Hii. Weird question but I'm gonna hopefully be moving into Durham in a few weeks and had a qs about the exam structure for courses. I've heard of formative & summative assignments and know that the latter contribute to your grade while the former don't, but I'm wondering where the end of year exams come into the picture then? Do the exams in the summer combine with summative assignments to make your grade in each module, or is there some other system? I just can't get my head around the assessment system so was hoping for some clarity if possible? Thanks!
hey, it's totally not a weird question. exams are a form summatives can take. it depends on the module, but some will have essay-style summatives, while others will have exams. i've even had a few classes where we've had exams and summatives to make up our final mark! hope that makes sense xx

So just one last qs, if you're in a course with summatives and/or a mix of exams and summatives, would the summatives be done throughout the year and then the exams during the summer, or are all summatives, exams etc usually conducted during the 'summer exam period'?
you're so welcome! for undergrad students, exams usually fall in the spring-summer (like april-june) so you have grades back to know whether you're progressing to the next year/graduating. in my experience, essay summatives are usually handed in in january and april (but this really depends on the course as well). you can also do resits for exams and rewrite assignments if you've really not done well, and these are usually done in july/august.
