Worst part of all this HDCP DRM topic is that it got to a point where you only can consume movies and series on proprietary devices on proprietary services (smartTV apps for the TVs for example), otherwise you 99% won't get 4K, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos etc. and browsers allow for 1080p maximum in Netflix, Prime Vidoe etc. This is disgusting. You have all this expensive hardware and they are SO many software barriers to just consume and enjoy the content you PAID for. And there is no alternative. All of this just to try to prevent 1% of people from ripping content. I understand WHY they are doing this but it is still in THEIR responsibility HOW they handle these things. There are obvious better ways to handle these things

I've an inkjet from Brother (dcp-195c), has served me well for 14 years. It ain't fancy, but does scanning and pretty decent photo's for the rare time I need to print. Most of what I actually print is receipts for online payments, 'cheat sheets' for coding, pages from manuals for certain kit, or guitar/bass tabs/chords.
That I can still buy something like 4 or 6 full sets of ink from a reputable seller, for less than half the price of an official set.. is amazing

• @Xanthelei
@Xanthelei 8 месяцев назад +5

Yup, the current family printer is a VERY old (by printer standards, I think it's from like 98) Brother all-in-one that my grandmother has had for as long as she was self employed. She brought it with her when she moved in with me and parents back in 2018 and we've replaced the toner in it once since then - and the old cart had been in there since at least 2016. She used to print 200-500 pages in a go for her job and even then the toner lasted about 5 months. It still does a decent scanning and copying job, and as long as we can keep finding working drivers and the occasional toner I doubt it will be replaced until long after she's left us.
Meanwhile I have an HP printer that I mostly keep around for the scanner bed because the paper feed sucks, it holds maybe 25 pieces of paper at a time and cannot grab the last 3 to save itself, the ink is half the price of Gramma's toner AND EXPIRES FOR GOD KNOWS WHAT REASON, and has intermittent connection issues despite never getting unplugged from my PC unless I'm moving the whole setup.
Buy Brother printers, yeah it's more expensive at first and they tend to be bigger, but they're just BETTER. At least the prosumer and business level ones are.

@adi14882 8 месяцев назад +3

We use those same ones as in the video at work and we've gone through a couple of them so far. In case you're wondering, they last about 40k pages before the aftermarket toner gunks them up to the point where they leave residue on all pages even after you clean them and use new toner and drum. I'm sure they'd last a lot longer with OEM toner but that's not cost effective. In your case that would be about 60 years of use.

HDCP doesn't even prevent the sort of movie/TV piracy mentioned here. Ripping a Bluray/DVD does not involve HDMI at all.. it just needs a functioning drive, a PC, and a freely-available copy of MakeMKV. It might help against ripping live content, but since there's bajillions of TV scene groups out there it's clearly no barrier there either.
All HDCP does is protect the signal coming from the playing device (PC, Bluray player, cable box, etc) on its way to the displaying device (TV, monitor, etc) .. which hasn't been a relevant vector for ripping since the days of duplicating VHS tapes. *At best* OS makers supporting HDCP implement their own protections on top of it in order to get certified such as blocking screen recording when HDCP-protected content is playing, but even that is irrelevant as any such content has to be playing *from* something - a disc, streamed from a server, etc - and that something is going to take far less time and effort to rip than screen recording anyway.

• @Daktyl198
@Daktyl198 8 месяцев назад +11

@@zwenkwiel816 as far as I’m aware, as long as the cable supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 (aka 3.2 Gen 2x1 10Gbps AKA USB3) or later (which almost all non-charging USB-C cables do) then it has all of the pin outs required for DP over USB-C. At that point, it’s just on the video card and monitor to support the protocol. 3.1 Gen 2 even supports 4K resolutions or even higher at 60fps.

Theres no easy way to see that or inform the ppl you tech support for, what cable will work with what. Because I can't even tell

• @foldionepapyrus3441
@foldionepapyrus3441 8 месяцев назад +8

USB-C is largely garbage, by far the worst 'standard' to take off that I've ever seen. It is far to complex, adds pointless cost in the either way up connector, has far to many optional features. So most devices might be able to do x, but only through 1 not all of their 3 USB-C ports. There are no mandatary markings to differentiate between the supported speeds and functionality of the cable/device port - so USB 2 only on the stupid new connector are very likely... Then as the bandwidth available and how it is shared by the downstream devices isn't clear or even comprehensible to a less techie user, and devices are coming with so few ports now as USB-C is the only connector it needs. So when you plug in your Dock with a monitor or two and USB drive you complain you can't get the connection speed or display resolution you expect - the dock may be good for 4K 60hz on 3 monitors, but the bandwidth that takes means any other feature can't be working fast...
Then you get to the cables - tiny connector with lots of pins and because the connector is so darn small the cables itself has to be relatively thin, so they end up more fragile and/or stiffer, much contain a microchip in the cable for the power delivery to work, etc - full capability USB-C cables are just not a good cable choice compared to HDMI or DP cables for the role of highspeed, and the positive latching and durability of DisplayPort is really hard to argue with..

It'a funny that you meantioned the DP problems and this week I had 3 HDMI cases and in one of them I swapped to DP because the screen went randomly black while using HDMI. Another case was HDMI with handshaking issues. If the monitor was on before the system was on I had to unplug the HDMI from the PC and then plug it back in for it to work every time. However if I turned on the system first and then the monitor it worked every time.

[exasperated sigh] What's the point of having a 'standard', if your standard is a secret?
Some place in Europe, there is a standard 1kg block.
Building upon these and other advances, the meter was redefined by international agreement in 1983 as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
There's also one about how many wavelengths of light at a particular colour / freq a metre is.
For most of us, those are bit abstract, but we know the kg and the m are the same in Paris as they are in Sydney.
Now where would we be if France and Australia had to pay the intentional standards body a yearly fee, to calibrate and sync their measures, and the way that was done (as well is the numbers) was secret and copyrighted and patented?
You want people to adopt and use your standard. How are you going to promote that if you charge them money and then copyright hound them if they tell anybody what the standard is or how it gets calibrated?
That's not how you operate a 'standard' ~ it just isn't.This is monopolist business practice, the use of content monitoring and copyright content protection in the cable, and using a 'standard' to keep secret how it really works. the use of the word 'standard' in the title, is deliberately misleading.
I am an old Linux neckbeard, but this is everything we're used to in the Windows world, trying to muscle its way into the Linux world.
If you can patent or copyright or digital rights protect the speed of light, then your legal system is busted ~ not physics.

Used it for printing advertising pamphlets and stuff and for private use for misc printing. The toners lasted me five years before one of them ran out. Noticed that the toners cost as much as a new printer so bought a Xerox with higher resolution but newer ones has them "trial" toners that doesn't last as long. But it was cheap and AWESOME quality. And refilled toners are cheap so have bought a set of high capacity toners and replaced two of the colors as they ran out. Never again inkjet printer. Have a old HP inkjet that I use for scanning since my old scanner was printer port only, no USB. So bought a $50 HP for scanning on it. Seriously heavy to dampen what little vibration the scanner travel creates, to reduce jitter. It sat unused for some years, until I discovered SANE had created drivers for it, and a SCSI-to-USB cable means I don't even have to have a special box built (as I used to) just to run a SCSI card.

God, I feel 22:45 so much. I maintain an expensive Netflix subscription for myself, my girlfriend, my mom, and my brother. I have to pay extra for my mom and brother because they don't live with me.
I have a sideloaded Firestick that I use. It would be far cheaper to set Firesticks up for my mom and brother than to keep paying for Netflix. However, they aren't tech savvy and the prospect of having to teach them to use Real Debrid makes me sigh and continue paying for Netflix.

They had it for business just in years gone by, I think the branding was 'instant ink'.
It almost made a bit of sense, since the printer would tell HP when running low, and next day or 2, the guy would arrive to change carts/toner. It was a massive annoyance though compared to just having replacements in stock taking less than 5 minutes to swap out.

Linux only sucks because most of them have no personality outside of "I'm like windows just less functional" and the fact Windows has more compatibility with Linux than Linux has with other Linux distros.
3 Linux distros, one for gaming, one for everyday use, one for professionals would make it more streamlined and far more desirable.
As a developer in indie games the reason I don't make Linux versions is because 0.8% of my beta test base was on Linux, and yet 98% of issues came from all distros outside of Linux Mint which was the only distro to not have crashes, audio or graphical issues or clipping issues.
It's not like it isn't optimised, it runs on the Dreamcast's 8MB VRAM, 16MB RAM and Windows PCs from XP to 11 with 60fps, it's just that all the distros trying to do the same things while also trying to be so different from each other hinders them.
I only stopped using or making for Linux since while I originally kept Windows for Paintdotnet since Linux has no (good) alternative, I learned that nothing I did on Linux Mint couldn't be done on Windows with the sole exception being wasting unnecessary SSD space...
Until they streamline Linux, it will continue to suck, HDMI is a non-issue in comparison.

The reason they won't allow AMD to add support to their open source drivers, is because then people can reverse engineer it, thus negating any profits [big corporation] can make from it.
I don't make my engine open source because then people can take the hard work a single developer like me made and use it to profit from my work without so much as giving credit for it. And I'm sure the big corporation's reasons aren't as straight forward, they likely want to profit from licenses or not give freely to potential competition, but I can understand for the most part why they don't want to go open source.

Sooo, the compromises that Fairphone have made for repairability are not appropriate, but Framework's are A-OK? And you think that Fairphone's response "Linus'ed" it up? To quote some of your overused phrases Linus "What are you even talking about? Do you even hear yourself right now? No, you're actually wrong, for real though". It amazes me how unbiased you claim to be when the evidence suggests the opposite.
No I'm not a Fairphone fanboi, I don't have one, but I'd like one because my repairable Samsung Galaxy S4 is about to be made useless by my country's network changes. I like the idea of a phone with a battery that doesn't need a toolkit and isopropyl alcohol to remove, and if it doesn't play Cyberpunk on ultra-raytracing that's ok with me. Can it make calls? Receive texts? Take a photo or two that aren't horrible? Have support for years to come? Has a sufficiently powerful SOC to keep up with Android's bloated complexity? Yes? Then I'm their target demographic, and an unbiased tech reviewer would recognise this. I think that Fairphone's response to you is entirely appropriate, if a little unpolished.

As a little explanation for why static magnets arent a problem: The induction law stuff thingie (I don't know the english vocabulary for this) basically says: Induction only occurs if either the strength of the magnetic field changes AND/OR the effective area that is inside the magnetic field is changing. This is the reason why moving a magnet through a coil induces a voltage in the coil but if you just leave it sit near the coil there isn't any.

Linux doesn't suck. At least YOU can choose when to do Updates.
Sure on Windows you can "pause for 30 days or so" but when you forget, the consequences are big.
On a Windows machine, you come home and the PC has updated and rebooted and all your running programs are closed. 🤬
I hate that so much that I've decided to f*** on Windows and to switch to Linux. An Arch-based system should probably be it. I'm in the phase of choosing.
On this point, Windows is as good as dead to me.
And don't you ever suggest an Apple OS to me. I hate Apple so much, that I wish for them to don't exist.
They're the reason phone manufacturers ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack and micro-SD card slot. They are the reason for ugly Notch and hole-punch phones.

Don't go with Arch if this is your first time with Linux and you have no experience. Rolling distros in general aren't the best choice for new users. Would recommend something like Fedora Silverblue for a new user. Maybe Nobara if you are interested in mostly gaming. If you do decide to go for Arch, just stay away for arch derivatives and chose vanilla arch, use archinstall for an easy install.

Yes. Also no. There are 'online' and 'offline' attacks. An online attack needs to communicate with the router for every attempt or at least regularly. These can be mitigated in that way. Someone can be chilling nearby enough to capture your phone asking the router "hey is the correct password?", and by nearby sometimes it can be up to over a kilometer, but that's pretty rare.
Once that is captured, you run it through a rainbow hash table, or try to brute force the password until you get the hash that your phone originally sent, and voilla, you've got the password.
