Summer of 1968 I was a course worker at Mid-Ohio (I had just returned home from active military service). The McLaren team wanted to get a trap speed of their cars on the back straight during a practice session but the low level tripod would not stay upright due to the speed they were going (air/ground vibration). They asked me if I would be willing to lie down and hold it still for a few passes. Dennis Hulme flew by maybe 10' away twice! Later when I was in the paddocks a crew member came over and thanked me. I asked what the trap speed was-180 mph and I was only a few feet away!
Hands down the best class!!!!
All the CanAm cars sound like they easily could kill you. The 917 sounds like its capable of destroying planets.
I can't even handle how pretty that orange McLaren is. OMG, I'm going to OD.
Was that an earthquake?
The Porsche 917/30 is a colossal deity among its Can-Am brethren, but It is only in recent years that I’ve come to appreciate the important role the Chapparals played during the golden age of sports cars. Truly innovative, tons of character, not as weird as I used to think when I first saw them as a kid all those decades ago. It is clear to see the raw sports car aero dynamics in the cars, the aspects of which would influence other car makers and spawned ideas that would eventually come to dictate the world of motor racing generally. Simply pioneering, simply legendary.
@David Champey David, I think they were also banned. There were 2 years that they were entered; the first was with Parnelli Jones at the wheel and the second were Lotus cars. The problem with them was poor throttle response and second (and there is a video of Lord March describing this) that the nature of them was to continually increase speed so you wound up riding the brakes on them. The nature of turbines is that they run best near 100% and with consequent high fuel flows.
Pulsonar Jim Hall was a bloody genius!!
Pulsonar an aircraft engine in a car, those crazy Germans. I had the AFX slot car in the Donahue livery I think
they had hollow titanium screws... porsche spared no expense to win
Anyone else who would like to see a comeback of the Can-Am championship in classic car racing? Sadly, all of them dissapeared around 3 years ago!
WE WANT THEM BACK! But what about you?
Oh yes! Funnily enough, the Watkins Glen 6 hour race ran on the same weekend as the Can Am cars. The 6 hour race with Porsche 917s and Ferrari 512s on Saturday and on the Sunday they raced together with the Can Am cars. That surely must have been a sight to behold.

Hell, yah. The word "brutal" was invented for the CanAm series.
I saw them 2 years ago at Silverstone Classic, what a noise and what a car, incredible.
+Michael Westen The word "brutal" is overused.
I see them racing at Sears Point and Laguna Seca for the vintage races. It's just seismically wonderful to be anywhere within earshot.
Back in the day, watching an entire field of Can-Am cars actually racing was a sight to behold and a sound never to be forgotten.
Just hearing them on YT is a sound never to be forgotten, can't imagine these cars back in their prime...!
RIVERSIDE !!!!!!!!!!!!
Standing on it through the backstretch woods at mighty Road America...
917/30 may still be the prettiest race car ever built.
its quite ugly really
The 917/30 is one of the nicest looking, but I still prefer the McLarens and Shadows both aesthetically and aurally.
Saw this car race at Laguna Seca in '73. There were two qualifying races and it cleaned up in the first heat. Unfortunately the engine need replacing which they did during the second heat to get it ready for the final. It went even faster in the final with the replacement engine. The second place car was the L&M Porsche 917/10 that had been so dominant the previous year. The 917/30 just destroyed everybody. No wonder it killed Can-Am. Awesome display of speed, something I've never forgotten.
@@LANPartyAnimal Uh huh, the 917/30 killed Can-Am, but none of the other dominating cars ever did, like the McLarens that won 100 years straight. I guess dominance is fine, until it arbitrarily isn't?
@@christianponicki9581 it keeps happening to Porsche. Thats why quit LeMans as a factory team for so many years. The 962 was so dominant the FIA crippled it with new regulations instead of encouraging other teams to step up their game. Sad really because I enjoyed Can Am immensely with its anything goes mentality.
Only once did I attend an original Can-Am race, the 1973 Laguna Seca round. Mark Donohue, driving the Sunoco Porsche 917/30, DNFed the first heat with a cracked cam cover and lots of oily blue smoke. Fans watched Roger Penske's entire crew jump into action for the engine change, a very complex undertaking that seemed impossible in the time available! They succeeded, then Mark came from the back of the grid to win the main event and clinch the 1973 championship.
How much understeer can you fit in one video
I got to see the CanAm reunion race in 2017 at Long Beach during the IndyCar weekend. Went into the paddock area and talked to the people who owned and raced the cars. Took mega pictures and was awestruck! Then went to the grandstands just outside of the last turn just to see and hear the snarling beast coming out of the hairpin blasting through the gears down the main straight! OMG! It was the SHIZNIT! I was just a wee little tike when this series was around and I still have my 1/64th scale Aurora AFX CanAm slot cars! BEST, SERIES, EVER!
That 917 is one of the most recognized cars in the world. A Legend.
Having watched John Foulston and the like thrashing Can Am cars round Brands Hatch in the 1980s, it's quite sad to see these cars pottering along albeit one step up from sitting stationary on flat tyres in a museum. Whatever their rarity, these cars were designed to be thrashed.
To witness these cars being driven in anger must've been unbelievable
1:13: One of the most amazing race cars ever built...
Great footage, really enjoyed it. Thanks a lot for uploading.
Sadly there just trolling around !!!
Watched Donohue drive that car to an easy win at Laguna Seca. The engine blew in practice Sunday morning and Penske team replaced the entire engine assy in time for the afternoon race. Donohue clocked 1:01 around Laguna when he had traffic or no traffic. You could set your watch by it. Donohue passed on straights mainly but he passed on the inside or outside with ease. The turbo-panzer was superior.
ruclips.net/video/qrfD2ffW1hs/видео.html I can smell the clutch burning was he slowly drives off. Years ago at Amelia Island concours there was a Boss 302 Trans Am car doing a slow circuit of the grounds; from 50 feet away you COULD smell the clutch as the RPM were up and he was slipping the clutch to avoid racing off into the distance.
Nothing like a big block chevy in the back of a can am car
I was in college and just out when these CanAm cars ruled. I couldn’t afford the travel to go to where the cars raced but would have loved to have seen them.
I don't understand why they can't bring this fantastic form of racing back with limits on horsepower to keep one car from dominating like the Porsche that pretty much ended this class.
I was fortunate enough to have seen all these cars race in real time. From 1966 until 1973 I was able to see them at Riverside Raceway (the race was originally called The Times Grand Prix) which was the last Can Am race of the season. I also managed to make it to Laguna Seca in 1969 and 1970 as well. As an old man (I’m almost 70), these are some of the very fondest memories of my life.
I was there too. Started in 1962 and seldom missed a race at Riverside. Regional races or the Gran Prix. Great fun to be able to walk around the track and get close to the cars. Chicken wire fences and no worry about cars running into spectators. It was worth the risk..
ray you are not old just experienced..
Porsche 917/30 a.k.a. The Turbo Panzer.
P917 actually my favourite but that BRM just sounds so EVIL!!!!! Chapparal cool too!!!!
When you can't write a check for your favorite Porsche, you just have to build it from scratch, even if you have no auto mechanical experience.

Most of the top Can-Am cars ran full race big block chevy engines. The exception being the Porsche 917, it is a flat twelve. I believe some of the non turbo 917's competed in at least one early race and had great success and then Porsche made the larger effort with Pensky and the 917-30 with big twin turbos and 1,200 - 1,500 HP
The Chaparral driver is not using the wing the way it was meant to be used. I saw that car at Bridgehampton in the 1960's.
Every time the car came to a corner, the driver would put the wing in full down position to increase down force. As soon as the car was pointed straight, the driver would level the wing with the ground to reduce drag. That was the whole point of having the moveable wing on the car...
Yup - the 917 is the peak of Can-Am racing. Incredible noise from all of these Beasts!
When the Porsche factory and their money got involved the privateers where out spent. The canam was not a fair fight. Kick the Porsches out and restart it. No blown engines allowed! NA only.
CanAM was the peak of "no rules" racing, the 916-30 was something to see.
Mark Donohues biography has a chapter on helping develop the 917-10. It is very interesting.
Probably the greatest part of American/Canadian racing history ever to date...Too bad it will probably never happen again....sob sob(love the video tho
I don’t know how you came to that conclusion. CanAm was spectacular but it was never close racing. The 917/30 was in a lot of ways the best/worst example of it. I don’t find that kind of thing entertaining. I like close racing, rather than demonstration laps by a car that’s two seconds per lap faster than the nearest opponent. That was the problem wit CanAm.
How many other Carrera slot car fans stop by here. I've got the Lola and the 917/30. Watched a lot of this with my dad back in the 70's.
I'm confused how the 917/30 didn't end up in the trees 3 km away after that turbo spooled.
Can-Am cars where the meanest nastiest loudest and fastest cars out there. The thing I liked about Can-Am rules there were no rules just about anything goes.
I saw these race at RIR back in the day. Donohue/Follmer.
Almost unrestricted racing. These cars are adult go-karts. Wicked fast and could corner just as well.
I was very young in the 60's I find it is truly amazing that I clearly remember these cars. Perhaps if Dad had taken me to the tracks to watch them in person my life would've been completely different.
I was very young at the end of the Can-Am era. I never saw any footage until much later in life but the cars made a huge impact on me. Most of my toy race cars growing up were Can-Ams. So sweet to see this stuff!
Looks like the BRM finally got the right size rear tires. 50 years to late!!!
I really love the BRM Chevy with Castrol livery 😍😍😍
Porsche 917/30 is the king, no doubt, a true monster!
Back in the day when race cars were brutes and we loved them!😁😁
Ah Can-Am, certainly the beefest time in motor racing.
thx so much 4 ur footage as I couldn't make it 2 fos 2017, though I only live 5 miles away. once again cheers m8.
Although a legendary event , this does not do these race cars justice , these cars need to be seen at race speeds to truly understand the power they had . This is a noise , smell and eye candy event ..................
TURBOPANZER!
is that the 917 that had the hollow titanium screws because porsche went nutso with the design just to win XD
I would have loved to ride in one but not try to drive one. Too much power!
Yes to CanAm cars in vintage racing. I thought I saw them at Laguna Seca two years ago but maybe not. (Last year doesn't count, of course.)
917 likes, I cant add one now can I
Dilemma for sure 😅
No Texas license plate on the rear of the Chaparral.
These cars are/were works of art.
強すぎて「Can-am」シリーズを潰した1000馬力のポルシェ、シャパレルはお宝映像
5:08 schwoba und porsche, des passt
weiter ! Weiter ! Weiter !
The white one with castrol sponsor is LOOOOOOUUUUUDDDD
True Days of Thunder. Torque monsters.
From standstill to 124mph in 5.3sec. That's brisk in anyone"s book
The Chaparral was on the cover of Road & Track. I had never seen a high wing before . I thought it was part of something on the track. Jim Halls car would have cleaned up if they had had more money from GM.
It cost than $ 175000.00 the Porsche 917 /30
I can smell the Cam2 from here.
Remains the most interesting series ever. All the F1 drivers and others seemed to agree.
I disagree. The F1 guys raced it because it was a challenge and required the best drivers. But it was never close which is hardly interesting.
That was some good wood
"Sunoco beast"
3:34 that is a cat
YEEEPPP, ... THE PORSCHE DID IT !!! ! !!! :-) NO TURBO - NO FUNNNNNNN !!! ! !!!
My Dream ....the best race car of the world !
500 Cubic inch Chevys?
Love the Chaparral.
you guys are the best. When does the event go on? I'd love to make it out next year.
Absolutely would love to see this series again. They could build these again no problem I would support this series
It would never be allowed in today's climate. They were massively unsafe cars responsible for a lot of injury and death. All racecars were back then. It was more accepted.
That was the best sounding 917 that I can recall. It truly sounded demonic, but in a ‘good’ way 😉!
Sounds great but for a truly demonic growl nothing can beat a McLaren M8F downshifting in the corners...
James Aron Obviously, this is a matter of opinion 😉!
What a beast! 1,100 bhp. Makes me think of the late Mark Donohue, who was instrumental in the development of the 917/30. Quite a thrill seeing the Chaparral 2E as well. IMHO, the Can Am series was the pinnacle of road racing in North America. Nice to see these machines lovingly restored and running.
Closer to 1200, with upto 1580 in qualifying spec
@@IamSnehan Never made 1,580 hp. After literally years of researching it, I can find no evidence it ever made more than 1,400 and even that is a bit of a maybe. And 1,100 appears to be true for race trim.
@@thethirdman225 You're probably right. Depends on how accurate the hp measuring systems were back then I guess
@@IamSnehan A lot of people don’t realise that horsepower is _calculated_ from torque and RPM.
@@thethirdman225 true lol
Love can am Cars
Best race series ever !!! Shadow DN4 was my favourite. The original rules were open cockpit and covered wheels that was it !!!
The Shadow was a wonderful car. A favorite of mine as well. Was lucky enough to see all of these cars race back in the day.
Major Fatty + must been a 2 seater.
And the 1974 isn't fully considered as true Can-Am season. They added few more regulations that year and that meant beginning of the end.
The Shadow is an evil-looking car, but oh so nice!
Cool dude!
COOL CARS BUT KINDA BORING
Dan Bonacum I have never really understood the Goodwood festival of speed. All that standing around to see a car travel two kilometres...
@spam lite No, I'd rather see them doing laps of Goodwood. Wouldn't you? Why can't that happen?
@@thethirdman225 Because it's a Sprint not a circuit.
@@1mariomaniac No, I meant the actual Goodwood circuit, not the road you see in this clip.
@@thethirdman225 Oh sorry then. Didn't know that there was more than one track, that would be pretty cool. 👍
What is this? A parade. I like to see race cars racing. Not like this.
James, this is at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and they are essentially demonstration runs up a hillclimb course. It is not a race except for those who wish to race the clock. The fastest time up the hill is by a F1 car, either McLaren or Mercedes, can't remember which.
The goodwood festival of speed is an event that takes place annually every June or July in West Sussex England where people from around the world show interesting cars of history and demonstrate their driving capability up a hillclimbing track.
Not much different from how the races went. The Porsche was two seconds a lap faster than its nearest opponent. The “races” were more like demonstrations.
THat sunoco porsche sounds aweeeeeeesome !
