Almost 30 years later and the best middle finger to the music industry ever done. He's singing about how watered down the industry and talent has gotten than he doesn't even have to provide content. Just something catchy and the masses will eat it up. Can't wait till Friday seeing them again at Charlestown WV and a blue travler show is always mind blowing
And with the most cliched chord progression in all of music, Pachelbel's Canon in D. Maybe also a bit of a dig at the sincerity of weddings?
Only Billy Joel's The Entertainer comes close.
@@indef2def Just more of a testament to how great Canon in D is as a composition.
I dont think its the industry he is flipping off. Pretty sure he is mocking us for being so easily led.
@@crazytrain639-cg8uh no he took a shot at the industry because of the way they tried to market them and change them
The lead singer of Blue Traveler has got to be the best harmonica player I have ever heard. I have never heard a person use a harmonica like he does and it really takes the place of a lead guitar solo.
yea he reminds me of Charlie Daniels with the fiddle.
Never heard anyone who even COULD play just one note from a harmonica at a time, let alone like the way he does.
I watched a video of him recently and he said something like "I'm arguably one the best players in the world, thank God there is no such thing as the best, but I am pretty damn good" LOL
Kind of funny because I thought he died. He was 500lbs and I thought "Oh, this is sad, another tragic loss, he's going to die"... Then he showed up on some late night show, minus 300 pounds, doing one of their songs and I thought "Oh my god, they're so lucky they found someone who can sing like him and play the harmonica like him". Had no idea it was the same guy.

I know I’m late but he had gastric bypass surgery.
At one point he was so heavy, he never left the stool he sat on, and it started affecting his vocals.
BJ , you're more right than you know. This song is genius. The music is Pachelbel's Canon in D major which has been used in dozens of pop songs and in about every third wedding ever (if you listen to the original, you'll know it). Apparently, it is like hypnotic to the human ear. So you're right cause what he's saying in the lyrics is "I can say blah blah blah and you'll still eat this song up, cause THE HOOK. Love the show!
Every five years or so, some pop band makes a fortune on Pachelbel's Canon. Asia and BJ should react to it.
I’ve loved this song since it came out when I was like 8 years old and I’ve never realized that it’s Pachelbels Canon! That’s so cool thanks for the info!
There's an old video still on RUclips called "Pachelbel Rant", where comedian Rob Paravonian hates on Canon in D, because it's used in so many songs. This is a vid they should also react to :)
Canon in D, by the way, IS actually my favorite ever classical piece of music, but the rant is still funny :)
Pachelbel Rant: ruclips.net/video/JdxkVQy7QLM/видео.html
@@bryansproles2879 I know.... Too funny, and agree for the reaction.
As a classical harpist I cannot overstate how much I hate Pachelbel's Canon in D major! This is due to how many times I've had to play it and that damnable coda!!!!!! My fingers have bled over this singluar work. However I must agree that so many songs not just heavily borrow from it but seem to tranform the orginal to whatever the time period is. If I didn't have to play it so much I would give it higher praise.
Seriously ppl find another song to request especially at weddings!!!!!!
This song is genius!!! Basically he's saying it doesn't matter what I sing about or what I say... as long as it has a good hook and its catchy.... you'll be back to listen again. Go and just read the lyrics and you'll get a good understanding. BTW the lead singer is the harmonica player! Great content as always! Love you guys!
Yeah it's the singer, and he's the Stevie Ray Vaughan of harmonica.
Yep this is one of the smartest songs I've ever heard!
Agreed.
And they were right. This song was all over the radio for like two years. I still hear it a lot on adult alternative and indy rock stations.
I sang this song a few times before I realized what he was saying. I’m not the sharpest bulb in the lighthouse
John Popper( lead vocals/ harmonica goat) is an amazing artist, he has jammed as a guest with many artist. His vocals are amazing, but his harmonica playing is out of this world. He does a cover with The Dave Mathews Band of Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower, where he covers Jimi's guitar solo with the harmonica. WOW, just WOW.
I saw him play with a band called Frogwings in 1999 at Toads Place in New Haven CT. It was John Popper of Blues Traveler, Derek Trucks when he was 19 the lead guitarist from his Jazz Band at the time Otiel Burrige from The Allman Brothers Band as well as Butch Trucks and Carlos Quinones from the Allman Brothers Band. They put on an awesome show.
Popper has been called the "Hendrix of the Harmonica."
Hopper proves his point again 30 years later by having RUclipsrs review the song and end up loving it! It’s f’ing so brilliant!
He sings like he plays the harmonica with similar runs and vibrato… I’ve loved this band since high school makes me feel a since of euphoria like no other band
John Popper is one of the most underrated singers from the 90's.....not to mention his harp skills.
Funny song, very clever. Ironic the concept hadn’t been made earlier. Blues Traveler is great in concert
Dude played the harmonica like a lead guitarist. insane.
" It doesn't matter what I say, so long as I sing with inflection ". Thanks, Love it.
Nice Love Blues Traveler! Got to love the harmonica solo. Run-Around is another popular song of theirs..worth checking out
I'm sitting here watching Asia working it out because she knows the song is much more than what she's hearing at face value and his awesome voice and their harmonies. This song has a lot to say and it's freaking genius. I'm glad you guys finally did this one.
I love Blues traveler!!! I have all of their albums. 👌 I’ve seen them 3 times and they are totally amazing live!!👍 John Popper is sings a mile a minute and then he’s blowing amazement out of his harmonica!!! Crazy amount of energy, creativity and precision!!!👌🎶👍🎼✌️😁
He’s got a cool vibrato; they’re great in concert
Yes they are. Amazing musicians. The bass player fucking shreds if you listen closely.
Such a great, clever song! They are definitely underrated overall!
Super happy to see Blues Traveler getting some love. They're awesome!
Asia's new hair is magnificent!!
This was the first real parody of the four chord Pachebelian song… and it was a HUGE hit. Proud of you two for picking up what was being put down. It doesn’t mean that you can’t still groove to it. The hook brings you back to a heartfelt melody, and it ain’t no lie. Tons of pop songs are built on this foundation.
Nailed it, BJ. One could not have explained the meaning of the song better. And by the way, it's the singer (John Popper) who is playing the harmonica.
And it's written all over Asia's face, this probably just became one of her favorite songs.
John Popper is amazing. Their live shows are amazing. Great suggestion❤️
they teach this song in music theory classes, its so genius. and John Popper is definitely one of the best, if not the best, living harmonica player
It's basically him or Stevie Wonder.
true that!
Like Stevie, he may be one of the best song writers.
Good thing he could sing and make a harmonica sound like an angel.
“Today’s lesson: listen to Pachelbel’s Canon in D and then just repeat it.”
@@michaelwardle7633 Only if you want the easiest shortcut of all time to writing a catchy song. Otherwise come up with your own progression and never win a Grammy. 🤠
Such a cool sound. They were incredibly good in concert.
His harmonica is the best I’ve ever witnessed and second to almost none
Try and listen to “The Gunfighter”. Some of the greatest lyrics ever written. John Popper is awesome. (Harmonica and Vocals)
That is exactly what he's singing about. He's saying he could sing about anything he wants and the words don't even matter it's the hook that brings you back.
John Pooper is an incredible poet as well as a singer, guitarist and brilliant harmonica player ❤️
I was lucky enough to be in the right time and place a few years ago and see these gentlemen live when I was already a fan and seeing John Popper sing and play that harmonica in person is one of the best experiences of my life.
love how she was feelin the solo harmonica!
John popper is not of this world !! His singing and harmonica playing are EPIC !!!
I got to see these guys way back in the day with The Barenaked ladies. 2 Headliners in 1 show. It was Amazing. These guys put on one hell of a show. If you have never listened to Barenaked ladies... give them a try as well. Very good band and tons of fun!
Some of the best harp playing ever! 🎶❤️
Great respect for Blues Travelers. The lead singer almost died performing because that's how hardcore he is. I think it was more than once that he had to get rushed to the hospital after a concert
BJ's evaluation was spot on I felt like he was speaking what I was thinking. Cool af guys thanks.
I just saw them live in Cancun at Hootiefest 10 days ago!
Oh yes the hook willl alays bring us back upon that you can rely....
Gods the beauty of seeing another person hearing the wonderful music I grew up with.
The Lead Singer,, John Popper Is Also The One Playing That Mean Nasty Harmonica.
Epically underrated song. I miss the 90’s
I met John Popper once. I told him, “I play harmonica too. Not as good as you, but I play.” He said, “It’s like anything in life. Sometimes you suck, and sometimes you blow.” That was the perfect answer coming from him.
Blues Traveller is a great, fun band. I always felt like he was kind of making fun of the music industry itself.
"Run Around" is one of their radio hits.
Yes, it's definitely a jab at the industry, and so is Runaround (video included).
There is alot to unpack. The Hook is applied to love, money, society and so much more referenced in this song. Don't forget about the rest of the band. Popper is so good but his band is also amazing.
I love this damn song so much!! I’m originally from South Florida but there was a time where I lived in Orlando and this song came out during that time and I was living my best life going to the best bars hanging out, chilling, listening to music and this song brings back a lot of good memories song on the radio when I’m driving down the road it just brings back great memories.!
This song played at the end of every single Lifetime Move Network teen angst movie of the 90s ❤️🤣 I know because I watched all of them. 🤣🤣
They were trolling pop music while simultaneously creating their biggest hit.
Please do more Blues Travelers. They are so talented!
Captain Hook still bringing me back years later.
Such a CLEVER song and most people don't realize it until they read the lyrics. Now that you got it...read the first 2 verses again...
Also note, this lyric video is wrong and screws up the meaning from the start...
"It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel I'll convey
Some inner truth or vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing my job then it's your resolve that breaks
Because the Hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The Hook brings you back
On that you can rely
There is something amiss
I am being insincere
In fact I don't mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much Peter loved her
What made the Pan refuse to grow
Was that Hook brings you back"
One of the most clever songs written, so good.
I really love all your videos because you guys are educated about who the artists are and the music even if the artist is new to you. You guys have the best reaction videos!
My buddy and I would jam this song in high school back in the mid 90's. He passed in 99, so when I hear this song it immediately takes me back.
Yes! Love this jam. It gets you going for sure.
Asia's face when Popper's harmonica goes off and the last staccato verse: fantastic wonderful realization.
It was himself playing the harmonica the lead singer, as far as the best harmonica player in the world? it wasToots Thielemans ............ Born: Apr 29, 1922 · Brussels, Belgium
Died: Aug 22, 2016 · Brussels, Belgium ............Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Isidor, Baron Thielemans, known professionally as Toots Thielemans, was a Belgian jazz musician. He was known for his harmonica playing, as well as his guitar, whistling skills, and composing. According to jazz historian Ted Gioia, his most important contribution was in "championing the humble harmonica", which Thielemans made into a "legitimate voice in jazz". He eventually became the "preeminent" jazz harmonica player.
So happy to find you listening to this band. John Popper is so freaking talented. I was lucky enough to meet him on vacation. He was playing the piano and singing while I sat next to him. Just a fantastic memory. ❤
Hook

Suck it in, suck it in, suck it in, if you're Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn
Make a desperate move or else you'll win and then begin to see
What you're doing to me, this MTV is not for free
It's so PC it's killing me, so desperately I sing to thee of love
Sure, but also of rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I can't keep these feelings on the shelf
I've tried, well, no, in fact I lied
Could be financial suicide, but I've got too much pride inside
To hide or slide, I'll do as I'll decide and let it ride until I've died
And only then shall I abide this tide
Of catchy little tunes of hip three minute diddys
I wanna bust all your balloons
I wanna burn all your cities to the ground
I've found I will not mess around unless I play then hey
I will go on all day, hear what I say
I have a prayer to pray that's really all this was
And when I'm feeling stuck and need a buck
I don't rely on luck because
The hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook
On that you can rely
Thanks Kimberly for the suggestion!
Best harmonica player I've ever heard period
Just heard this on the radio yesterday.
There is a great live video of Dan Aykroyd and Blues Traveler at House of Blues New Orleans.
It is truly awesome that Blues Traveler is bashing the music industry while making a hit song and most people have no clue what it's about!
Thiir album FOUR I about wore out in college!! They are GREAT!
For me as a metal fan, the part that gets stuck in my head is the riff.
I actually really like these two. Very deep in their analysis
Bobby Sheehan and John Popper amazing musicians! My ears are eternally grateful! RIP Bobby 🙏
This song is genius! Bj you are spot on
The hook a lot of times is the chorus, sometimes guitar solo, drum solo, sax, harmonica etc. Love this song, lyrics, vocals, and harmonica. Interesting when I listen to Bruce Springsteen's Thunderroad, first song I've noticed that doesn't have a chorus. Great reaction! Thanks!
Thanks for listening
John Popper wore a bandoliers tyle strap with all his different key harmonicas. Like the old Western Moves that held bullets
John Popper is the singer and the harmonica player. Amazing.
Roseanne Bar was their first fan. they made her tv shows intro.
To confuse people what he was singing about he mentioned Peter Pan referring to Hook. Lol he even says he’s going to do it. This song is the best
John Popper's voice is fabulous but his harmonica playing is AMAZING!!! Please react to Blues Traveler Run Around. You will not be disappointed, I promise!
I love, love this song!! Such a talented group. One of the “must see” bands I’d recommend to anyone if they come to your city.
The hook is the icing on the cake 😊
Thank you, Mrs. Jankins!!
I love watching reactions of this song when people put it all together like you did at 2:50 lol
One of the two virtuosos on harmonica I have ever heard.
"This is how you write a song. This is a just a performance. This is how a song works, how music moves you. Come along for the ride, and I'll get paid, because I understand the power of a song's hook." - this song by a crazy skilled and talented musician
The lead singer John Popper also did the music for Roseanne if you can’t tell by the harmonica He was also a guest star on an episode of Roseanne but I knew he did the music for the Roseanne before he was even a guest star because no one plays the harmonica like him💯🎶💙🔥
My brother used to listen to this band back in the day. I remember hearing parts of this album and he sure is talented. The hook does bring me back. Huey Lewis plays the harmonica.
This is the" Seinfeld " of music he just sings stuff but the voice the beat t he sound the "hook" brings you back genius writing lol
John Popper is to Harmonica what Hendrix was to guitar. Absolute virtuoso.
Please do Mountains Win Again..such a deep underappreciated track! Blues Traveler are legend. ❤
I love when Asia says "Come on" and "Yah"! She is feeling it then.
So glad you did this song!!! Trying to get my boy to cover this cause he so can... check his music on my page.
Here is another band that has a really good harmonica player. Check out Rob Piazza and the mighty Flyers. Check out the song Murder in the first degree! Seen them in concert 95 when I was 21. Always wanted to play harmonica like that.
He can play that blues harp like no one else...
John Popper is A BEAST!!! -- A world class harmonica player (and the lead vocalist of Blues Traveler)
Blues Traveler is just a phenomenal band all the way around. John Popper being the singer and the harmonica player seems to get the majority of the attention, but he's only one part of this band. He is certainly a very important part of their sound and he's immensely talented, but the entire band was equally as good. This a very well written song in every way, but, my favorite part of this one is the Bass track. It's such an important part of this song, but often gets over looked because of what's up front and obvious. That bass player was an absolute monster player, his work on the album (Four) is just unreal.
Bobby Sheehan was one of the greatest bass players that ever lived and certainly one of the most under rated. RIP Bobby, gone way too soon but never forgotten
You guys should react to the live version of this from 1995. Amazing.
If you guys havent yet, you NEED to react to Jinjer Pisces. You will NOT regret it! Your mind will be blown. Trust that.
Mr. Popper singing with "Inflection", he is also the Harmonica player, he even went to college for Harmonica.
man this band is and was amazing.....early 90's with the grunge air of truth in the air ....they spoke truth man!!
My absolute favorite 🎵
Blues Traveller is a great band and this is a terrific song. John Popper is a phenomenal singer and a total virtuoso on the harmonica. Possibly one of if not the best on the planet.
Hey Ms Jenkins. if you know, you know.
anyways... believe it or not, i've actually seen reactions to this song praising it, loving it, but had no idea what it was about lol. it's a very catchy song with a great hook :) which made it even funnier that the reactor didn't "get it".
This was so great! It was almost like hearing it again for the first time to hear it along with you. This song came out when I was a young teen and so it was awesome to revisit it. But now I want to watch you see John Popper perform it! I remember being so into how he looked so surprising for the singer of a pop hit!
The hook does indeed bring you back
This song literally got my dumb ass - the first time I heard it I was like "man, this song is GREAT! It's so melodic and radio-friendly!", no idea what the song was about at the time. Then I read the lyrics - and yeah, it's basically a song can be literally about nothing but if it sounds good you'll LOVE it. Fuck - this song got my number good lol!
It's amazing to watch the song do exactly what it was intended to do, proving the entire point. And the whole "music reaction video" concept wasn't even close to being conceived when this came out.
Just my jive. Love both.of you. Take cares
