He's an amazing drummer indeed. Very old school; Lots of ghost notes, lots of grooves.. Too bad those toms are always super low in the mix on Maiden tracks. Those killer tom fills should be way more audible IMHO 🙂

How can you not admire the footwork of Nicko? I do play double bass now, but I learned everything maiden on a single pedal, when I was a kid I had an , 8,10,12,13,14,15,16&18 tom set up, a 22x16 bass and a 14x7 snare,
I spent two years drumming to the maiden stuff, at the four hours five days a week. I loved it, maiden stuff is embedded in my memory when I'm behind the kit.

First Maiden show I went to (Manchester Apollo, '98, Virtual 11 Tour), we met Nicko and a friend travelling up from Euston. He is a lovely fella, got us backstage. We were 18 and very overawed, got autographs and left. As a drummer I wished I'd had a chat eith him after the show. We'd just met our heroes though! Never forget it.

You'll take my life, but I'll take yours too
You'll fire your musket, but I'll run you through
So when you're waiting for the next attack
You'd better stand, there's no turning back
The bugle sounds, the charge begins
But on this battlefield, no one wins
The smell of acrid smoke and horses' breath
As I plunge on into certain death
The horse, he sweats with fear, we break to run
The mighty roar of the Russian guns
And as we race towards the human wall
The screams of pain as my comrades fall
We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground
And the Russians fire another round
We get so near, yet so far away
We won't live to fight another day
We get so close, near enough to fight
When a Russian gets me in his sights
He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow
A burst of rounds take my horse below
And as I lay there gazing at the sky
My body's numb and my throat is dry
And as I lay forgotten and alone
Without a tear, I draw my parting groan
