      not really... stock for stock 2JZ is weak sauce. its only upside is it's got a stout block that can hold a lot of power. any new 300+ engine will out perform it while using half the gas. 2JZ can make crazy HP reliably, but not without a lot of money.

      They’re unreliable cars?

    • @npaul4171
      @npaul4171 6 лет назад +8

      @@aidenp5768 Someone will correct me if I've got any of this wrong, but the answer is, 'it depends.' When done right, they can be some of the most reliable high-horsepower modified cars available; when done cheaply, they are ticking time bombs. The EJ257 in the (US) WRX STI, and the EJ255 formally in the WRX, have several limits in the modification path. Some are easier to remedy, such as replacing the OEM oil pickup with a more robust aftermarket design, using an oil + change interval that capable of ensuring the oil stays within grade (major concern in this instance), and changing the fuel maps when modifying airflow characteristics. However, a significant limitation is with the pistons due to the nature (i.e., the price) of replacing the factory hypereutectic pistons (with something forged.) Essentially, the outer portion of a piston can fracture during a detonation, effectively destroying the engine, and the concern increases as the car is increasingly modified. Both engines are capable of making big power very, very reliably, but it's not as cost-effective as some other routes because this often entails a fully-built short block, nor is it as cost-effective as doing so with a Japanese-spec STI with an EJ207 engine that has stock internals capable of reliably handling significantly more power than the EJ255/257 (the EJ207's robustness is arguably more comparable to something like the 4G63 or SR20DET, in addition to its displacement). These engines require greater user knowledge to operate reliably than most other engines, and anyone considering one should arguably understand the pros/cons before committing, IMHO. Stock they are generally very reliable with competent care (with some exceptions, but this applies to all engines to some extent.) The drivetrain holds up very well to dramatically increased levels of power.
      Reputation management has not helped here. Subaru's response to piston failures was really sub-par IMHO - for reasons I do not know, they did not revise the piston material until 2019, and some owners who experienced failures reported warranty horror stories, although the unknown factor is what percentage of owners experienced this for absolutely no fault of their own versus what percentage largely induced the issue by their own behavior (i.e., neglect, ignorance, or bad decision-making.) Subaru of America has, arguably and ironically, likely made the reputation for these engines worse by advocating an oil that is poorly-suited for these engines, and some individual dealers have even made it worse by telling many buyers that the engines can do the same long drain intervals that many NA Subarus run (they absolutely cannot.) This has, in sum, left the engine with a bad reputation.
      The current WRX uses a newer generation engine, the FA20DIT, and FA/FB engines are progressively replacing the older EJs. It's still too new to speak about extremely long-term reliability trends, and this engine's limitation appears to be the connecting rods. Owners modifying up to 300 AWHP on stock internals have, for the most part, reported good results thus far.

      @@aidenp5768 it really is "it depends" I own a stock STi, low milage at 80k km but never skipped a beat. some people blow the engine in the first 10k. some people are pushing 500+hp and 200k+ miles and is still reliable. They're fragile, you just have to know how to drive it and you HAVE TO do maintenance, and NEVER late doing it, then it will be reliable. and if you're building it, it has to be built 100% correctly and with a 150% solid tune, or it'll blow.
      Other engines like the 2JZ, you can drive it however stupid you want, forget to change the oil a few times, have a shade tree guy build your engine in his backyard and tune it with a cereal box and it still won't crap out on you.
