It’s late at night and I haven’t watched this video yet so I’m commenting so I can remember to check back tomorrow and watch this video. Quick little disclaimer about me: I LOVE Mickey Mouse so much. Something about this little rodent makes me smile. I collect some things about him but there’s so much Mickey stuff in the world, I mainly collect Oswald the Lucky Rabbit stuff. My grandma made me a Mickey Mouse pillow case and I carry the pillow with me every trip I go on. I always go to school with a Mickey Mouse shirt on to. Mickey as a character to me is so fascinating because of his history and to me he is such a fun loveable character if you actually watch his shows and movies and not just Mickey Mouse clubhouse. I love making alternate universes and one is actually how Mickey is coping in life being the mascot of a large basically corrupted company. I wish others would see Mickey and not just a mascot and as a character like I do. I also adore Oswald he is also my idol. Anything Oswald I see at the parks or at shop Disney I will buy it! Mickey and Oswald are literally my idols, friends, and comfort characters. I’m going to check back on this video tomorrow and see what it’s all about because it seems so interesting! It’s late though and it’s kind of a long video so you bet I’m going to save this and come back later :)
I appreciate it thank you! I remember back in early 2010's Oswald was EVERYWHERE. He had as much merch as Donald and Goofy. It's because of Epic Mickey of course, but like, a decade later, it's shocking that we went from 100 to 0. He went from on par with Mickey at best sporadic cameos. I do appreciate how this comment section is showing me that I'm not alone. Mickey is a fun character outside of just Disney's soulless puppet, and people should be able to appreciate him for that
Oswald is more of a friend to Woody Woodpecker he met him more than Mickey Mouse and the only Disney character me met prior to Disney's Trade of him was Pete well... Bear Pete (Also known as Putrid Pete or Bootleg Pete)
@@StripeTheSquid I finished watching the video and omg are you underrated! I enjoyed seeing every Mickey and Friends film mentioned and it encouraged me to go back and watch them! Mickey and the Three Musketeers was my favorite! I found out who Oswald was when I was younger. It was my birthday back in 2015 and my family took me across America (since we are closer to DisneyWorld) to DisneyLand. I had no idea who Oswald was but when we were in California adventure and Oswald was meeting up in the front, my mom had asked if I wanted to meet him. When I did, the first hug with him just kind of changed my life and I don’t know how. Now and days I rarely see Oswald merch unless it’s for a high price on EBay. I jump up and down whenever I see him on something (like on the kids menu in 1923 on the Disney Wish cruise. I was embarrassed to ask for a kids menu just because it had Oswald on it lol. I got to keep the menu though!) Ever since then I had a hobby of researching not just Oswald, but Disney and its history. Hopefully with Epic Mickey rebrushed there will be more of him. Like a Funko Pop in target or something lol I wish people wouldn’t just look at Mickey as a soulless mascot. He has so much character into him besides a perfect, happy all the time flawless character. My dream is to someday make a cartoon series or movie of my own that will inspire people and have great comfort characters just like Mickey and Oswald are to me! I wish I could make a Mickey movie myself especially it being official but the odds of that are most likely not gonna happen lol. I’ve always told my friends I wanted to be a director/producer for a movie and every movie I watch or see a review on RUclips, I take notes about what makes the audience love the movie and what does the audience dislike about it. I also point out my own opinions on it and strong notes that the movie has. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to where I want to be for now it’s a great hobby and just seeing these characters mentioned or on screen is something that makes me smile every time! Also you just gained a new sub :D
@@JaxCoolKartunes I knew Oswald was in Woody the Woodpecker but I never really mention his time with him. His designs were weird and questionable for me. Honestly, I personally never liked Woody the Woodpecker. His iconic laugh and personality was just annoying for me and I never find his films interesting. It’s either too much or too boring lol. Just my opinion. I still like to think Mickey and Oswald still talk considering they’re now canonically in the same world now. Maybe someday we can get a sibling reunion :) For now I’ll stick to Epic Mickey and the drawing of Mickey and Oswald together in Mickeys room at Magic Kingdom where you can meet him (It’s literally so adorable how mickey has a drawing of them together in his room)
@@Kaylee_Creates Really cute story about Oswald, we all got that one character where wish to collect EVERY piece of merch for. Wish you luck in making a series as well. I don't think Mickey will every been seen as a soulless corporate entity unfortunately. Most people who think this are adults, and everyone knows Mickey at this point. Watching a series of a character they think is boring is gonna be a hard sell for these people.
I hate to sound negative, but do you ever think Mickey getting angry is out-of-character for him? I only ask because of when he kicked Pluto out of the house in “Mickey’s Twice Upon A Christmas” and the way he and Donald made scary angry faces at the number 10 in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episode “Mickey’s Round Up”.
If it's for something major, he can get angry and it's fine, Pluto destroying his house for example makes sense why he'd get mad. He may be a happy guy, but that doesn't mean he can't have other emotions
In Mickey Mouse Works for instance, one of Mickey’s best moments is when he snapped after the hell Daisy put him and Minnie through on their drive (I forgot the short’s name). Similar to Donald, some of Mickey’s finest moments are when he has such clear emotions and isn’t just his usual happy go lucky self.
@@lelandatkinson5740 I don't remember the name either but I do recall the short. Yeah that’s a good example, Mickey needs to be pushed to be angry, and that was an entire day of him being pestered
@@litestonelgbt It wasn't even an honorable mention for my top 35 Disney shows and I don't regret that decision. It's not bad but it's nothing special.
Mickey also appears in horror games like Five Nights at Treasure Island and other FNAF Fan Games. I'm also surprised that you did not use Mickey Mouse from South Park.
It's always so weird that I sorta always thought of Mickey as the "main character" of Disney, in a sense, yet he's got such a lack of popularity right now compared to others born originally from the same minds. Feels like a waste. He seems to command a net zero nostalgia right now. Really wild.
Occasional things pop up. House of Mouse, 3 Musketeers, Clubhouse, but it's more so the idea of them. People like HoM for the crossovers, but not the show itself. 3 Musketeers is a bit better, people like the dynamic the main 3 have and Pete being at his most villainous, but is at best a cult classic. Clubhouse is just "huh I watched that as a kid" and memeing on Mortimer Mouse that's it it's a fleeting thought. A lot of the genuine fanbases for Disney properties are things like Marvel and Star Wars, which are mostly disconnected from the company, and the animated shows, which Disney tends to ignore and most fans of tend to resent the company. Mickey himself doesn't have an active fanbase, nor do the actual movies outside of the REALLY big ones like Frozen and Lion king. With Mickey as the face, that apathy or resentment is directed to him.
An interesting take on the retrospective of Mickey. Though if I had one critique, I kinda wish your narration was a bit more clear. I had some difficulties understanding exactly what you were saying. The Pete counter alert also drowned it out a number of times. For me, Mickey Mouse was always an iconic character, that’s coming from an ironic sentiment. He was reportedly among the first fictional characters I recognized in my youth - to the point where whenever I saw anything remotely similar in shape or formation of his iconic silhouette (including a trio of jet fighters flying overhead), I would immediately identify it as “Mickey Mouse”. It’s interesting that you only covered the media appearances of the ‘90s onwards since I would argue that Mickey’s search for relevance started much earlier. WWII was probably the first time the character found himself getting shoved out of the limelight. This was deliberate since Walt apparently didn’t want the character to be associated with the war effort and all the other edgy screwball cartoon characters that populated the cinemas at the time, but it kinda ended up hurting his media presence as a result, leaving Donald and Goofy to become more prominent stars. It wouldn’t be until the ‘50s when Disneyland (both the theme-park and the TV series) and “The Mickey Mouse Club” made the character somewhat relevant again - though even that was short lived once the ‘60s-‘70s rolled around. I know your take on the "Rescue Rangers" film wasn’t too favorable, but honestly, I thought it was a riot. It’s easily the most experimental film Disney has released in this decade par none, and it was really apparent that the people helming the film were animation buffs themselves. And while it would be naive to say it rivals “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, I would argue that it’s the closest film we’ve gotten to matching its wit and cleverness so far (“Looney Tunes Back in Action” was alright but incredibly flawed). And while Sweet Pete’s resemblance to the real Bobby Driscoll was unfortunate, it apparently wasn’t intended since originally, they had another character in mind for the role, but they went with Peter Pan since Disney already had the rights. It’s a pity that Disney had to extend the copyrights of Mickey for that long. Had they let the character expire back in 2004, we probably would’ve seen more creative usage of the character compared to today.
Yeah speaking is hard for me, hence the joke about people not understanding me like Donald in the Quack Pack segment, but someone else in this comment section has suggested some tips to improve. It's just hard because that's just kinda who I am, hard to change your voice. Oh obviously he's been relevant for longer, but I wanted to look at modern reboots only, like I did for Hanna Barbara last year. See how the renovated Mickey as a character and series. If I included EVERYTHING, well, this video would be even more ungodly long. As I said, I still highly recommend it. It's awful, but it's hilarious, and I love how experimental is, even if it's really really bad. I am aware Sweet Pete was a coincidence (it was originally Charlie Brown, but they couldn't get the license, and then Pluto, but Disney was too protective) and it makes sense as a concept (the boy who can't grow up had to grow up), but it's a well known story and Disney is a huge company, you'd think one person would question it
@@StripeTheSquid It would be interesting to have a follow-up or a brief rundown of some of the more notable attempts at reviving Mickey due to his new public domain status. Yeah, a lot of it is lazy, slap-dashed horror games and movies, but there have been at least a few unique attempts at adapting the character. Probably the strangest and most funniest example is how Mickey is now a real character in Erik Larsen’s “Savage Dragon” by Image Comics.
Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers is not at all a masterpiece, but I still really liked it. Only parts that really bothered me were, as you mentioned, the choice to not have the cel-shaded charactered be fully 2D despite all of the fully 2D characters throughout the movie, and more importantly, Sweet Pete in general. Otherwise, I had a lot of fun with it, mainly because of everything else it did with the animation, and the non-Disney cameos.
I play up my hatred for that movie, but in a weird way, I loved it. It's such an insane fun movie that I was never bored once with it. Outside of Sweet Pete's uncomfortableness everything bad with the movie just makes it so much more fun
Best Mickey would probably be from the comics, like those by Floyd Gottfredson and Paul Murry. But of course those are from like, the 1930s to 1950s, not from the 90s and beyond...
@@StripeTheSquid Honestly, I thought even the later comics were still alright in that they at least put Mickey in interesting situations. He's a respectable character when he's allowed to be one at all, even if he might not be Disney's *best* character.

hi. I'm one of those rare breeds of unironic Mickey fans, and yeah i'm SICK of corporate jokes. I can't even talk about my comfort character without mfs going "ermm isn't he the evil greedyman who buys everything and ruined Star Wars??". I mean i made at least 3 AI Mickey covers and ALL of those videos have a corporate joke (it's at it's worse in the most popular one, Die In A Fire where half of the comments are corporate jokes) tangent aside i'm really hoping Epic Mickey Rebrushed does well and ACTUALLY reignites some love into old Mick (and Oswald, but pretty sure everyone ̶in̶c̶l̶u̶d̶i̶n̶g ̶m̶e, ̶h̶e'̶s ̶m̶y ̶f̶a̶v̶o̶u̶r̶i̶t̶e ̶d̶i̶s̶n̶e̶y ̶c̶h̶a̶r̶a̶c̶t̶e̶r ̶f̶o̶r ̶g̶o̶d̶s ̶s̶a̶k̶e loves him)
My question is why doesn't this happen to any other mascot? Mario, Spongebob, Bugs, Sonic, it's the same joke of "cute iconic character but a greedy corporate overlord" but it's ONLY Mickey. It's been going on for decades, and it just simply isn't funny anymore. Every adult cartoon, every political cartoon, every comedy youtuber and every Disney animated parody makes the same joke. It's white noise at best now. The original Epic Mickey is peak nostalgia era right now. If Disney pushes this game hard, they could reignite Mickey's love. Oswald in particular I'd love to see more of, he's ridiculously underused despite being a fairly popular character

Like a Funko Pop in target or something lol
I wish people wouldn’t just look at Mickey as a soulless mascot.
Maybe someday we can get a sibling reunion :)
For now I’ll stick to Epic Mickey and the drawing of Mickey and Oswald together in Mickeys room at Magic Kingdom where you can meet him (It’s literally so adorable how mickey has a drawing of them together in his room)
@@StripeTheSquidWhereas Donald can easily blow his stack at the drop of a hat (as said by Mickey in “Split Decision”)

have you not heard that epic mickey is getting a remake?
No I heard, I just didn't bring it up since it's not out yet
Ducktales 2017 has a Gummi Bears episode which makes it peak

The Gremlins are actually just characters made by the Royal Air Force
They were gonna get a film though
Hang on, what's the BGM at 29:46?
The music throughout the whole Three Caballeros segment is "The Amazon" from Ducktales Remastered
@@StripeTheSquid Thank you! It sounded so familiar but I just couldn't place the name
Mickey also appears in horror games like Five Nights at Treasure Island and other FNAF Fan Games. I'm also surprised that you did not use Mickey Mouse from South Park.
I only looked at official interpretations
22:51 Nope. 'Twas Julius the Cat.
This was a surprisingly interesting video to me 🙌
Thank you!
@@geoffreyrichards6079 Not against it, but a year should probably pass so the dust fully settles and these things can come out
LETS GETS DANGEROUS
Outside of Sweet Pete's uncomfortableness everything bad with the movie just makes it so much more fun
i thought the movie sucked
Best Mickey would probably be from the comics, like those by Floyd Gottfredson and Paul Murry. But of course those are from like, the 1930s to 1950s, not from the 90s and beyond...
Someone else brought these up too, I like those comments a lot, but yeah, I wanna focus on 90's and after since I wanted to look at modern takes

I mean i made at least 3 AI Mickey covers and ALL of those videos have a corporate joke (it's at it's worse in the most popular one, Die In A Fire where half of the comments are corporate jokes)
tangent aside i'm really hoping Epic Mickey Rebrushed does well and ACTUALLY reignites some love into old Mick (and Oswald, but pretty sure everyone ̶in̶c̶l̶u̶d̶i̶n̶g ̶m̶e, ̶h̶e'̶s ̶m̶y ̶f̶a̶v̶o̶u̶r̶i̶t̶e ̶d̶i̶s̶n̶e̶y ̶c̶h̶a̶r̶a̶c̶t̶e̶r ̶f̶o̶r ̶g̶o̶d̶s ̶s̶a̶k̶e loves him)
My question is why doesn't this happen to any other mascot?
@@StripeTheSquid pretty sure Mario gets those types of jokes too. But they're so few and far between that you CAN unironically love Mario without being judged

As someone who also still struggles with this, I gently recommend working on enunciation for these. Your words slur together a lot and it makes a very interesting video very hard to parse.
Yeah.
I know it's a problem, and I try to work on it, but it's just really hard, and I'm not entirely sure how to improve it. You said you struggle with it too, do you got any tips?
@@StripeTheSquid I do most of my stuff off-camera, purely voice over, so I found that it actually helped a bit to look into tutorials on voice acting. Usually enunciating is something I have to consciously remind myself to do, so if there’s ever anything you’re saying off-camera I’d do that, and for stuff that’s ON camera I suppose just practice enunciation of the script before filming/takes.
