So it’s 2020 now and I’m still asking “is snapchat dead” cause it feels like it’s been on the decline and then I’ll get 10 people sending snaps in the space of a week. Followed by another 3 weeks of silence. Snapchat is odd.
It's the opposite of cold fusion perpetually being 20 years in the future. The death of snapchat is perpetually 1 year away.
This video just made me realize that in a way youtube stories and WhatsApp / mensseher status is a direct development from Snapchat.

Matt is really tall. I already knew he is tall, but seeing that clip of him walking made me realise it much more.

Pavel Janata Yeah, I've kind of realized that they're both tall, based on them standing near other people. And I think I looked up Tom's height out of curiosity (and then Matt's a little taller still). But the real feeling of "oh hey, your eye line is above the mass of most people's hair" didn't sink in until watching his snaptacles videos.
Matt said in another video that he is 6'4.

How not to sound creepy
Two years later and Snapchat is still going strong. Among my age group, Snapchat isn’t really a social media app, but more of a messaging app. Stories are a social media thing but the messaging is much more important, whereas with twitter and Instagram messaging is not nearly as important as posting.

Snapchat is one of the poorest apps I have ever used performance-wise. It smacks of something that was built with great haste and little care in a hackathon, and then the development team were too busy adding as many features as they could think of to ever do any refactoring or optimisation.

It's UI is hideous, things are hidden through menus that aren't explained and their graphic design is _too_ simplistic such that it's hardly understandable.
The most infruiating thing is the constant crashing tbh. No wonder insta stories took their idea and overtook it.

Rewatching the video and hearing Matt say that he doesn't have a crappy phone- he has an iPhone 6 and I laugh... then I remember how old this video is and that it was a good phone back then.
I'm still using one.
I knew Tom was red under the hood... something just told me it was so... something right in front of me... it almost feels like he wears it proudly.

Maxx B I was thinking that too, that the only really strange design decision was the yellow circles (clearly a branding thing). The bubbly corners aren't that big a deal without them probably.

The only problem really, besides the style and snapchat app, is circular 10 second video. If I could record 16:9 landscape video or take pictures then it would be much better.

Currently using an S8+ where the app works for the most part, but my previous two phones constantly crashed and lagged out when using snapchat. I thought iPhones had it better than I!
Nah, snapchat is crap on all platforms to be honest. On my Pixel XL, it frequently crashes or slows down so much that a video snap will play at less than 1 frame per second unless I kill the app and wait some time for Android to clear up the memory that snapchat probably leaked.
I, too, think the UI is absolutely abysmal, the app crashes all the time, and yet still use it. I'm in my mid twenties, and I've had to be shown how to do anything other than take then post a photo.
The glasses actually suit Tom.

I spent MONTHS trying to figure out where all these snapchat filters with dog ears and things were coming from, only to go to my kid brother and have him say 'you just tap and hold on your face'. I GOOGLED THIS BEFORE AND GOT NO ANSWER! Why do they not have instructions? WHY?
If someone came up with a wearable sunglasses-camera-thing that was as high resolution as was possible, tried to film linearly when possible etc and was... perhaps, bright orange or something, something obvious that says "YES THIS IS A CAMERA AND I'M A VIDEOGRAPHER FILMING YOU" for the purposes of specifically mapping out VR and the like, how would you guys feel about that? I feel like Matt's comment about "WOW you're tall" kind of brings home to me that people don't want VR footage from a gopro, they want VR footage from someone's faceholes.
Abigail V There's a guy called Mark W. Gray (no relation) who's an older guy from LA, he has a 180 degree 3D video rig with two big round fisheye lenses that he goes around conventions with, he's built it into a big paper owl with logos on it. I think in public settings where photography is ubiquitous it's fine but I'd find it weird just on the street.

From a teenager no snapchat is nowhere near dead all my friends care way too much about streaks and their score on Snapchat to just give it up. Instagram stories are far more missable but literally everyone will watch everyone's snap story and it isn't going anywhere for a good while.

I think the lack of explanation of the interface is an intentional decision. Kids, and adults too, feel really clever when they discover a way to do something unusual, so forcing users to learn everything by experimentation it's just a way to get at that feeling.

Android user here! The Android app is actually really bad. For a while there, it didn't so much take a photo to send as it used a screenshot from the live video coming from our cameras. That was years ago, but we had our frustrating experiences.

I feel these would be genius for Disneyland and other vacations. I'm torn between the 3rd edition with 3d capture, or the 2nd edition with water resistance....

Google Glass had a visual LED to indicate recording as well, the problem was people covered it up because it was annoying. Seems like the same is easy to do here.

So to download HD video the phone connects to the glasses over WiFi, downloads, does something, and uploads to the cloud. Then you need to later access the cloud to get the video out to put in your video editor of choice!?!?
Can you not just have your laptop/PC connect to the wifi and copy off the files? (I know the answer is "No: because Snapchat world", but I had to ask...
I agree about the aesthetics. Sunglasses with weird rings on them are a bit less than attractive! Thanks for the video

As soon as I started seeing the circles on either side of the glasses as beady little eyes, that's all I could see them as.
For some reason I was looking through the old videos, and I just realised that Matt's story about Uni and Tv productiin, etc. Is exactly like what Im hoping to get into. My question for Matt, Is it worth it? What's it like? Etc.
When i was in India i encountered three butterflies clustering together and then fluttering off. It only happened for a few seconds so i couldn't catch it on film, and since then i've kinda wanted some really simple recording tech always on the standby. Although A, i don't know about shades, and B, i don't know about frickin snapchat.

I think there’s a ProRes format which allows for an alpha channel in the video file. They could’ve probably gotten away with using that so the video looked circular when exported.

You can export your Spectacles videos from memories and there will be a white circular border around the video.

So the problem, as with anything Snapchat, is that the idea is alright, and the execution is complete shite.
I think the core problem is that Snapchat is involved.

How did you guys get the circular video to play then? What was the editing process like? And Tom you actually look good(enough) with those sunglasses. I didn't know Tom's lips were shaped like cat/fish lips, it looks like a lot of supermodels.

I really liked Snapchats interface but if, like me, you use anything other than the latest iPhone it basically doesn't work. It crashed so often for me that I recently deleted it altogether and moved to Instagram stories and I haven't looked back.

Question, is it possible to override the light that indicates recording? The webcam scandal comes to mind where the light that indicates the webcam is on is a separate USB device, which has obvious security implications.
