      Agreed but did the PSP Memory Sticks half people either back in the day? No one bought them because they had a Sony cameras also on hand (that they were also compatible with) when using them for the PSP likely and the Vita yes the price and being exclusive memory cards.
      I won't deny they were an issue for sure though.
      The 1GB internal was something in the 2000 model but nothing 16GB PSP Go level that should have been included in either model Vita when phones offered that they did or the 3DS internal besides the SD card slot.
      Never was an issue for me as a late owner but I can understand the issues and did face it with the PSP apparently back in the day.
      I got lucky with a 1000 and a 16GB included but that's not everyone either coming across that. Especially not launch.
      To me the western audience didn't find games appealing enough and I can see why. It's why the Vita is more appealing to an anime games/visual novel/JRPG or kids games device than a western casual or hardcore audience with their favourite IPs on the go when many of them stopped appearing after a while or ones like Bioshock Vita didn't come out only a few types appearing in the first few years of the device. I like the Vita but I fit the Indie, Japanese games and controller gimmicks audiences.

    John, the PSP Go was ahead of it's time. Now is the time to bring that idea back because it can thrive. All they need to do is add wifi to that device, add a 500GB NVMe hard drive with room for expansion and let people play PS+ games and have the option to download any game available in the PS storefront INCLUDING PS5 titles. The PS5 titles would obviously be scaled down to run on it like the Steam Deck does with modern titles. What Sony should NOT do is have a handheld that has it's own games like the PS Vita, that would kill the device because we all know how Sony is about supporting their peripherals that aren't the main console. This thing would sell like crazy if they did that.

    Ngl… I feel like Sony would actually be LESS likely to revisit the handheld market now that there’s so much more competition in it. It would be different if it was still just Nintendo, but now Valve and Asus have jumped in as well. Sony usually plays things safe, I’d be shocked if they announced a successor to the Vita.

  • @matthewbarrios1028
    @matthewbarrios1028 Год назад +5

    The difference is that PC titles are designed to allow scalable settings. The XBSX/S and PS5 are not. They have to tailor the settings to get a streamlined experience. Adding another setting profile and optimization to a Sony Handheld is going to be WAY down on the list of priorities for these developers. Sony needs to stay where they are best. That is the PS5 and locking down anti competitive exclusive 3rd party deals.

    The price of the unit is what makes this unlikely.
    The steam deck already cost about the same as a next-gen console. (Or more) But you have the added bonus of the massive steam library. It doesn't make sense for Sony to charge you same price as a PS5 (or more), for something that only runs PlayStation games and not as well.

    • @krazycharlie
      @krazycharlie Год назад +1

      Sony could potentially justify whatever price they want to charge if and only if they get backwards compatibility right. After all, that's one of the main appealing factors of the Steam Deck: the amount of games that can be played on it, whether they're verified for it or if certain workarounds are needed.

    • @Real_Name_Redacted
      @Real_Name_Redacted Год назад +4

      Going with your classics idea, that's already a thing. You can use your PS plus account on the steam deck.
      Sony invested a crap ton of money to port games over to PC. And build a PC ecosystem. Even making sure their games are steam deck verified.
      Why would they gamble on building and stocking a $600 plus handheld to do something that they already are doing. (Allowing PS plus and native AAA games to run on PC handheld systems). They currently get all the benefits of portable gamers wanting to give Sony money, without having to RND a crazy expensive handheld that might be more than the PS5. (And risk another handheld failure).
      I mean anything is possible. And never say never. But it would be a weird financial gamble for them to do it.

  • @wastelander138

    Talking about the ROG Ally, it's useful to know that the Ally promises 50% more performance at 15W and 100% more performance at 35W compared to the Steam Deck (I'm assuming Steam Deck is capped to 15W in all tests).
    So realistically for the device to be portable (run for more than 40 mins on battery) and not be to loud, it's best to have it at or under 15-20W, just like the Steam Deck, so only up to 50-60% of Steam Deck performance.
    If you look at it from this side, Sony's portable console should have at least the same APU (or at least underlying GPU), as the ROG Ally, if not a better one, to have full FHD 30fps for all PS5 games.
    Edit: added clarification for portable device

    As I said, the only way that Sony could do this is if it has the capabilities of a PS4 to PS5 , they won’t be able to develop multiple games ( a console version and then a completely different portable version like the uncharted version for the vita) and we’ve seen third-party companies completely Ignore the switch even though it’s 100+ million unit seller. My only hope is that it won’t be this big monster like the steam deck. I love my steam deck, but I also very much miss smaller handhelds like the vita or PSP or even the 3DS. If they could make some thing with a 5 to 6 inch screen, that’s thin and sleek, and can play PS4 + level games. I'm totally down for a new handheld. Don't think there's a chance they would name it PSP or Vita 2. Whatever they do it's a must that they don't do proprietary memory cards and please don't make it more expensive than the PS5.
    I think that has doomed the PSVR 2. It can have the most awesome specs but when people see it's more expensive than the actual console... they're going to check tf out.

    A PS hand held that did a cross play with the Ps5 , but could also be a stand-alone would be a great idea, especially when it looks like we are in a recession. It doesn't make alienate the people who are just now getting the PS5 while giving the ones that have had the PS5 since launch something new. It would be great to be able to stop playing a game on the ps5 but then pick it back up somewhere else on a portable device that was playing the same game.

    As a proud owner of two PS Vitas, I would love if Sony got back into the handheld space. The PSP and the Vita were both premium-feeling devices that were ahead of their time, especially when it came to specs.
    I don't think Sony would be able to support a handheld if it is a traditional device with it's own dedicated games. They are already supporting PS5 and PSVR2 as well as porting games to PC. But, if it was possible to do what Jon is suggesting then that would be fantastic.
    I still think Sony considers streaming (both via Remote Play and a future PSNow mobile app) their answer to on the go gaming. But, with the Switch being such a runaway success, Sony may just decide to jump back into handhelds.

    I'm not sure why one of these companies doesn't use cloud gaming to make handheld games for mobile. No one wants to lug around another handheld device AND their phone. As a gaming company, it's better just to utilize the hardware everyone already has, like the PC market. Mobile gaming is awful. There's a big spot to fill, to have REAL gaming on our phones. There's big money there, but no one is filling the void. Use the hardware everyone already HAS.

    My biggest problem with Sony handhelds is that they feel as secondary complementary consoles; no numbered sequels, no big titles released on them, you had to have Sony main console in order to enjoy the meaty games. On the other hand Nintendo handheld feels like self-contained consoles. 3DS had exclusive numbered sequels like SMT4, Luigi's Mansion 2, MH3U, MH4, Bravely Default, Animal Crossing and more. If Sony releases a new handheld then for sure you'll need PS5 on top of it in order to fully enjoy. 3DS was a fantastic device and the Switch already blurred the line between home console and handheld. I don't see Sony succeeding unless their handheld is literally PS5 portable, in that case I'd gladly buy one.

I like consoles to have Physical games, I'm not a fan of all digital, I accept it on the Steam Deck because it's a portable PC, if Sony makes a Handheld, it would be a portable console and I like consoles to have Physical media. I know it's dying and I know a lot of games don't even come on the disc anyway, but I love Physical Media and I want it to stay around as long as possible.

      @@ukkev7290 I'm not sure to be honest, but the Switch does have cartridge sizes of up to 64GB, so Sony could use a similar technology to Nintendo. Since most physical games unfortunately don't include the full game on the disc/cartridge anyway, they could have a system where you have 60GB on the cartridge and then download the rest. My ideal Sony Handheld would not be a PS5 portable, it would be it's own thing like the PSP and Vita before it (incredibly unlikely, but I can dream). Since it would have it's own games and obviously wouldn't be as powerful as the PS5, hopefully game files could be smaller, as you wouldn't need 4K textures for games running on a 1080p screen. I definitely don't have a brilliant answer for how they could do it, It's just something I'd like to see in a new Handheld from Sony.

    I doubt that, the PSVR2 is struggling and unless Sony focus on it moving forward.. it can be a disaster. The handheld market is also very hot at the moment, companies dont like to invest on highly competitive markets. Even the Switch has strong competition, the Steam Deck is a huge success and the newly announced ASUS Rog Ally can be just as big. There are also cloud based handhelds like the Logitech and others. Assides from the Switch, people can play any PC/XBoX and PS games on these device, natively or through Game Pass/GeForce Now. Why would somebody buy a PS handheld to have a limited game catalog,iwhen they can already play everything on other devices? Its would be stupid!
    Not even XBoX is focused in a handheld, and they have a huge advantage on multiplatform development and unlike Playstation, a massive cloud gaming infra structure/service (Game Pass). They are letting others companies do the hardware so they can just supply the software/services

    but it would also mean, you have to buy another super expansive handheld maybe additional to your ps5 just to play on the go. I think this scenario has the same issue the steam deck has. usually you want to expand the range of games you can play so having a ps5 would make a ps5 handheld less interesting because you would be able to play the same games (and only the digital ones) but it would be far more expansive. if you buy a ps5 and a switch your range of games is far higher.
    Also like the steam deck, battery time likely very low (especially if you want to buy the playstation first party games), you would need a lot of flash storage on the device and very likely have to expand it via SD card, since a single AAA Sony game is already around 100+ GB.
    All those issues are also making me believe, whatever nintendo does next is not going to be in the same hardware power league than the steam deck.

Mortal Kombat on PSVITA was super fun, still game was so drastically different so I remember people didn't want to really play it on offer. Unless Sony does a complete 180 in regards to their handheld mindset, their better off leaving the portable market to others. While the Handheld market is hotter now than it probably ever has been in the past, there are tons of options, and not just Nintendo and cell phones at this point. Sony just slapping their name on a device, and creating their own memory card system just ain't gonna cut it in this day and age. They need a plan to elevate their option above the market, and an aggressive price to even give it a chance. The Vita should have walked hand in hand with the PS4, but they all but buried it in favor of the PS4. I just don't see them offering anything that would make a new device competitive in this current market. That's defeat the whole point of owning a handheld. It means you have to own a ps5 just to play on the handheld in a specific vicinity in which the ps5 is near around. Microsoft would likely acquire Valve sometime in the future to fix their PC gaming issue by letting Valve taking over that side of the business. But they will invest in Steam Deck and continue to let it be a open developer platform so all developers can profit from it.
