Replaced strut mount on Jeep Cherokee KL

  • I was experiencing a clunk when turning the wheel, on tight turns and certain other times. I thought it was because of the lift I installed and lived with it. When I had the Jeep in for a software update the dealer said I needed a new strut and "related components". Made sense that it would be the strut mount and that is exactly what ended up needing to be replaced. So I made a project out of it.
    Jeep did not make this strut to easily come out and replace. I did the strut mount replacement only on the driver's side. Some say to remove the knuckle, I instead went this route with the spring compressors. A hassle either way but the price was right.

    I'm replacing struts in my 2015 Trailhawk, and I'm also gonna do the mounts and bellows while at it to avoid future issues with the new parts causing strain on the old ones. They are not expensive parts as of Aug 2020. Paid about $200 for new struts, mounts with all the needed hardware and retainers, and bellows. The dealer wanted $900 to do the job.

    Hi Mark, just a suggestion, look for a pass through socket set, this way you will be able to align a hex tool into the center of the strut stem. Thanks for the video, much appreciated.

    Thanks for the video man! By any chance do you know the torque specs to the top strut nut? I’ve looked everywhere and can’t seem to find anything.

      Thanks I'm glad it helped. I don't know the torque specs either. I tightened it firmly and check on it once in a while. I think you would hear it if it ends up being too loose.

    Congratulations! Is it possible to remove the mount without compressing the spring? What do you think? Thank you!

      I think you would remove the control arm to do it without compressing the springs. More work but maybe easier.

    Do you remember what size and thread pitch nut you bought to replace the original one?

      I don't. I took what was left of the old one to the hardware store and found the replacement.

    Did you also get a rattling sound when driving over multiple small bumps and washboard roads?

      It's been a while and it is possible but I don't remember that being part of it.

    Why did u replace them?

    • @MarkFerdinandAuthor
      @MarkFerdinandAuthor  4 года назад +1

      The bearings in the mount went bad. There was a grinding coming from them during sharp turns.

    Is a wheel alignement required ?

    • @MarkFerdinandAuthor
      @MarkFerdinandAuthor  5 лет назад +1

      Most likely it is required. I didn't get one and don't notice any change.

      I had my 2017 Jeep Cherokee right side strut mount bearing replaced under warranty (56000KM) I explicitly asked my dealer if a wheel alignment was required, they told me "no". Having said that I really don't put too much faith in the dealerships here in Ontario. Hope this helps!! Good luck !!
