Derren Brown is a British mentalist, illusionist and author. Since his television debut with Derren Brown: Mind Control in 2000 he’s produced multiple series and specials, winning two Laurence Olivier Awards. Derren doesn’t claim to possess any supernatural powers and his acts are often designed to expose the methods of those who do. To be fair though, it's not just skill Derren has. Most of these things he sets up require an ungodly amount of preparation before they even stand a chance of working. And they don't always work on everyone. I guarantee he probably has a pretty high percentage of people who don't "fall for it" and they just get cut out of the video. @@5RustyBin I think they say that between 10 and 20% of the population are suggestible enough to be viable candidates for hypnosis. I think it has a lot to do with the ability to be put into a trance state, and lots of us just can't relax enough to let it happen- we also aren't as easily influenced or suggestible and again I believe that is sort of the bedrock that these sort of techniques are built on. If you can't be put 'under' then nothing is going to work (I believe, though don't quote me on that 😂, it's been a while since I've read up on it. Though it is fascinating)

This is so odd. I am normally a Wayne with the worst luck of anybody I know. My friends and neighbors recognize my bad luck and pity me. But earlier today I went to get a haircut and it was a one hour wait. Well there was a lady outside whose car battery had died and she needed a jump start. I have cables but they weren't in the car. So I drove home to get them but couldn't find them. So I stopped at an auto parts store and picked up a pair. Drove back and got her car started, and she gave me 50 dollars. I said it was too much but she insisted I take it. To top it off, it all happened in time to get my haircut with no waiting at all. Then later I came across this video. It's the strangest coincidence of my life. I've jump started other folks before but nobody ever gave me money for it.

What most people call luck is actually a combination of 1) "fortune" best defined as a beneficial outcome and 2) "probability" - the mathematical definition. and 3) a belief in a metaphysical "luck" which is attributed to people, objects, moments, etc.
    "they got lucky"...
Did they perform any better than the probability would predict?
Often not. "they got lucky" just means "they received a fortunate outcome".
"they got lucky". They got the rare item after 10 events when the expected proability is 1/100.
Does this mean a spirit is bending the probability in their favour? No. A 1/100 chance will not always happen every 100 events on the 100th event. But the earlier or later the outcome occurs compared to the expected probability just becomes less and less likelier.

Luck plays a huge part in every day life. Right timings, right place, right people, etc.
these are set ups of calculated situations to build a level of self confidence and risk/reward so doesn't show it in a natural nature. although close to what can truly happen.
I agree that we take our own opportunities and create our own luck. luck isnt supernatural, it is a level of confidence and manifesting these feelings. When negative in mind, you notice the bad, when positive those same negatives are so minor they are not factored into things.
interesting psychology though, and I agree that we manifest positivity through self belief and confidence in our actions.

its how we get superstitions. especially in sports.
Id love to see an episode on superstition in sports and how we can create a level of self belief that makes us feel like we are going to beat an opponent.
even more so that we believe that if we don't follow our superstitions that something bad will happen. would a sports star blame the missing superstition on losing a game? side by side with a game they lost with the superstition, it would be interesting to see the mindset.
