Building a Bobbed Deuce from a Military 6x6 - Xtreme 4x4 S6, E5

- 33 years ago, it was a 2 ton US Military workhorse. We rescued this M530C fire truck from the scrap yard and found it could not only crush cars, but actually still pump water! Ian and Chris tear it down, and prepare to build a 4x4 deuce with a bed.
Part 2: • Adding 4 Link Suspensi...
Part 3: • Bobbed Deuce: Big Truc...
PARTS USED IN THIS EPISODE:
100 Dollarman: 20" HEMTT wheels with custom centers for Rockwell axles.
100 Dollarman: Used 14.00R20 Michelin X Tires.
Boyce Equipment: Dealers in the field of military trucks, truck parts and equipment. Авто/Мото
Not gonna lie, a 6×6 is way cooler the a 4x4.
yup, i love that bed too, i love the cargo bed on mine but that one would be sweeter
@@johndowe7003 #
Yes but that's why you buy 2 and only Bob one! Haha
Should have left it a 6x6
I'm glad to see the show went on as long as it did. Ian was always a good teacher.
He hit that car a little faster than expected 🤣
And without a seatbelt lol
That was my thought too Haha
Running over that car could’ve gotten ugly! I lmao tho 😭
brain dead .. should have done it slow if at all .. no safety Eq
I would not have done it at that speed or lacking in seatbelt.
No seatbelt, no rollover protection, and hit it on the drivers side through a lefthand turn going way too fast. Was he trying to cripple himself on purpose?
While I was at Ft Polk in a transportation unit we had a guy that side swiped a dump truck bounced off it hit a bridge bounced off it and hit a car head on it put the front bumper of the truck thru the windshield of the car pushed the front axle of the truck up under the bed of the truck and yeah he was COURT MARSHALLED sent to Ft Leavenworth
and another deuce bites the dust....
I drove a deuce in the service & fell in love with the durability of the beast not to mention the multi-fuel capabilities! That's my dream truck when i can afford one!
Monogamous Bonobo A Ignition Compression Engine can use Diesel,Fluids, and Oil just like a Multi-Fuel.A Multi-Fuel is still a Diesel Engine that has different Pistons,Injectors, and Fuel Pumps which is why you can even use Gasoline, but only if it is Mixed with Diesel or Motor Oil.The 7.8L was a turd and under powered. They were only a success overall for the 2 1/2 Ton Truck and because Military Trucks don't see many Mileage, about 30,000 some times. That was until they came out with the M35A3 which had Caterpillar Engines.
You guys were brave using those quick links to lift that load with instead of shackles.
Omg lol, he hit that car so much faster than I thought he was going to
So you bought a 6x and removed the defining feature of the third axle??
The budget for the build only covered 4 tires. Lol
Allen McKinney oh yeah, those tires aren’t cheap
@@melted_pistons they did say those surplus tires were less than $100ea which is dirt cheap. Ya normally tires that size are $500+
@@allenmckinney9533 Don't forget that this actual episode was aired what like 10 years ago. So prices have changed.
@@cbmadcow new there $550 used on ebay there $75 - $200 for the 53" 16.00/20
oh man i need more of this truck this is badass!
You can run aviation “Gas” in a 2 and half ton military truck. We had an aviation gas tanker in Germany (1958-1962) and it always ran on 80/87, 91/96 or 100/130 octane. We actually ran all our vehicles on aviation gas. We were suspose to use MO Gas, but never had a local at the airfield.
At the very beginning, were they talking crap about Sgt. Rock?
Anyone else watch Stacey David Gearz?
That looks like Davids shop
I always wondered was this project a dig at sgt rock or to compete with to
Two best host ever at PN!
Nice project, I would love to see a project based on the Soviet Kraz-255 monster. This is my pick for a end of the world vehicle.
I prefer the ZIL model 131 for an end of the world rig.
always loved this build
This was the first episode of Xtreme 4X4 that I ever saw.
Not the same watching this show with out Jesse
Zoey Simpson I miss her she was bad ass chick for sure
Agreed
@bigtx77 understand that but still haven't seen a show with out her there before
@pete smyth you know what I mean
@bigtx77 Hate to be the bringer of bad news but...she passed.
You should build a 4x4 using a deuce and a half front axle on both ends and end up with 4x4 4wheel steering!
Keep it a 6x6! Shorten the frame in the center and put the back axle at the bumper with quarter elliptical suspension.
Man, this show used to be so rad!
Yup I miss Jessie too she was part of this show for a long time
Lol I love those axles haha I got mine from Boyce equipment to😂😂 poor 65 Jeep truck just loves the axles😂
Ugh! They look so much cooler with both rear axles, though.
The only gripe i have about this is that they only left 9 feet of frame on it when the intended cargo is 10 feet. You had all that spare frame left, you could have broken out the tape measure and checked
totally agree
Yea, no kidding...
Should have left 12' of frame.
Yeah, that seemed like a massive oversight
I like them in 4x4, I would like to see one shortened with a steering axel on the back, but more importantly, there is no way I would part with that pump :D That is by by far the most fun part !
When I was stationed down in Panama we had no diesel so we burned JP4 in them same fuel as the Blackhawk
Ya if it ok to use 87 any gas will work. Jet fuel. I know guys run 50 50 waste oil and 87.
@@dualsportrider3221 well if you check out and think about JP4 is nothing but a high grade of kerosene
Hurts like hell when you launch a duce and a half off of a sand dune.
Who else thinks the host looks like the love child of guy fieri and wreck it Ralph
Waste of a great 6x6!!!! Should have built a 6x6 Wrecker!!!
Bring back Ian!!!
cool project
These will be the fossils of our existence. We'll be long gone, and these bebemoths will still be waiting to turn over again. I will own an M939 someday.
I normally don’t watch these because I always think of Jessi, but I love 2.5s, she would want me to watch this,
We had one of these pumpers on the volunteer fire department I was on for 40+ years. We called it our Tasmanian Stump Jumping Pumper. There was time that I was off road more than on road fighting brush fires. We also had a truck they called a Gamma Goat.
My wife could use that truck for her shopping trips at Costco!😂👍
Ahhh the good ole days.
Somebody a little jealous of Stacey David.? Very classy of you to diss such a cool build that honors our fallen soldiers.
We almost got a new host at 4:00...
Good idea for my area.
"Horn blows! Does the driver?"
Said a wise man.
👏👏👏
When is the next video gonna be posted about this truck?
This truck was a M50CA2 Firetruck. The Military use to Rebuild the M35A2's into M49CA2's Water Trucks and M50CA2 Firetrucks.
You shouldn't use gasoline unless its an emergency. Because you will burn the injection pump up. Diesel fuel lubricates the pump, and gasoline is a good cleaning agent.
pat loughner can you put used motor oil in it to
@@jamesm9766 As long as its filtered really good you can. You got to remember there is usually shavings in it.
Love this guy’s passion.. is he the new presenter ...?
That guy girl team certainly didn’t work...
Can’t wait for the finished video of it going down the road
"That girl" as you call her died attempting a land speed record.
HOLY SHIT, Ian is Back...???
expanded metal on the floor so all the rock and mud from the suzuki can chip up the pretty paint on my street rod
Aviation fuel is almost the same as paraffin or (kerosene) so you could run your truck on that,
Drove these trucks for 3 years in the Marines. We ran them on contaminated jet fuel all the time. If the need arose, probably would run on Jack Daniels.
Wish I had a dime for every mile I've driven one of those tough, ugly S.O.B.s One of the versions we had when I first enlisted had a gasoline engine with the exhaust going out between the right side axles. Some of the Germans loved to cut in and out of our convoys and slow down to make us pass them. If you timed it just right, you could make the truck backfire into the German driver's window. That usually was sufficient to make them go away.
I've always loved me a deuce and a half! There are a bunch in Huntsville
Alabama? I have seen several
@@fast98gtp Huntsville, Alabama! My favorite is the one at Tim's Cajun Kitchen
@@pablotharpalo5685
I think I've seen that one! There's also that one down by freedom powersports on South Parkway.
@@fast98gtp I saw that one when I got some parts for my Yamaha. There's one that sits on University at a dealership too
@@pablotharpalo5685
Pretty sure I saw that one last week. Is it painted to match the business that it sits in front of?
It looks like a poor man's defender! Now I want to build one!
this looks like more of an offender...
Running over that car looked really sketchy
Just gotta say, sooooooo miss Ian Johnson on this show.
I want one!!!
If you were to scrap that fire box how much money will you get for it?
What kind of rear suspension was used?
YYYAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
These rigs were built with these engines also for use in war zones where the fuel supply is "questionable"
I sure hope all those bolts where standard size and not meteric .
At 16:42 he definitely dropped that tire hahahaha
Ian! I miss him on X4x4.
He has is own show on Motortrend
FourWheeler
This is from 2010 but still fun to watch. Doubt they used it much as it probably only had 50-55 mph road speed ... but looks cool at any speed.
You can regear them, if you want highway speeds.
They can do 60-65 MPH if you try,the 7.8L is rated for 2,600 RPM's.
Нот соу бэд!
2:10 Odd that he says you can use kerosene but not jet fuel as they're basically the same
Yea said that it's a diesel engine, pure compression you can use any flammable oil
Diesel,Fluids, and Oil are used in a 7.8L,they are still a Diesel Engine never the less.
Tommy in the shop
WHY ? ? ?
dont get into a road rage fight with 1 them
You guys should build a 4x4 bus
If guys do this all the time, how will this be a one of a kind build?
I want one...🤔😎
New chain?...What kind of shop doesn't have 1/2 inch proof coil?
I thought running over that car was going to go real bad and I wasn't far off.
Memphis equipment have the manuals for every make and model as well m35 and the 5 ton military trucks as well and the M929 6x6 trucks as well and the m809 as well
M530 Firetruck was a 5ton, not a "Duce and a Half"
Nuvey Yes this Deuce is a M50CA2.
I think it still needs the duallys
Why dent the L/H front?
4:15
"Guys do this all the time"
"one of a kind truck"
Wat
✅✅
why didn't you just get a regular deuce and a half? would have saved you heaps of time.
Availability, maybe. But at least they didnt trash the fire kit.
Please post the original air date.
Do you have plans for more power and a better transmission?
this was 10 yrs ago, it's not a new show. lmfao
I work on the 5 ton MTV's, hummvies, and hemmits (LHS) for a living(contractor) & I would love to own an 8x8 recker. They all run on JP8. Basically dirty nonlubricated diesel. And everything except the diff's are filled with 0w-30.
They have to really dumb (simplify) everything down for the military
Glad to see someone acknowledge that the 5 ton was a multi fuel tactical vehicle too.
erleboswell Only for the M39 Series like the M51A2,M52A2,M54A2,M62A2,etc after they stopped using Gasoline and the Mack Engines. All the 5 Ton Trucks after that had Cummins until the FMTV which has Caterpillar.
I'd like to know when this was filmed. Ian's been gone for a while.
Thank God for that, he is quite annoying.
This is from like 10 seasons ago.
I can't find any reference to "100 Dollarman" on the web.
TheDutyPaid I heard they went under started passing off dry rotted tires to customer then pretty much stopped communicating when customers called complaining
This episode is 10 yrs old, lmfao
What kinda engine was attached to the pump?
Probably just a pto off the truck engine
How can it use both gas and diesel?
Shane K Yes but ONLY if the Gasoline is mixed with Oil or Diesel.
Gonna bob a fairly rare deuce fire truck 😥
Should have kept the rear axle and gotten rid of the front axle. Designed bed to be rolled off and on.
Do the lugnuts center? Lookd like a pretty sloppy fit
Yes. Conical seat. Budd lug nuts.
What engines in there?
Mostly 6cylinder diesels many different manufacturers they just call it milspec, diesel
Ronald Harris They all had I6's,not "Mostly".
LDT-465 Multi-Fuel with 135 HP & 330 lbs of Torque.
@@Slim_Slid you are correct but the early ones had a gasoline 6
@@ronaldharris6569 1950 to 1960 the M35 had the OA-331 from Reo or Continental.
The Multi-Fuel was not introduced until 1961,1961 to 1966 they had the LDT-427-1A in the M35A1.The M35A2 after 1966 up to 1988 all have either the LDT-465,LDS-465,or even the LT-465 with different Turbochargers.
Great way to destroy a rare truck!!...... Knuckle heads!
Rare... OK.
What is the little truck at 3:13
I’d love to pick one of those up!
Dodge M37
1ton dodge, rare today they were workhorses and many were worked into the ground.
Irony is cutting it down to a 4x4 you actuaully loos weight capacity in storage and towage..
Was it just me or was the camera image mirrored? It looked like when he was zipping on the lug nuts they were going counter clockwise.
Left hand side of trucks are left hand thread
@@petehomer675 that is odd. Learn something new everyday.
You don't run straight gas in them very long the fuel pump in the fuel tank is lubricated by the fuel.
Ozarks Farmer Hansen You DONT use Gasoline at ALL unless it is mixed with Motor Oil or Diesel because it's still a Ignition Compression Engine.
