I remember my grandmother bought this game for me when I was a kid and I played it all the time. It was a short game so it was fun to play and beat in one sitting. RIP grandma 2009.
So Data East's first game on the Genesis was a pretty good one, but I have to say - with a soundtrack this good, it doesn't really matter how well the game plays. You'd still want to play it anyway.
NintendoComplete Nice playthrough! Did you already play Sonic Classic Heroes yet? If not, please do! And also, if you already did, give me the link to the replying comment!
Original arcade music was great, but this home version got the Hitoshi Sakimoto treatment (his sound engine is identifiable on Genesis games like this one, Crude Busters, and Bad Omen) and that is a damned good thing. No, it's not Contra, but then again, sometimes a man wants to play something like Contra that isn't Contra, this game fits the bill nicely.
This is great music that has stuck with me for over 20 years, but nothing gets my nostalgia for Genesis music like the Streets of Rage series. And speaking of 16Bit in general, Super Metroid is probably my favorite. Bout to look up more on Hitoshi Sakimoto.
@@roderickstockdale1678 Crude Busters is Two Crude Dudes, Bad Omen is the Japanese name for Devilish. Crude Busters is an arcade port on the Genesis/Mega Drive, Bad Omen/Devilish is also a ball and paddle type game with an actual story on the same console. Look them up.
Bloodreign1 I remember Two Crude Dudes for Genesis, and I also remember Devilish for it. Two Crude Dudes the sequel to Bad Dudes. But I didn’t know the Japanese names. Devilish reminded me of Alien/Devil’s Crush for TurboGrafx.
The game had a interesting premise too - the soldier's family was kidnapped because his father made a serum that would make people immune to illegal drugs like cocaine, heroin, etc. From Wikipedia - "In the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version, the main character is Johnny Ford who's a member of an operative group who shuts down drug cartels in South America. After completing his last mission, Johnny returned home only to find it in shambles, and he sees a note in which King Crimson kidnapped his entire family. The reason for the abduction is that Johnny's father, Malcolm Ford, was developing a serum which could help people break their addictions to all narcotics. Since the government is unable to help Johnny, he sets off on his own to rescue his family and destroy King Crimson's empire of evil for good."
I was super young when I played this. The only parts I remember were the Armory where you can resupply, the dude telling you "We have your family", and being able to "buy" your family members to save them. Don't know if I beat the game or not... probably. Definitely remember saving family members, just none of the gameplay lol. I was probably five or six.
Data East often made games that were too ambitious for the hardware they ran on. DE employees just had fun making games from what I read, whether they were crap games or not, they enjoyed making them, and making some of them quite odd.
I remember this in the arcade. This was next to Strider and chose to play Strider more. I never knew what reason was for collecting keys in this game was
The tree seems so easy here, in the c64 version we had just 1 lift. I never beat it. And the flamethrower was pretty useles in the c64 version it was less than half of what you have here. But anyways this game was fun and i played it with my brother forever.
pandnh4 he could have kept going and not let the tank come up in the first place, he had max power up he could have destroyed the tank just like he did the last ones

Agreed. Amazing sound track. Possibly the best 16 bit console music ever.

This game was a blast I especially loved the music it always kept me going even after getting far and losing lol
Taking on a squadron of F-16s with a spread gun - how badass is that?

that is an interesting premise. too bad the game is crappy
@Yosef Crappy? It's a great game. Such a blast to play.
And that music is epic!

The final boss is pure nightmare fuel! 😬
So my relatives were really guns this entire time...I KNEW it!
starofjustice1 Crap, it's like a terrible Short Circuit sequel
Awesome vid, very classical😍😍😍😍😊😊😊💜💜💜💜, the game is great too🤗🤗🤗

Looks fun! But who ripped who? Did Contra rip off this game or vice versa?
Its my childhood game. Can plz how i can download?
How you rotate your gun on sega genesis?
Really childhood favourite game anyone now's how to download this game
The hell is up with the ending?? He takes down a monster in space, next he runs up a ladder to a sunset..
Did Konami sue Data East for making such an obvious Contra clone?
No, but I think 20th Century may have sued Konami for ripping their Rambo, Predator and Alien franchises😂
