Kalis hooked me up once when I was really struggling. It was a small thing for him I’m sure, but I’ll never forget it. I’ve tried to reach out and thank him again and let him know I did in fact come out on top but he probably doesn’t check his dms. So Josh if you’re reading the comments, I’m the single dad who was in Portland at the time around 2013. Thank you. Not only did I get a little more time to skate but it lifted my spirits for a while. And I made sure to put those DGK stickers all over east and west Portland.
Josh is one of the most influential street skateboarders of all time. He’s street, he’s gritty, he’s raw. Kalis is a pure skate Rat at heart. The mentality of skateboarder who understands the industry and history of skateboarding and one of the best ledge skaters to exist. Him and Stevie at love park is truly one of the most epic duos. Pure masterclass and has had one of the greatest careers in skateboarding. He’s top 10 of all time for me 💯
@@mjones7887that’s honestly a great idea. 👌I hope Jonah Hill can somehow make a sequel to mid 90s and make that happen. It will be difficult because the old Love park is torn down. The film Would have to have a good script and use real pro skateboarders for actors and somehow recreate love park and not be anything like the film “ grind” 🤮. Lords of dog town, mid 90s, kids and even street dreams got the culture right. Noteable mention is the film “ skate Kitchen” which illustrates the lifestyle of a group of female skateboarders in New York City. Check it out if you haven’t seen it 👌
I showed up at LOVE park with a friend and Josh and Stevie were so welcoming. Two 19 year old skate kids from Holland for the first time in Philly. Josh even hooked up a pair of DC Lynx. Amazing memories! Thanks for coming on the Nine Club. RESPECT.
The fact that he has etiquette about spots and scenes says so much about him. Kalis is the quintessential street skater. Y'all are in the presence of skate royalty right here.
It's funny that he brought up selling his dad's baseball cards. He sold some to my boss, when I used to deliver pizza. I'd give anything to go back to the 90's. Josh was the only one in our crew, who made it out. Much love and respect.
Yes!! Thank you Kalis for representing Michigan and always keeping it real. You came to Jackson Casey’s video premiere in Ionia back in 2005 and we couldn’t believe a real pro skater would take time out of their life to support what we were doing. It meant the world to us river rats. Thanks, man.
When you listen to his story it becomes undeniably clear that Kalis did not choose skateboarding, skateboarding chose Kalis. Thank you Josh for everything you've done for skateboarding and the life lessons you've imparted. Mad respect.
Thank you for this incredible interview, Josh is easily one of the most engaging guests you’ve ever had on the show! What a career the man embodies, truly a living legend.
It takes 349 episodes for the Nine Club to get Josh on the mic huh? Such a Legend and Og right there #DGKalis all day thank you Crob and the Nine Club 💯
Kalis in my top 3 favorite skaters. Was hoping he would mention SEEK, I loved those boards! Josh briefly touched on something that I find really interesting, the balance between pros and non-pros in skateboarding. 99% of skaters arent pro and for josh to recognize that part of the culture is a huge reason why DGK stays relevant in the streets.
i grew up skating in michigan and ran into josh sometimes, he was super nice always helping other skaters and always selling stuff outta his trunk. windwaves n wheels - purple east - kzoo sk8 zoo - it was super motivating to see him go big because he was a ripper.
Born in 85. Growing up at first couldn’t just download any song in the world. Skate vids introduced me to so many bands. Dinosaur jr,luscious Jackson, dj shadow. Man so many more
My pops was super anti-skateboarding,.. that when I got suspended from school, I would have to saw my boards in half... That was over 20 years ago and I'm still pushing,.. on the weekends!!🤙🏻
Thank you for this. Im 42 and use to skate many years ago. I live in Denmark and i even knew about all the names he is talking about. THANK YOU FOR THIS!
Kalis is a real one, was blessed to hang with him in Toronto a few times, gave me some good advice back in the day that helped me quite a lot. If you see this Kalis, thank you.
Been waiting for this one. Man what a journey. My brother played pool with Josh at a spot after ASR back in the day (said he was super cool) and I met Josh at Cowtown around ‘04, he was super nice! His 3 flip over the can in Heavy Metal is one of my favorites. Stoked on his success and the fact that he can forgive his father is huge! 9 year old Kalis needs love/healing I feel. Stoked he’s still shredding and doing well!
My mom took me to uprise to buy his shoes and he walked in the shop and made the transaction with me. Jackson was doing the transaction to. Another Chicago legend
Been waiting for this interview forever!!!! Thank you Mr. Kalis for letting everyone get a taste of your amazing journey my guy!!!!! Thank you all on the Nine Club for your persistence in making this happen!!!! Legends all of you!!!!
Anytime you would see his BMW outside the skatepark pulling it up, maybe happened like 3 or 4 times growing up, he would also be in there killing it and was super dope and down to earth, talk to everyone, super chill dude.
dream guest. One of the all time best and most enigmatic street skaters. Influential beyond measure. Pure, undiluted inimitable style. Kalis's legacy is cemented in skate history... Thank you so much guys for getting him to do this. Super interesting human never mind the skating contribution
Grew up skating with Josh in Grand Rapids. He was gnarly way back at age 14 I'm guessing. If you read this Josh I'm sure these will refresh some good times. Sean Sheffey hitting those steps in the back of Amway next to the Grand Raiver. Camping with my parents and running into Ed Templeton at Rotation Station. The Fronstide 180 grab you did over the movie theater gap on Alpine. And I was around for the months long grounding when he got caught selling his dads cards .
Kalis is the epitome of a skate rat, authentic and one of the last real ones left. Met him years ago when he came to Hartford...out of all the pros I met over the years, one of the realest.
I'm also from Michigan. Sounds like you made it through a lot of crazy stuff Josh. Sorry to hear about the rough situation you had with your family growing up and the other stuff. So glad to see you doing well and made an amazing career out of skateboarding despite everything.
Kalis looking at Yuto's accomplishments and just asking "Does he skate from spot to spot" is prime time Player Haters club stuff lmao. Classic, he's a true skate rat.
Been a fan since his part in the Toy Machine video. Really stoked this happened. Liked. Sounds like the dude's been through a lot, and he came out the other side like a champ.
This episode dropped a few days before my son’s 14th birthday, and all he wanted was the dc Kalis truth thrasher collab, copped it for him from eBay this past weekend too. I don’t even sign onto RUclips but had to to drop some love for Kalis, you the sickest. We rep anything Kalis, from Los Angeles to Philly much love. -Pokey G
i remember moving to SD from CHI back in '93. i didn't have a car, so spots were hard to find. but somehow i trekked to balboa park fountain one time...soo bummed. it was like the SoCal EMB. but only bricks and a round ledge. HAHA!!
Photosynthesis was one of the first skate videos I saw as a kid. Seeing Kalis and Stevie skate love molded the way I wanted to skate. I went out to dinner with Josh almost 20 years ago after a DC demo in Texas back in the day but I was too starstruck to talk to him lol. Really cool dude back then and had a good time listening to his Love park stories. Dope interview!
wow! this guy is such a genuinely great person! I have seen interviews with him before and always has a very sympathetic way to talk and tell about so many aspects of life. just the thing he mentioned he learned about validation. so nice to watch this interview
Josh is the best glad i got to grow up skating love park from 96 till it closed for good. Best dude glad to call him a firend. So much sick stuff would go down at love everyday 94 till 02 was the best love era.
the growing pains some of these iconic skaters share honestly got me reminiscing on how it was when I grew up!! Got me thinking how we are really all quite alike even if we come from different backgrounds. had some similar experiences from his I feel… i Could name a few… but long story short thank you nine club and Josh for sharing your story it really make one feel way less alone in this fuckin’ place💯
I filmed the tre' flip over the love can! lol! Great interview guys!
You took so many dope love/philly photos 💥💥💥
Legend!
WHERES THE SEQUENCE GEE?!
ryan gee gifted unlimited 🫡
Iconic, that picture was skateboarding to me. Still the back ground on my phone lmao
It takes a lot to push through anxiety, huge props to Josh for nailing this!
THIS💎
Couldn't agree more, anxiety sucks.
Was looking for this comment. Serious. Almost wish he would’ve circled back at the end to talk about it. What a legend.
It's about time that this happened. Thank you guys for sitting down with Kalis.
Gotta thank Kalis for sitting down with the nine club
They’ve been dodging him for sure

@@Billiamkimberid love to see that but I doubt filmmakers could do it justice to how prominent those two were in that specific time period.💯

wow. one of the best ones in a long time. this one might crack into my top ten nine club interviews of all time.
fuck yea
He couldn’t remember much, off the rip, idk if he should’ve tried to sit down and write down a timeline beforehand or something.
Roger’s the man for helping Kalis remember timelines and peoples names, etc. Dude’s definitely been around the block! Haha

One of the most honest episodes in a WHILE.
legendary, PLEASE ERIK ELLINGTON NEXT. As a Baker 3 baby I would appreciate that interview damn near more than anyone else lol
I second this - lets get ERIK ELLINGTON AND JIM GRECO on Nine Club

yall should add "Phone a friend" to the show. Let the guest FaceTime the homie to verify time lines and story lines lol

It’s crazy how even as grown men a son will seek validation from their fathers no matter how awful they may have been to us. That never goes away.
Best tre flipper of all time

"does he skate from spot to spot?" 😂 legend
Kelly was gonna cry when Kalis was hyping him up.

Why didn't you go to Washington Street Park?.we was always there skating foo..
@ washington didn't exist in '93.
You could hear the second he relaxed and was like, ok I got this. I had no idea he had such a crazy upbringing. Great interview.
The Philly PD, with all the problems, had a special task force with under covers to protect a park that the city just tore down. What a waste.
Its disgusting
Nice Josh represents Michigan born and raised in Detroit here still here 💯
I almost malfunctioned!! I love that! You the man Josh!! Thank you for all you have done for skateboarding!
3+ hours my headphones are glued in my ears for this episode. 🔥
I just had a dope session in my DC Kalis yesterday. The universe brought me here😂
I really respect Josh. I respect others who just keep it real and don’t pretend about who they are or what they’ve experienced.
Always loved Kalis, especially being from the dirty mitten. My youngest has two pairs of Kalis! 😎
The love park under covers in the Kalis shoe😂😂🔥 one of the coolest fuckin stories I ever heard in this show. Thank you thank you thank you.
