- See the dashcam footage and look at the damage and make up your own minds. I was involved in a crash in my Porsche 928 and I am really worried that the insurance company will total the car. These cars aren’t worth a lot, I’m afraid, yet insurance costs go up and up and up. After all the work we did to this lovely Porsche, can this be the end of it? Man, I hope now. Tell me what you think?

It’s the other drivers fault and as long as they are insured, they (the insurance company) should repair the 928. Let’s hope it all works out in your favour. Chin up, old boy!

The insurance company on their end will decide on value of the car and give you that if totaled, no more. The question is what that number is. With classic insurance (Hagerty) you have an agreed value, but I am sure their insurance company will come up with some terrible depreciated value. Personally I would argue for the highest “total” value, take that and buy the car back from them.

Never use the left lane in a roundabout turn. I have almost been totaled out in my boxster twice. I always run in the right lane now. People don’t know how to drive.

As a fellow Brit I say, pick yourself up. Dust yourself down and get on and fix the car. You don't buy cars like this because they make economic sense. You buy them because you love them. So less moping and more getting on and doing!

Just shows how stable and strong these cars are. Glad you are physically ok. Time will heal your mental trauma. Find a good classic body shop who knows these cars. Don’t settle for any insurance selected body shop. I know from experience… all the best with it Jay!

Don’t let them total it. Take a reduced settlement and keep your car. I did that with my Motorcoach, fixed it and still have it. You have too much sweat equity in your 928. I had two 928s years ago and loved them. Porsche ran a TV ad back then which said, Porsche 928, Germany’s answer to intra city air travel. Pretty clever.

I remember when the hood was damaged and watched the restoration progress from all your videos. . Life is a journey full of ups and downs. From what I can see, yours has way more ups than downs. Fix it and love it. I’m no expert but i’d look at knocking the dent out rather than replace the panel. It looks just like it’s superficial panels rather than any structural damage. All the best Jay

I feel your pain, Jay. Through a work event in 1990 (unrelated to cars) I had the great pleasure of test driving a 928 (I think it was an “S” too), a 944 Turbo and two 911s during one morning. This was on mountain roads in Austria too. It was the first time I had driven any Porsche. We were encouraged to drive them spiritedly. We had to take the cars out with two of us and I’ll never forget the bemused expression on the face of my driving mate after taking out the 928 and he asked me after that enthusiastic session, “what kind of car do you drive at home”? And my response was, “I don’t own a car at the moment”. 11 years later I got my own 911 (996 C2) and I still have it. I sincerely hope there’s an imminent repair solution for you.

Seeing the pain you're feeling, it's obvious this car is very valuable to you and you've invested a lot in it. It's not a cement mixer or a lawn mower to be thrown in the trash. It's beautiful and running great. I noticed how great it sounds. I would get it fixed and and continue enjoying it.

Dont give up after all your hard work, she is a beauty. If the insuranace right it off, buy it back and get the repair down. A quarter panel is a fairly easy job for a good body shop. Bummer. You're safe that's what matters. Doesn't take much to total a 928, so it's probably totaled but you could buy it from the insurance company and fix it. Good think you had a dash cam as the other party was clearly in the wrong. The problem with roundabouts in the US is people don't understand the rules and clearly they didn't understand that your lane has the option of exiting the roundabout and they need to maintain their lane which they didn't.

So sorry to see this video. I met you and your son a few weeks ago in Weston when you pulled up next to me in my 996 Turbo. I love the color and it would be a shame to scrap a solid car.
I think the other guy’s insurance should cover most of the repair, as you have video documentation of his turning into the side of your car.
North State Custom in Bedford hills is a reputable (and expensive) shop. You could also ask Speed Sport Tuning in Danbury (porsche specialists) who they recommend.

this is a interesting subject with cars concerning value and insurance. I have Hagerty for 996 for this exact situation, you state a value for the car that is agreed and technically the stand behind that. I hope I never have to find out how well this policy works, butI know with "regular" insurance they are quick to write the car off. So please tells us hope this plays out, worst case you take what they offer if totalled and buy the car back and work with independent body shop to fix, and next time get Hagerty, good luck.
As another Brit, I think you got away quite lightly. I would get another door and let the bodyshop magicians sort out the steel parts. I dinged up the rear wing on my GT, not as heavily as yours but the repair was straight forward as its steel. The biggest issue is likely to be paint matching, is yours Prussian Blue (Metallic)?. My GT is Venetian or Dove, can't remember, but the only thing that gives away the repair on my car is a) paint being better than the rest of the car b) the metalflake size being slightly different - but it was a repaint anyway. I think you have too much invested in this car to let it go, best of luck. Keep up the great videos

I have a 72 Citroen SM that l bought in 1983. It's one of my favorites. In 96 a car blew a tire, lost control and took out my right side door and front fender. The repair bill was higher that it's current market value. Since l planned on keeping it forever l let the insurance company total it but kept the car. They deducted the salvage value from the settlement. I had a body shop that l've used for decades do the work after spending six weeks looking for parts. The car now has a salvage title which destroys the resale value but l'll never sell it.
This is reassuring and comforting and also how I am currently thinking!

Let’s hope the other guys insurance will fix it but considering the 928s value, it might be tough. If the insurance won’t fix it, use the money from the other insurance and fix it yourself.

Sorry about what happened. I'm sure if you search hard enough you'll find someone that will repair that for you other than a shop. Shop rates are outrageous these days and I've resorted to working on my own Porsche. Keep the faith and don't sell it!!

That’s so disappointing! I’m sorry that this happened! I really hope it’s fixable. You can always total it out and maybe buy it back, then fix? Sometimes that works out, financially. No sense in giving up on it, too quickly!

Jay, I love to watch your channel and with all love and respect, you were in the wrong. The right hand land was not required to exit at all, let alone use the far right exit lane. You crossed a white dotted line, meaning you could lane change only if safe to do so yielding to anyone already in that lane. I say this for others watching (I work on ships and it is always important to study accidents to learn from them). You made a mistake as we all do from time to time. Usually you get away with a mistake without an accident, but not this time. People watching the video should learn from what was done wrong rather than write it off as bad luck.

If that is the case, I shall own it and MOVE ON! Shit happens. I’m not sure, though, how she hasn’t caused more accidents if that is the case. Kind of inevitable if you are in someone’s blind spot going round the outside lane of a roundabout. Just saying!
Agreed - relying on the reactions of other drivers is never a good idea, I know plenty of people who will drive right into you!
As you know there are two sorts of repair. The fix it quick, blow it over type. Sadly the other is rarer, real panel beating even rarer, but they do exist. My take: most of that will push out. Replace as little as possible. Aluminium panels need etch primer before finishing, but that should be common practice( though again rare)
On a different track, most of the evaporative control plumbing is in that arch, if there isn’t a liner then there might be some early stage tin worm behind. Stick with it whatever. This is a good instance of where agreed value cover helps.

Sorry that happened. My stomach turned when I saw the video and the results. As many have said, good that you had the dash cam. Get several body shop recommendations, use the best one and repair it! If they total, buy it back at a reduced price to repair or have as a parts donor for your next one if fixing it proves too challenging. Good luck!

I think you need to find a really gifted “panel beater” if such a genius still exists. It’ll probably be an old fella who still has a set of tools from the fifties and sixties. I’ve seen some truly gifted people over the years.
Concerning the accident, as a Brit living in Canada, I’ve adopted the position that, as a guest I don’t make a fuss but, the roundabout is a bit of a novelty in North America. I remember as a kid when they were replacing crossroads and traffics lights in the UK, there was quite a public information campaign explaining how they should be used. Not sure if that happened here.

If I worried about what my 914 and 928 were worth before spending on them, I never would have put a dime into them. So if it’s totaled, buy it back. And just so you know for the future, Hagerty insurance lets you add a rider (for a bit more $$$) to let you keep the car if it’s totaled. I have that as I can’t imagine finding another 928 like mine.

You weren’t hurt, metal can be fixed you can’t, so that’s the first positive. Secondly you had an onboard camcorder, so there is no question whose fault it was, you have the video proof. Thirdly if the insurance writes the car off, buy it back from them, you will be quids in and you can document that new journey. Exciting times.

Sorry to see this mate, but I'm sure it can be fixed and should be fixed considering that mechanically it's pretty well sorted. If that were me, I'd get it repaired. Had much worse happen to a motorcycle of mine (Moto Guzzi 850 Le Mans II) but I got it repaired like new. Hope it all works out with the insurance, all the best.

Ah man, I'm so sorry to see this :-( - some idiot actually hit the front of my 996 on Saturday, the damage wasn't bad, just a small scratch but the audacity of people to claim they haven't hit your car or it was already is shocking, and they didn't even have the decency to say sorry.

It's repairable, but it's an expensive repair. As far as the door is concerned, it's no biggie. Most repair shops would look for a good door from a salvage yard rather than repair it. The positive is that the door still opens and shuts just fine. There's almost certainly no chassis damage. The negative is the crease is still bad news. This is not a repair to have done at anywhere but a Porsche-approved body shop or a body shop with lots of experience repairing crash-damaged exotics.
Ugh. Sorry to hear and see that. Hopefully you can team up with a body shop.

Sorry about your car dude. 928s just don’t get a break 😏 my favorite Porsche model as a kid. Seemed space age to me then, compared to the antiquated 911s of the era. And pretty much all other cars back then too, come to think of it 🤔

I doubt it will be totalled. A door can be sourced from a dismantler the rest is fairly straight forward. I agree the door jamb is tricky, but 928 prices are so all over the page the insurance company will want to repair. That's the car RUclipsr guestimate, which is of course is fairly useless!!

Holy moly Jay😮 so sorry to see your wounded shark. Imo you can cut the wheelarch in a roomy way and weld in the new part. Maybe even GTS wheelarches😉...I would recommend to get a prussian blue door from a scrapyard instead of speninding hours to correct this one. Good luck Jay!!🎉🎉🎉

Have Cameras front and back,guy did a runner and the camera 📸 couldn’t recognize his number plate
Your car is very viable to repair,and Done ✅ properly
It is Alloy,and having been an automotive paint refinisher over 30 yrs,have seen much worse believe me
We had A Panelbeater who worked hand in hand with us that would repair back to new,and painted back to perfection like new✅
I’m sure the insurance should see you right for a full repair,and the value on 928’s is currently up&down as all Classic Cars
But commensurate with your condition you should be ok✅

That was a weird intersection you went through, I assume it was a double lane round-about. But I am reluctant to say I would never have been trying to overtake another car going through a strange intersection like that. Not to be rude Jay, it may not be your fault, but that was not defensive driving you were doing.

@@JAYREAD Pretty unbelievable one. Spun a rod bearing. First place that was going to fix it shut down after tearing the motor apart. Second place strung me along for 6 months about a warranty before confirming it wasn't valid. Just now finally getting it fixed as a second rebuild in 3 years. This is a cursed 911. Its killed 2 businesses, 1 person, gotten another person fired and hit my pocketbook for a good chunk of money. edit: oh and landed another person in jail.

I'm watching this video while i rehab my knee replacement so i can get back to my 928. It's sitting next to my 1969 Fiat spider that was totaled after an oncoming driver made a left turn in front of my daughter. I took the car back with the settlement and brought it back to its condition before the accident. It has a salvage title now, but it's a member of the family. Be sure and tell your home state when they tax you as if your car was worth a fortune that it's a salvage title. That will at least save you a little money.

It's the other person's fault, so his insurance will be paying for the damage. If they try to write it off as totaled, insist you want it repaired and put as it was. For me, I don't care what the market value of my cars are it's the sentimental value that's important. I keep repairing them as I go along as long as parts are available.

That totally sucks. Did you show the cop the dash cam footage? It looks to me like you were on the inside lane and turned across the outside lane to hit the turnoff. Although that round about looks fairly confusing. Just keep the car and pay for it to get fixed yourself. It's gonna cost you a bit, but at this point with the amount of money you've put into that car, you'd be better off in the long run doing that. If not you pretty much lose everything you've put into it. Major bummer. I feel for you.

So sorry Jay... i had this happen with my 987s. Did she get a ticket? It makes a difference with insurance companies i have found. Also this is a very generous offer from Diego. There are still nice people in this world. If you need a body shop I have one in Danbury close by that did perfect work on my Porsche and Alfa Romeo. Let me know.

Ins Co. Tried to lowball our 1999 Expedition for a parking lot fender and alloy wheel scratch & issued a flatbed to come and grab it out of the body shop. We never signed any paperwork to that effect; advised the body shop not to allow it to be towed. Body shop came in $100 less on estimate, then the ins Co. could no longer call it a 'Total. Car came out perfect; Do not let the Ins Co. determine your car's outcome>>get some comps (Haggerty etc.), a specialist on your side, thus is a Classic car

Nope. No one got a ticket.
So if they total it, maybe you could buy it back from the insurance co and find a shop which would do the work at a cheaper price.

Not really you don’t want a branded title Porsche. I’d walk away and get another. Hopefully it’s insured for agreed value insurance.
These cars have been going up in value over the last few years. Since you were not at fault, as demonstrated in your dash cam video, your carrier will not pay a penny for the repairs but will sue the driver who hit you's carrier for any and all costs to restore the car as it was before the accident. Most cars are totaled today because of the cost of the airbag deployment (about $20,000!). You have to insist on this! Your repairs are such that they should be easily handled by a good body shop. I had a 1994 928S4 which was in a far more serious accident (front end) and it was repaired like new (as if it never happened).
