- I've been seeing the movie Tár all over the anti woke part of social media. And I have to say those clips are very encouraging Cate Blanchette seems to completely and thoroughly dismantle woke politics with such grace that stuns you. I was intrigued right away, I wondered if the movie industry was finally waking up to the fact that so many people are tired of these woke ideas permeating entertainment so intensely, never allowing you space to breath. So I went ahead and watched Tár. And it's not what I expected, I wouldn't call it extremely woke but it's also not anti woke. There's certainly plenty of leftist themes throughout it and I think that each person will interpret it in different ways depending on what ideas are more prevalent in their mind. This my interpretation and the things I picked up on, I realize many people will have different perspectives and will likely disagree with me so I'd love to talk more about it in the comments.

I don't necessarily know if I agree with your take on the film, particular how Tar is framed.
(SPOILERS)
Obviously, the film is NOT putting Tar in a good light, as it frames her as a opportunistic groomer who uses her position of power over others to meet her own ends and then denies responsibility for the consequences (hence why she refused to take culpability for the circumstances surrounding Krista Taylor's suicide; it can be surmised she either had a relationship with Krista OR perhaps Krista rejected her and Tar blacklisted her because of it). The scene where she lambasts the student about identity politics I felt was meant to be ironic. At first, she states how one must separate a composer's personal life from their art but considering the actions that occur later on, this scene is recontextualized as her perhaps pushing down her own guilt. How she knows she has done unethical things and hopes she will not face consequences for them and/or her legacy will not be tarnished. But as we see, the exact opposite happens.
I would even argue the film is not "woke" in its traditional sense at all. If it were, I would have expected Tar to have been played by a man. But by putting a woman in the role, the idea of "it's a woman's world" is turned on its head, since Tar is shown to be just as unethical and devious as a woman. The film is almost being subversive, in that is frames Tar as a typical "girl boss" but then completely upends this idea after showing her true colors. And then there is the scene where she tackles Eliot. This did not seem at all like a "power" moment. Right before this, she was hiding pathetically in the toiler; she looks haggard and unkempt; her assault of Eliot is meant to be a moment of complete defeat and unhinged despair upon realizing her career is over and her legacy tarnished.
Macabre your comments are very interesting. However there are facts to support my theory of her being framed. I have now seen the movie 7 times. If you either have a copy of it rented whatever you have to freeze it and read the email and the titles of all the emails. There was something really wrong with Krista she did have a problem with her brain. Maybe she was bipolar? They didn't explain but she herself said I don't want to be like this I wish there was a pill I could take. The book that Krista left for tar she drew that Vector pattern design inside the book. She also put the same design below the metronome. That pattern was from their trip from the Amazon.. There is a scene when Lydia goes into Petra's bedroom and she hears the noise she turns and the child gasps and there is a shadow of Krista but it goes so quick you have to pause it to see it. At no time does Lydia do anything physically inappropriate with any of the young women that we see especially with Olga. It is Olga that kisses her hand . Yes Lydia does Grant favors for young women that she seems to be interested in however you just never see that actually play out like there's no evidence that she is doing anything. And just as easy as they were able to manipulate that video of her and Max to set her up... there is something going on between Francesca and Olga. I think before Olga shows up in the movie Francesca had teamed up with her to go against Tar. You have to read their text messages going back and forth. I think that Lydia was just lonely and bored. She had a horrible marriage there was no passion there whatsoever.

Totally wrong,,,she is a woman who has worked for her power and abused that power,,,,yes,,, but in no way can her abuse of power as men have,,, sexual abuse was not in her thoughts unlike men who use power for sex,,, but it does show that those who come to power can abuse it,,,, brilliant production
Have to disagree. This film has nothing to do with some "we don't need men" feminist agenda. Knut is a perfectly capable man heading the wind section, and most of the people Lydia Tar esteems are men. More of the central characters are women in the film, but that doesn't mean that men are being insulted. Lol.

expectations beget disappointment
For real! My ex-wife and I went to see "Life is Beautiful" years ago. On our way to the theater she told me it was about a "comedian who tells jokes to Nazis or something like that." Throughout the movie I kept wondering when he would do his comedy routine for the death camp guards. After the movie I asked my wife about her description. She clarified that Roberto Benigni was a comedian, not the character. Well, ok.
This isn't a movie review. It's written by someone admitting that they don't understand this kind of deeper story. Two biases frame the feedback: dislike of men and preference for fast-paced boilerplate movies that satisfy today's world of short, superficial attention spans.

This did not feel like a review
Well since no one asked. AS A musician I really liked some of the arguments, and are arguments even me and my classmates engage on. I see how its a hard movie, but something about the view of music Tár has just stuck with me. And I really love that.
I guess it depends on the person, I can see how my lack of musical knowledge totally affects my view of the movie

Movie didn’t spoon feed the audience and there’s a wall between you and main character as Field didn’t wanna give too much access to Lydia tar. Film’s slow pace is deliberate.. Most movie goes don’t like that, they hardly want to be engaged without being too involved, most if not everything needs to be laid out. It’s a bold filmmaking with tour de force performance at the centre. Props to Todd field making a film for audience who’ll eat it up and not to pander to those who won’t. Studio backing up project like this, is commendable.
EEAAO was okay movie, they contrived the plot in a way to draw out emotions (nothing wrong with that but that’s not bold filmmaking) to make it heartfelt. This film’s philosophical approaches such as absudism and nihilism came off superficial at best. I wish they had really dug into that instead of tying the ends together.
I agree with you. I think Tar doesn't appeal to concrete thinkers, audiences who aren't comfortable with uncertainty, or those who need to be spoon fed how to feel... I thought EEAAO was an overwrought mess, perhaps slightly redeemed by having a "fun" factor. EEAAO felt much longer and dragging than Tar to me, and much less impactful.
As much as I love EEAAO I agree that Tár is more challenging film that doesn't give you easy answers. The slow pace will obviously be divisive for many viewers but I found it engaging throughout.
It's a good thing you prefaced your commentary with, "I'm not a film critic."

Every review is made from the first person perspective. 24 years of Siskel and Ebert more than proved that. That doesn’t invalidate her observations. Interestingly enough you have subjectified your own comments with bias. I found her observations pretty legit as she touches on the anti woke part (separate the artist from the art bit) and recognized some of the films own personal agenda, which, to her, fell flat.
You’re right, this person completely missed the point, which was obvious to me from the moment she said the movie was slow paced for the sake of being slow paced. Yes it was slow, but I was engaged for every moment. There’s so much simmering beneath the surface. The events are presented objectively so the viewer can come to their own conclusions, and nothing is over-explained. It frustrates me to hear someone misreading such a well-made movie.
That said, I don’t think the “woke” student was set up for ridicule by the director. I raise an eyebrow at “pangender” because it’s not a term I’ve encountered often and seems purposefully obtuse (non-binary is a much more common, umbrella term and wouldn’t have stuck out as much), but the film is on the side of the student. Lydia Tar IS a huge bitch, and her behavior in that scene was incredibly unprofessional. She was singling out a student for disagreeing with her and could not let it go. Her ego needed her to “win” the conversation, and the student’s discomfort did not matter to her.
But to your point, no, this movie is absolutely not about men not being needed. That idea is so far off the film’s radar that I don’t know how she arrived at that conclusion. I guess it’s because, like you said, she had an axe to grind.
Took German in school and was chuffed to understand the parts without subtitles
Yes, and many now think that language and music and art classes should not be in school. Now that is sad.
I loved the use of German and the connection to Berlin.
i did not have to know anything about classical music to watch & understand this movie the renouned artist abusing their power is universal the only parts i didn't understand were the german parts bc i had no subtitles

The adagietto from Mahler's Fifth is one of my very favorite pieces of music; it almost unfailingly brings me to tears. Now I feel slightly icky about that. 😊
It is a really good movie! However it is a movie you need to see more than once because there's no way in one viewing you can get all the underlying themes that are running in the background. Now because you didn't mention it I'm going to assume that you missed this one underlying theme that there was from the very beginning to take them Lydia between the women Francesca and Krista but after Krista died they added another element Olga. You really should rent the movie at some point where you can slow down the scenes and re- watch certain ones because there's so much that is going on that you just have to see it multiple times.

I know you won't like to hear me say this, but as a fan, or rather a former fan of yours, I think you are focusing on the wrong thing. I personally see this movies message as life in general is more complicated then we would like to think. I do not believe that this movie is taking any specific standpoint whether it be that of the quote-unquote woke community, or the anti-woke community. I believe the real message of this film is that situations are far more complex and nuanced then we would like to admit and examine. Therefore I would strongly recommend that you take a little bit more time to re-examine your thoughts on this film. Judging by the comments section I would say I'm not the only one who feels that way. I mean no disrespect. I just think we should examine every situation and every person with the nuance and complexity that it deserves. Again I believe that was the whole point of the movie. But that was just my prospective. Among others. That doesn't make me right. It's just an observation. Much love. Namaste.
Couldn't wait to see this movie,,, I like you said thought,, OMG this is beyond me and I'm a movie addict literally,,,, just could not find anything in it for the first half hour as I do not appreciate classical music at all,, I respect it but it never moved me,,,so I went back to the beginning another day and I will have to say,,,it is an amazing production and must be watched when you are relaxed and calm,,it is not an anytime film,,, when I sat down in a calm place I was absolutely astounded at the genius of it,,,a woman abusing her power made me feel uncomfortable just the same as all the men who have abused their power,, that is what makes it unique and made me question,,,Do I separate the awful genius from the amazing art???

You're right, there are two different audiences for Tar and Everythig Everywhere. I'm older than you are and Tar is a film that was called recidivist in the NY Times review. response to it the way you responded to Everything Everywhere. I understand your losing patience with Tar because of you our lack of knowledge of classical music. Female conductor Marin Alsop decries the film politically but I find the film's everything, everywhere approach to its character's achievements and faults fascinating. And the Filipino ending a swift kick in the pants: a comic twist to a spiritual rebirth. The film is difficult in many ways and I think resolving personal feelings about it require several viewings and discussion.
as a musician, knowing all the works played, I thought it was a superficial hodgepodge going nowhere. The conducting motions were also contrived not reflective of the musical phrases, nuances and direction.
Really interesting to know the perspective of a musician, that's what I felt too, but couldn't be sure as I don't understand much about it and everyone seems to think this movie is the masterpiece of the year

Don't think this movie means what you think it means.
You're entitled of course to think badly of "woke culture". But the movie isn't taking a position either way on that. MeToo is just the backdrop for a great story about fame, ambition, pride, and self-delusion.
If this movie was going to be an anti-woke piece of propaganda, it would have made it much clearer that there was no substance to the allegations against Tar. Instead, it's never really clear whether she was guilty as alleged, but there is a sense that she made some poor decisions, to put it mildly.
The Male Conductor funds the Orchestra through charitable contributions. The old MAN mentor turns his back on Tar in the parking lot , before the violent attack on the MALE conductor. ... The power was taken away from Tar, quicker than it was given. The real power was allways with the Money,The male and female Board that represented the Institution and The Public .
Thank you for your thoughtful analysis, esp.for your end comments comparing this with "EEAAO" which I also feel is a far more meaningful, enduring, and imaginative film that keeps giving over & over long after having seen it. Plus, the entire cast was so remarkable throughout!

I think this was mostly of the message as an overall at how complicated society is: Also one thing that was the purpose of the film was to show that women in high power positions can also abuse their power, not just men as shown in many other films.

Just a regular, flakey woman with a great job, unlike the modern flakes whose entire persona is being "Hip, Happening, and With It!", rather than do the work, thus, the plethora of music-world jargon and insider comments are slights (microaggressions) to the hip spectators in the cinema. Mmmhhh, it's your opinion but the reaction of the viewers is different. No matter where you look, viewers gave it high ratings. Maybe you just don't understand what it's about. It's obviously the topics of the movie that trigger you. Maybe they exaggerated on purpose. I don't find this to be a credible critic as you don't understand what it is about.
This is a movie which is an example of current movies which only are interested in serving the act as Eagles making them look better and at the end that has nothing really to say and it's a it's because a lot of young people haven't gotten the idiom of movies so what you see is a lot of preening and self-absorbed nonsense that's what this movie really is

@@ivillu Thank you right back. Personally, I found every moment of the film riveting -- nothing seemed slow or tedious at all. I bet that's because I'm older than you -- I could be completely wrong about that, but I have a feeling that being order changes the way you look at things, your expectations, insights into the character, etc. I'm not suggesting that being 54 y/o as of Jan 5th makes me some sort of wise guru. I'm as dumb as the next guy. But every moment of the film captured me completely. Anyway, the important thing is, I think your insights into the film's intentions and the character, etc., are spot-on, you showed me something I hadn't seen, and your other videos are gorgeously produced & edited, and filled with fresh takes and solid insights. I love your vocal qualities, your honesty, and your truth. So happy I came across your good works. Keep it up!

The video clip, 14:53, Shows Tar trying to END the program promoting WOMEN. ... I think Tar percieved damage to her image if she battles WOMEN. ... The fight has become YOUNG women, versus OLDER women. Maybe , ALL younger women, versus Tar.
