The Bigger the Government... | 5 Minute Video

  • In every society throughout human history the following relationship has held true: as government grows, human freedom and happiness shrinks. Best selling author, Dennis Prager puts it this way: "The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen." This has been true in Europe for decades and is becoming ever more so in the United States. But it's not the kind of nation, the Founding Fathers had in mind. Can we get back to the principles of liberty and individual responsibility? It's a big challenge. But first we have to recognize the problem.

    Script:
    The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen. This is one of the most important realizations about society you will ever have. In fact, this understanding is the primary reason for America’s unique success as both a free and affluent society.
    Everything gets smaller as the government gets bigger. Liberty gets smaller, individuality gets smaller, goodness gets smaller, and human character gets smaller. This is not a political point on behalf of a political party. It is simply an observable fact. And it’s just common sense.
    Now, no one denies that government can and must do certain things. There’s plenty for government to do. It’s the government that must protect us from foreign attacks. That’s why we have armed forces. It’s the government that must protect us from criminals within our country. That’s why we have police. Likewise fire departments and courts are obviously necessary government institutions. And, yes, when all else fails -- private and religious-based charities, families, friends -- then, too, the government must be there to provide a safety net of last resort. But it must always be “of last resort.” When government is the first resort -- the first place citizens look when they have a problem -- bad things happen.
    As government grows almost everything else begins to disappear.
    The first thing that goes when government gets bigger than it needs to be is goodness. Yes, goodness. As the state gets bigger, people simply do less good for their fellow citizens. After all, why help others when the government will do it for you?
    This is the reason that, as noted by the international non-profit organization, Charities Aid Foundation, and shown in study after study, Americans give more charity and volunteer more time to help others than do Europeans, not to mention just about everybody else in the world.
    From the beginning, Americans understood that government must be small and therefore individuals must devote time and money to helping others, as well as non-governmental institutions of goodness, they have to be large and plentiful.
    Europeans, on the other hand, with their philosophy of big government, came to rely on the state to help their fellow citizens -- and even their own family members.

    If you want to see a perfect example of the sense of entitlement, simple look at nonprofit hospitals. My wife deals with people every day with 'entitled' people. These people are so demanding, they act like they are royalty, and everyone else are nothing more than servants. They are so used to receiving free things, they don't even think about it anymore. In their mind they think "If I want it, I deserve it and you will give it to me!” Give me, give me, give me, free, free, free, I want, I want, I want, etc… There is a stark contrast between ‘entitled’ people and people who work for what they have. It is a stark contrast in the way people treat the nursing staff and what they expect from the hospital, plus their attitudes overall. The ‘entitled’ people rarely leave a positive review, because they always feel they are not getting enough. The positive reviews come from the people who do not feel they are entitled.

      SteakOnSpear Also it is not that Norway, Sweden or Denmark are in a deep crisis financially or that people are not free in those countries. I would say that it is just a different mindset. Both systems can work well together. However, it is the mentality of the people that allows them to work! If everyone in Denmark would be sitting on their hands the system would not work and if the US government wouldn't provide some sort of social security, plenty of people would live terrible lives, which would cause riots and social unrest.
      It is true that the US a higher income discrepancy between the haves and have nots than plenty of european countries and it is also true that especially the nordic countries seems to do very well in terms of population happiness.

    Ok, I have been reading through this comment section, and I think it is high time someone set the record straight on what the term "conservative" actually means. "Conservative" is not a political party. We have a political party, the Republican party, that tends to have a higher conservative constituency than the other party in our bi-partisan system, but that does not mean that the terms "Republican" and "Conservative" are interchangeable.
    Also, the terms "Conservative" and "Christian" are not interchangeable either. Christianity is a religion that happens to push conservative values heavily, so there is a rather strong representation of Christians among conservatives, but this also does not make the two synonymous.
    What makes you a conservative is really quite simple.
    1. You place a heavy value on the family unit, believing in pair-bonding for life.
    2. You believe in fiscal responsibility and supporting yourself financially.
    3. You believe in small government and personal freedom.
    Point number three also extrapolates to a heavy emphasis on the free market due to the fact that every other economic system in existence requires the government to get involved. This is why it is ridiculous to see someone say that trickle down economics has anything to do with conservatism as it actually violates both #2 and #3 off of the above list. Trickle down economics may be a republican policy, but it is not a conservative policy.
    So, simple as that. Coservatism believes in a small government, liberalism believes in a big government. However, Conservative is not synonymous with Republican and Liberal is not synonymous with Democrat. There are quite a few liberal policies in the Republican party recently, and George Bush was a very liberal republican. There have also been some very Conservative Democrats, such as Bill Clinton. The sooner people can start separating these political parties from the common values held by a majority of that party's members, the sooner people can start discussing politics rationally.

    It's a natural tendency for a democratic society to become a big government. As the economy goes bad, there'd be political pressure from the people to the government to do something. Although free market is an ideal, but it requires patience for economy to fix itself and asking the congressmen to sit back and do nothing is not going to earn them votes.

    The one of the most important things this video did not mention is that although the US is not controlled by the government but is controlled by the corporations who control the government. Your freedom is pretty much controlled and dictated by the directions of the corporations that don't normally put the concerns and benefits of the people in first priority. In a capitalistic society, the only thing that corporations are concerned is the profitability which can be achieved at the expenses, misery and suffering of populations. This is the main reason, the capitalistic society wants to have less government control and more freedom for the corporations (not the general public) to do whatever they want freely and lawfully. That is the primary reason that more and more homeless people in the US while corporations are making more and more profits and wealth. The riches get richer while the poors get even poorer in the US and other capitalistic society. A good government is a government who is accountable and competent and who can work together with corporations in putting the concerns and benefits for the people and country as first priority.

    Isn't it obvious why a goverment would regulate how many hours you can keep your store open?
    Lets say I operated a store, next to another, and that other store decided to be open for even a single hour more every night past me. Lets say that I don't take that decision too. In that case he takes more of my customers for this one hour, gets more money than me and spends it to update his services to the point of monopoly. And what if I decide to work as much too? Then both of us loose hours that could be spent with our family, or doing other things. That's all. If we both stay late, it's not the kind of competition that makes better things, we all loose in the end.
    That's the kind of regulations that exist in Europe. Limiting freedom? How? By giving you more hours to be free to do what you want instead of working all day to make ends meet? I'd rather take that, thank you very much...

    • @stephans1990
      @stephans1990 9 лет назад +2

      Not completely true in practice. Extra opening hours do not necessarily increase profit but with greater liberty, stores will choose the opening hours that are most profitable to them.
      In my city in the Netherlands, there has been a experiment where store owners were allowed to keep their stores open for more hours a day (closing time shifted from 6PM to 8PM). But in practice, the only difference that it made was that stores now open two hours later.
      Same goes for the idea that stores can't open on Sundays. This is done (so said) to protect store owners. But in reality, stores that are open on Sundays, generally make up for this on Mondays and Tuesdays so it makes no difference to them.

    • @georgecataloni4720

      Your value for how many hours of family time is good in conjunction with how much money you make, is an opinion. People value different things. Especially if a mom and pop store is owned by a couple who doesn't have children, or have older children that left home.

    • @TheThOdOr1s
      @TheThOdOr1s 9 лет назад

      Like every concervative, what you're saying is the what if argument. Thinking of extreme individual cases that represent a fraction of the population: " mom and pop store is owned by a couple who doesn't have children, or have older children that left home"
      But any reasonable goverment would cater the universal need of their citizens. And most citizens want to wark less, or at least work reasonably long shifts, so they can spend more time with their families. It's simple as that.
      Aand there can be compromises too. In some cases people can get permition to keep their stores open for longer, if all workers sign that they do want that, provided that they are payed more for their extra work and that they are not forcing other stores to keep up and compete.

    • @georgecataloni4720
      @georgecataloni4720 9 лет назад +2

      TheThOdOr1s Most people want something so everyone must be forced to be that way too? That's ridiculous. People who work hard don't just help themselves, they help everyone, because we're all consumers. The hardest working people get the most rewards, and the people who want to work less get less rewards, but presumably get rewarded in non-monetary ways. That's already fair, no need to change it!
      What you are doing is setting up a system where hard workers are prevented from working hard, thus societal growth is slowed.
      Just because it sounds nice to let crappy business owners and their workers have time off, doesn't make it right. If they want time off, they gotta spend some money and hire more workers. If they can't, then they clearly don't deserve to have their business. Let better business people take over and serve customers (and workers). Society will be better for it.

The collective big government of the European Union, and the development of many European nations’ governments, was because literally had to rebuild themselves. Cities like Paris, Berlin and London had been significantly destroyed by the war. Many nations, my own included, simply couldn’t have survived without many of the social programmes we still have in place. theodore roosevelt on why small government is bad:
    The difference between Mr. Wilson and myself is fundamental. The other day in a speech at Sioux Falls, Mr. Wilson stated his position when he said that the history of government, the history of liberty, was the history of the limitation of governmental power. This is true as an academic statement of history in the past. It is not true as a statement affecting the present. It is true of the history of medieval Europe. It is not true of the history of 20th Century America.
    In the days when all governmental power existed exclusively in the King or in the baronage, and when the people had no shred of that power in their own hand, then it undoubtedly was true that the history of liberty was the history of the limitation of the governmental power of the outsiders who possessed that power. But today, the people have actually or potentially the entire governmental power. It is theirs to use and to exercise if they choose to use and to exercise it. It offers the only adequate instrument with which they can work for the betterment, for the uplifting, of the masses of our people.
    The liberty of which Mr. Wilson speaks today means merely the liberty of some great trust magnate to do that which he is not entitled to do. It means merely the liberty of some factory owner to work haggard women over hours for under pay and himself to pocket the proceeds. It means the liberty of the factory owner who crowds his operatives into some crazy deathtrap on a top floor, where if fire starts the slaughter is immense. It means the liberty of the big factory owner who is conscienceless and unscrupulous, to work his men and women under conditions which eat into their lives like an acid. It means the liberty of even less conscientious factory owners to make their money out of the toil, the labor, of little children. Men of this stamp are the men whose liberty would be preserved by Mr. Wilson. Men of this stamp are the men whose liberty would be preserved by the limitation of governmental power.
    We propose, on the contrary, to extend governmental power in order to secure the liberty of the wage-workers, of the men and women who toil in industry, to save the liberty of the oppressed from the oppressor. Mr. Wilson stands for the liberty of the oppressor to oppress; we stand for the limitation of his liberty thus to oppress those who are weaker than himself.

If a man favors the right abortion he will fight to grant it even if he knows a lot of people desagree with him (and vice versa). That's why, in a democratic system, those with more resources and more "selling skills" will always find a way to impose their views, even if their numbers are low. So if you think you are being protected by the fact that you live in a democracy, be sure never to cross the ones who's ideas prevail at any time. If you are on the side of the strong and popular, sit back and relax. If you are on the side of the weak and unpopular, you will suffer even if they all are forced to recognize you were right all along;

Many people in the world don't use their brain very well. People need to start thinking for themselves and start doing extensive research. People also need to learn the difference between a government system and a political system. Under a Fascism, which is a political system. There are rights to private property and owning business. You can also have a big business as well, but if your business becomes too big. The government can step in and make sure you're not becoming too powerful, breaking the law, and exploiting workers. A lot of ignorant people who don't know anything about Fascism love to misuse and over use the term. Many of them use a fake Benito Mussolini quote that says Fascism is the merger of state and corporate power. It is not. I wonder, have these people ever heard of something called Crony Capitalism? Probably not by the looks of it. That doesn't make sense anyways because Fascism doesn't allow corporations in it's society.

      And this is why I will never throw in with any party or organization that espouses extreme libertarianism or anarcho-capitalism, because I cannot take seriously the notion that there is no place for the state or the nation.
      What do we do about the common defense? To include defense of the public from common criminals? And national interests abroad? What do we do about public health? By which I mean plague prevention, not socialized medicine.
      Provide me some answers to these questions that aren't laughable, and I might begin to take the anarcho-capitalists seriously.

      Defense is provided by military insurance as required in mortgage and loan contracts, similar to hazard insurance. Only people who pay cash for houses, skyscrapers, and factories are free-riders - a very small percentage. People who do not get their plague shots can be excluded from any establishment. It's in their best interest to be immunized. Read the book (or see RUclips video) "The Machinery of Freedom" for a deeper explanation, also "Chaos Theory".

      ***** I presume there would be various PMCs competing for the contracts to protect various regions or even prominent persons? Why do you think this would be more effective than, and therefore preferable to, a state-controlled and taxpayer-supported military force?
      "It's in their best interest to be immunized," and this is why I don't like libertarianism. It assumes humans are fundamentally rational actors, when we are anything but. It also reduces all human relations to economic interactions, essentially being Marxian in nature, therefore utopian, and I despise utopian ideologies. It removes things like altruism, honor, duty, citizenship, and love.
      I'll keep my ideology of strict constitutionalism, federalism, conservatism, and citizenship in a republic, I think, thank you.

    Big governments are bad? Thats a very big claim to make, considering the Scandinavian countries are doing quite well in their socialist economies with big governments. This video is Biased, big governments doesent always bring corruption, Denmark and New Zealand are the lowest in corruption, so get the facts straight,

    • @maxpower5452
      @maxpower5452 10 лет назад +13

      Scandinavian and European countries are undeniably different. But to say their economies are socialist is a stretch. Compared to America they have lower taxes and less stringent regulations. This helps give them economies strong enough to employ people which the government then taxes at very high rates to fund the sections of the country that are socialized. Everything hinges on those lower tax rates and subsidies for the areas that are harmed.
      It is also important to understand that while European countries have universal healthcare systems, in a country like America the government has put the burden of health on the private sector. A move that has resulted in larger government and more government spending in America than in European countries.
      Hell, Sweden even has some hospitals on the stock market. That would be considered free-market radicalism here in the states. They even have a more market oriented education system allowing for more choice with better results. Meanwhile the U.S. is stuck in a strict draconian method of education more closely resembling eastern European communist block countries from a few decades ago than anything else.

Then some prostitution is legalized but guess what, its also highly regulated, and the violence is monitored or eliminated from the equation through regulation. Of course if you are talking about smoking weed, who cares, it should be legalized, but I still wouldn't want kids smoking that stuff before/during/after school, their priorities should be learning and becoming a smart person instead of focusing on how to get stoned all the time with their buddies because they think its what cool kids do.

We need to fight for these things.

If they fail government has no responsibility to step in because once you let it in under any circumstance it will take over. Last resort is the back door of big government. Government has used the excuse of last resort, temporary/emergency power to take rights away from ppl on a permanent basis consistently throughout history. If you ever concede that government should have access to redistribution of wealth or power over redistribution of rights even as a last resort you undermine the whole american philosophy against big government.

    "The more rules, the less liberty".
    This only applies to the perspective of the capitalist. For example, holiday entitlement (a rule) allows workers a few weeks where they have the freedom to do as they please (often limited of course by shit wages) and do not have to surrender their liberty to the capitalist, as they do every working day. On the other hand, the capitalist does not have the freedom to make more profit by making the workers work every week of the year.
    As is mentioned in the video, in France and Germany, the store-owner (i.e. the capitalist) is limited to a certain amount of opening hours, which while is to the detriment of the owner, is to the benefit of workers. Clearly the makers of the video have no regard for the interests of mere wage slaves.

    • @IBUILTTHAT
      @IBUILTTHAT 9 лет назад +8

      Wage-Slaves?
      Who's forcing someone to do labor?
      The freedom is on both sides: 1. The store owner can keep his store open longer, hiring more people. 2. The individual can choose to work longer hours to improve their economic standing and then utilize the stores that are open late once said individual gets off work.
      The individual "Wage Slave" as you call them is free to leave the job at any time, and of course find a better job where they can work fewer hours.

    • @woodcake274
      @woodcake274 9 лет назад +6

      IBUILTTHAT Well in order to survive a wage labourer has to rent out their labour to a capitalist. Once the contract has been signed you have very little autonomy over your work. A capitalist business is basically just a centrally planned tyranny.
      It's a very similar concept to voluntary slavery which was at one time very common. Poor people had to sell themselves in order to get the subsistence that was owned by the wealthy. Difference now being that you only sell yourself temporarily.

    • @IBUILTTHAT
      @IBUILTTHAT 9 лет назад

      Um....you can quit? Unless you live in soviet russia, where job quits you.
      "little autonomy" duh, you're getting paid to do such things. "In order to survive" anyone can live on welfare, it sucks, but that's what happens when you don't work.
      Look at it the other way around, why should somebody else pay for said "wage slave" to do nothing? Would you?

    • @woodcake274
      @woodcake274 9 лет назад +4

      IBUILTTHAT Welfare isn't common in developing countries - so you quit, you die and in developed countries for most it's just a choice between taking a paltry amount of money with the stigma of claiming benefits or a slightly less paltry amount of money for a shitty job. I don't know where you're from but here in the UK hundreds of people will apply to one minimum wage job. You can't seriously be suggesting that workers have the same bargaining power as capitalists...
      I wouldn't pay anyone. If I set up a business it would be owned by all the workers and decisions would be made democratically.

    • @woodcake274

      Abba Okoro "This makes me question your country's education system."
      I didn't learn any economics at school, I've had to study on my own (including time stolen from my capitalist oppressors at work). Bourgeois education systems are set up to condition people into accepting the status quo and accept that we are better off being governed by powerful elites - which is probably why politics and economics are taught at elitist private schools. You have a lot to learn it seems.
      "For one forcing business to work a few weeks out of a year, forces them to pay low so they can stay open."
      That's why the labour movement simultaneously fought for higher wages.
      As for force, well, if you think that land and capital remains highly concentrated in a few hands because starving people are just being nice, then there is no hope for you sir.
      I'd like to know you're thoughts on voluntary slavery, by your logic it is a perfectly free and acceptable concept. A perfectly free and legitimate transaction between buyer and seller.

China's fast growing economy doesn't necessarily have anything to do with big government, it's because they make everything and the Chinese have an incredible work ethic. Their country is almost like a company in that it uses capitalism from a global prospective. U British?

    I thought university lectures are meant to be factual because a lot of this seems to be opinion. In academia we are all taught to give sources and back up any points with evidence and approach any science, even social sciences with as little bias as possible. I find it weird this seemingly intelligent person is letting the emotion of patriotism influence his 'lecture'
    .

      Dustin D political philosophy is supposed to be a little bit more meaningful and backed up than this, this just seems like plain propaganda "I'm telling this, this is the truth, believe this, because I say it, and because it hopefully it appeals to you."

    • @Draconis-hs8bo

      +Lars L Considering that not only has evolution not been definitively proven, and also, eventually, denied by the man who made it a THEORY (which it still is, not a scientific law or anything else like that), your point is lacking at best.

    • @RuerlKhan
      @RuerlKhan 8 лет назад +9

      +Kevin Whitehurst You are aware that the word "theory" has a different meaning in science than it does in everyday speech right? See also "Einsteins theory of general relativity" or "The theory of gravity" both of those are mathematically proven and are still theories *scientific* theories.
      Secondly, Darwin never denied it, thats just a popular myth, one that was thoroughly researched and debunked in the cambridge published "Galileo goes to jail - and other myths about science and religion" (Red. Numbers. Cambridge university press 2009, p.142-151).
      Thirdly, even should Darwin have rejected it in the end (wich he did not) then it would in no way shape or form take from the validity of evolution given that it is based on facts and nothing in modern medecine or our understanding of the world makes sense without using evolution.
      Oh of course, you can claim "god did it" in wich case i'll ask wich of the more than eight thousand gods who has been worshipped did it. The guy that gave birth to himself through a virgin so that he could forgive us for our sins who happened because a woman who was made out of the rib of a guy ate an apple on behalf of a talking reptile?
      That guy? Right thought so. Your in the looney bin, but you gave me entertainment today and demonstrates perfectly fine why the US is falling behind economically: Your letting nutcases influence your schools and you are a perfect example of the failure of the american education.

    • @sergionj93

      AdeToz Biprtisanship works. I can disprove conservatism as non-flawless with easy examples. 1- Conservatism illogically limits homosexuals from getting married. I'm not talking about adoption rights or anything else. Just simply saying on paper "I'm married to this person." 2- Trickle-down economics does not work. Austrian economics (which is also conservative) does however work. Trickle down opens the gates for oligarchic plutocracies which is already what's somewhat occurring in this nation. But the thing is in American politics, conservatives tend to favor trickle down which is retarded. They should just go for Austrian which is more logical. 3- Increasing military spending on a defense sector that already gets $600 billion a year is ridiculous. I can go on and on and on. I can also go on and on and on about stupid liberal democrat hippies. Both sides in this country are full of shit which is why I declare myself independent. I just go with what actually makes sense.

    • @sergionj93
      @sergionj93 9 лет назад +5

      AdeToz LMFAO you don't know what "trickle-down" economics is and you think you can have a political discussion. You're a joke. That's like somebody who thought the Yankees was Delaware's basketball team believes they have a right in having a discussion about sports LMFAO. Go to school kid. Trickle-down economics is a basic 101 concept you learn. If you don't know this, you really shouldn't open your mouth

      AdeToz Oh and way to go with suggesting that we continue to expand our imperialistic military throughout the world. I mean that's totally not why groups like Al-Qaeda formed in the first place. I'm not saying we deserved 9/11, but people like you need to wake up to the fact that the anti-American attitude arose from our greed in other parts of the world. Of course, killing 3,000 innocent people wasn't the right thing to do, but you as an "intellectual" should know that they didn't just wake up one day and say "Hey guys, let's fly some planes into NYC skyscrapers just for shits and giggles"

      Sergio Obando hello loyal dhimmi of Islam, they hate us because we are not Muslims plain and simple.
      Have you noticed that more Muslims die at the hand of other Muslims than at the hand of any western forces? Did you know that this fact has nothing to do with America or Israel's foreign policy.
      Did you know that the slaughtering of Islam claimed the lives of 60 to 80 million Hindus when Islam was ruling India? Did you know that Islam since it's inception has claimed approx 270 million lives and counting?
      Did you know that more Europeans died at the hand of Islam in Spain, France and South East Europe than Muslims died at the hand of Europeans?
      Did you know that my fellow Nigerians who are Christians and have nothing to do with America foreign policy die in the thousands every year at the hands of Muslim Jihadist? did you know that Buddhists in Thailand and South East Asia with no middle Eastern foreign policy are suffering from Muslim jihadist also? Did you know that the Hindus in India have the same problem also?
      Did you know that a dhimi such as yourself is a Muslim apologist who keeps blaming the West for the clear fault of Muslims and Islamic barbarism that started and hasn't stopped for 1400 years?
      Did you know that the command of Islam in force today is to bring the entire world under Sharia?
      Now please look up those facts. The world will be a much better place when ignorance is dispelled. Thank you.

    In the Netherlands, when you give someone that is on welfare a bag of groceries, the person on welfare have to tell the local government of what amount they got this 'gift' and next month this amount will be deducted of their money. When older people (pension age) cook for eachother more than 2 days a week, the government sees that as a form of living together and money will be taken from them. When you let a homeless person (working people!! - the number of those have doubled in the last year) sleep on your couch, the government sees that as subletting - which is not allowed - and you can loose your house or... again: money. No joke
