In Japan, many of the Super Go-Bots (the ones with the tops of the cars becoming the heads) were part of Machine Robo DX, AKA ScaleRobo DX. Unlike most Machine Robo, who were indeed characters, these ones were meant to be piloted mecha. For some reason, this toy got released as a Big Machine Robo, larger Machine Robo meant to be "powered-up" versions of Machine Robo in the 600 series. For some reason, despite being meant to be a "powered-up" version of Trailer Robo (Road Ranger in Go-Bots), he looks nothing like him, and still has that "piloted mecha" look of the ScaleRobo. I suspect that Big Trailer Robo (Staks) was originally designed for ScaleRobo, but with the sub-line's cancelation, it was moved to Big Machine Robo instead. This toy would be repainted in black for Machine Robo: Battle Hackers as Thunderer.
I won Staks as a prize in second grade. Being into trucks at the time, I thought his alt mode was great. Still do. The robot mode is a little quirky, but that made it stand out compared to some of the other Go-Bot and G1 figures at the time.
The idea of the original TFs and Gobots was that you could trick and amaze your friends and parents since they wouldn’t guess that these perfectly normal looking toy cars etc were secretly robots. It’s still a fun idea, somebody should start making toys like that again.
Great review of Staks. As a kid, didn't watch too much of the GoBots was really into the TransFormers then but when I did watched my favorite GoBots we're Scooter, Turbo, and Leader one then others like Cy-kill and Dive Dive so those the ones I have now in my collection besides Cy-kill I don't really remember him from the GoBots, but he does look great.....
Staks is awesome! My fav trick when i was a kid was to put the door of the car carrier only loosely closed. Then click the buttons to drop the top, and whoever was on top would come barreling down and push down the door
I got Staks at one of my earlier birthday parties, and frankly, I didn't know nor care about the differences between the Transformers and Gobots toy lines at that time. This figure was great, and frankly felt even sturdier than my G1 Optimus Prime. Even today it still holds up.
One thing I always appreciated about Gobots over Transformers was the odd editions. Like the command center playset, their 1l2 gator 1/2 motorcycle attack beast Zod, the cap & water gun Gobots, bubble pipe, etc. Yes some things had just licensed the name & were bad products but the wacky overall banner of Gobots really swung for the fences to get sales & some things were just interesting to see.
It made sense to put more effort into the realism of alt-modes. After all, a robot _can_ look like anything. As for this toy in particular, I would prefer a Transformer of similar age and size but this is still pretty good. The way those wheels tuck away into the back is a particularly good move, and it deserves points for accessory storage.
Yeah, that was the rule back in the day. Alt mode first, robot second. Didn't work all the time, particularly as they started moving away from purely vehicles or household electronics and into animals and whatnot, but for the most part, that's how it should be. It should look exactly like a car, but then a robot that's made OUT of a car.
@@jamesdlin7 Weeelll...not gonna lie. That's what I'm into right now. I'm far more nostalgic for the shows than I am the toys themselves, so cartoon accuracy is what I'm looking for.
Given that the cartoon models were designed so they could be animated cheaply and quickly, I've never liked cartoon accuracy as an aim in toys. What would be cooler is 'box art accuracy'. :)
I don't care if people think GoBots were a cheap Transformers toy. I thought they were awesome and so much better in vehicle mode. And the transformation sequences were easier to do.
This is weird. I am about 94.7% certain that i did not have this as a kid in the 1980s, and yet it seems SUPER familiar. It's possible that a friend had it, but I only knew 3 other kids back then who had any significant number of Transformers or GoBots.
When I bought this guy on eBay there were a couple of listings that included a trailer, but they were more expensive and I never know what to do with trailers that come with my figures. :P
This was one of the better gobots. The heavy legs ment he could take a couple of impacts from other toys crashing into him before falling over. I always liked the head, very alien compared to all the others with their detailed but often all too small faces.
There were two versions of Staks: one with black plastic and short smokestacks like this one and one with blue plastic instead of black plastic and longer smokestacks. The trailers also came in two different types. One had black loading ramps, and the other had blue boarding ramps. The blue ramp trailer is much harder to come by.
I have a mint in box Super Leader-1 and Cy-kill and I still have an original Bug-Byte, though he's in somewhat rough shape. Staks is great though. I used to love putting him with Optimus as a pair of truck buddies, lol.
I had this one as a kid. I actually liked it better than some Transformers that I had that were just, Rear becomes feet, Front becomes chest, Doors become arms.
I loved GoBots, they weren't as good as Transformers but they came first and Leader One was my first transforming robot...GoBots were around for something like two years before transformers did in the US.
@@cowpuddles4851 same, remember endeavoring every day to be home by 3PM so I could watch GI Joe, Gobots, He-Man and Transformers...the latter being my all time favorite.
this guy is funny as displaying great potential. They made gobots toy 3rd party with nicer version crew members. If some of them would make Stacks, i'd be there to buy him
I never had Staks, but I kinda wish I did. Super Gobot-wise, I have (somewhere) Cy-Kill, Psycho (yes, you _should_ get him), Bug Bite, Baron von Joy, Spay-Cee (who's basically Galaxy Shuttle before Galaxy Shuttle was Galaxy Shuttle) and Throttle. I've actually been having some fun lately recreating a Gobot collection using modern Transformers, and customising them (though some have been straight repurposings because they're already dang near perfect for the job)...
Hasbro showed at BotCon 2015 that you can transform Combiner Wars Optimus Prime without transforming his head and you can have a modern figure of Staks.
in the GoBots STAKS video, the guy is not too sure which semi truck STAKS is,two of the more common long nosed semi trucks easily remembered are the Peterbilt, and Kenworth,Mack Trucks is another favorite seen on the highways,STAKS looks more like one of the Peterbilt long-nose models
I feel like Gobots lost in popularity to Transformers for a few reasons but most notably: 1) Gobots generally packed accessories like guns 2) Gobots had simpler transformations (often basically the same as other Gobots) 3) the Gobots cartoon felt like it was the dumber down kids version of transformers; in plots, animation & overall feel 4) the Super Gobots were hardly promoted, were seldom seen in the cartoon and packed heads. The lack of heads just was weird feeling/looking and while as an adult I like it way more as a kid I felt it made them seem incomplete or cheap. Had a 2nd wave of Super Gobots designs come out that had heads & were promoted more (assuming the completion got better) then Gobots might have been better competition & lasted longer.
It's been a few years but I think I remember getting him from Big Bad Toy Store back when Action Toys was still regularly releasing Machine Robo figures. Now, though, he might be tricky to track down.
It sad there was the new Machine Robo line done with more modern looks to them and I would of love to of seen Staks in that line, I also think with a little change and given a head it could be a cousin to Optimus and Magnus.
If GoBots went on longer it would’ve been great competition for Hasbro. Instead GoBots ending when it did, left Hasbro basically unchallenged, thus allowing them to become lazy and lead to them unfortunately giving us “Pretenders” lol
@RobsteinOne when was a kid, I would pretend he was ultra Magnus. My grandparents loved buying go-bots, lol. I had six or seven of the big ones like this.
3:30 In Japan, ACTION TOYS has given the Machine Robo line a sort of Masterpiece treatment, but I don't think it includes Staks. Edit: Nevermind, I see you already have Steam Robo from that line?
i used to have this guy too when i was a kid back in the 80s. when i play with him...um...that didn't come out right but whatever...to me, Staks was the little brother of Rhino... the semi truck from M.A.S.K.
Modern Gobots exist. It's called Machine Robo. There are both kid lines and the odd collector line. But you end up mentioning a bit on it. But not that some Super Gobots actually have proper heads.

Gobots are my retro line. Staks was one of the first pick ups! He just encapsulated the gobot charm so well
Parents bought 2 Staks for me and my brother to avoid the sharing issues. Also came with a car carrier that was blue.
Yeah, the car carrier was fantastic. Held a ton of the land-based Gobots.

If you look closely, Staks actually DOES have molded doors, they are just UNDER the sticker!
Staks is an Optimus Prime who never got ahead in life.
I, too, had Staks as a kid. And I would kill for an updated version.
Staks is a childhood fave he truck mode is fantastic and his transformation clean and fun
Love him
Staks is awesome! My fav trick when i was a kid was to put the door of the car carrier only loosely closed. Then click the buttons to drop the top, and whoever was on top would come barreling down and push down the door
I forgot about this one! I'm surprised how many Go-bots I had for my snobbery against them.

Also these toys were made as toys *first* without media to be slavishly beholden to. Nowadays most people seem to care only about cartoon accuracy. =/

Ah yes, Optimus Prime’s and Ratchet’s illegitimate child.

The head is charming because it looks like big eyes and it's better than one of those goofy robot faces that some of the gobots had.
It would work as a mech.
With little diaclone drivers in there

Yup I’d structure my paper route to be home in time! Such good times that went by too fast.
*SHAPEFORMERS* less than you'd expect!

Zeemon is pretty cool. I'd suggestion Dumper, Smallfoot, and my fav, Flip-Top.
Feel the same about its head, and I never had, (nor seen before) that bot ever.

GoBots Staks alt mode is either a mac or freightliner semi cab commonly used as a logging truck
According to GoBots wiki Staks is an Peterbilt 352H long-nosed semi-cab

One of my favorites was actually my Optimus Prime when I was young because I couldn’t get one
Staks was a great Gobot. I don't care what anyone thinks. Super Gobots Cykill was a great design and so was the Leader One Super Gobot.
Miss my Stacks one of Go Bots !

Don’t let Drax see you with GoBots. GoBots killed his cousin!
Makes me wonder if the original idea was to have super gobots like this as a sort of headmaster, with a human controller in the cockpit area.
I had a ton of the bigger Super GoBots with weird heads but I had like 6 Staks for some reason.
This one is Optimus Prime's distant cousin, Floptimus. 😉
Floptimus Crime
hahaha
More like uncle since he was out before optimus
I don't know why but that terrify me for some reasons...
and I bless my parents for not getting me this...
Had Staks too ❤
12:41 Where you get that Loco from?
It's been a few years but I think I remember getting him from Big Bad Toy Store back when Action Toys was still regularly releasing Machine Robo figures. Now, though, he might be tricky to track down.
I still liked gobots they were way cheaper so got alot of them for gifts from the older family members

I had this thing back when I was a young lad. I traded it to a friend, because I didn't like it very much.
He can't move his legs much except if Sttaks needs to go to the bathroom 😆
There totally is a Gobots Masterpiece equivalent line..its under Machine Robo , the Japanese name, they haven't done any super gobots yet
I’ve always wondered where “Staks” went after he was murdered by Tommy in the film Goodfellas……..
He turned into a Go-Bot……A fate worse than death?
Mom: "We have Optimus Prime at home"
As a kid I had him, & his trailer. I used to haul my matchbox, & hot wheels cars with his trailer. Unfortunately he got stolen from me.
Oh no, that's horrible!
Looks more like early 80s Mack Truck . Cat is an engine type didn't become a truck brand till late 2010s
And those are knockoffs of International trucks anyway
You're missing the trailer on Staks.
Edit, never mind. This one doesn't have the blue feet so it's the first release without the trailer.

Staks is a Mack Superliner
It looks to me like there are molded door seams hiding under the stickers on the sides.

Cykill gobots for the win

Gobot with a gun.
He looks better than G1 Ironhide.
Staks leg transformation look a lot like g1 Trailbreakers leg transformation👍
I had this one
Tranforming truk=good
Dieast=good
Staks=good
It's a shame the head is so giant.

didn’t he come with a trailer that could haul other cars/gobots?
This one didn't but I guess some versions did?
In truck mode, compared to G1 optimus, Go - bots look better ijs...
If they hadn't invented the transformers this would have remained the most ignorant robot with a nice pilot in the cockpit telling him what to do 😂😂
There was a mention in your comments about his trailer. I went looking, and yes I had that too! huh! 😊
This guy is pretty charming, and the cab head works a lot better for me than Goldbug's.
He looks so doofy
No- bot
The leg on my Stacks did the same thing, it must have been a design flaw
If this was contemporary with the design of Ironhide and Ratchet, then I think those are some pretty presentable legs.
It was.
Staks is the very essence of Early 80s car robots.
gobots were so lame, sad and corny 😅😅😅
Super GoBots suck. There's a reason why the Transformers killed this toy line.
Just a better cartoon. Or do i have to remind you of Ironhide/ratchet all of the seekers and what ever brawn/outback was supposed to be?
I had Staks, can't remember the names but also a silver sports car and the tank...loved the tank. And of course with Staks, you lose 1 exhaust pipe then the other.
The two silver Super Go-Bots were Psycho and Baron Von Joy, and I *think* the tank was named Destroyer?
