Breadfan was originally released as a B-side with the singles Harvester of Sorrow, and Eye of the Beholder in 1988. It wasn't until 1998 that they added it to an album.
In the late '90s Metallica put out an album of all cover songs (Garage Inc.) - this is a cover originally by Budgie. You should check out the original to compare. Budgie was a cool 70s rock band. The whole Garage Inc. is fantastic.
Garage Inc is great. I was kind of tired if Metallica when it came out. I don’t hate 90s Metallica but it’s different. Load is a good album just not a good Metallica album. However when garage inc came out it was different. To me it had the 80s Metallica tone applied to covers and was a completely different feel from anything they had put out since justice. In hindsight, it was sort of a break from what was a couple of decades of subpar to shitty Metallica. Not until death magnetic did I really get excited about Metallica again except when listening to old albums. The 80s stuff never gets old to me. The only thing non 80s I can say that about is garage inc
Ah... No! Turn the page is better by Bob Seger and this song is better by Budgie! Originals are untouchable, these guys can suck the life out of just about any song lol
@@cryptoking7093 i prefer the metallica version of turn the page imo they don't "suck the life out" of any of the covers they did some of the covers i like more than the originals like The Wait, Helpless, So What, Killing Time, and The Prince
Metallica recorded this as a B-side for the Harvester of Sorrow single in '89. The song, Breadfan, was written and originally performed by struggling British metal band, Budgie back in 1973 for the album Never Turn Your Back On A Friend. You guys would probably be a little shocked to hear the original version by Budgie. It's definitely worth checking out just to hear the differences between the two.
Out of all the Metallica covers I've heard, by far my favorite is "The Small Hours" off the original Garage Days 5.98 EP. The bass line is just pure HEAVINESS!!! I wore out 3 copies of that tape.
So many of their covers are my favorites, starting with "Am I Evil" and "Blitzkrieg", then the entire $5.98 EP, through "Garage Days, Inc." I mean, c'mon. Who names an album the amount you're going to pay for it? If you're being charged more than $5.98, you're getting ripped off, and at the same time, "Our music isn't meant to be sold at discount prices!" (That's not an official quote, just a lifelong fan's interpretation)
The year-2002. The locale- Turner Field, Atlanta Georgia. Summer Sanitarium tour. I had backstage passes and met the legends. Gave a toast to Lars saying "thank you so much for Breadfan tonight!", he gave me a wink and signed his autograph. I'll never forget it.
This is a song for every Metallica fan. Who they are so good to , I met them in 1990 in Savannah Georgia. They talked with us an took pictures for an hour
That whole album is all covers by Metallica, this particular song was an older cover that they released back in the 80's. Another one worth checking out is "Blitzkrieg"
If you are going to do Metallica covers, then you must do their best one, which is "Am I Evil?", originally by Diamondhead. Absolutely excellent. Another great cover by Metallica is "When a Blind Man Cries", originally by Deep Purple.
I love it! I love the fact you two picked this song! Brad is like a 100 year old sturdy Oak and Lex is like a beautiful Willow flowin and rockin in the wind. Great job you two!
Metallica is definetly the #1 in the big four, Megadeath, Slayer and Anthrax, dont forget to do some Anthrax reactions! Bring the Noise , was kinda cool with Public Enemy.
@Mike Schwab Well that would make zero sense because 3 of the 4 Metallica members are the same since Kill em all in 81. Sure you can hire some studio musician who is good but they can't write or compose. And Metallica is the biggest band of the big four its not even a debate. Megadeth plays casinos and small venues. Metallica is still a top 5 touring act in the world.
@Mike Schwab They do stadium tours with other bands...they played the casino near me alone (I know because I went) Metallica played the 60k seat football stadium by themselves in my town. Both good bands, hating on Metallica because they are more successful is dumb though. Slayer is good but they only do one thing well...its a matter of opinion I suppose.
I saw Metallica on their last show of the Black tour in August, 1994 (fifteen feet from the stage) in Miami; they opened with Breadfan and nothing can compare to hearing it live! The intensity, the energy of hearing this song when the band first comes on stage is second to none! It makes this recording almost unlistenable, it's so tame in comparison. 🤘 And I just recently found that the concert in Miami from start to finish is on RUclips! Hell yeah!
Budgie! Budgie! Budgie! Budgie! Would be nice, but probably wouldn't get many views. The radio stations, for the most part ignored them in the US. Luckily, I grew up near San Antonio where they are rock gods.
Yes the San Antonio classic rock stations would always play " Breadfan " by Budgie. I knew about them because in my last year of high school in 1973 a girl i used to hang around with always bought albums from the import section at the record store. She had a lot of albums of band's that wouldn't get played on the radio ( Chicago area ) like Budgie, Atomic Rooster, Nektar, Can, Status Quo , Pink Fairies, UFO are just a few that come to mind.

Huge song. I bought this cassette tape with two songs - this and Harvester of sorrow. Any new Metallica music was gold back then. Wore this tape out, I think I still have it somewhere in my garage.
I have the cassingle too! I sent off for it in 1990 I believe. And the Eye of the Beholder cassingle with The Prince. I was just looking at my cassingles the other day… I like them but my cassette player broke years ago. Luckily I have all of them on CD as well.
