      Wow, thank you so much! I have a video I want to do about getting into 3D printing and what it's really like. I've been mulling it over in my head for a while. I want to tell people that YES, get a printer, it's wonderful! And the forewarn them that there are days you'll want to throw your printer out the window. And that there is a danger of wanting to get a second printer because two is double the fun. Oh, and then the filament, ahhh, the filament. I hope you get a 3D printer!!

      @@FilamentStories I absolutely will get a 3D printer this year. I think a video series on 3D printing for beginners would be amazing 🤩 please do it. 3D printing is a very creative hobby that actually makes me feel like I'm in the 21st century.

      @@lungilengidi3972 A whole series is a great idea. I'm going to think it through. I know several people have done similar in the past, like Tom Sanladerer has an excellent set of videos. But as Chris Riley said on his channel recently, just because someone has done a video on a topic, still do your video. You will say it differently and have a different take on things and it's all valuable. Or he said something to that effect. It was a very supportive message and I've thought a lot about his words since then. I want to share with people the joys (and realities) of 3D printing and encourage people to get a 3D printer. (or ward them off if they're not ready for the work it will entail). It really has changed the way I think about the world. We don't have one? Let's see if we can print one. It's transformative of the way I've thought about things.

    I really like the idea of using the transition filament as infill. It cuts down on the waste in the purge tower.
    Doing a second version of the model in purge material is a great idea! Who knows, you might end up liking the purge model better than the "good" one.

    Awesome overview and review. As someone who has had many conversations with Mosaic (and plenty with the CTO), the P3 is definitely a vast improvement on the P2 and I'm very happy about that. Multiple models per-purge block is the most economical way to go. But I do very much agree on having a 0 transition length option. There are plenty of models where bleed is fine, and if it can somehow be combined with the more exact color change transitions, I imagine that some cool effects could be done (imagine a semi-smooth gradient on a spell effect for a mini, while everything else has hard color changes). I still want them to have more recovery methods... that's a longer writeup. Cons are dead on. One of the biggest things is the OTA firmware updates. People don't realize how much that is going to fix issues for people. Have an issue, tell them, hope or expect that they make a firmware update, and it shows up. No more "wait, that's been fixed for 9 months?!" that happened before. I don't know what firmware version you're on, but 22.03.29.0 fixed the issues with the Prusa, so you no longer need "alt" firmware. Cost is going to be the world's biggest debate. If you talk with them, you find out they are a small team that are well paid and the cost for these things aren't money grabs. They made a product that can sit out in the open and isn't just a mess of wires and the minimum number of parts needed to function. They also do very much listen to feedback. I backed them on Kickstarter for the original Palette. Feedback led to the Palette+. More feedback led to the Palette 2. More led to 2S. And more still to the 3. Firmware will continue to improve and fix/add features. There are companies that have not touched their products since their release, so feedback and revisions are massive.

    Now that you have a Bambu with AMS, would you still invest in the Palette? It's an "inexpensive" add-on for an existing printer but the Bambu seems to be a more functional package and leaps ahead in design. However, the Bambu with AMS for us is around $1900.

    Nice, just in time for me as I just bought it :D
    Few questions:
    1. How easy is it to remove filament if it breaks in the machine. For example it's going all the way from the input hole to the buffer length, how can I get it out as it also goes through the splice core?
    2. What do the numbers for heat, compression and cool mean. I can't quite get my grasp of that part?
    3. Is there an easy way to guide the filmament through the palette, like a "filament in" button i have on my vyper, where the extruder moves the filament through the boden tube?
    4. How often have you looked behind the plastic transparent cover and what problem arose the most that you had to fix behind the cover?
    5. I'm used to Cura as slicer, Is there a way to get the profile settings from Cura into Canvas (I haven't found an easy way yet)?

    • @FilamentStories
      @FilamentStories  2 года назад

      Hello Raynlaze!
      1) Typically, it's very easy. The thumb screws come on and off with ease and stick to the magnetic spots on the side of the case. There is control on the touch screen to move any of the eight filament paths forwards and back as well as the main path after the filament has been spliced. On occasion, there is a break in a spot that the drive can't get to, which requires pushing a piece of spare filament through one or the other end to get the remnant piece out. Getting the filament out and the Palette reset typically takes less than five minutes, with most of that being removing and replacing the covers.
      2) I agree, it's not straightforward! I had a hard time cutting off what was review and what was more informational content with this video. I want to do more videos with expanded content on working with Canvas and the Palette. Originally this video was much longer (and possibly more boring as as result!). The base settings for Heat, Compression and Cooling. Some filaments are just fine with that, for instance Polyalchemy Elixir just loves those settings. Some filament needs more heat to make a solid splice and some filament needs the splice point squeezed or compressed to ensure a solid splice. Depending on how much heat or the filament's needs, it may need to be cooled for longer before the Palette advances the filament past the splice core so it doesn't get drawn out, thinning the splice point. It's a matter of trial and error. Ideally, you want to have the lowest values possible. For instance, more compression will decrease the life of your splice tube (a $5 part that is well worth replacing a bit earlier in order to ensure my prints don't fail in my opinion). The current life is fairly large with estimates in the tens of thousands of splices. Here's a document from Mosaic that talks about splice tuning that gives more information with some example numbers for filament types. docs.google.com/document/d/1drtSCEqirU4bwxl9fr31tNBduVxW1juDflmbqZ45sQk/edit
      3) Yes, to a point. You can move any one of the eight filament paths forwards or backwards as well as moving the main Drive which advances or retracts the filament after it has passed through the splice core.
      4) It's not uncommon. Initially, before I got the hang of splice tuning, I was running print jobs with improperly tuned splices and I would have failures mid-print. I also (rather embarrassingly) had a PETG filament in the mix during one of my livestreams. I truly thought the Palette was having issues. It was TWO HOURS (sigh) before I got the model printing and we had a lot of issues where I went behind the covers. I didn't even realize the issue until the next day. In my experience, the majority of the time I have to go behind the covers, it's something that might have been avoided had I made different choices. It's one of those experience makes all the difference things. That being said, I have had issues where things got out of place, one time where the filament got stuck under the guide bar at the entrance point where the filament comes in. Initially, I thought of it as a "problem" when I had to open the panels, but in practice, it's more part of the process and the panels are there to keep things in proper alignment. Mosaic has made all four pieces very easy to remove and replace. But it will definitely happen! You'll be good friends with those thumb screws by the time you've gotten a collection of prints completed!
      5) Not to my knowledge. You can customize the profile settings and make as many profiles as you'd like, but you're constrained to the settings they have and the organization that they have them in. The Prusaslicer option to work with P2PP is a path to use Prusaslicer since they have the MMU component, but there isn't an option for Cura currently. I know there are a lot of Cura users and I totally agree, I like my slicer profiles! It took me a bit to get comfortable with organization things in Canvas. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use whatever slicer we want, but I understand that they need to be able to generate the code from with Canvas because they're adding in things such as the pings to ensure the Palette can adapt their splicing to keep the print on track color-wise.
      I hope this helps. I plan on doing some more livestreams with the Palette and just having a general Q&A session while something prints. We have family vacation at the grandparents and I'm going to be printer and Palette-less, but I should have some going when I return after next week. Hope to see you there if you have more questions. Courtney

      @@FilamentStories Hey courtney, thank you so much for answering my questions and for your comprehensive explanations! It´s good to know that there are multiple ways to get the filament out if something goes wrong inside the Palette. The heat, compression and cooling also make a lot of sense now thanks to your explanation, I'll have to look into that first I think before starting to print something. I'll have to see how many times I'll have to use those thumb screws haha. Hopefully one day they will support Cura as well, but I guess I'll have to get used to Canvas a little bit more.
      It definitely helped me! I hope to be there on the livestream one day. Have fun at your vacation!

Dialling in the various filaments sounds hella annoying, and I'm knid of trying to figure out where I would place it and the rolls in relation to my printer. Just had a little thought towards a hacky solution to reduce filament waste between colours. Could print the resulting gcode with octoprint and the Exclude Region plugin, then set to exclude the reigon of the purge tower.
    Recently got into 3d printing and discovered your content. I have bought lots of filament as a result of this chanel

    • @FilamentStories
      @FilamentStories  2 года назад +1

      It makes me so happy to know that you've found filament you like from our videos. And your idea about the gcode exclusion is definitely interesting and would work in theory for the printing side. The Palette is splicing filament that includes enough length to do the purge tower area though, so you would get out of sync. It would possibly cause issues too if the Palette was doing any of it's Ping position checks during the removed section, which could cause the job to end in error. I like this direction of thought though. It would be so nice if Mosaic would just offer a zero purge tower option.

    • @rossc12345
      @rossc12345 2 года назад

      @@FilamentStories another thought I had and another potential hacky solution. If the pings tell the palette when a change of filament is near and keep printer and palette in sync, might me possible to write a python script to exclude the purge tower and compensate for the change in extrusion length by moving the pings a little earlier in the gcode each time a section of purge tower gcode is removed.

    • @FilamentStories
      @FilamentStories  2 года назад

      @@rossc12345 I wonder what post-processing would be necessary. The pings and pongs aren't specifically when color changes are happening, they're at certain intervals so the Palette can know where it is in the overall print. (I believe). Mosaic hasn't shared much information about the conditions under which they're doing the pings and pongs other than to say it's their internal calibration mechanism since the printer and Palette are only handshaking via the filament usage (in a way). I'm interested in seeing what direction they take things in going forward. Hopefully, they're thinking along the same lines.

    As a user of the original Palette, Palette 2 and 2 Pro, the Palette 3 is a big disappointment. Featured promised before release are still missing. They have taken away the ability to work locally and now you have to use their cloud service. Some of the models I work with have license restrictions that prevent me from using cloud services. There is also no support for Klipper. There is a third party app, but it has not worked too well for me. Mosaic has said they will be adding support for Klipper, but my past experience with them is they will say what you want to hear just to get you to go away. I am still waiting for features promised for the Palette 2. So now I have a $900 paperweight sitting here gathering dust. :(
