Larry “Ras” Bertelsmann was a North Shore surfing legend. His maneuvers and carves in the water heavily influenced the Dogtown “Z team” from what I’m told. Both him and Uncle “Buttons”(RIP).
When Jeron said how thankful he was and giving props to everybody who's doing this shit I almost cried. Thank you Dubs ... I still remember the day I came home with the mouse video ...
I'm a white dude from Germany and when I started skating mid 90s Kareem was the one for me, his style is legendary..... I was so proud when my mum bought me some Duffs Campbell Kicks at the only tiny local skateshop in our little town
Barbee has always stood out since day one for me. The uniqueness of his style and tricks along with that he was my age when he started blowing up was always an inspiration.
Much love for Sal Masekela. An unsung X-games (and sports in general) legend. ESPN needs to do a 30 for 30 on him. He was there for so many iconic moments
What a great show guys. In my late thirties and grew up skating in the same Tony Hawk, 411 era, so there was heaps of nostalgia here. Showcasing black history in such an authentic way is so cool. Loved hearing Steezus talk about Kareem and Brandon Turner. So sick.
Great episode. All the love and appreciation brightened up my day. Also agree with the positive comments about Daniel Castillo on the show. I used to see him around all the South Bay spots in the late '90s and early '00s when I was a kid. He was always really cool and friendly in real life too.
Almost three hours of black skate history ? Beautiful !!!!! Best episode I’ve seen by far , never heard of Steve Steadham before until just now , I feel like I just learned about a true idol of mine kind of similar to when I first found out about pele or Jordan as a kid haha , I got chills watching him skate like that , something magical truly , learned some new things today and I couldn’t be more grateful , HUGE ups to nineclub for putting this together , deeply inspiring seeing all of this , also Kelly your the best, this episode means so much to so many black skaters

Human(Hue-man) means "colors of man". I am not colorblind, and see us all as humans. With that, i get kinda of weird when we highlight being "black" and our accomplishments as black folks. I participated in an interview for Snowboarder magazine a couple years back in regard to being black in the snow industry, it was cool, and also awkward. Please don't confuse, I truly enjoyed this episode, the walk down memory lane, and the celebration of everyone that skates. 👊🏽
Been watching you guys for years now. I love listening to you while I work as well. This was a great episode. I’ll become a member soon! Dixon’s part hit me so hard. His steez was amazing. I love seeing him still skating, and more importantly being healthy and happy.
Brandon Turner inspired me so much, I loved the whole shortys fulfill the dream team. such an awesome time to start skating, then when I got back into skating later in my life Keelan dadd in parental advisory blew me away, but again so did the whole crew, much love brothas
same, when i saw that in depth interview that Vice did (i think it was Vice) that features him switch hardflipping wallenberg i hopped off the couch like a mf and got my mf roll on and haven't slowed down since.
I got to see Sean Sheffey skate Brooklyn Banks back in the Bank's prime era and it was a sight to behold! Never seen someone ollie so high with such authority. You could here his tail snap the ground from down the street. Dude was STURDY and had the most epic pop. 💪
This was a REALLY good episode, and a VERY good way to truly just genuinely celebrate black skaters, talk about them, the back in the day stuff going on, etc. Really well done!
1 day for veterans and 1 month for black people? How many days for any other race than black? 0 This is not diversity, it's racism against all other races, totally ridiculous, really sad to see these politics injected into skateboard, really really sad!
First time I saw lavar micbride was a early 411 he broke his tail on a 360 flip down a hefty block set then " fixed " it, turned the board around so that the tail was the nose and floated a perfect 360 flip down it, using the broken board and landed it bolts. Perfect 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I moved to Oakland from El Salvador in 2009. Skating in the East Bay was sick. I would see Ron Allan at Berkeley then at Emerville years later. I never new who he was. I just saw him skate and rip. Learning about Ron makes me feel happy and stoked!
Ray Barbee and Sal Barbier were like the first famous and really influential black street skaters, especially in terms of history they're the most important. They both had their first video parts in 1989 in Bones' Ban This and H-Street's Hokus Pokus. For people who haven't seen these; Powell Peralta has all the old videos on yt in hd for free. Bones Brigade Video Show 1984 was the first skate video ever. Lances opening part is still one of my favorites.
DL and is comments are amazing! Glad he came for this episode. Great show and theyre all iconic! I specifically only played THPS with Muska and Kareem, then getting the secret tapes i was on one! And needed all the boards and caught the bug
Showing my age: Ron Allen and Ray Barbee always have been two of my favorite skaters. And the best board I skated was a Ron H-Street model back when noses just started to get a little bigger (like maybe 4 inches).
Kareem was my favorite skater to use in thps4 on the GameCube and I was so happy to see them add different era-outfits for all of the pros in the thps1+2 remake. I remember seeing the Keenan Forever T-shirt on koston in thps4 as well and then learning about it as I got older since I was actually born the same year he passed. Gone way too soon tho man. A lot of people started skating just because of the Tony Hawk video game. It was Tony's idea to put other real pro skaters into the game instead of crazy game characters like the producers wanted. Which was genius, since people then were searching out their video parts and because they were street skaters like Muska, Kareem, Reynolds and Rodney in it, people actually felt compelled to try their tricks and start skating themselves, since it makes much more sense/is much easier to start riding a skateboard around your neighborhood than having to find a halfpipe and learning how to drop in.
