    I like Bill's whinny to Lady at 5:09 - "Hey I thought we were a team here." Great Job Jim, and Lady and Bill seem to love to work together as a team. They were each a little anxious at first having to pull separate.

    I think Bill was rooting Lady on, at the 5:09 mark. And then at the 5:27 mark, Bill told Lady "Great Job"!!! Kudos to Abby for hanging in there filming all day. Great job and congratulations all around!!! Overall, I think Bill was having an easier time pulling the boat.

    Horse pulls and ox pulls were something I shared with my grandfather when I was young. He and I would pack a lunch and lawn chairs and head out, always having to be back in the late afternoon to milk the cows. Watching your horses pull reminds me of those summer days at fairs, sitting next to him and watching how each team performed, critiquing the teams, and always applauding the best teamster. Thanks for bringing back those memories from 65 years ago. Congratulations on your trophy, you really are the best.
    And your young lady doing the filming and commentary did a great job, too.

    Both horses did really well, you can be very happy with them. In Bavaria I also participated in a good number of single horse pulls, but we did them differently: Instead of letting the horses pull a maximum weight over a short distance, we restricted it to body weight in the first round, plus 25 % in the second, if necessary added another 10% in a third. The distance was 40 m, approximately 120 feet, so it was more of an endurance pull, resembling what is required in the field or forest at times.

    • @klauskarbaumer6302
      @klauskarbaumer6302 3 года назад +2

      I have to correct myself, 40 m is exactly 133.33 feet.

      Hello! Can mares pull as much as geldings or stallions? Or are they generally equal? Its a question Ive had for a while, thank you so much!

    • @klauskarbaumer6302
      @klauskarbaumer6302 Год назад +1

      @@pedrocarrillo3048 I have seen mare pull as much as geldings or stallions, but cannot say if that was based on individual ability. Usually the muscle mass on a horse defines the pulling power, and that maybe greater with stallions in general. Geldings are a different story, there it is dependent on when they were castrated. The earlier they were castrated, the less muscular they are by nature. Of course, with all horses, no matter what their gender is, training is very important .

    Your horses have a different kind of shine: deep good health and fitness all the way to the hair root. It doesn't come in a bottle like Showsheen. Trudy, you are going to have to start pulling. If the next generation doesn't pick it up, it will die. Your dad's horsemanship is very much on display. The horses have not wasted one iota of their energy on anything but the loads. Kudos to Lady. It takes courage to pull that second pull after getting snapped in the hocks with the single tree. I hope that didn't do damage. She is one dead honest mare, just like my little gal was. Those are worth their weight in gold. You almost get the sense that Bill is yelling "neener, neener, neener" after each pull. Just like my little gal, if you ask them to pull something, they will pull it, break the harness, or die trying. That is some real heart. Courage like that can bring me to tears, just sayin.

    Seeing videos of you and your teams at pulls shows the difference in giving horses a job vs strictly pulling them affects their attitudes. You have a quiet horse that is listening for instruction. It's sad that so many county and local fairs have stopped pulling because of runaway team incidences. You are always quiet with your team and it really shows. They walk away from the boat just as quiet as they approached. You certainly earned that teamster trophy!

    I have always LOVED watching these stone boat competitions. The true lion hearts of the horses come out and seeing them put everything they have into 'just doing their job' is sometimes breath taking. I could consider myself a bystander (been mildly around and owned horses). I guess the spirt of my father is still in me somewhat. I grew up around men who worked in the old bush camp days. But by the time I was growing, up the legends of the logging camps was dying out. Northwestern Ontario had winter logging camps that were horse powered up until the late 60's and old home movies of the draft horses pulling the winter sleighs and my mother riding one.
    As for running out of weights, I have seen it happen before. In the older days of our local farmers fair. The horses were on grass and it rained. So .... there wasn't enought concrete around. The last two teamsters didn't want to call a draw, so the more redneched of the rednecks jumped on the stone boat about 5 at a time. GREAT fun.
    The best teamster trophy. Regardless of the level your animals perform at, THAT is the trophy that means the most. In the old camp logging days, it was the barn boss that ruled the camp. And the men.

And watching their legs when that weight is taken off them, their legs must feel like they're walking on air after pulling so hard. It would be nice to see more young men and women at the horse pulls and such. I enjoy hearing romantic stories of couples celebrating 50 years of wedded bliss after meeting at a horse pull or a barn dance. That's how my aunt met her husband, may he rest in peace. He died a year ago this month after a long illness. They married around 1964. I wasn't at the wedding or the reception, being just a toddler, but I've heard the legendary story of how my aunt, in her wedding dress, got into a friendly argument with a guest at the reception who was bragging that his horse was faster than hers. She couldn't abide that kind of talk, so they had a horse race right there at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Apparently the guest had ridden his own horse to the wedding supper and had it tied up by the barn. And Aunt Sylvia didn't change into riding clothes. She raced her horse wearing her wedding dress. Uncle Ron never talked much, so I don't know what he thought of it, but he was devoted to his wife. They were a good team. May he rest in peace. P.S. Aunt Sylvia had bright red curly hair, and the horse's name was Blaze.

    I love these video's. Grew up in a tiny farming community and miss that life. You could see cattle and horses out half our school's windows :) I was going to pick a winner but couldnt help but notice the other comments so Im just going to enjoy watching now :)

    Great to see these two horses doing their "thing". I was wondering if they feel a bit sore in the muscles the next day given the heavy duty work out they just did. Extra Oats for sure. :-)
