The political journey of Bernie Sanders

  • Bernie Sanders seemed to come out of nowhere in 2015 when he announced that he would challenge Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, but he was soon drawing huge crowds nationwide. Although his campaign would ultimately fall short, his message of economic justice won him many supporters and changed the political conversation. In fact, it was the same message Sanders had been running on for decades. The self-described democratic socialist made national headlines in 1981 when he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vt., but he developed a reputation as a political pragmatist. As a congressman, and later as a senator, Sanders spent much of his career in Washington in the political wilderness, a champion of progressive causes in an era in which Democrats were moving to the center. In his second run for the Democratic nomination, Sanders is no longer alone on the left wing of the party, and critics wonder whether he has the ability to broaden his message and expand his base. This video is great, but I still find subtle mistruths throughout. They misrepresent Sanders' legislative background in Congress by showing how many Bill's he personally passed. He did the most legislative work by putting amendments (that spoke to his issues) on other bills that were all PASSED by Congress. This dubbed him the name "the amendment king". It's Bernie 2020 baby!!!

      Phillip Poggi I don’t mind bernie but he was dubbed the amendment king solely from an unusually high number of “roll call” amendments passed in an 8 year period of time. Given the vast lifetime and decades with a platform of power, I’d say that’s an incredibly cherry picked frame of time. Also, with so many decades in power, what’s the greatest accomplishment he has? Getting a little bit of money allocated towards some healthcare clinics? I mean with so many decades and different platforms of power, I can’t help but see even Elizabeth warren has greater accomplishments under her belt as just a Massachusetts college professor. For someone who’s running as a revolutionary, I can’t find a single one of his accomplishments that would be considered revolutionary. And before 2016, neither did literally any of the American public. His current notoriety has been the result of nothing more than HEAVY campaign marketing and rebranding techniques, generally to a young audience that isn’t able to see his lacking depth of involvement in US politics over the last several decades. While he’s remained ideologically consistent, which is great, he was really actually pretty complicit in the way government functioned until his 2016 presidential run, and never actually pushed himself or his platform to a substantive audience or piers. Those are unfortunately the qualities that define a fighter, and I think allot of people recognize that he absolutely remade his image in 2016.

      @lebowski5192 5 лет назад

      . Sure...riding other's coattails is a way to waddle through your Congressional career. Why didn't he champion any of his campaign ideas while in the Senate? Because NO ONE WOULD VOTE FOR THEM!

    • @mitchclark1532
      @mitchclark1532 5 лет назад +4

      @@lebowski5192 Actually, you're 100% wrong. Firstly, look at how he has already changed the elected Democratic Party. Many of them, especially those running for president, have adopted Medicare For All, Tuition-Free College and more of his ideas. House Democrats even recently passed a $15 minimum wage, which was unheard of before Sanders ran for president and sparked a movement.
      There is no Sanders Act because party leadership controls the floor, and leadership has always hated him and has always stood against what he has stood for. But one thing members of congress can do is go around leadership, go around committee, and shoehorn amendments into bills while they're on the floor, and they do it by roll call vote, meaning forcing other members to vote up or down. When you say "pass all the amendments you want", here's what those amendments are: They're Bernie Sanders going around the leadership and forcing members to vote on issues Bernie wanted them to vote on. And of course they generally voted for the stuff, because no one wants to be on record opposing popular ideas. That's how you get stuff done without selling out. That's what Bernie Sanders did. That's why they call him the Roll Call Amendment King. And that's why that shows his legislative effectiveness, even in the face of opposition from wealthy and powerful interests.
      By the way, that is a weird bar you've set for Sanders. Why aren't you chiding the other candidates for not having authored legislation? Because you're just using it as a cheap talking point against Bernie; that's why.
      And now, Sanders is still sticking his neck out there, proposing very bold progressive ideas that go further than everyone else's. But now it's different, because now he has a large, national grassroots movement behind him, and now has a shot at the presidency. You can see how effective he's been in congress when he puts his issues to an up-or-down vote. You can see how effective he has been in shifting the conversation and policy proposals to the left, mobilizing his movement and generating excitement around his policy ideas and pressuring Democrats to adopt them. Imagine how effective he'll be with executive power and the bully pulpit of the presidency.
      Bernie Sanders would be the most effective president in our lifetime, using not only legislative and executive power, but also using grassroots energy to put major pressure on the wealthy and powerful interests that do so much harm to so many people.That's what he means when he says he will be "organizer-in-chief". That's a great undertaking, but that's what serious progress requires, and only Bernie Sanders is anywhere near in position to deliver on such a promise.
      What's "ineffective" is passing legislation for the sake of passing legislation, patting yourself on the back, and then moving onto other issues while the problem gets worse and worse. What's "ineffective" is nominating weak corporate-friendly candidates like Hillary Clinton (or Joe Biden). The third-way triangulation of the "New Democrats" has caused abundantly more problems than it has purportedly solved, and its darling, Hillary Clinton, obviously couldn't even beat the least popular candidate in recorded history, Donald Trump. So tell me how "effective" the establishment's style of politics is. Tell me how "effective" establishment-aligned politicians are. Because the facts tell us the exact opposite.

It's non existent when in fact it is the most important aspect of ones dignity and self respect. Show me an individual who gets a pass on earning a living through individual motivation/desire and I'll show you an individual with entitlement issues that transcends there ability to get off the couch. Bernie represents a crowd that does not take inventory of there own decisions and take responsibility; rather points the finger outward towards those that had absolutely nothing to do with the situations they find themselves based on the decisions they made. Most people want to work hard (even if it's a struggle) and grow develop and climb the ladder as they go through there lives and obtain self respect and dignity raising a family or being able to take care of themselves. Dignity is spawned via individual responsibility win/loose or draw. The nation should not take Sander's and his supporters as the rule but rather the exception and outlier that should not drive the momentum of the country's sentiment.
