  • California’s Port of Los Angeles is struggling to keep up with the crush of cargo containers arriving at its terminals, creating one of the biggest choke points in the global supply-chain crisis. This exclusive aerial video illustrates the scope of the problem and the complexities of this process. Photo: Thomas C. Miller

    California passed a new green law for the large trucks which carry the goods. Most trucks do not meet the new regulations imposed by the State. Therefore very few trucks are in line with this new law causing a massive back load of goods and that is why we have this problem.

    • @John-
      @John- 2 года назад +1

      1) Because the ports are intentionally slowing things down.
      2) Because the trucking appointments can be ridiculously strict and doesn't allow for accounting for things like traffic, warehouse, or most ironically PORT delays. Say you're a driver with an 8 AM appointment but the ports takes 3+ hours to service you with your first container, how are you suppose to reasonably make your next 1 hour window appointment at the port when the appointment was grabbed under the assumption you wouldn't be stuck at the port for 3+ hours? There isn't really any convenient rescheduling possible (sometimes they make you wait days for the next appointment slot).
      Are you suppose to just work one container a day? Or do you have to bake in significant down time of doing literally nothing in between if everything works out?

    • @dasikakn
      @dasikakn 2 года назад +1

      @@John- thanks for the explanation. So basically port delays are cascading into more and longer delays downstream. Actually I suppose upstream as well because new containers end up in long queues to dock and are now off schedule too.

    There is congestion in ONE US port L.A.
    “There’s no congestion at the Oakland seaport, and we’re ready for more business,” Port of Oakland Maritime Director Bryan Brandes said in news release. “We need ocean carriers to reinstate services in order to stabilize the supply chain, and our import and export partners echo this sentiment.”
    The Port said containerized cargo volume is up 4.2 percent in 2021 but insisted there’s capacity for more. That’s in stark contrast to Southern California ports where up to 70 ships daily wait at anchor for berth space.
    Oakland officials said the port has not experienced vessel backlogs since August.
    According to port officials, 54 vessels stopped in Oakland last month - the lowest vessel call total since 2015. As a result, September import volume declined 13 percent from September 2020. Exports were down 18 percent.

    The real reason for the backlog is due to regulations passed by CARB with regards to which trucks are allowed into the Port of LA. The issue is that containers can be unloaded off of ships a lot faster than they can be trucked out of the port so when port tarmacs hit capacity, ships are forced to idle at anchor or do circles once the anchor area fills up. Because of environmental regulations put in place by CARB, half of the trucks in the US fleet that used to be able to ship containers out of the port are no longer environmentally qualified to do so (only trucks built within the last 3 years can). Operating ports at 24 hours a day won't solve the current backlog and is little more than a PR move. Temporarily lifting the regulations that block 50% of the available truck fleet from servicing the Port would resolve the whole issue. Given the lack of reporting and politics involved behind the matter, however, I don't see this happening any time within the next six months.

Truckers also mentioned you could be banned from port permanently if you complained too much with cops escorting you off property! Union workers probably got unqualified friends and relatives on! They also said many of these shipping companies hire their workers from impoverished countries because they can pay them next to nothing! @@stevestoll3124 that isnt entirely true. cheap labor overseas was a much large contributor. when the USSR threw in the towel in the 80s eastern europe was opened up to be used as major manufacturing centers for western countries. the same happened a decade and a half later in china when they loosened restrictions on foreign capital entering their country and all but announced to the west "bring your manufacturing here". essentially the result of communism post WW2 was that it closed off 1/2 of the worlds population to western investors, but these people were also fairly well educated and skilled, albeit very very poor... when communism fell these countries slowly opened themselves up, spurring a mass exodus of US and european manufacturing to these much cheaper areas. alot of ppl think unions and taxes drove away manufacturing, which in part is true but it's only a very small part of the picture, as we had higher rates of unionization, wages, and higher taxes during the "golden age of capialism" in which US companies' manufacturing base was domestic. what changed was the fall of communism, opening up the rest of the worlds labor force to compete with those here.
      it really cant be understated the impact of having half the worlds labor pool closed off to the west, and then subsequently opened up again. that said the increasingly litigious nature of US and western countries has definitely been a major factor in companies leaving.
