the injections were the probable cause. Later I wore masks and I no longer had sinus issues. Although smokers around still made my nose runny for over a day before clearing so I would avoid smokers as much as I could. Sanding timber without attached to a vacuum caused me to have a runny nose. After using dust collection using a festool I found I didn't need to wear a mask.
      So at what point do you see micro fibre particles and if the vacuum sucks this I don't know.
      When I see carpenters cutting treated timber without dust collection and no mask. They are exposing themselves to the toxins and the poisons of the treated material.
      As the the low end vacuum, I wonder how long it takes for the filter to clog and then not have the same sucking capacity.

    Very fair and balanced comparison. I'm a pro joiner and I have the CTL-SYS - principally because my van is entirely racked out for Systainers and it therefore makes total sense for me, especially for small cutting, routing and trimming jobs where dragging in the larger extractor is cumbersome and unnecessary. Plus - every machine I own has a standardised hose connector. The price is indeed eye-watering, but it's a beautifully designed and built piece of kit - and to me (like all of my equipment) it's just a tax offset. I've tried out low-cost equipment before but I've found (in 100% of cases) that none of it is up to the demands of day in/day out heavy usage on a jobsite. But to a newbie, a DIY guy, or an occasional user, the Scheppach makes perfect sense. Keep up the good work.

      Thanks Kevin! As I hope comes across clearly in the vid, I've had the CTL SYS since it came out 3 years ago as my 'installs' vac and it stands up really well to the regular abuse - I've no regrets at all about buying it, or any of my other Festool stuff, as their long-term value *to me* is clear. The CTL SYS is also an L Class vac, which the Scheppach isn't - I'll have a bit more on this in the follow-on vid, but that's why I haven't put this out as past of the Festool vs Cheap Tool series, since they're not directly comparable. And yes, the point of it really was to put the Scheppach through its paces with a view to someone starting out, or who only needs occasional cleanup after installs etc... It may not be up to the Festool in terms of filtration, but it's 1000 times better than nothing at all. And of course, it would also make a good basis for a DIY cyclone project in a home workshop. Cheers, Peter 👍

    Hi Peter
    Another great video thank you. I had the scheppach version found it grew to have on the van nice and compact. But gave up on it. It was great at sucking up the dust but terrible at keeping hold of it, a lot used to blow straight through the bag and filter. So it was great for hoovering up say saw dust and general coarser debris but awful when attached to a sander producing fine dust.

      Cheers Steve. Yes, as I say in the follow-up vid, I didn’t have filtration info on the Aldi when I made the vid, but I do now - 1 micron for the Festool, 3 microns for the Aldi, so fine for sawdust, probs not so great with filler 👍👍

    Just thought I’d let you know that I’ve had one of the workzone vacs that I had attached to my mitre saw and after 1 year it gave up the ghost, Aldi said not economical to repair and they no longer stock it, so it was full refund as under 36 month warranty 😉 now on the hunt for a more robust one!

    Your cleaning comment is spot on. I install into peoples houses and we regularly get comments on the fact that we clean up afterwards. Can you believe some people walk in, drill red brick dust onto the carpets, and leave? I know this because customers tell me. Those guys are never going to get repeat business.

    Well this one is literally worth watching, just ordered one at the lower price. Most my kit goes in the back of my Golf, so this won’t take up too much additional space. I bought a Wickes wet and dry vac a few weeks ago which for the money is great but not very compact for this sort of usage and not intended for the sanding and drilling activities I need the ALDI vac for. Thanks for the heads up everyone.

    I bought the festools sustainer vacuum, when I purchased the Domino. The 2 were about $1300. I consider the sustainer vacuum as a part of the Domino, as in an accessory, a convenience. It's a great vacuum, or extractor as you say. And, when I first bought it, I did use it for clean up, and I learned very quickly, it's only purpose is to evacuate the sawdust out of tools like Sanders, multi tools, Domino's, and track saws. It is a vacume, with a very specific use. Extend the life of tools, blades and sandpaper. It's not a tool for clean up, I have a small vacuum for that, but I don't work alone most of the time, and sometimes I'll pull it out so we can clean up faster.

    I just bought the Aldi Vac off the back of this little review. I currently have a large CamVac, but its really far better as a chip extractor and is not portable. Something smaller would be much better for sanding and drilling. Thanks for doing the review, I wouldn't have even known about the Aldi vac otherwise.

    Not sure it has been mentioned but the quoted airflow rates are identical for these. Scheppach states 120 m3/h and Festool 2000l/h (equal to 120 m3/h)...so that matches your testing :)

    Great video again Peter. I was just looking on the market for a Festool Midi because they have great filtration. I think the problem with cheap vacs is filters eventually blow out dirty air into the room as they clog up with with fine dust. This is problem I have found so far. That's why I started looking at the Festool vacs but they are soooo expensive. Maybe a new filter could be made for the Aldi vac by butchering a dyson sponge filter or something.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Thanks! All the Festool entry-level vacs have the same filtration, class L; Scheppach don’t appear to state a value for the HD2P so I’d assume it doesn’t meet that standard. I don’t think it’s as simple as putting in a finer filter as the whole enclosure needs to be airtight, and a finer filter would almost certainly lead to reduced airflow, and possibly over-heating and potentially a fire-hazard. Like most vacs, I think the Scheppach relies heavily on the bag for filtration, which is why it’s disappointing that there are no disposable bags available. 👍👍

    • @perpelle
      @perpelle 5 лет назад

      There is a hepa filter available (marketed by festool) for the festools and in terms of filtration it passes the higher class.
      There are a few silly things that needs to be on a M-class vacuum for people who can't think but the filters and bags are the same.
      That filter on the aldi looks proper crap. Same with the hose. Festool hoses rocks.

    Thanks for the video, picked up an Aldi return as my first dust collection tool. Shame it doesn't fit onto other Aldi products (sanders and circular saw) without the 'inner tube' work around but first trials at sanding in my 8x6 shed are very encouraging. I couldn't do that before, all such work had to be done outside. A great improvement for me.

    A couple thoughts/comments...I am the proud owner of both the CTL-SYS and the CT36, so I may be slightly biased in favor of the Festool. The only thing lacking on the portable is adjustment of the vacuum. For cutting tools that is not a problem, but for sanding, it is best to decrease the vacuum to eliminate chatter. As far as the comparison goes, you only used the Festool sander. Not all sanders are created equal, and another brand like Porter Cable or Dewalt might not have the same pass-through of air. I'm just sayin'.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Hi Ira, and thanks for your thoughts. I’ve owned the CTL SYS since they were available here (a little over 3 years) and it’s been my on-site install vac for all that time without missing a beat. And in all that time I haven’t missed the variable speed at all - I did a couple of very early videos about that exact thing, and sourced a bleed valve to allow reduced suction - but that’s mostly because I rarely do the kind of fine-finish sanding onsite. The Festool sanders do have particularly efficient air throughout - that’s why I used my RTS400 for this test, so we could see the kind of ‘suckage’ you get at the tool, with abrasive attached. I agree, using another sander or brand would reduce the effect, but I’d expect it do so for both vacs, equally. You might also want to take a look at my follow-up video, where I discuss filtration and noise 👍👍

    Wouldn't be surprised if they had the same motor and 'fan' inside.
    Great to see the suction (vacuum) test. The other important parameter to a dust collector is air flow. Don't know how one would test that. But don't confuse them the way you did at 12:12.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Thanks! Hadn’t considered they might have the same motor - better get AVE into another tear down, lol! Trouble with testing airflow (anemometer works well) is that it’s dependent on the hose size, unless you’re measuring off the motor, but then how ‘real world’ is that? And 12.12? I was weighing the lumps of MDF that both vacs almost, but not quite picked up. Was that confusing? Or was it the Kilos 😆👍👍

    Good review overall but I think the suction test could do with a revisit (it was impressive though). The problem is all the test really showed was that the two tools could achieve the same final vacuum level. Dust extraction is about more than maximum vacuum though, if it wasn't then we'd all be using high vacuum pumps on our dust extraction setups. A good dust extractor for a tool needs to be able to achieve a good vacuum but also do it quickly, that way if your sander goes over the edge of the board you won't end up with a big cloud of dust while it re-establishes the vacuum. It's tough to test in a controlled way though, best I can think of would be to sand the edge of a piece of MDF and film it to estimate how much dust is escaping.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      As you say, tough to show in a visually interesting way, though. Also I’m trying to avoid getting too much into the whole ‘science experiment’ thing as well - the methodology needs to be rigorous if it’s to be meaningful, and my little workshop is the exact opposite of a ‘clean room’ lol! The edge sanding test may have something going for it - like I did in the orbital sanders comparison, starts video #089 - but I suspect the results would be very similar to what we saw in this video. And tbh, there’s only so much testing this little vac warrants. 👍👍

    I picked one up a while ago as it stacks well with my tool boxes replacing a much larger shop vac which was always a pain. Had a couple of minor issues the switch on the top gets pressed when you stack stuff on it and the glue came unstuck on the hose and needed glueing back up. I was never going to spend 300 quid on a Festool so am very happy with it in general.

I love feststool products but. find they are not suitable for job site work they are a bit fragile and best kept in the workshop.

    Whilst you are buying tools at Aldi here's a tip to get you brownie points with your missus. If they have it in stock. Pay a fiver for a bottle of their No1 , No3 or No4 fragrance. I guarantee she won't be able to tell the difference between that and the equivalent from Jo Malone at £80 and you might get less earache for buying tools again. They did the same a couple of years ago with a famous fragrance and within days they were sold out once word got out.

      Yep, no argument there - the Festool vac in this vid is 3 years old and still going strong (obvs) but to be fair the Aldi has a 3-year warranty- and you don’t have to register to get it 😬. Oh, and I’ve never met a client who could tell a Festool from a Workzone, lol 😂👍👍

    Random woodbutcher here, got the Workzone vac and love it. Set it on one of the £10 wheeled plant movers that Lidle do, solves the short hose problem moving around a room, doing a ply underfloor. Love the stamp on on off switch and have a stamp on extension camel which I can plug this and whatever tool i need dust collection on.
    Having said that I still have a Hoover Aquamaster bought over 20 years ago which I used to clean up lose gravel chippings from the grass yesterday, that had overspilled from the rusty sheet tin I laid to get them delivery tipped onto. Much to the amusement of the guys laying the base for my shed, next project, but it 'sucked like a miner smokin a rollie after a cave in' and not a stone was left in the grass.

    Another fantastic review peter. £60/€70. Well worth the money. I spoke to a few building guy's recently; just conversational. & I noticed & they told me, they use Aldi/Lidl power tool's. I asked them why? & basically to sum up there thoughts...they have the Makita, festools, Dewalts etc but on site, they bring there cheap tools in case they get stolen. & if they break, there cheap to replace. But they all did say one thing: the quality for money is there! My little schappach band saw is still chooching along after 6 months. €110/£80. Well worth it mate.

      Actually peter, I'm looking at getting a corded table saw. I don't no about a cheap one. There's the Lidl one next week €130. It's the most dangerous machine in a workshop, so im thinking: safety first but also middle of the road. €450-€550. As a pro, wud you have any recommendations?

      me aul jazzer. Have a look at the Metabo TS. I love mine. It is not the most dangerous tool in the workshop, that's why we have push sticks. For repetition of cuts, you can't beat them. Once you are comfortable with them, you will wonder how you got by without one. I use a Class M Metabo dust extractor with mine - cleans the TS up nicely. The most dangerous tool is any that produces dust or paint particles - I am suffering from chest problems because I didn't wear masks or had adequate dust extraction (now moving over to M Class). Dust extraction and masks is a must before turning on any tool. Hope that helps. PS the LIDL TS is ok and will do to get you started. Both LIDL and ALDI produce excellent tools that now populate my on-site kits, along with Metabo stuff.

    I guess there will be a follow-up video in a while. There are a few things that I feel was a bit neglected, which others mentioned in the comments also.
    - Antistatic hose which nowadays also is smooth, on the festool.
    - Higher air flow (by specs) at lower power usage. Power usage is usually not that interesting but it might reflect a better construction which might lead to higher...
    - ... suction when the bag is (near) full?
    - And of course filtering which is really good on festool vacs. I have a midi and the air is really clean that comes out of it compared to all vacs I have been around, including household versions. This is probably a good point for those that are using them in others home. It doesn't smell of dust afterwards.
    Some things for thought for the follow-up video :)

    Workzone tools just get better and better. The only thing I would say is that they are really aimed at the hobby/diyer.
    I bought a belt sander from them about five years ago and it was great using it occasionally. Never missed a beat. Then about 3 months ago I was using it for a bigger job that required it to be in constant use hours at a time for a week. The bearings just melted with that kind of usage. Apart from that workzone tools are great.

    Good video Pete, I couldn't cope without a power take off it's the whole point of having a decent vac on site. I use a Machine Mart Einhell wet/dry R2D2 type, which lifts the carpet provided the filter is clean. I also find it good for vacuuming outside when I've done a lot of cutting and inevitably the clients drive is dusty, you can never get it all with a brush. The reason why they have identical suction is because they both have the suction power maxed out with that hose diameter. Think of it this way, the vacuum does not really suck anything in. It just removes the air in front of the hose and then the atmospheric pressure pushes the dirt in. From this we can conclude that there is a maximum "suction" force for any vacuum cleaner. Also that this force would be less on top of a mountain for example. If you max out the air removal that is it. You have full atmospheric pressure. Where you would see a difference is if you were to increase the hose diameter. Then one vacuum would suck better then the other. Won`t work with a tool though since the maximum airflow through the tool would not change with hose diameter.

    The flex isn't no where near long enough, the flexi pipe is useless, and it doesn't fit the Sander that was on sale at the same time, so I binned the flexi and used the one that came with the Sander it's very good quality and longer, I also made some a adapters to fit the Sander and now it works pretty good, I can reach the ceilings now with the longer flex and it also fit's in the lid..

    Finally got an Aldi model from Ebay at £39.95. Wow. It is certainly a good little tool for me with DIY, although I still use a mask in my garage. I've tried a cyclone with my shop vac and it was great but so bulky and unsteady unless I was prepared to build a trolley for them both. The little Aldi chap will solve a lot of dust problems for me, so thank Peter for stimulating the chase for me.

    You missed the most important issue which is the quality of the filtration, how much dust does the Aldi put back into the atmosphere compared to the festool

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      No, I didn’t ‘miss’ it, I left it out as Scheppach couldn’t confirm their rating when I made the video. Now they have & it’s >3 microns, the Festool is a full Class L vac at >1 micron. So the Scheppach is good for sawdust, maybe OK for sanding depending on what you’re sanding. Also shows how good the Festool is that it can match the ‘suckage’ of the larger motor /bigger, shorter hosed Scheppach whilst still filtering to >1 micron. As I say in the video, nobody’s going to be ditching their Festool vacs for the Aldi, but the Aldi is about 1000 times better than no vac at all 👍👍

    • @georgeoldridge
      @georgeoldridge 6 лет назад +2

      Peter Millard thanks for the update but the festool can also have the hepa filter fitted filtering down to .3 of a micron, will you be testing specs of the two vacs by checking the air quality ? . Also the hose on the festool is anti static which should be considered.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Thanks George. Fair point about HEPA, but a/. that's a US standard, and b/. they're not widely available here in the UK. Also, it would be an add-on, and I try to keep the tools I look at completely stock to get the 'as they come' out of the box experience that any punter would get when purchasing in this country. As for checking the air quality of the exhaust, if I can do it in a visually interesting way with reasonably rigorous methodology, then yes I will, but - spoiler - I expect the Festool to be approximately 3 times better 👍👍

    • @okafka5446
      @okafka5446 4 года назад

      @@10MinuteWorkshop Isn't the true test of a dust extractor, how efficient it is at containing the dust? If the bag doesn't catch it and the filter doesn't either, then presumably it either gets exhausted into your work area and into the motor housing?
      Is there any chance you could use that particle counter of yours and do a comparative test of the 2 extractors?
      My suspicion is the Workzone will act as a projector of smaller dust particles - the foam filter looked pretty suspect - which make it useless for many of the purposes it's supposedly designed for. Just caught sight of @Steve Bignell's comment below, which bears this out. So in certain applications the Workzone will actively diminish the quality of the air in the workspace, and serve to spread quantities of fine dust throughout. It has to be said that Festool themselves only recommend the CTL SYS for 'low quantities of coarse dust', you have to get to the CTM 26/36 to get to 'Workshop, Industry' and then up to the Autoclean versions for 'large quantities of fine dust'.
      In design terms a simple fix for the SYS would be to be able to adjust the suction - in many situations it helps to turn down the suction a bit - you still maintain excellent collection, you reduce the strain on the bag (it won't clog as quickly) and filter, and for finer sanding applications you don't have your sander being pulled down so forcefully on the area.

  • @shadow582a
    @shadow582a 3 года назад

    Just watched your video. I realized this is two years old. The big distinction for me between the two vacs is the CTS SYS has a HEPA rated secondary filter. I would be concerned when vacuuming fine dust (like from sanding) with the Aldi that it would just send it through the bag and back out the exhaust vent into a cloud around you.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Whilst I appreciate your point, it’s important to understand that HEPA is a US standard that has no relevance elsewhere. Here in the UK the CTL SYS doesn’t come with HEPA filters, nor are they available - see above. And as the Aldi/Schepoach is 240v only, Aldi vs Festool is probably not a decision you’ll ever need to make. You might also like to take a look at video 216 - Bad Idea, or good? P1 here -

    Interesting video, thanks - I would have liked to see how the Aldi vac worked after sucking up some dust - I've found that the Achilles' heel of cheap vacs is that sanding dust (especially from filler) blinds the bags and filters and the suction really drops off. Obviously your Festool has survived 3 years of this! I'd love to see a repeat of the filler sanding test that you did when comparing cheap vs Festool sanders as a way of comparing vacs. (I'll also be a bit pedantic and point out that static suction pressure - which is what you're comparing - is not the same as airflow. It's possible to get high suction as pretty low airflow,).

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! Fair point about static suction pressure bs airflow - but how would I show (in a visually interesting way) airflow at the tool? And yes, the Festool bags typically are discarded way before they are filled when sanding filler - which is why it’s a shame that there’s no disposable bag for the Aldi. In this video the Festool had a new bag and (very) recent filter and the Aldi was brand new; I’ll be doing more tests when I’ve put a few miles under the Aldi 👍👍

    I think you laid out the choice to make at the start of the video when you gave the advantages of the sustainer system. Festool is expensive, but a lot of the money is in the quality of the tool and the system built around each one.
    This allows you to deal with many situations that just having another brand tool won't.
    That Festool vac has 2 different sets of nozzles, 3 different bags types and other accessories including the CT wings available. Which along with Sustainer compatibility will allow you to cope with more situations that you find yourself in. Same reasons as the saws and other tools.
    Other tool brands and tools do the job perfectly well but the system approach allows you to work in more situations and profit due to efficiency.
    Tools are offset against your tax bill anyway which could be to your advantage.
    Cheap and DIY tools are really good quality compared to 20-30 years ago as manufacturing has improved, so the economics might work for some people. It's all about your approach to your work and organization.

      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      No, it stank horribly after opening the "daisy fresh" :-D box and unwrapped the plastic. The plastic itself, not in use, yet. I had to let it vent outside for a week.

    As usual I found your video engaging to watch and well presented. Slightly disappointed that you didn't compare the vacs in some kind of realistic test. Not sure about you, but I don't normally use a vac for lifting up wood. Lol. Maybe you could have done some tests on the amount of dust left with your Mitre saw. Or maybe you could use your air quality meter after sanding with each vac

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Thanks! No, I don’t typically lift blocks of wood with my sander, but as I say in the video, it was a way of demonstrating the amount of air each vac was moving through the tool, rather than the theoretical throughout at the motor that the manufacturers tend to quote. It’s about as ‘real world’ as you can get without turning the video into an ‘open university’-style science experiment. Yes, the difference in filtration will also have an affect, but again, how do I show that in a video and keep the ‘science’ rigorous enough for it to be meaningful? My air quality monitor works well, but it’s not a ‘scientific’ instrument. How far can I realistically go - will I need a clean room?
      I’m sorry you were disappointed, but with a video like this - a simple comparison between two vacuums - I do what I can 👍👍

    • @ksp1278
      @ksp1278 6 лет назад

      Peter Millard Hi Peter. Please don't be offended. I enjoyed the video and appreciated the demonstration that you did. However it is not suction (static pressure) that captures dust. It is the amount of air being moved (airflow). Your experiment didn't measure airflow. It measured static pressure.

    It continues to surprise me that aldi (and lidl)s offerings are so different in different countries. Interesting video and amazed how good the Aldi is. With relation to the test showing the level of suction both machines have, it reminds me of the demo they do on shopping channels when they pick up a bowling ball and that’s suppose to show you how wonderful the vacuum they are trying to flog is. Not totally sure of the physics but it you create a partial vacuum then it’s going to hold on the item you are trying to lift and it’s not really dependant on the power or efficiency of the machine. Just an observation and am ready to proved wrong.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Thanks! Ha! I see where you’re coming from re the shopping channel demo and I don’t disagree that what I did was an imperfect test, but I deliberately picked up the lump(s) of MDF & moved them around to try and ‘break the seal’ . Plus, this level of suction came through a tool, with abrasive attached - it’s not the kind of perfect seal that you’d get with, say the end of a hose and a bowling ball. But yes - I think there are a few more tests to be done on the little Aldi 👍👍

    • @priestland1
      @priestland1 6 лет назад

      Peter Millard could prove or disprove my theory if you could somehow reduce the the power output of the vacuums and see if their lifting power is diminished.

    When you open the lid of the Festool i'm noticing that very fine dust has leaked in time from the seal of the bag opening. I know the filters will take care of this, but it shouldn't happen, it will shorten the filters' lifespawn/efficiency.
    A bag compartment should be 100% clean imo.

    I have the Scheppach version, was great when I got it, but very disappointing in use. The filters didn't seem to protect the motor well enough, so after about 3 months use the power was greatly reduced, motor heated up severly when running for any length of time and it started thowing out more dust from the outlet than it collected in the bag!! Also putting that hose away again became a pain in the a***! I can't recommend buying this as a long term tool I'm afraid..
    I used it with a cheap master and slave double plug so I had the power take off, I can recommend them!

      I had a Scheppach getting on for 5 years ago(?) which lasted all of 3-4 months of light use (I didn't have a mitre saw, track saw or router(s) back then). I've now had the CT-SYS for a couple of years and throw way more at it. It connects to all my tools without adaptors that fall off, auto start and the longer (non snagging) hose is a joy. Assuming the Scheppach lasts 4 months (even with heavier use) I'd have gone through 6 of them. So yeah, I'd say it was worth it.

    Hi Peter. I’m wondering whether you could compare the quality of the output air cleanliness using the particle meter that you’ve shown in other videos. Something tells me that the Festool probably would win that test.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Almost certainly - the Festool is a Class L vac (>1 micron filtration) the Aldi unclassified but Scheppach say >3 microns filtration. But in all honesty, I don’t know how I could realistically show that without some kind of clean room, and I’m not sure my little air quality monitor is up to the job on something that specific. But yes, it’s something I plan to try 👍👍

    I paid £30 for mine on an open box markdown... It's a good little vac! There are the limitations, as you point out, but for the cash, you can't argue. I find the dust collection is very good on a track saw, but utterly hopeless on a mitre saw but I suppose that says more about the design of the tool rather than the vac. Very much looking forward to your video on adding a power take off, speaking as someone with very limited sockets in the garage (workshop). Thanks for posting!

I've had a good search over the weekend and I haven't been able to turn anything up that's similar - plenty of stepped plastic adapters, but nothing like the rubber ones I have; makes you appreciate the rubber-ends to the Festool hoses, tbh - maybe there's a way to adapt a Festool end to fit??

    when I started to learn kitchen fitting in the early 90s I found systainers and FESTO tools so have standardised ever since. now I buy the makita copies which are cheaper and don't show the muck up.
    we used to joke about having a systainer with a vacuum in 20 years ago as they didn't exist (but they finally made one) so when working in two places a few years ago I bought the scheppach HD2P and it does all you need at a basic level. I've used it in the workshop with a triton dust bucket. but I also use the einhell wet and dry with power take off because I cannot justify the expense of the festool vacs.
    the scheppach isn't ideal and the hose storage is a pain but when you can get the aldi version for 40 quid off ebay!!!!! the only real downside to it besides that is if you batter the power switch it sticks so gluing a patress grommet to the case might help.
    for the super budget option I used to use an old henry hoover with an 8m hose and wireless switches from wickes with the controller velcroed onto my saw. I could leave the vac outside downstairs while fitting bedrooms upstairs. at home I have an old house cylinder vac in the garage roof hosing down to my dust bucket as I hate throwing stuff away.
    I did replace the sponge at the back of the duct box with some better filter material and I upcycled some microfibre dust bags by taping a ridge in the vac pipe then using some shock cord and a cordlock to grip it in position. I need to see if my einhell bags will fit as I can use them in this one until its full then move them to the bigger vac to continue filling.

      Peter Millard I see your point, at the end it matters how it performs when in use. The cheaper version cuts corners with lenght, diameter of hose and les restricting airflow filter, but if it is within the limits ones has, its dirt cheap..😉

      Haven’t had a chance to play with the Festool hoses yet - the D27 definitely not, but the D36 might. And no, the filtration certainly won’t be in the same L-class as the Festool, so you’d need to be careful what you use it with. Sawdust would be fine, I’m sure as it’s relatively coarse, but probably not say, MDF. 👍

      @@10MinuteWorkshop Long comment, sorry!
      Apart from PTO and hose / fittings quality, I'm sure it's the filtration quality that accounts for the biggest difference in price. A bit surprised you didn't mention that issue in the vid.
      Re: suckage -- I had to convert m^3/sec to litres/hour from the relevent Screwfix listings to make them comparable - for flow rate, turns out the Scheppach does 33 l/sec compared to the Festool's 50. Clearly that doesn't make much difference to suck-power. Ingenious test!
      I'm super-paranoid about dust - I use a cheap-and-cheerful £50 Titan to collect most of the bigger stuff, AND a 3M HF A2 P3 half-face respirator mask; expensive but worth it for peace of mind. Mostly cos I remember Grandad's garage ankle-deep with drifts of woodturning shavings and mountains of dust on every horizontal surface - I'm certain he never wore a mask in his life - once a year he swept it out with a yard broom just to keep it tidy. I'm sure that he regretted that greatly in the last 10-15 years of his life. It takes a long time to catch up with you, but it's pretty nasty if it does.
      That said, I smoke, so I'm doomed anyway :)

    Would be interested in a (admittedly non-scientific) comparison of what the air quality in your workshop is like after a set amount of time sanding with each extractor attached. Not perfect, but would be an interesting comparison, especially as you have the readings from when you were spraying to be able to help give the air quality readings some sense. Part two perhaps?

      Thanks Giles. I wanted to stay away from anything that was starting to look too much like ‘science’ tbh as it’d be a can of worms re the methodology; the ‘10-minute workshop’ isn’t a clean room and I’m the last person to be doing actual science! Plus I know from the specs that the Festool is a Class L vac (>1micron filtration) where the Aldi is unclassified, though Scheppach say it has >3 micron filtration. So no prizes for guessing which one would have the cleaner exhaust air. Good point about having a baseline WRT the spraying though - there might be something in it, as long as I can make it visually interesting, of course 👍👍

    Mine CTL SYS burned out just 1 month outside the warranty, used lightly too! Not sure if I should replace the motor or get a cheaper one. Cost of the motor for festoon is more than Aldi vac.

      It's a tough one isn't it? Overall I'd take a repaired Festool over a new Aldi, I think, just for the convenience of being able to keep it in a stack of systainers on a roll-board - but if that's not what you do, then there are certainly cheaper options. 👍

    Thanks Peter, I grabbed on at £30 as it’s a handy size and even if no good for fine dust it will be handy to hoover the car.
    Be interesting to know about filters. I assume they are both two stage filtration. 1. The bag and 2. The filter
    I guess Festool much better due to its large surface area paper filter opposed to the small workzone foam one.
    I think it is important to understand the filtration as I would not want to use it for MDF if it does not filter MDF dust.
    Of course I wear a mask but customers don’t
    Have you any details on the filtration ?
    I’m just off to google👍🏻😁
    Thanks for another great video

      Just had a google and workzone I believe is 3 micron.

      Hi Jase, and thanks! Yes, I didn’t have the info on the Scheppach when I did the vid, but it’s 3 microns for the Scheppach bag and 1micron for the Festool. So fine for general sawdust, probs not so good for MDF without a mask, as you say. But about 1000 times better than nothing at all, of course... Plus it would make a great base for a DIY cyclone project 👍👍
