    There is a dude, who made a song which was going like "ichi juu hyaku sen, ichiman, juuman, hyakuman, senman..." That's why i know how to count in japanese 😁

    Fun fact: English used to have a word for 10,000 and you probably all know it. It's "myriad". It fell out of use and became a synonym of "plethora".
    Great vid as always! I'm still new to Japanese but numbers don't seem too hard compared to some other languages. :)

      @@stuart5236 Yep, and you can find that very word in all the Latin languages, as well as some of the Germanic languages. In all of them the meaning changed from 10,000 to "a lot". Most likely people back in the day didn't really count past 10,000 very often, so it made sense to have a word for it as well as using it to describe a large number of something (just like we'd say "I have a million things to do"). With bigger numbers becoming more common, the initial meaning became kind of useless and only its metaphorical one remained. Only a few Asian languages kept using 10,000 as a unit, as far as I'm aware.

      @misterwhyte I'd imagine another reason it fell out of fashion is because it feels sort of anomalous in English counting, since unlike Asian languages, since any number past 100 we group by 3 before making a new name

    this is probably the best channel for learning Japanese! I'm glad it's growing faster then ever!!! I have been here since near the beginning, and just have been watching her grow and grow, her channel growing by the second! I cannot express a better "thank you" to her, other then "Arigatou gozaimasu! Gozaimasu Sayaka Sensei!!!" She has done so much to help me learn, in fact, about 89% of my knowledge of Japanese comes from her, おめでとうございまさ!

    That’s only about memorizing pronunciations for Chinese Japanese learners, cuz we use exactly the same counting system and even literally the same Kanji if u are Taiwanese using traditional Chinese characters.

      I've never heard anyone say latin numerals LOL.

      Latin numerals (Roman numerals) are entirely different. They represent numbers with Latin letters. I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X. If someone is saying Latin numerals for 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 they are miseducated.

    Japanese guy living in Europe here. Imagine meeting English counting system after spending over 25 years in Japan. It was quite tough to get used to count especially more than 1,000😂

      @@bewooyall It isnt that much more complicated, the only difference is that in japanese you group 4 digets instead of 3

      @@bewooyall English is just as complicated! You have to learn unnecessary words like "eleven", "twelve", ... or "twenty", "thirty", ... etc. which you don't need in Japanese because you just say "ten-one", "ten-two", ... and "two-ten", "three-ten" etc. So, overall Japanese is not significantly more complicated compared to English!

    I remember when first learning Japanese finding it pretty fascinating that there would be a distinct word for "tenthousand" and that you would count from there (Making a million "100 tenthousands"), just because it highlighted something you would never think of. Where you make those divisions is completely arbitrary. Fun perspective changing moment.
    Still very tricky to change your way of approaching numbers though, and it's easy to zone out when someone is saying a long number.

    What I'm understand and is helping ME is to accept how japanese is wit out reasoning or question why it's like it has it's quirky ways .
    And your detailed explanation and simple way is superb for some one like me ( suffer dixlexyia and covid 19 had made it worse as well as other issues daman made virus )

    Actually Japanese numbers are really easy to learn! I was so surprised because they are so easy to learn! It’s perfect for beginners who are learning Japanese, just like me! And also congrats for hitting 1 MILLION subscribers Sayaka sensei!!! You will always be our favourite! ❤❤❤
