Dude I remember watching this movie in real time in 1983. I was 13 years old at time. Recall seeing fellow classmate at that screening at local mall. I was scared to death of that dog. I recall seeing fellow classmate a day or so later at first day of class of 7th grade in school yard. We were lining up to enter grade school. She and I talked about that movie when we first seen each other. Her name was Janine. Just memories.......

Forgetting the actual process of writing the book - which was years later than this story - and forgetting where you came up with the story are different things.
