By spending more time with the children, he realizes how wrong he was. A realization that I think should've been in the film. I love how much personality the drone has and how it handles being "dumped" much like a human would, that was really clever. As for Wish, I can't see myself watching it at the cinema, I'll probably end up streaming it online or something
I love that everyone's responding to this movie's sincerity; it just oozes it. I could tell from the trailers that it wouldnt be a normal Adam Sandler flick and it did not disappoint
And to think after Eight Crazy Nights was the worst animated movie what Adam Sandler made, i was surprised that Leo won me over. That lucky S.O.B finally did it!!!
Well if we wanna be technical, Disney's actual 100th anniversary celebreation is Once Upon a Studio, an actually good product that has heart and reverance for the artists of Disney.
This film is the definition of "Subverting Expectation's" While not mind blowing in any way it has heart and, well, it's just a fun kids movie with a solid, universal message . Doesn't try too be anything more than that
I think the “bad parts” of the film are all the ones where they clearly try something high energy for the kids, like the part in the finale with the turtle on the drone. However this movie does have its moments and some where it is genuinely funny. Like the idea that the pets can’t do basic addition and subtraction, because they have been stuck in fifth grade where they leave multiplication and division, which is much harder, is genuinely funny
My sister was playing this on her TV and I genuinely thought that she had put on Eight Crazy Nights _every time_ I heard Leo's voice until I actually looked at the screen.
This was cute. I loved the bickering between Leo and Squirtle. And it is poignant since it make people wonder what they should do if they don’t have enough time left.
Saw this movie just as a thing to put on with my nephews but just hearing the dialogue in the first minutes got me interested then laughing as it kept being funny. It was a fun time to watch and I'll definitely see it again soon
“Find your Leo” that line got to me man. Genuinely the best Adam Sandler animated movie in terms of heart. It felt like he saw how hard it was for his kids and their friends to talk to people so they made the movie to help.
You know, I feel like the internet has made me so suspicious and cynical of all adults' motives for helping kids. It was honestly very refreshing to a see a grandfather figure who was really trying to make a difference in these kids' lives by taking an active interest in helping them explore, cope with, and even grow from their fears. Like, it's somewhat simple but so effective as an animation because what's so intimidating about a lizard? You are able to focus on an old character who is just trying to help children as a result. It made me even realize a few things that I need to watch out as a parent myself so that my own child doesn't feel like they have to bottle up all their fears in front of me either.
I watched part of this movie while having a horrible fever. Throughout the day I couldn’t do ANYTHING because my head hurt so badly yet this film was just SO amazing😅
I was worried at the beginning, going in completely blind, but I was very surprised by it. The lesson to treat kids like human beings and take their problems seriously was one I didn't anticipate, and it's so interesting and refreshing to see coming from the perspective of the older character who doesn't take kids seriously rather than a kid who isn't being taken seriously. I actually quite love the scene where the kid explains to him that crying is good. I think you missed the point; it wasn't that Leo couldn't teach her, but she just so happened to be able to teach herself. It was that she was always capable of teaching herself, and didn't need a lesson. She just needed someone to spend quality time with her. I think it's a wonderful inclusion.
I was expecting an adventure where Leo does escape but realize hes most comfortable where hes always been, one of those "dont take what you have for granted.". But making him grow to love the kids was a fun twist
The dont cry scene was genius. It showed Leo was fallible and not perfect and learn from her in a way as he learn to cry himself in the end of the film if you remember.
Adam Sandler is one of those guys who absolutely has potential to be a better regarded serious actor-like his acting in _Punch Drunk Love,_ which even his most vicious critics praised him for-but he has a comfort niche that he rarely ventures out of.
I love a movie showing that even kids today have problems and always will, and shows how they can be solved. It’s refreshing and gives me hope for future generations!
I think one reason this movie hits so hard is the fact adam sandler is a genuine family man and most likely has a soft spot for children due to the fact he is a father. I find some of his best writing moments to be when he focuses on family and unity.
8:51 I love this too! In my opinion I think this is how almost every adult feels. I’m 20 and I always wish I was a kid again and when Leo said that line it made me realize that as long as I’m still here living I’m okay :) This film I can relate to, not Wish XD
I really like the premise for this movie of the old class pet, going around helping students with their insecurities. It’s not done the best here, but I do hope it inspires someone else to make it again.
we picked this movie to watch while having lunch, we thought we don't really have to pay attention to it. it turned out to be so good, we just ate and watched, no coversations, no phone checkings whatsoever. this movie surprised me
Fun fact tuataras have a third eye on top of their heads it is only used for sensing light it's located right between the two main eyes in the middle of their head And also the tuatara is part of the 6 main group of reptiles 1. crocodilians 2. snakes 3. Lizards 4. Turtles and tortoises 5. Tuataras 6. Birds
So the crying scene I honestly believed that Leo didn’t actually know that crying is sometimes a good thing. Especially with the beginning scene, it seemed like he and Squirtle were firm believers that “crying makes you weak.” So when the girl does end up explaining to Leo, he was happy to listen and eventually learned that it’s okay to cry. Leo even cries towards the end and reassures the same girl that crying did actually feel good.
I thought Big Daddy and Mr. Deeds were both funny while being balanced with heartfelt moments, but admittedly his best comedic work is long behind him.
And to think "Leo" is literally the 2nd movie where Adam Sandler voices a talking animal. Because the only other time he did that was when he voiced a talking monkey in Kevin James's "Zoo Keeper." And he used that exact same voice for the monkey as well.
A movie which had Sylvester Stalone as a Lion who is grateful to Kevin James's character for being the best zookeeper. Though I wish their were Kangaroos in that movie than we could have has Hugh Jackman as a Kangaroo at the Zoo
Yo I didn't realise Leo was a Tuatara. And that Steve pronounced it properly. Tuatara's are native to NZ and are similar to Crocodiles, as their living dinosaurs. And being a kiwi myself, I love this
I stumbled across this movie by complete accident one day while looking through netflix.. And it really did surprise me. Sure, it was cheesy with the constant and often unnecessary musical numbers, but its core and characters are solid. That's what really counts and no movie is ever gonna be perfect.
Imagine how embarising it is that a movie celebrating the 100th anniversary of the most successful animation studio is getting beaten by a "Singing Lizard Therapist".
14:25 He did, he was sincere about “crying is for weaklings.” Later when he cries he admits that she was right when she taught him about crying making you feel better.
There's only ONE animated movie out there that tops this - and a movie that Disney did not deserve. Also on Netflix by the way. The movie is called Nimona. Originally a Blue Sky Studios production, after Blue Sky closed, production on Nimona was cancelled all together. Netflix and Annapurna Pictures picked up the movie, teamed up with DNEG Animation to finish it up, and the finished product is something I think you'll enjoy, Steve. Really interested to hear your thoughts on it! EDIT: I am not going to argue with anybody's opinion. If somebody enjoys Leo more than Nimona, I can totally respect their opinion. It's their opinion, I can't change their minds.

I just watched this last night. Really surprised me how good it was! The kindergarteners had me giggling every time they were on screen. Cool that they picked a tuatara, one of the coolest reptiles! Basically unchanged since dinosaur times.
Actually, while the family the Tuatara belongs to (the Rhynchocephalians) does go all the way back to dinosaur times, the Tuatara itself is actually from the Miocene. It’s still cool. By the way, how did this school manage to find a New Zealand reptile for their pet?!
@@thatswhatshesaid2777 Today I learned a thing. Thanks! I was wondering that, too. Aren't tuataras specifically banned from being a pet? Must have been illegally gotten. o.o (or just bad research on the creator's end, lol)

I'm actually psyched that this movie is getting attention cuz my cousin (although a more minor character) voice acted in it and we watched it the day it came out just to see his character.
This movie was actually very funny and I almost cried at some points. I felt so many emotions while watching this. Sadness, anger (at the turtle), thankfulness (for the turtle) sadness, etc. great movie.
Adam was superb in the movie. You can understand its him speaking for the lizard and yet its so perfect like that is how an old lizard would speak if he could speak. Very well supported by the old teacher. I do not know who did the voice for her and the turtle. And the animation is good. Very well done.
I had randomly stumbled across this movie when finding something to watch, which admittedly I didn't even realize Adam Sandler was Leo (I'm not the best at recognizing actors lol), I wasnt expecting this to be a very quality movie, but it does have some genuinely good heartfelt moments and lessons. Though that scene where he repeatedly insulted the kid for crying, I genuinely felt attacked by that aha.. (I do be having some of that childhood trauma) Overall, I was surprised by how good this movie is
Sad fact: the Tuataras are actually the last surviving members of rhynchocephalia with most of them dying out at the end of the Cretaceous period along with the non-avian dinosaurs
“We are living in a reality where the “Adam Sandler Silly Talking-Lizard film”, is being praised higher than Disney’s 100th Anniversary Special film.” TOO Accurate!
Imagine being a hundred year old animation studio that has dominated the media for decades, only to be beaten by an Adam Sandler movie on your hundredth anniversary
I really enjoyed this film, I knew it would be interesting watching the first trailer. My only nitpick is I wish Leo WOULD have died in the end. I get it, it's a kids movie at its core, but I feel like if he had passed it would have tied a bow around several themes in the movie. The kids learning to move forward, Leo making an impact, Squirtle needing to take up the torch and thus becoming selfless. In a weird way I felt cheated with how it ended, but I also understand that it might be a little uncomfortable for kids if it ended that way. I'm really shocked that Adam Sandler was able to get me in my feels while being an arthritic talking reptile, but I guess there's new suprises every day!

I love how much personality the drone has and how it handles being "dumped" much like a human would, that was really clever. As for Wish, I can't see myself watching it at the cinema, I'll probably end up streaming it online or something
pirating disney movies is always morally correct
I love that everyone's responding to this movie's sincerity; it just oozes it. I could tell from the trailers that it wouldnt be a normal Adam Sandler flick and it did not disappoint
I can't believe a Adam Sandler movie was better than Disney's Wish that celebrated Walt Disney for 100 years... What kinda of world is this?
And to think after Eight Crazy Nights was the worst animated movie what Adam Sandler made, i was surprised that Leo won me over. That lucky S.O.B finally did it!!!
@@Ryowhosakazaki He truly did the impossible!!!
A world where Disney tries to cater to an audience that only exists on Tumblr.
Modern Disney celebrating Walt? That's sounds way out of brand for them.
@@Digger_TN Yeah it's kinda disappointing.
You know Disney is in some real sh*t when an Adam Sandler comedy of all things beats what's supposed to celebrate their 100th Anniversary.
Well if we wanna be technical, Disney's actual 100th anniversary celebreation is Once Upon a Studio, an actually good product that has heart and reverance for the artists of Disney.
Wouldn't be the first nor last time Netflix managed to outdo Disney with an animated movie
As a former Kindergarten teacher - this is accurate representation.
Obviously they weren't as ugly as the kindergarteners in this movie
@@williampulfer-melville8536mmm….
teacher getting pregnant mid sem is to true
the depiction of the kindergarteners as chaotic little pacmen is amazing
8:51 "Im just glad im still here" bro... that one sentence hits DEEP like REEEEEEEEEEEEAL DEEP
Leo felt like a movie that came out years ago and we’re all nostalgic for it.
Ok but the gag where squirtle tells the bully how baby turtles are made was genuinely hilarious
I stopped right in the 9:44 minute mark when you put the spoilers alert - gonna watch this. Thanks man! Hooked with the review, new sub here!!!
Finished the movie with my gf. Genuine laughs, thanks
The line "im just glad im still here" hit me very hard emotionally. I absolutely love this movie.
Ngl, Leo made me laugh more than I thought I would.
This movie was lovely, I was surprised when I first saw the trailer and how interesting it seemed. Glad it really kept up with the first impression :)
I love a movie showing that even kids today have problems and always will, and shows how they can be solved. It’s refreshing and gives me hope for future generations!
when they start listing the stereotypical kids so accurately (popular kid, nerd, funny kid, etc) it pulls soo many nostalgic school memories
I will forever remember that an Adam Sandler made me emotional
I think one reason this movie hits so hard is the fact adam sandler is a genuine family man and most likely has a soft spot for children due to the fact he is a father. I find some of his best writing moments to be when he focuses on family and unity.
His daughters voice the popular girl and the talkative girl
Eyyy I worked on this film! So happy to see everyone enjoy as much as we did while making it :) The whole team and animal logic is so proud ❤
8:51 I love this too! In my opinion I think this is how almost every adult feels. I’m 20 and I always wish I was a kid again and when Leo said that line it made me realize that as long as I’m still here living I’m okay :)
This film I can relate to, not Wish XD
I really like the premise for this movie of the old class pet, going around helping students with their insecurities. It’s not done the best here, but I do hope it inspires someone else to make it again.
we picked this movie to watch while having lunch, we thought we don't really have to pay attention to it.
it turned out to be so good, we just ate and watched, no coversations, no phone checkings whatsoever.
this movie surprised me
Puss n Boots: The Last Wish, Nimona, Leo, and soon The Boy and The Heron. Disney should take notice-these animated movies have absolutely OWNED them.
Fun fact tuataras have a third eye on top of their heads it is only used for sensing light it's located right between the two main eyes in the middle of their head
And also the tuatara is part of the 6 main group of reptiles
1. crocodilians
2. snakes
3. Lizards
4. Turtles and tortoises
5. Tuataras
6. Birds
So the crying scene
I honestly believed that Leo didn’t actually know that crying is sometimes a good thing.
Adam Sandler making something funny for once in his life is certainly a scientific anomaly.
hm, this statement calls for revision
He's done funny stuff. But he just prefers to fuck around when making movies.
That’s a little harsh dontcha think?
I thought Big Daddy and Mr. Deeds were both funny while being balanced with heartfelt moments, but admittedly his best comedic work is long behind him.
Bro really trying to say Happy Gilmore isn't funny
And being a kiwi myself, I love this
Pretty enjoyable movie seen this before everyone talked about it online
I stumbled across this movie by complete accident one day while looking through netflix.. And it really did surprise me. Sure, it was cheesy with the constant and often unnecessary musical numbers, but its core and characters are solid. That's what really counts and no movie is ever gonna be perfect.
11:12 that actually made me laugh so hard.
Imagine how embarising it is that a movie celebrating the 100th anniversary of the most successful animation studio is getting beaten by a "Singing Lizard Therapist".
It’s been my dream since I was a kid to be a teacher. The way they handle the poor substitute literally made me burst into tears. LOVED this movie.
Sandler's animated movies, especially the newer ones, hotel Transylvania and this one, have good lessons in them
Unbelievable, an animated movie from Hollywood's manchild is BETTER than Disney's 100 Year Anniversary movie.
From just that alone, I'm watching this.
How bout an original comment instead of copy and pasting everyone else 🙄🙄
@@JohnSmith-qg2bpIt’s slowly becoming the new “It’s Morbin time.”
14:25 He did, he was sincere about “crying is for weaklings.” Later when he cries he admits that she was right when she taught him about crying making you feel better.
As Adam Sandler, I can confirm I am indeed a chameleon.
I actually saw Nimona over the summer. It was so good.
ngl i liked Leo more than Nimona, but thats just my opinion
Are you forgetting the Boy and the Heron?
@@darwincityit has nothing to do with the current train if though, as it is not an occidental movie, neither a Netflix movie nor a Disney movie...
We are not comparing every recent animated movie
@@darwincity that doesnt count, Ghibli is in a league of its own that doesn't even count it as movies, its immediately a masterpiece
@@mistingwolf this lizard was taken in since 1949. It was likely gifted to the school or such ban didn’t exist yet and to return Leo back now would be terrible as they have lived in captivity for so long.
Hearing Leo's voice makes me want Adam Sandler guest star as Teddy's dad on Bobs Burgers
I saw this yesterday. what a gem.
this single movie taught me lessons I thought I already knew.
anyone who hasn't watched needs to watch it. 1000% recommend
2:30 oh, so they made him a tuatara specifically so to explain why the lizard is still alive
I quite enjoyed it. Some adult humor with family fun sprinkled in. The lullaby was a great laugh.
(I do be having some of that childhood trauma) Overall, I was surprised by how good this movie is
When they rhymed “Santa Clause” with “Menopause” in one song, that’s when I knew this was the best movie to ever exist.
This movie was surprisingly good I really enjoyed it. The movie is better than many modern Disney movies
I watched this the day it came out and was blown away. Ive made everyone around me watch it
Also if he were a 70+ year old iguana, he'd probably be nearly as big as the kids in his class as the males get pretty big and never stop growing.
The one parent (who mistakenly thought they only live to about 75) also specifically said Leo was a tuatara.
8:19 that cutaway make me laugh out loud during the movie.
Sad fact: the Tuataras are actually the last surviving members of rhynchocephalia with most of them dying out at the end of the Cretaceous period along with the non-avian dinosaurs
“We are living in a reality where the “Adam Sandler Silly Talking-Lizard film”, is being praised higher than Disney’s 100th Anniversary Special film.”
TOO Accurate!
Imagine being a hundred year old animation studio that has dominated the media for decades, only to be beaten by an Adam Sandler movie on your hundredth anniversary
I love the fact that the drone in this movie has so much character, it really could be friends with Wall-E
I loved this movie it was so funny and heart warming to the point where this feels more like a movie kids should watch instead of wish
I’m so glad that Leo surpassed Wish, and Adam Sandler is finally getting the appreciation he deserves
I'm glad Adam's back in something relatively decent - I think he has a surprising amount of depth, particularly in the heartfelt areas.
As a parent, this movie has so much rewatch potential and enjoyability. My daughter is obsessed with it. And I noticed another background gag each time I have to sit through it. 👍 A great movie 🍿
Not a ton can get me to have a sudden out loud burst of laughter but the cut to the drone in the bathrobe looking out the window absolutely got me 😭 I love the drone so much
Adam Sandler just comes out every 3 years, makes an absolute masterpiece and then disappears again
The textures and animation looks great
Honestly, and I know this actor’s known for “Advice Giving” characters, but could actually see Danny DeVito as Leo a lot more.
This just randomly appeared on my feed but I had to drop a sub cause I love how you covered it. Made me wanna give a watch even though I despise musicals. I wanna eventually write my own movies/tv stuff when I finish rapping and so I like studying stuff like this. The design they used for Leo actually makes him look cute and sympathetic, matches the weird voice Sandler chose. Things like that are weird little choices most people don't notice.
This is a movie I’ll definitely watch before Christmas great review as always Steve.
Just watched the movie it was really great.
Whenever I see a video of yours it makes my day more brilliant.
I completely recommend Code Lyoko next , Steve and what are your thoughts on the show?
For me it was a great show from my childhood and even today as an adult from the characters, the plot, the animation including in Lyoko and the music including the theme tune it never gets old 🙂
I liked the kids coming to their own conclusion and apologizing. It felt like character growth and the kids using what they had been taught from. Leo
I think the reason why this movie was favored more than Wish was because the story just felt DIFFERENT. Everything from Disney these days feels bland, lazy, and only made for profit with the same old plot.
First time I've stopped to avoid spoilers. This looks like such a great one. Thanks, Steve.
Will be back to finish after watching.
