From Darrens whole persona it's quite strange he used a lie detector test right? To prove something to us, the audience. It's quite well known lie detector tests do not work. Its not that they dont work, its that they dont work on everyone. People with Cluster B type personality disorders, who do not experience guilt or remorse, can lie very easily and do not produce the same resulting physiological effects as an ordinary person....so the test doesnt indicate when they lie. Obviously it works well on normal people otherwise it would never have been used at all.

Unfortunately this feels like watching Derren performing on stage. He's not presenting or investigating another case, he's just himself.
_"In my work I use a mixture of magic, suggestions, psychology, misdirection and showmanship."_
The magic begins with the wording. Amnesia usually describes a partial loss of memory that might or might not be temporary. You being in some kind of trance while driving home is not the same as your mind isn't in a state of awareness, therefor there is not much information to store in your memory in the first place. Might not be crucial, but it's the kind of trickery that comes to play in the whole episode.
Hypnosis is a topic in itself. There are two major branches: Hypnosis used in medical treatment as in pain treatment for example and then there is stage hypnosis which is completely different and bogus in most cases. It's like Uri Geller bending spoons for entertainment. Just a show.
And yes, in the end the same goes for this show. Guess I'm just a little disappointed having Derren in mind investigating claims of psychics in an earlier episode (or at least I watched it earlier, not sure about the way these two episodes aired).

Stephen Fry needs to update his language. We don’t say “mankind” any longer. We say “humanity”.

i once auditioned for fifteen to one, i was the only person who banked, i didn't get asked back cos the lady (acting like a nasty anne robinson) couldn't phase me, i was funnier than she was. i wouldn't feel at all comfortable being hypnotised, i think i'm the type of person who is so bloody minded i wouldn't go under. i'm in no hurry to put it to the test though
