- What do the residents of Burlington, Vermont, the adopted hometown of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), think of him? The Democratic presidential candidate was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., but moved to Vermont in 1968 at the age of 27 and spent eight years as mayor of Burlington in the 1980s. Burlington shaped Sanders as Sanders shaped Burlington, so much so that it’s hard to consider one without the other.

Imagine Kurt Wright, the only Republican in the Burlington City Council, saying all good things about Bernie.
Republicans have been complimenting Bernie his entire career. Republicans gave Bernie all the credit for the passage of the 2013 bipartisan Veterans Bill. Bernie has always been widely complimented strongly on his job as mayor of Burlington by local republicans and doubters alike, in retrospect.
It should be noted that Vermont is a Red state made Blue only because Sanders caucuses with the Dems. Sanders is all about helping the little guy and hard working blue collar types (aka the Repub base). So it's not surprising at all that a Repub politician would support him. His real issue on the right is not having much of a reputation in Fly Over Country beyond what Fox reports on him. If he had the same relationship he has with Vermont voters, a lot of ruby red states would become purple if he lead the ticket.

Tom Riggle well he did establish what he promised in Burlington as mayor, and was elected 3 times int office with ever increasing support, making his enemies to support him. Those who tried to block his policies, were elected out of office by the his supporters, making the way free for him so he could make his promise to become true.
And that’s what he is going to do in the US as well, kicking all corrupt corporate politicians out of office democratically, to make the way free for his policies. That’s what he said 2016 and is saying 2020, his movement that brings this change has only grown, because people are fed up with America’s corruption.
I have lived in Vermont my entire life, I resided in Burlington while attending UVM. I have followed Bernie's political career since the early 1990's. I remember as a kid watching the local news and seeing Bernie get a bus and fill it with local senior citizens and take them up to Canada so they could get their prescription meds cheaper. Bernie has always been for the people, his message has not changed in over 30 years of politics. With Bernie, what you see is what you get. He is genuine. He has been a Vermont treasure for many years, and now I am glad that the rest of the country is getting to know him.
I'm sort of sorry now that you guys are gonna lose him to us for 4-8 years. But thanks for your service 😊

@@pooh44100 all I am saying is what I have seen. Bernie did in fact take buses loaded with seniors up to Canada so they could more easily afford their medications. I personally don't know of any other politician running for President that has done this. You can believe what you want, but I have seen the good that Bernie has done first hand, I have followed him closely for over 30 years. My mind is made up.

1. Bernie's credibility comes from his overwhelmingly consistent political record. He was marching with the civil rights movement in the 60's, fighting gentrifying housing developements in the 80's, standing up for marriage equality in the House of Representatives in the 90's when Bill Clinton was signing the Defense of Marriage Act, Hillary Clinton was on tv saying "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman.", and Elizabeth Warren was a card carrying Republican. He was also opposing the Iraq War in the senate, around the same time senators Biden and Clinton were voting for it.
2. What has he done as a senator?; He voted against the Iraq War, he introduced legislation to compel the president to re-enter diplomatic talks with Iran. He introduced legislation to finally allow the federal government to negotiate drug prices, and allow the goverment to buy drugs at much cheaper prices from Canada. He introduced a bill with Elizabeth Warren (who later withdrew her support) to give every single person in the country medicare, a bill that's so popular it has him winning the Democratic primary and, according to current polling, beating Donald Trump in Texas. A lot of what he's introduced hasn't passed; the same thing is true of every other Democrat in the senate. Unlike almost every other senator he isn't voting for things like increases to the already absurd military budget. This is likely why a recent poll found him to be the most popular senator in the federal government. Another thing to keep in mind, when he left Congress in 2007, after 16 years in office, he had more bills co-sponsered with Republicans that had actually passed than any Democrat. He's actually pretty damn good at working bi-partizanly.
3. What can support his ideas that he can achieve?: For starters, the fact that a new Reuter's-Ipsos poll found that 70% of Americans support medicare for all, the main focus of his platform.
4. What kind of source can he get?: I don't know what this question means.
5. What economic matters he has been done?: As mayor of Burlington, Bernie supported rent controlls on lower income areas and rejected developement proposals that would price people out of their neighbourhoods. As senator, he supported the Dodd-Frank amendment, which re-regulated Wall Street after tbe financial crash. Again, he's been working to lower people's healthcare costs for years, his platform would create an extensive federal jobs program to deal with unemployment, he's fought for a $15 mininum wage for years, he's marched with striking unions, his medicare-for-all would give unions more power since they would no longer need to negotiate for healthcare, etc. Hell, he managed to actually pressure the largest corporation in the country, Amazon, to give its workers a $15 minimum wage.
I'm Your President ‘left wing’ well yes, but a lot of American ‘left’ wing media has a vendetta against Bernie the same way much of the DNC do, for surely totally not corrupt reasons..

People may be shocked to know he has 3 houses, but if you were to actually go and look at his 3 houses you will see they are very plain. They are houses most 80 year olds have, nothing fancy just typical family homes. Even his third house which is his "fancy" house is kind of ugly and most of it's value comes from the land. The only reason he was able to get his third house was because he sold a damn book. That is probably the most "friendly" way to become a millionaire.
Calling out Bernie for being a millionaire (for selling a book) would be like calling out Anne Frank for being a millionaire had she survived and published her Diary.

When Bernie was mayor he studied civil engineering and meticulously focused on details for drainage, and sewage systems when it rains in Burlington you can't find a puddle on the roads because Bernie wrote the rule book for the DPW and City Planning Commission.

He's done more to fight for rights for people affected by those very overlaps of oppression than you probably have. And he's not directly afflicted by those things, yet he still fights for us. Lgbt, women of color & single parent households, homeless people/families, previously incarcerated, previously or currently battling addiction, those fleeing domestically hostile environments, immigrants & refugees. It seeks to empower communities from literally every intersectional overlap. And that's just one, very comprehensive bill!
@I'm Your President oh, & it seeks to upgrade & expanding housing units for people with physical & mental disabilities, upgrade the current public water system to ensure cleaner water with less waste from the housing establishments that utilize the water. It calls to seek the halt of corporate /business related pollution of our water system. It calls for solar panel roofing & to ensure that any construction of such housing & additions or upgrades be contracted to union supporting businesses within the community to avoid OUTSOURCING! idk about you but I love this bill.

prohibit all contractors and subcontractors receiving grant funds from hiring employees through a temporary staffing agency unless the relevant State workforce agency certifies that temporary employees are necessary to address an acute, short-term labor demand;

require all contractors and subcontractors receiving grant funds to have an explicit neutrality policy on any issue involving the organization of employees of the contractor or subcontractor, and all contractors and subcontractors, for purposes of collective bargaining;

I've been to Burlington. Beautiful place and very laid back and distant from Trump and his worshipers. Bernie Sanders has been consistent for over 40 years, he deserves to be President and so do the people living in this country. #Bernie2020

I LOVE Burlington and ALWAYS stop there on the drive between Boston and Montreal. The Waterfront (which Bernie helped protect from being turned into a rich asshole playground) is an amazing public place and a great place to interact with the Vermont community

I'm a republican and dislike his policies, but he's been saying the same things from the 80s. It is nice to see politicians that are consistant.

There are a lot of Republicans who would agree with a lot of what he says, at least according to the polls where taxing the elites, M4A and stopping NAFTA and TPP ,putting money into infrastructure to give workers good quality work while at the same time making things run more efficiently are all popular with the right as well as the left. It's no longer a fight between the Left and the Right, it's a fight between the Up and the Down.

@@martam.5184 I'm 50 50. I can't see myself voting for a democrat because they emphasize their policies on gun control and sometimes banning "hate speech". However, Trump said "screw the due process" during an interview, and introduced a wealth tax in the early 2000s. It seems he wanted to be a president but not for what he believes in. I'm more of a Ted Cruz/Marco Rubio guy.

I was vacationing in Burlington about 10 years ago. I remember bumping into him by accident and apologized for not paying attention. Hard to believe an older man I almost knocked over would become a favorite for president. At the time I had never even known what Bernie looked like.

Bernie knows that the Canadian National Health Care System is what America deserves. You have got to get rid of the for profit idea in Health Care as it is your basic right above all others.
Most of the civilized world has a form of health care like Canada. The U.S. is nuts where people lose houses and go bankrupt over their health. Imagine how much cheaper it would be if you removed insurance companies from the system. They are just an expensive middle man raking in billions.
Bottom line is Canadians pay way less for health care and drugs then the U.S. The middle man (insurance companies) is the reason. Plus they buy everything in bulk.

To the woman who states that Bernie does not care about racism or intersectionality I would say he is the only one who truly cares about these issues.
