to be fair, a lot of the fouls were very aggressive and dangerous. the first 2 fouls by the netherlands could have been red, maybe a bit harsh, but you couldn't complain too much about it, especially the second one. i'd say most of the fouls deserved a yellow (some even a red), but i'm not sure if the ref could have done anything to calm the teams down

The Dutch team had a dirty mindset from the start, and Portuguese teams historically get really riled up when things start going south, as was seen in this game and others that were not so violent, but had bad blood in other ways. Pretty sure that several Brazilian national teams would react in a similar fashion if they were in the place of Portugal in this game since there are some similarities in mindset in that regard.

Although ref Ivanov lost control of this match, it can be said that this is really the time when Van Bommel started overcompensating for his lack of defensive awareness, which then manager, Van Basten had already had problems with. So much so that Van Bommel left the national team while Van Basten was manager. This was also the era where ‘playing the ref’ reached epic heights. It was a messy and inconsistent match in all aspects. It was incredible to see the difference in the Nation’s league final, a very open and ‘clean’ match where football was actually played. And for that, Boulahrouz only got a yellow card, which was ridiculous. Raising your leg to waist level and kicking it around the waist and thigh of the opposition player, should immediately be a red card, period. This violent foul shows that the Dutch wanted to eliminate Cristiano from the very beginning because Cristiano was already, back then, the biggest threat to them and Portugal's biggest star. It's clear as day. And the Dutch managed to do it because Cristiano eventually had to leave the field very early in the first half, with an injury. So for me, everything that Portugal did afterwards was justified. It was the Dutch who started it, they eliminated Ronaldo due to a disgusting foul, so the Portuguese responded. The referee was at fault, he made a huge mistake - he should have immediately given Boulahrouz a red card for this disgusting attack on Ronaldo. It would be a clear signal to both teams that there would be no tolerance for any harsh fouls, and then neither team would make such a mess out of this match.

And for that, Boulahrouz only got a yellow card, which was ridiculous. Raising your leg to waist level and kicking it around the waist and thigh of the opposition player, should immediately be a red card, period. This violent foul shows that the Dutch wanted to eliminate Cristiano from the very beginning because Cristiano was already, back then, the biggest threat to them and Portugal's biggest star. It's clear as day. And the Dutch managed to do it because Cristiano eventually had to leave the field very early in the first half, with an injury. So for me, everything that Portugal did afterwards was justified. It was the Dutch who started it, they eliminated Ronaldo due to a disgusting foul, so the Portuguese responded.
The referee was at fault, he made a huge mistake - he should have immediately given Boulahrouz a red card for this disgusting attack on Ronaldo. It would be a clear signal to both teams that there would be no tolerance for any harsh fouls, and then neither team would make such a mess out of this match.
