@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Doc! I would like to know, I am very low rear oil brakes and practically almost finish the front oil brakes in the brakes tanks. My bike is a sportster 2017. Bought it on mid 2018 practically new and all filled up. I didn't change the brakes oil because wasn't necessary and because the bike has only less than 5000 km. What I want to do is just fill the brakes oil dot 4 original harley davidson for my sportster without bleeding her our. The oil color still clear. BUT Can I actually just fill the oil at this point? I searched around but if the oil is almost finish and it's not darken that much is that all so bad? Let me know if it''s a big deal please. Thanks
So Doc, i have a question. How often should a cable clutch on an 2014 FLHTP be replaced? I had heard that because of all the hard riding we do and the demands we put on the bikes that the cable should be replaced about every 5 years? Thoughts
Jose' A nice preventive maintenance question. I have not tracked a clutch cable life. With proper maintenance which include cleaning and lube, a cable can last over 5 years. But of coarse where the bike lives ie outside or in. In the desert or swamp plays a big part. Most of the time it comes down to “feel”. Easy to pull or not
If it is a OEM original clutch cable and being a 2014 FLHTP it should never need any lube on the cable , Harley Davidson started using a cable that had the steel core wrapped in a teflon type coating. If you or your service technician used any lube on it will cause the teflon coating to swell and make the cable pull excessively harder. We have replaced many clutch cables at my dealership on bikes that backyard butchers have lubed. It was the late 2000's when the cables were changed.
HD uses semi-metalic material in the pads to increase stopping ability in rain. A small tech tip. remove pads, bevel the edges, clean and install....Doc
I hope I get a reply. I'm looking into a 2012 Heritage classic from a dealer. With around 10,000 miles. Do you think it'll be a good idea to get used, or just save more for a new bike?
10,000 miles is low for a 2012. Ask to see the service records. Buying used can be OK if you do your research. Buying new comes with a 2 year warranty. ~ Doc
I had a 2015 Street 750. Jacked up the bike to clean the wheels. Started spinning the rear tire. Before I wet the wheel. Heard a Squeak. Dealership Writer heard the noise over the phone. I also recorded it with my phone. Stopped making the noise when I took to the shop the next day. Played the video to the mechanic. He shakes the rear wheel. NPF.
Great info and demo. A picture is worth a thousand and a vid is worth a million. Thanks a million!
Use new bolts.
Boy I'm glad I watched this one.
Thanks Doc!
Great video, you may want to touch on rotor parallelism in conjunction with runout. Keep up the good work!

Sir great video, but you didn’t Mention the rear brake run out can you explain that one later video. Thks

Would them being out cause high speed wobble?
There is some thought that a brake could drag and have some input to front end.....more likely "high speed" has more to do with wobble...Doc

Ha ha, now I know who's the one coming off the freeway at 80 mph. 😅
Is the problem the bearings or a warped rotor? I had them change out my rotor once and it was fine for a while then the pulsing started again.

Mike Todd yes
Thanks Doc Harley! Keep ‘em come’n!
hey doc would I feel a rumble in my front end of my bike if I was going about 20-30 if my rotor was warped?
That strap placement is not going to do squat if that bike goes over. It will just slide down the engine guard.
Good video though!

Stop what you are trying to do. Get on the Net and find the correct spacer to fit your disc and wheel. Having no spacer is a weak mount…..Doc

how many millimeters in the front rotor? I got 4.5 mm in the back disk but I don't know how many mm in the front disk minimum as well. Thank you.

Bearing replacement ? 50k or 100k, i would hate to replace when it completely fails.

Never buy a brand new motorcycle from a dealership. Made that mistake twice. Always buy used.

@Doc Harley: is that sound as you rotate the front wheel the sound of the brake pads riding on the rotor?
The caliper (with the pads) was not attached. The sound was the dial indicators tip riding the rotor.

You can also get bad run out by forgetting to take off the disk lock. You think I would learn the first time , nope I had to do it again
