This style of pressing is very hard for teams to get by as man city now have four really quality center backs and their double pivot players are very confident defensively and in winning the ball to then distribute to their wingers who are some of the best in ball retention.
That was way before Pep changed his system. City was basically in slight transition with Haaland around, and even during this so-called "inconsistent" period they could still grab several convincing wins - that shows you how really good their squad is.
Great break down of the tactics - as always. If Pep continues to make these kind of tweaks, and let's his City side play the way they can (without majors changes) they will win the UCL.

It's all great putting in all these tactical pressing and all these things, but Madrid don't depend on tactics, and they don't care, all they do is pretty simple you get the ball from city put in a long ball to vinicius or rodrygo and they will do what needs to be done to win the game, it's pretty simple.

Pep will change it in first leg maybe we can see a counter attacking city with haaland as target and we can see this type of press at etihad to gain advantage in second leg
Not saying that Madrid is neccesarily gonna win it but they are gonna trouble City with their pressing. As good as their pressing is, a fully functional Liverpool last season had a greater pressing than City, perhaps one of the greatest pressing side ever. But the way Modric-Kroos played through that press is ridiculous. Benzi and Vini might be more troublesome than any attack City has faced in last 2-3 months but Modric-Kroos need to be on their absolute best game for them to have any realistic chance. I still remember a certain play from last year's final, Liverpool was pressing high and so so well, for a moment it looked like Madrid is cornered where Carvajal had the ball a bit higher up the pitch, had a player pressing him and alongside was Modric who was covered by 3 players from 3 different directions who were also cutting the passing lanes, but as soon as Modric received that pass, he faked a pass in one direction, turned one player in the wrong direction, did the same to the second player and then passed back to Militao who was now free of any pressure because what Modric did, it was very small detail but highly effective and I was amazed, I understood why Modric is rated as highly as he is, these players see things normies like us just don't, which is why players like Modric, Xavi, Busi, Kroos, Pirlo etc aren't as appreciated by general public as much as forwards or attacking midfielders like Zidane, Iniesta, Ozil, Kdb etc I'm also amazed at people who think this is gonna be a one sided tie, even after last year, even after last decade, knowing how Madrid is a whole different team in the UCL and their form in league or cup competitions doesn't matter. If Modric-Kroos have a good day, they're still gonna trouble City a lot and would absolutely be the key to the tie for Madrid

Yup. And unlike Bayern, Madrid doesn't feel toothless when it comes to finishing, especially in big games. Also, if Ake is out, that'll be a big hit to Pep's structure. We'll have to see if Laporte can adequately cover him.
I love your videos but as a City fan I found this one to have some key issues in terms of tactical description. One of the main assets for Guardiola in the 3:0 win over Bayern was John Stones as a second pivot with Rodri which you made look like he is part of a back four. That meant that the 3 atb were slightly more narrow, Bernardo and Grealish hence dropped deeper into the half spaces and the space in behind the CM’s was actually covered by Stones. Crucial tactical point that you missed out on in my opinion
Stones moving to the midfield makes it difficult to break down Man City using short passes. Super quick counter attack is the only solution against this super team.
The problem is Vinicius, Rodrygo, Valverde, Camavinga, Militao are better than last year. No joke, a significant improvement in almost all of them. Modric and Kross haven't dipped at all. And lets not forget they also have another young World Cup Finalist, Tchouameni. So this narrative by English media claiming "Madrid are aging" is just blatantly ignorant. Madrid literally have 5 of the most sought after youngers actually playing important roles. But, I guess Madrid plays best when they are being underestimated.
i mean just look at bayern constanly dropping more players to drag city's midfield and open up more space for bayers and tricker and their speedy wingers .
It will be a travesty if they don't win this year. I honestly don't see any team that can beat them in UCL. Lads, wake up. Tifo uploaded
Man City's strength could be their weakness, check how Bayern occasionally break that press and almost punished them on a number of times.
It's because bayern has so many player who can run with pace like sane mane jamal koman diaves but madrid has only vini with such pace.
@@faanizafar2897 Rodrygo, Camavinga and Valverde can definitely hurt City as well in those situations.

@@faanizafar2897 Valverde and Rodrygo can definitely hurt City.
It looks like someone told him to smile more! Amazing video as always
In the second leg vs Bayern, Bayern did play the ball to Pavard and most of the Bayern attacks were from that side, so the press isn't actually solid just like every other tactics in football, if you make one area strong, somewhere it will be less strong
All of this make it seem, if we are a bit reductive, that the most lecturing game for Man City last season was that semi against Real Madrid. I think it is fair to say that this semi gonna produce the Champion's League winner.
I like Jon’s work more and more. I hope JJ can tempt him into doing a song.
Against Real Madrid there are moments we will suffer, but after 180 minutes we will win the against them!
Good dreams.
I genuinely believe, as much as I detest it, that this is City’s year; especially with the terminator up front. They looked shaky early season but now they definitely worked on their earlier shortcomings.
I say nothing barring a major upset or miracle that would prevent City from winning the UCL.
City upgraded their squad after last year, we didn't ( kinda but Tchoameni has been a bit disappointing ). But Vinicius, Camavinga and Rodrygo have gotten much better so we might have a chance
@@HarshvardhanKanthodeTake it to the bank, Man City will be beaten home and away respectively. Carlo Ancelotti has mastered the art of knocking Pep Guardiola out.
Let's be honest, Bayern broke through their press pretty easy at times, that chance that samne had in the 1st half if vinicius or especially rodrygo had that chance it's going in, and at 1-0 in the 1st half, who knew what would have happened. It's all great putting in all these tactical pressing and all these things, but Madrid don't depend on tactics, and they don't care, all they do is pretty simple you get the ball from city put in a long ball to vinicius or rodrygo and they will do what needs to be done to win the game, it's pretty simple.
Okay tactician.
Maybe Madrid should hire you and your expertise and fire Don Carlo.
@@AGE_97 😂😂

How much does it cost for The Athletic/Tifo to access photograhps from the games and use it in these kind of analysis videos?
Nothing I suppose. Video would cost a fortune tho.
It's hard to play under pep the way he demands thing such a perfectionist. Being just good in this city football team is not enough, they need to be smart and fast to react. That's why most of the player in city team strugle in their first year, but haaland is an exeption. Dude just build different, we really need to check if he is a human or a robot. Software update - restart and just plug in to the field.
I love the video but I love the subtle changes to the team names even more!
I think this may be the best educative analysis in the media. Well done!
Doesn't matter how good their press is tbh. I don't think much can beat Madrid's aura, genuinely.
Ake is important for them the way he track back winger and provide pass to jack grealish
Pep will change it in first leg maybe we can see a counter attacking city with haaland as target and we can see this type of press at etihad to gain advantage in second leg
That will be so stupid and I don’t see that happening

@@DrakeDHDerr Honestly, that's a pure disrespect to Real Madrid.
Can you please create a video on the expected tactics for the Man city - Arsenal game ? And what are your opinions on how the game will go ?
Not saying that Madrid is neccesarily gonna win it but they are gonna trouble City with their pressing. As good as their pressing is, a fully functional Liverpool last season had a greater pressing than City, perhaps one of the greatest pressing side ever. But the way Modric-Kroos played through that press is ridiculous. Benzi and Vini might be more troublesome than any attack City has faced in last 2-3 months but Modric-Kroos need to be on their absolute best game for them to have any realistic chance.
I still remember a certain play from last year's final, Liverpool was pressing high and so so well, for a moment it looked like Madrid is cornered where Carvajal had the ball a bit higher up the pitch, had a player pressing him and alongside was Modric who was covered by 3 players from 3 different directions who were also cutting the passing lanes, but as soon as Modric received that pass, he faked a pass in one direction, turned one player in the wrong direction, did the same to the second player and then passed back to Militao who was now free of any pressure because what Modric did, it was very small detail but highly effective and I was amazed, I understood why Modric is rated as highly as he is, these players see things normies like us just don't, which is why players like Modric, Xavi, Busi, Kroos, Pirlo etc aren't as appreciated by general public as much as forwards or attacking midfielders like Zidane, Iniesta, Ozil, Kdb etc
I'm also amazed at people who think this is gonna be a one sided tie, even after last year, even after last decade, knowing how Madrid is a whole different team in the UCL and their form in league or cup competitions doesn't matter. If Modric-Kroos have a good day, they're still gonna trouble City a lot and would absolutely be the key to the tie for Madrid
Sooo what about now.
@@Liamnoen Didn't I say Madrid aren't necessarily gonna win it? And okay, so one match City completely dominated, it happens. One bad match doesn't decide or change anything. If City and Madrid are to face each other again, City still would need to be extremely focused cuz Madrid are a team that can take the game away from you within minutes
Am I the only one who saw the title and thought that they were going to talk about Manchester City’s media relations team?
Yeah. It was just you
Both Chelsea and Liverpool really struggled against Real. I hope Man City will be better.
You are talking about two of thr worst teams in the PL right now, ofc city will do better

Its interesting to see Vini jr versus Akanji
We'll play Walker
Vini is gonna destroy him 1v1 as he does to everyone, it really depends how much help city provide akanji. Defending vini is a two man job, sometimes even 3 man job.
@@Gam3rLove and when u mark 1 player with 3 man thats when space opened up for Benzy. Just like he did in the last confontation. Its like Madrid disnt need lot player on the box to scored

Madrid is a different team when playing UCL matches
Either for Man City or El Madrid, the final match will be a sort of Bye.
Their main problem will be to go to Instanbul, it's almost an automatic win, either with Inter or Milan.
I really like the City's press but yesterday it showed alot of weakness.
Beyern broke throughout the press with quick transitions and they caused a lot of problems on the City's defense.
If City plays like this against Madrid they are going to be punished.
im nervous
Madrid transitions are very very strong. Modric is the master of instigate this
Yup. And unlike Bayern, Madrid doesn't feel toothless when it comes to finishing, especially in big games. Also, if Ake is out, that'll be a big hit to Pep's structure. We'll have to see if Laporte can adequately cover him.
Also bayern transitioned well but lacked a striker.. whereas madrid also transition well but have better quality upfront than bayern
And city were too comfortable
Adesanya vs Alex 2 vibes.
Can't wait!
It's funny how when Klopp puts Trent in midfield, hes "copying Pep" but when Pep adopts the pressing tactic its "genius"

It is very enjoyable to see them think Real Madrid are underdogs.
Aged well 🤫
Absolutely spot on.
i mean just look at bayern constanly dropping more players to drag city's midfield and open up more space for bayers and tricker and their speedy wingers .
City basically defend with five and attack with five. 3-2 & 4-1 when in possession this is why they concede so little in transition
Nobody will admit Bayern's poor finishing got them out of the UCL tie.
Aged well
Tifo knew Man city is going to win this year's champions league
Is that a La Tortuga t-shirt?? What?? How?? I don't understand, but that's awesome.
Amazing Tee Jon!!!
It will be a travesty if they don't win this year. I honestly don't see any team that can beat them in UCL. This year the biggest difference I see is that they are ok with not having the ball and sustaining pressure. They might need to keep their cool and manage the game, but I have a lot of faith in this team going all the way
This new formation might have worked against Bayern but Real Madrid aren't gonna throw away those many chances Bayern had.
Real Madrid improved camavinga, valverde, Vinicius and Rodrigo are playing better than last year. I do think Real Madrid will beat city
Madrid don’t care about tactics bro. They game is simple just pass a long ball to Vini or rodrygo and they cut inside and pass to benzema
If pep can just figure that out
He will scare the Madrid players
Then they don’t need a coach😂

It’s just haaland being an animal. Past years players like sterling would miss tap ins. Haaland just doesn’t
Press is not working against Modric and Kroos
Its not about Guardiolas pressing beating Leipzig. They won due to having a top striker like Haaland and other class players.
Tactics are a very small part of football
Tactics are as important as the players... You can have good tactics but if the players suck at implementing those tactics, everything falls apart, vise versa...
@Javon Browne If you have good players, all that matters is balance and cohesion of the team.
It is unnecessary detailing every micro tactic and positional play; most of it is irrelevant.
