  • LaMarcus Aldridge shocked the basketball world this morning by announcing his retirement due to a heart condition that has bothered him his entire career. He was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White during his rookie season with the Portland Trailblazers, a congenital heart condition that puts you at risk of abnormal heart beats. In this video we'll explain what this is and review the anatomy and function of the heart.

      @@saucegod8079 Yea usually u born with it but it's never known until you're older because it's never checked for since there's no complications at first. When I was like 15 or sumth I had to get an echo for non heart issue related reasons and they found out about it. I never even knew cuz I was always healthy and active growing up. Most people never have complications until they're older and by then it's bad and needs to be taken care of with surgery urgently. That's also why you hear of totally "healthy" seeming young people just dying from heart issues out of nowhere when playing sports or working out.

      @SplayMnBoss What are you doing when you get this stabbing pain? Are you exercising or resting? If you worried about heart attack, that pain is usually described as pressure. Chest pain can be hard to diagnose. It could simply be heart burn. The heart hate increase could be caused from pain or nerves. You could be having some runs of SVT or VT. Are you symptomatic other than the pain? Do you feel lightheaded, dizzy, fatigued when this happens?
      I'm only a nursing student. I would consult your doctor if you are able to. They can hook you up to an ECG. It's a machine that looks at how your heart is pumping. They could also do a echocardiogram that can give your doctors an idea at how efficient you heart is pumping. Sorry your experiencing these pains.

    • @NathanPsprague
      @NathanPsprague 3 года назад

      @SplayMnBoss SVT or VT are fancy words for a rapid heart rate. The fact that you are getting this pain while inhaling makes it unlikely that it is related to your heart. Try and quit smoking, that will kill you. Again I am not expert. Try and go see a doctor. You can practice deep breathing exercise to help with lung function and anxiety.

    Thank you for explaining this Dr. I had SVT (Supraventricular Tachycardia) which is very similar to WHW and had a an ablation procedure done to mitigate my condition.

    Am glad he stepped down and hope he'll live a normal, healthy life. He had a great career. An acquired aortal valve insufficiency patient since the age of 22 and with an artificial replacement since 30 (24 years ago), I have an idea how he feels. And thank you - after 45 years of going through ECG checks, I finally get what they show.

    Great stuff. May I ask what software or video editing you use to produce your videos? I would like to do something similar to what you are doing here in the sport of jiu-jitsu. However I am entirely green to making videos and how acquire and ultimately edit clips for educational proposes. Any info you would have would be greatly appreciate. Thanks again for all the great content and your work doc.

    I had WPW syndrome and got an ablation back in 2014. I do not have anymore episodes, however, I have a persistent skipping heart beat that acts up at random. I completely understand his decision to retire. It's a scary condition that makes you feel uneasy

    Similar situation that happened to me trying out for basketball not knowing what's going on suddenly feeling a bit Anxious and I told my coach that my heart was beating to Fast and everyone was making jokes about it at me saying that what's it supposed to do. But really I was experiencing Heart Palpitations at the time which I couldn't handle anymore. It got to point were it would go BOOM out of no where, it's definitely a nerve recking feeling that is scary
