Since 1950 I've watched this classical version & each year it shows i jump & giggle to it as if it were the first time. It's never lost its magic for me.
I just watched this. I also grew up in the 50's, and watched A Christmas Carol on TV in black and white, but I don't think it was this version. I was very impressed with the characterizations, and the production that went into this old version. It's so good that these old films have been preserved for the next generation.
Alastair Sims did a 1971 animation version which won an Oscar although I do believe it's the 1951 version set in cartoon soundtrack is identical to the 1951 Christmas Carol

This is one of the best versions of "A Christmas Carol." My personal favorite because it's presented in such an exceptional way. Excellent acting by all. Charles Dickens was a genius to create and write such a moving and heartwarming story. It was first published on 19 December 1843, and 177 years later it is considered one of the greatest pieces of literature to be written. Thank you Sir Dickens for your masterpiece story about Ebenezer Scrooge and all the other characters that have become iconic. I treasure "A Christmas Carol" forever and a day and am grateful that I was able to appear as Mrs. Cratchit in "The Christmas Carol" in my community when I was 18 years old.
to think that he wrote it because he hated what had happened to the holiday during the victorian era and ended up creating a timeless tale of redemption by mixing three different genres...horror/scifi/fantasy
Sir Seymour Hicks was born in the 1870s and was a very famous actor from a youth until his death in 1949. He first played Scrooge in 1901, after thousands of theatrical performances he filmed the first version as a silent in 1913. Later in 1935 this sound version. Scrooge and Hicks were inextricably linked for decades, it's a shame he has been surpassed & largely forgotten. I still appreciate this version and watching the actor who arguably most embodied this iconic character & for many generations he WAS Scrooge.
Thank you for this very interesting information. I’ve just seen this version for the first time & it’s looks really good. As you’ve so beautifully put it, Sir Seymour Hicks WAS Scrooge for a few generations & yet very few people have seen or know of it. I’ll save it till closer to Christmas before watching.
It's July 2021 and I'm watching scrooge. I watched this as a child with my mom every Christmas Eve and now that she has passed I watched for the first time since then and I'm crying like a baby. Thank you for the memories.
Sir Seymour Hicks(scrooge) performed thousands of shows on stage. Starting at age 9, then professionally by 16, he built a theater, produced, managed and was a writer as well. Quite a remarkable career.
This always reminds me of my favorite boss, David R.Ramage. If anyone knew how to keep Christmas, it was he. Mr. Ramage always shut down the print shop at noon and threw a grand Christmas party for his employees. Lots of delicious food and tons of beer and spirits. He would give each of us our paycheck and then another of equal amount for a gift. And because the other shops didn’t have a proper celebration, he would open the doors to everyone who wanted to attend. Everyone loved Mr. Ramage and I think about his kindness every year at this time. May his memory be a blessing. Thank you for everything, Boss.
"October 2021" Two months before Christmas. With the covid virus, many jobs lost, lives lost, many down personalities. As I go through Christmas Movies, this one touches my heart. It's the Spirit of Almighty God, as we know, that changes hearts.God changes scrooge's heart. I know that if I can help somebody as I pass along, then living shall not be in vain. MERRY CHRISTMAS. Love this classic.
just watched 1984 George C Scott, then 1970 Albert Finney renditions back to back. LOVE them. i guess this is on the tube for us tonight!!! thanks so much for making this available!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!!
My favorite part is always the end when he is loving and kind. When he goes around helping everyone. Sometimes I wish I was rich so I could do beautiful things for people❤️ but since I’m not I give with my kind words and actions. Money when I have it. That’s pretty rewarding in its self.
kids when they are young don't know or understand poor and rich,, they know and understand life as it is,, and the way it is ,, well that's normal,, They understand curling up in mom's lap is a warm, safe loving feeling, That's something a millionaire can't ever buy really. Being a caring, loving parent doesn't cost a thing but to the children it's wonderful thing that will stay with them forever,, They will grow and they will soon realise that some kids have these things that they can't have,, ie: special sneakers that cost a months rent to buy,, Great that some families can get them for there child,,,, but most can't.
Detective H absolutely. I love these old movies. They always make me feel better. Especially since they aren’t as violent or full of drama like they are nowadays. Or like the news is. Lol
Detective H yes same! I had to. My grandma was obsessed with it and she got depression and paranoia. We had to make her stop watching it too. She just couldn’t understand that most of the things on the news aren’t true and are rare happenings. That your mind reflects what you surround yourself with

When I was a little boy my mum read to my brother, sister and me every Christmas the story of Scrooge. She always explained that Scrooge was a horrible mean and selfish man but learnt the error of his ways and became a nice kind man in the end.
Of all of the versions of A Christmas Carol, this is the one I like best. It is well acted, well written and beautifully made with all the shadows only black and white can give. A piece of art. I watch it every year.

This one has the original music and superior acting that makes this one so real that you think you are there. The old black and white gives it that rustic old fashioned realistc scenery that really does send us back to that time period. There is no one like Sir Seymour Hicks and Donald Calthrop and Scrooges nephew!
I like the Alistair Sim 1951 version the best, but there is something about its dark lighting of 1930s movies like the horror movies made in that time that made this version the scariest Scrooge for me. When I was a kid the third spirit showing his Future scared me as much was The Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. It was well done and the ending giving Scrooge a second chance is always a favorite to see each Christmas.
Though I've not seen every version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, I'd wager it's the only one which ends with Scrooge going to a church service. How wonderful! Thank you for posting this lovely rendition.
Oneof the few classic stories where the story line is not altered. I love this atmospheric version which made me feel it was in Dickens London that Christmas. Can only be captured in black and white.
we used to watch this every Christmas eve with our mom while we wrapped santa presents once we came to know there was no santa. it was a special time with mom I will cherish forever
I believe we are all entitled to our opinion but to watch Mr. Sims play Scrooge is a Christmas present to all our senses. Just the way he delivers the lines with the British accent is a treat. Sorry I am American but no American can deliver the lines like Mr. Sims. He deserved an Oscar in my humble opinion.
You're talking about the Alastair Sim version. That version, and this one with Seymour Hicks, are the ones I grew up watching. Now, I watch them every year, along with the Albert Finney version. These three are my favorites. May you all have a Merry, Joyous and Loving Christmas, and, God Bless Us, Everyone!
@@veganleigh4817 the musical version with Albert Finney was the first version I ever saw. Saw at the movie theater when it came out…I had never heard of the story before (I was 9 years old). Like with many others, my favorite version is the 1951 Alastair Sim one.
I am a fan of every version of this story, from the original story, through Seymour Hicks, George C Scott and Patrick Stewart. And to think Charles Dickens was making it up as he went along, developing the story as he submitted each chapter to be published in the daily paper as a serial. Inspired writing, indeed. This may be why his original plan was for 3 nights but later changed to just one. But no matter -- the story is timeless.
This has always been my favorite Scrooge movie. The actors were on point and the story-line is super close to the book. It is so raw, creepy, and hilarious! Just as Dickens intended. Thank you, I love this one ever since I discovered it 10 yrs ago! It has it's own old appeal & was so well done despite what they had in special effects in 1935.
This is my first time seeing this version. I really enjoyed it and think Seymour Hicks made an amazing Scrooge. I agree with others that Donald Calthrop made a very memorable performance portraying Cratchit. Thank you for the upload!
Love this great telling of the festivetime classic Scrooge, and Seymour Hicks puts in a stellar performance as the cantankerous old miser , love the grainy old black and white film which gives it a charm and a warmth that is simply enchanting.

This is my favourite version of A Christmas Carol! Can you believe this film is 85 years old?!! (as of 2020) The thing that's special to me is that there were people alive who remember those days when this first hit theatres. This Scrooge is the genuine article. No updates here. Charles Dickens was steeped in a very real, harsh time, he wrote his truth and it's wonderful to see it portrayed in a most accurate manner.
Thank you for uploading this wonderful movie 🎥!!! During this time of year I always enjoy watching Christmas movies 🎄!!! I absolutely love the old, black & white movies, they're classics & never get old! I'd like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas 🎄! All the best for the upcoming year, love from Toronto Canada
Dickens had a talent for choosing marvellous names for people and this one, Scrooge, has gone done in history for all time as the name of a mean fool who was forced by an angel to see the error of his ways...
This is the very best. I was so glad to see it in a very clean form. I have always seen it on tv and very blurred. Thank You so much. The scene where the servants are at the rag merchant is so authentic.
I remember watching this version back in 1959. I was just 5 years old. My grandparents purchased themselves a TV as a gift to themselves for the Christmas holidays We didn't have a TV. So we went to their house for supper and a movie just before Christmas. I was memorized by it. Amazing how far technology has come in just 65 year's 🤣😅🤣😅😂🤣

Wonderful. A very moving version which looks so true to the time. It's as if the original sketches in the great book have come alive, you actually feel you are witnessing real events from that momentous period in the life of Charles Dickens - December 1843.
I see a piece of classics, I guess....filled with details and characters and dialogues played by brilliant actors... very convincing playing by Seymor Hicks... Charles Dickens would love it
A year on and I find a Christmas Carol I haven't seen before. This story about Christmas is one of my all time favourites all I need to watch now is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and my Christmas movies are complete
I love this movie in all of its versions & released eras. I see myself in all the characters (especially my shadow Scrooge self), but thankfully also in the many other virtuous and caring ones, embodied as the Spirit of Christmas. For me it glorifies & brings to life Christ who lives in me & others magnificently.
One of the more underrated productions of the story. Sure, there might be newer and better ones out there, but Seymour Hicks gives a wonderful performance.

Thank you, I love this one ever since I discovered it 10 yrs ago! It has it's own old appeal & was so well done despite what they had in special effects in 1935.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
Thanks for watching PizzaFLIX. May the Sauce be with you!
Watching this Movie for the very First Time ----- 22nd November 2020. From, U.K.
Desember 2020. Greetings from Russia! 🎄☃️❄️

Sir Seymore Hicks made this role popular on the London stage for many years. He also did a silent veraion that came out even earlier.
Thank you for this wonderful movie. Watched it in July and its still great!

It's the first time watching this particular version...loved it! :)
Best one I've seen😊
This is my favourite version of A Christmas Carol! Can you believe this film is 85 years old?!! (as of 2020) The thing that's special to me is that there were people alive who remember those days when this first hit theatres. This Scrooge is the genuine article. No updates here. Charles Dickens was steeped in a very real, harsh time, he wrote his truth and it's wonderful to see it portrayed in a most accurate manner.
Always liked this version very well put together for the time
LOVE this version!. ♥ Great actors and a great story! Merry Christmas to everyone in 2021!! Happy Holidays!
As kids we always ritually watch each Christmas this old version of Scrooge.
It’s Christmas Day 2021 and first I’ve seen this version!! Thank you so much.
Donald Calthrop is, by far, the best Cratchit on screen. His performance at 55:25 ff. still moves me to tears... 😢
A really nice print of a story that will ring true through the ages.
A timeless classic retold again and again but still doing what was done in the first one
Wa~ it’s gorgeous classic movie!
Thank you for let me see it
a Christmas tradition over three centuries now; and this is still the best film version yet
I remember watching this version back in 1959. I was just 5 years old. My grandparents purchased themselves a TV as a gift to themselves for the Christmas holidays
We didn't have a TV. So we went to their house for supper and a movie just before Christmas.
I was memorized by it.
Amazing how far technology has come in just 65 year's 🤣😅🤣😅😂🤣
I wish you a merry Christmas my beautiful lady with health and happiness it was my favorite movie of course I am much younger she had it 1 magazine her specific movie gift on dvd🎉💘☃️🎄🎈💒many greetings from Greece from the island of Santorini🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
Charles Dickens would love it
Lovely to see that toast to The Queen 😍 🇬🇧this has always been such a British story...it's very dark and atmospheric, gives you chills sometimes!
A year on and I find a Christmas Carol I haven't seen before. This story about Christmas is one of my all time favourites all I need to watch now is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and my Christmas movies are complete
There is something about old dark melancholic movies that just makes me feel good.
Same here. Merry Christmas to you. 🎄🎍🎁🍭🕊
I have watched all the Christmas Carol films made and I think that this is the best considering its great age! Made the year George V died!
I enjoy all versions. Every film adds something. Re: Alistair Sim; he was e was excellent in every film h
Merry Christmas 2020. 🎄❤🎅🎁🙏
The 2020 COVID Christmas may not be so merry for some... Here's hoping that Christmas 2021 will be normal and healthy for all.
@@kathil3347 Amen to that sister. And a very Merry Christmas. 🎄
Merry Christmas....and God Bless us ALL , EVERYONE!🙏💕
God Bless
Merry Christmas
This is the best one ever made. Thanks. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Superb! Encore! I simply enjoyed this version! Thank you Sooo much for finding this and sharing it with us! Merry Christmas everyone!!
Lessons that last for a lifetime... Family, Love, Faith and Hope...
One of the more underrated productions of the story. Sure, there might be newer and better ones out there, but Seymour Hicks gives a wonderful performance.
Excellent print of this wonderful old film. Thank you for posting.
I understand the character of Ebeneezer Scrounge! How years and years of sorrow, bitterness, and disappointment can turn person the way he is!
"My Lord - will you make your speech now, or will you let the ladies and gentlemen continue to enjoy themselves" - Classic!!!
This is the best version of a Christmas Carol . Merry Christmas everyone. And a safe healthy New Year . Praying 2021this horrible illness is gone , and everyone has a much better financial year 🙏🏻💜💙😊🎄🎅🏻
Very happy ending, I just love it! Merry Christmas to you all folks!
