Errata Corrige: I said the MM has a step-up transformer, obviously it's the opposite. Oops! Yes of course. What I meant is that it is actually an MM design, where the MC input uses a SUT to reach MM gain. That is why there is a selector, to engage the SUT.

You're so right. The first time that I heard a Shindo amp was in 2008. The set up was the Auriege with a VTL power amp, Audio Physic speakers (later DeVore) and a Micromega CD player. I was so impressed. My most pleasurable listening experience ever in terms of the quality of sound. Obviously it's all about the song, but all things being equal, your equipment will take you to higher ground. Several months later, I demoed the Vosne-Romanee with the Costese power amp, Wilson speakers and a T&A player alternating with a turntable. I took a friend with me to the demo and he commented on how the sounds of different instruments were coming from different vantage points (sound stage and imaging) of the room. He was a rookie. Personally, what struck me is how lifelike it sounded - as if the musicians were playing live. It was seminal moment. Best audition ever. I would buy it if I could afford it. I could back then, but that is another story.

What I like about Shindo is the build quality and layout which makes them easy to repair, yes they break sometimes but I only do that for my closest friends I have my own projects to build.
Don't get me wrong I like Shindo because they sound good, personally I like what the Japanese do with valves because they don't seem to listen to people who say "it can't be done like this" the japanese put music reproduction first and not how the modern rendering dictates how it should sound.

Congratulations Guido you have purchased a legendary preamplifier that’s a keeper. I too have a true hi-end tube preamplifier that I love and have owned and upgraded to current specs over the 4 decades that Its been in my main system. My preamplifier is a “Vacuum State” FVP that is upgraded to FVP-5A Level which I believe is the same circuit design as the Swiss made model. Designed and built by the late and great Allan Wright. The upgraded completed by Allan’s right hand man Joe Rasmussen. This preamplifier in combination with Joe’s latest “Beyond Triode” power amplifier will rival any hi-end pre and power amplifier combination out there, at any cost. More importantly I just love what it does to my vinyl and digital music, it sounds amazing. There are few amplifiers that can compete with the likes of amplifiers designed by Shindo, Kondo, D’agostino, Pass, Carver, Wright and now Stavros Danos - to name but a few of the greats. Oops I Almost forgot my favourite Australian Joe Rasmussen. Amplifiers by these greats are like Bugatti’s cars and Patek Phillips watches - you never truely own them, your just a custodian of these objects before it’s pasted down to the next lucky minder. Enjoy the music and Guido you live in one of the most beautiful places on earth Tuscany, the food, the history and the beauty is sublime.

The front tubes are on a stage. The arched guilding reminds me of a theater.🎭 As for your tailoring your sound by equipment, I found myself in the same boat. I purchased a Luxman 509x and it was fatiguing until I bought the D-03X. That brought the system completely together with my Sopras. I'm using the D-03X DAC and buying an Aurender streamer next. The synergy between Luxman really balances things out and there's no sharpness or fatigue.

093s /096s I’ll second that thought. To really hear what your Shindo pre is capable of you may need consider the rest of the system. Shindo pre works best with a Shindo power and high sensitivity speakers. Ken Shindo designed systems not individual components. System synergy takes everything to a radically different level. I’ve been through this exercise and an all Shindo system, is way superior. I’m running the Aurieges with a Montille cv391/Mr T, into 093s.
Garrard 301 power supply, EMT cart and an Auditorium 23 Hommage SUT. This combination has finally after 30 years, ended the idea of messing with gear, endless wasteful and ultimately unsatisfactory upgrades. ‘ Hobby’ broken. Go back and listen to Art Dudley, he’s spot on.

With such a wonderful preamp, it would be ashamed to not get the best out of it. Neo wire us good, but it's not just what kind of metal the wires are made of, or if its is OCC or single crystal etc, there are other things too. I would so urge you to try some exotic cables. Many have in home trials and money back guarantees. Or on places like ebay, used cables can be had for way less than original cost. Companies like Audioquest seem to have new statement cables each year or so. Last years or their year before that cables, still make quite a statement.. Even if your think your reproduction is perfect, when you hear something better, you realize it can get even more amazing. With the right cables the improvement is more than subtle.
Being near the beginning of the signal chain, any sound quality lost can't be re-gotten or re-captured. There is more to cable than people think. How they draw the metal, cool it, spacing of strands, diameter of strands, special treatments, connectors, sheathing etc. The exotic cables shouldn't cost anywhere as much as they charge probably, but sometimes they are worth it. An audition first or home trial is recommended. Burn in time for cables is no myth.

I have build valve amps and pres for years and i have move a way from valve rectifiers because silicone diods are better and faster. I built two identical EL84 se amps only different was psu me and my friend prefer whoever had silicon diodes, the jazz musicians in the gang perceived it as being closer to reality than the valve rectifier was due to its speed.

Lovely video Guido! It took you quite some time to get a Masseto in European voltage, however did you consider an American/Japanese one at 110v and use a step down transformer? I have done this with my Nakamichis (purchased from Canada) and they are used in the U.K. without issues…
Also, any thoughts on Shinzo power amps? (I use Audio note U.K. amps but would also love to hear Shindos…).

    Hi,
I finished my research experiment 7 years regarding signal processing. (Audio video, etc)
As here your are willing to be the best of the best, i share them to you. It's up to you to trust or not.
    Summary:
Sound, video, picture, are intends to send emotional feelings.
Feelings are unprecise things that can only occurs by special equipements.
Numeric is to avoid at all unless you get very unprecise equipement (sources DSD2048, Amplifier 25/50/100Mghz switching, EQ, effect also with a very high bandwidth, which is today unavailable), also need to mention the power consumption of devices as soon as you get high bandwidth, perhaps more consumming than analog integrated ones, but no the tube ones! Also, the less solid, reliable, and fixable.
Analog Electonic integrated equipement: Yes the starting point and that's the way to goes for mid range people, look for very high bandwith equipement and you are in the High range and very reliable easy to use, quite cheap, also big power comsuption for the class A very high bandwidth, but you will never get skylight quality with led bulb!!! Over Lifetime Fixable unless you kills the transistors.
Full Analog Equpement: That's definitively the high end, Tube preamplifier, amplifier EQ, etc are just going to give feelings at the best. the more you add to the chains the more you will have feelings. Unfortunately Very costly, very hard to use(pre-heating, limit of continuous usage, bulb replacement, room overal temperature,etc...)/power consumption, this one is about 200-400W, BUT again quality has a cost, and if you have this kind of device, you should be able to handle the electrical Bills. Don't have regret for it's power consumption, ecological people!!, they are polluting more with their electrical cars, air conditioning, x265 decoder, internet fiber connection, iphone LCX etc. So reserved for audiophile/well instructed user/reference sound. Again also over life time fixable till you can get the bulbs. Forgot to mention, the buld will change their sounds over time usage decreasing their dynamics, so keep a good stock of bulb if you use often, afer all these are your main capacitors...
Finally, regarding your feelings. It's depend from which point you are starting, you need to wash them, just because no memory at all regarding the sound, the video and the picture if it's to much spaced, like just 1 weeks is sufficient to brainwash your feelings regarding your listening, viewing experiences and think for exemple that CD or a blue ray is good, whereas it's an evidence today, just trash... It's also an evidence that the DIN norm is not sufficient, you need to measure the full spectrum like they did in the past, the Blue ray (X264 compression, vectorisation, colors texture, 8BIT COLORS SPACE for years, digital video until 2022, the best stealh of this new century, and you paid for this, a simple VHS has already the full NTSC/PAL colors space 😂 with 240TVl raw data ~ 500GO for 1H 😍, and if you think that having 4k HDR with a 100:1 conpression rate woulf help 🤮, better put the VHS onto a 4k HDR screen with an HDR upscaler (yes they do exist, with quite a lot of money, you can get a 12bit 4K one), more feeling will come out, as well as big datarate, of course if you prefer reading the brand of the wiskey they drink...)
The best is to have all of them, spend some time on one, than quicly switch to others ones, Note feelings, repeat the procedure for each type of system/sources, always notes the feelings!
Result at the end, the best feeling you have with a system, is the best system for you.
Don't search, trust me ANALOG the best, Tubes a very good plus. Don't brainwash yourseld with the less emotional technology, because you will endind earing MP3 and watching heavy compressed video, in other words, deaf, and blind.
Easy understanding sentences, ROBOT are precise, no emotions, Humains are unprecise, emotionals. You are what you earing, listening, viewing, doing. (Of course numeric cannot be avoid for all the things, but should be for at least pleasure tasks, music, video, photo, pictures, etc...)
Well, Give this message to the most people in the world!
PS: A common mistake by audiophile is to put digital sources over analog gears. The emotionnal feelings is improoved by the analog gears of course, but they wrong the first emotional emitter in a chain is the source!!! In fact it's more emotional to put a vinyl over a digital amplifier than the reverse, things that quite a lot of people are doing now unfortunately!
PS2: Removed the precision of the cd, because i've forgotten (numerical precision is just bullshit in audio, video, pictures, etc). For example in audio you need to have 2 measure a one FQ for one T and 44.1Khz samplng involve just 22050 measure at 1 Hz and 0 measure at 22050Khz 🤣 , no serious the CD🙃.
Question of many oriented particle on the cassette at 22.050khz, responce a lot since it can well up than 22.050khz👍
PS3: I correct a mistake done somewhere i wrote that 2.5khz were correctly reproduced at 44100khz.
I was enthousiast. The 2.5khz sinus is well aliased. it look like not to much aliased for me around 120Hz.
Do the test by yourselft how? simple expression evaluator, when the sinus is not to aliased you get the real bandwidth (not to distorded bandwidth) reproduction of 44100 which i can assure you is ridiculous!
And try 22,049, it's not aliasing it's haching!!!
PS4: I correct again too much enthousiast! The stable bandwidth of 160hz for 44100hz samplig was defined by my eyes, but according some informations of a good friend, the eyes should not see a good audio signal representation! I confirmed it with a test of the representation of 1Hz at 192000Khz sampling, which effectively cannot be seen on a period! That should be the same for 22049! I'm now not afraid to tell this but numeric does not worth anything! It was born for video game music, and should have stay in this range! People who thinks that they could produce quality with this technology are just good for some research about the signal processing/and or school! The best card whose are doing DSD512 aren't able to have a non watchable period at 22049Hz! So anything below this is even badder! Unless you finish your works on a tape, or have the way to works at at better DSD rate, you will be making lower quality than a full analog chain! So people, avoid use any digital gears if you can of course and finish on a 15IPS tape, as long as better dacs, are available, but you should not wait for them, the pro audio softawre would have too much constraint for real time works with these datarate!
Dont' believe play by yourself with an expression evaluator!!!
I will finish this this anecdot:
Yesterday the aids people who take care of my end life, came to me and while demonstrating the sound of the tape, He told me that some days ago a daugther have bought a vinyl turntable to it's grand mother with a tino rossi record! And he saw a big smile on her face while working the vinyl on the turntable for her all the afternoon because she cannot stop hearing it again and again on analog support! Shame that he forgotten that a vinyl has two sides! But the grandma as spoken to teach him again!
The elders have spoken, and theirs words will stay engraved for eternity in the stone of knowlegde, and the head of the people whose aren't deaf for generations!

Of course, you're right having a tube preamp before a solid state is a pinacle on HIFI reproduction. Precision isn't the worlds of HIFI, nor video reproduction, emotions comes from unprecision. Also how can you even compare the light speed of the bulb to electrical transistor speed, they wins by a large amount. That's why numeric sound cold and if you know and i'm sure of this, the more you sample, the less precise is the sound, Why ? CQFD, Enjoy, Next step the tube power amplifier...
Ps: You don't need the pincacle of tube pre-amps/amps to already gets a clear sounds change in your listening experience, but if you can, don't hold yourself. I'm also looking for an affortable good bulb pré-amp...
