  • The year is 2004. Donkey Kong is dead. Let's take a look back and see how a children's song of all things took one of gaming's strongest series for a decade and torpedoed its credibility with the worst first impression the series could've given after its parent company lost custody of it: Donkey Konga.

A lot of Nintendo games are SUITABLE for kids, which naturally leads to a lot of children playing them, but they're not like "Race with Ryan" which has no audience above the age of 4

The buyout era was hit or miss, but at least Nintendo was taking shots at all, and when a game hit, fans would be treated to good gameplay, the franchise's identity being well represented, or both. Great job covering this strange title. It should also be noted that the Donkey Konga series is basically just Namco's Taiko no Tatsujin but with a DK coat of paint. Funny enough, the game was actually popular over in Japan, to the point that there was a third entry over there and interestingly, each game's regional release had different songs to play to. (Imagine having DK drum along to Shonen anime intro themes from series like Naruto and Dragon Ball, because it happened.) Personally, I think the games might have done a LITTLE better if they all had ACTUAL DONKEY KONG MUSIC to drum to. The series is beloved for it's fantastic soundtracks so the fact they made 2 to 3 games all about drumming to songs and the ONLY tune tied to the series was the Smash Bros remix of the DK Rap felt extremely... awkward to put it politely.

      Yeah simple things. But it did well where it mattered most i suppose. I also don't like the notion that DK was only swinging misses before Returns. Jungle Beat is one of my favorite gamecube games, I actually think Barrel Blast is awesome and definitely deserves another go as well as the characters introduced there being used more whenever Kremlings make a comeback. And the King of swing/jungle climber titles are WEIRD but pretty fun small spin off times admittedly. Granted, i was born a few years too late to experience Rare and DKC mania live in the 90's, but colorful mascot platformers in general were kinda getting dethroned in general gamers opinions anyway at the time. But as a 98 kid growing up during this DK "dark age" what we got was definitely good stuff in my eyes and enough to make me love the ape and his crew

    This decade was so frustrating for DK/Rare fans, so many cool 3D action adventure games were coming out across all platforms and DK kept getting saddled with weird bongo spinoffs.
    I played the heck out of the Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter trilogies in the 2000s, and in retrospect, a lot of the ideas in those games and Super Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker would have made perfect sense for Donkey Kong.

  • @MerelyAFan
    @MerelyAFan Год назад +4

    The most damning indictment of DK's direction in the 2000s was that the best selling title of the franchise in that decade was the DKC1 remake on GBA. Essentially a port of a decade old SNES game made by a studio owned by the Nintendo's competitor was still more attractive to mass audiences than all the weird experiments that were being attempted on home consoles. While we'll never know what the internal discussions really were about what to do with IP, I like to believe it was Rare's success with the Country trilogy remakes that eventually convinced the company to get Retro for DKC Returns. For all of NoJ's successes, understanding Donkey Kong's appeal in the West was something they seemed to struggle with.

    Which gives me a bit of hope that things might change, and that god forbid they might actually remember that people liked the iterations the RPGs made on existing Mario species and how beloved they are with the fans, like they did with the old Rare cast even as they added new elements...
    ...Tho I am then swiftly saddened by also remembering that situation with the "Mario Mandates" or whatever you want to call the pretty visible mandated crushing of anything too "off brand" in the Mario series also resembles what happened to Mickey Mouse in the 90s, and lord knows how long it took before they let Paul Rudish & crew make him interesting again.
    And yes I am aware of the irony of the guy who headed up DKC's glorious revival also headlining the downfall of the Paper Mario series, though how much of the latter is his fault is... unclear.

      Then 2002 hit and it's never really washed away the stigma of the Nintendo fanbase turning hard on DK as a whole that the Country games eventually shook off. For context, people were calling DKC2 a bad game in 2004! DK64 had a comparable impossible mountain to climb that it's still recovering from today, even if it is... I mean I don't love it but I certainly don't think it's overall bad!

    I thought Donkey Kong had gone the way of Sonic. And to be fair, I'm still not completely sure that the series has recovered. At least Sonic has Sonic Mania! Is Tropical Freeze as good as Sonic Mania, when comparing them to their original trilogies?

    • @DesigningFor
      @DesigningFor  Год назад +2

      Many would say that Tropical Freeze is the best DK game ever made. I don't quite agree, the little differences its controls and momentum has compared to the original trilogy I'm not a fan of, but I do think it's a great game and is properly comparable to Mania, if a bit dilluted due to coming out on the Wii U first. Returns is similarly great... when you get past the forced motion controls for rolling that does hurt the game a bit when it doesn't register correctly.
      I will defend Jungle Beat, though! That game was good, just horribly marketed!

      @@DesigningFor I felt like DKC:Returns was more of a Sonic Generations more than a Sonic Mania. I might end up feeling the same way about Tropical Freeze if the differences in momentum are noticeable.
      What made Sonic Mania great for me is that they nailed the physics that made the original trilogy so great.
      I was a victim to the Jungle Beat marketing as a kid. That, and I couldn't afford a game with a fancy controller back then...I was lucky enough to have the GC itself! At least, I'm assuming you need the Bongos for Jungle Beat...
      Is there any way to play those games "properly" today without buying a set of those bongos online?

    • @DesigningFor
      @DesigningFor  Год назад +1

      @@BabusGameRoom There is a "New Play Control" version of Jungle Beat available for Wii, but personally I feel that it misses a lot of what made JB special in the translation. Jungle Beat is as close to a rhythm-platformer as you're gonna get in its original form, the Wii version traditionalizes it a bit, and while it's still good, I do think the intensely inaccessible original version is the way to go. Plus it wouldn't feel right if your hands didn't hurt horribly from clapping afterward!

    Incel gamerboys didn't get Donkey Konga. I get that. We all do. But it is revisionist history to say it killed DK for a generation. The idiotic decision by Nintendo to rip DK Bongos support for DK Bongo Blast (aka DK Barrell Blast) for the Wii made that 2007 game unlikeable and unplayable. That did far more damage than a game (actually 3) that you incels didn't like.

      ... but I like Donkey Konga. Are you doing alright? Do you need a hug? Because it sounds like your hatred of a game that you don't even know the title of and inability to read any print media from the time is really upsetting you. It's ok, I'm here if you need to talk.
