    1:11 Here we see the traditional "Wave Motion" effect that is standard with most Japanese armaments, which fires an extremely powerful beam forward from the weapon, capable of inducing extreme collateral damage, in this case, taking out the entire side of the building that the rifleman's target dared to cower behind.

  • @elgooso9645
    @elgooso9645 7 лет назад +205

    Great video like usual. However the Japanese removing the dust covers from the weapon is a myth. It stems from US Marines taking the weapons back as trophies in WW2. The Navy would take the bolt out of the weapon so they didn't have more live weapons floating around and the dust covers would fall off of the bolt when not in the weapon. The Japanese would never ditch the dust covers because the weapon was a tribute to their devotion to the Emperor and they wanted to keep them in prestige condition.(I'm not trying to be toxic just thought you would want to know)

      @@Kenton_Stills They seem to have been following the trend of bigger bullets and more power = better. Logistically, it was a bad move. Im personally torn on the subject because on one hand, I can add 2 Japanese rifles to my collection, but on the other hand, I need to find and buy 2 expensive military surplus rifles. LOL. But hopefully I can find some sporters that I can restore with parts bought online, as is my hobby. I like saving old military guns from Bubba.

    • @theweditor3612

      @@Kenton_Stills The type 38 wasn’t performing well in china, it had little stopping power, but they observed that the type 92 mounted machine gun which was chambered in 7.7 seemed to stop the chinese soldiers a lot better. So they decided logistically to change all their main weapons to 7.7 (standardize ammunition). However they gained new enemies and thus the type 38 remained in service and kept being produced, as they couldnt completely replace the rifle due to production lacking in speed. They still had old type 38’s produced in the interwar years along with lots of ammunition. The type 38 kept being used because not using it would have made equipping soldiers harder. It wasnt uncommon to see different squads in a company each carrying different sets of rifles. This did indeed however created a logistical nightmare having a deemed obsolete ammo and weapons still being used everywhere (the type 96 and type 11 lmg’s were still in use as well).

      They foolishly went to 7.7 while keeping 6.5 because they thought they were missing out on long range 2 mile shots. They were jealous of the Chinese 8mm trash mausers and there was a silly myth that the big bullets were more lethal. They were only more lethal at long sniper distances

    one very important thing to remember about the 6.5mm arisaka round is that the smaller size of the bullet made it horribly damaging to flesh, as it caused cavitation as it tumbled through the body

      @@billmelater6470 That is indeed how it works, it's why the Americans use 5.56 and not 7.62 - it shreds organs while larger rounds just fly through.

    • @austingerner-rose697
      @austingerner-rose697 4 года назад +11

      @@Fr_87 You're kinda right. We use 5.56 because you can carry far more of it than 7.62, less recoil and because it does work fine within the ranges combat often takes place (however our military is looking at larger calibers right now).
      I'm really not sure if 6.5 Arisaka would tumble, as 6.5 usually has a longer/larger core density and it being a heavier/slower bullet than 55 grain 5.56 I think it would just punch through, maybe fragment.

    • @shockwave6213
      @shockwave6213 4 года назад +9

      A long 6.5mm bullet will tumble and yaw to cause massive cavitation. The Austro-Hungarian Empire protested the use of Italian "Pencil bullets" from their Carcano rifles due to the "Explosive effect" it had on the body.
      JFK took a 6.5mm bullet and his head popped like a melon. Had it been a 30-06 bullet or similar spitzer type bullet, it would have taken the top of his skull off but with much less explosive force, as those bullets pass through a target rather cleanly.

Also, the SMLE has 10 bullets in the mag, compared to the Martini's 1 bullet - so the Martini is sluggish compared to the SMLE, and when using infantry rifles, that's a downside for the Martini. The dust covers got lost when the Navy started bringing back captured examples, since the dust cover is attached to the bolt, when the bolts were removed for safety reasons the dust covers usually got lost or thrown away.

    Would recommend watching C&Rsenal's video on the Type 38. There doesn't seem to be any evidence that the Japanese soldiers got rid of their bolt covers. For them, the rifle was a tool that was to be respected and cared for. Plus, removing the cover could get them in trouble.

    I think this is the best all-around rifle in the scout class, I’m loving it for a slightly more run and gun “aggressive” style in TDM games, since that’s all I play and make gameplay commentary vids on. Normally I’d grab the SMLE and post up somewhere but with this thing I can run around as if I have something like the RSC for the medic class. This shit is an addictive gun once you get used to it. I find I just use it on every single TDM map. You do have to be good and fast with transitioning to your side arm though. I guess the next update will have a scoped version, not sure I’ll like that or not. Iron sights seem to fit for this “sweet spot” range.

      obviously bayonets are made to be thrusting weapons but you cant say battlefield is realistic. everybody just runs around the map like retards and there are 20 different experimental smgs in the game that were never really used in the war

      @arielvega6344 6 лет назад

      The guns are there to make the game more fun because if everyone is running around with bolt guns the game would probably tank. But maybe there was an range of realism that battlefield was going for while providing a unique and fun experience. Who knows? You'd have to ask Dice. I think the emphasis of CQC focused on the melee weapons that they worked so hard to bring a variety to us. If you could just bash the shit out of people with rifles there'd be no need for melee weapons.

    Though it's pretty ironic the Japanese then brought Carcanos to replace their Arisakas they sold, probably a much worse weapon.

    I don't think they really rattled and made that much noise in the actual war. That is just a myth created from post ww2 guys taking the dust covers off them for various reasons. (Some people tried to use create counterfeit Nazi rifles. I think they sometimes used Japanese rifles as parts to make them. The rifle does share a lot of similarities with the various mausers. (There was one mauser that had a dust cover too. The Japanese inventor improved the concept by letting the dust cover move with the bolt. The previous dust cover mauser model required you to move the dust cover out of the way so you can eject the bullets while firing)) When the dust cover is never removed it is very quite. It is until you have to remove the dust cover and put it back on is when it begins to rattle. I think this leads to the next myth. The Japanese soldiers never removed the dust covers. They left them on. People just think that because again.. so many Japanese ww2 rifles were messed around with where they rattled. That myth was created as a surmise by the post ww2 collectors explaining they were seeing so many loud rattling rifles.

    *Sees 6.5x50 as shown in the video* Oh look, a war crime.
    The bullet shown seems to be a soft tip hunting round, it is a war crime to use in combat. Not really a problem with the video, just me nit picking.

    • @YoChocolate
      @YoChocolate 7 лет назад +1

    • @KrisKrieg1
      @KrisKrieg1 7 лет назад +3

      I meant the photograph Kris used in the video of the cartridge when looking at the irl stats of the rifle. The picture used showed a jacketed soft tip, in game they are just solid lead projectiles. A solid lead bullet will expand, but it is not necessarily meant for expansion. A jacketed lead tipped bullet is *intended* for expansion in a target, which is indeed a war crime.
      -Hague Convention of 1899 (IV,3) "The Contracting Parties agree to abstain from the use of bullets which expand or flatten easily in the human body, such as bullets with a hard envelope which does not entirely cover the core, or is pierced with incisions."
      And here is the video time stamp 0:36
      Hope this clears things up.

    Japanese troops did not discard their dust covers.
    The dust cover has been on the Arisaka series of rifles since 1905; it predates World War 1. Yet all the myths and theories about Japanese soldiers discarding them seem to only take place during World War 2, in the mid-late 1940's, the Pacific Theater, Between the Japanese and Americans. No one ever seems to say, "during World War 1, most Japanese troops discarded their dust covers." No one has ever said, "during the Second Sino-Japanese War, most Japanese troops discarded their dust covers." I've never heard any of that; it's always: World War 2, Pacific Theater, battling the US troops.
    Am I the only here who finds that just a bit suspicious?

    Love the video, but you are wrong about the dust cover. It was apart of the weapon thus property of the Emperor, they wouldnt want to remove to avoid disrespecting the Emperor. It wouldn't have been loud either, the only time it rattles is when you cycle the bolt which is already loud. If youre wondering why a lot of copies dont have it, ethier US servicemen removed it due to the light rattling or they didnt understand its uses fully and captured models used by Indonesia and China lost them over time/heavy use.

    • @osamaismymama7907
      @osamaismymama7907 7 лет назад

      Michael Kassner Actually a lot of the dust covers where lost because when disassembling the bolt it is incredibly difficult to put the cover back on properly during a fight so a lot of soldiers basically said screw it

    • @rossjones6560
      @rossjones6560 7 лет назад +1

      I've heard a lot of soldiers removed the dust covers regardless, as the rattling noise would've compromised their position. Maybe this was late on (perhaps in WW2) though it's common to find type 38 without covers now for this reason
