I will admit, I was a little disappointed with QoS on first viewing but in the last couple of years it has aged well to the point where I now enjoy watching it. I still believe the end battle needed more, like a epic chase scene getting away from scores of guards chasing them down, like the beginning of Goldeneye or at least like the escape scene from Blofeld's compound, rather than the secluded near empty hotel with a skeleton crew.
Like the final act in Spectre the production issues show. It really needed more thought but they were up against it and it's not as great as it should be.
For me QOS has aged really well, some of the action I find really thrilling more so that Spectre. It does feel 20 minutes of story telling was left on the cutting room floor. I am pleased Craig's performance was mentioned as this is my fave version of him and yes, a great question, can you imagine this version of Craig's bond in Skyfall and Spectre, it would be great, in my opinion at least ha! Great discussion as always.
I can watch the first 30 minutes over and over. Great action, coolness, and I like the clothes but then it falls apart....and how do you follow Casino Royale? I really love the Bourne ending where he confronts Vesper's lover/blackmailer. This took years because I left the theatre that day wondering how they could have just pissed away all the goodwill from the previous film. No one walked into Casino Royale loving or even liking Daniel Craigs casting as Bond...and yet here we are with him considered to be arguably the second best 007 in movie history. I will say this...I would watch QoS on repeat a lot sooner than I would Spectre.
There didn't seem to be much of a plan for Quantum as White escapes [and fades into the background] pretty much straight away. I think the film would have been vastly better if White was the main villain not Green [make Camile his mistress instead as we don't know a lot about White at this time] as he's far more charismatic and Bond already has a grudge against him. You can still have him escape at the end for later films if needs be.
i'm a 'never say never again' advocate...courage be thy name......can't help watching these over and over again...so good...stay well guys...peace...rocky
I actually love this movie, the action, style, locations, soundtrack and Craigs performance, its the most realistic bond movie i think, dark and gritty. I know it has flaws and should be longer, have a stronger villain etc and suffered from the lack of writers at the time, imagine if Martin Campbell directed this?
I may never fully love the film but I will always love the memory of sneaking out of my house to see it in theaters when I was in high school. I had to go on a cross country “sport” school trip the next day and I wasn’t going to miss seeing the film in theaters on opening night. As a young kid, I loved seeing Casino Royale in theaters & I was so eager to see the story continue. I still have mixed feelings about the film but I’ll forever cherish my childhood memory of seeing it on opening night.
I got that beat. I remember going to watch the Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe movie Body of Lies, and after it finished, sneaked into the theatre next door to watch the last 45 minutes of QoS, having already watched the movie three times previously.
Solace is, along with Tomorrow Never Dies, the one Bond film that has climbed through the ranks. For many years it was my most disappointing Bond film, but now I look on it as a fast paced mess of a film, that perfectly captures Bond’s psyche in the film. The brief encounter with Fields, the score, the action set pieces (with the exception of the boat chase) is all to keep up the momentum, as Bond needs to keep up momentum in his quest for vengeance. The song meanwhile is still the worst of the series.
I think I got bored after seeing License To Kill and did not see Goldeneye or Tomorrow at the cinema....then I picked up the dvds and I was in love all over again. Then came the last 2 Brosnan entries but my heart loves both Goldenyer and TND...with Goldeneye in my Top 10.
@@Johnmhemp I love LTK! First saw the Dalton films back to back at a friends house a week before Goldeneye was released (I was 10 at the time) And it shaped my view of Bond forevermore, in fact Goldeneye took my a while to like, I found Brosnan a letdown after Dalton and I found it to be an overrated and unspectacular film. These days I consider it to be one if my favourites, along with TND.
@@spaceodds1985 For Better or worse I grew up with Roger Moore...starting with HBO showing For Your Eyes Only over and over...I understand that Dalton was going Back to Basics but he never appealed to me...Maybe that is why I liked Brosnan because he was probably closer to Moore. I discovered Connery on VHS...I've bought these movies over and over...VHS/DVD/BRAY/MP4 Dalton is the only one I rarely revisit...I can't stomach Die Another Day...but I appreciate The World is Not Enough because the night I saw it we all had a great time. Funny how that effects how I feel about the film.
I always just think of that writers' strike going on as the per-production was ramping up. The script was rushed. I feel the slow story-driven moments would have been more developed had that strike not happened. The movie should have been two hours at least.
They really should have delayed QoS until at least summer 2009 after the writers strike was settled to allow Purvis and Wade to return and fine tune the script a little more.
@@jamesatkinsonja heck, if they can delay No Time to Die by two long years because of some global pandemic, they could have easily delayed Quantum of Solace by six months.
@@treadstone1970 NTTD didn't even start production for a couple of years for Daniel Craig to take a break. They should have pushed QofS back a year then released it before Avatar in 2009.
I think one of the biggest takeaways I get from these great reviews is that it's pretty f#####ing hard making a Bond film, I take my hat off to all the directors new and old who attempt to take on this giant of a franchise, but I have high hopes for Cary Fukanaga I think he has a perfect mix of being a very public fan of James Bond films but also having enough of his own artistic identity to really deliver something exciting 🤞
I remember Roger Mitchell saying he was offered this movie but there was no script yet so he ducked out. so Marc Foster was up against it from the start.
Yep. Nail on the head Joe. Casino is okay to watch as a stand-alone….but I have a hard time watching Quantum without watching Casino directly before it

Diamonds, Golden Gun and View are films that would have been a lot better as 90 min but unfortunately there 2 hours leading to pacing issues and padding.
@Trey Stephens Timothy Dalton should have done 4 films then Pierce Brosnan taken over after that then we would have had another actor taking over around 2010
I must say as a Quantum fan, Joe Darlington‘s criticisms are the most coherent and thoughtful I’ve ever heard. In Quantum’s defense, I felt it was the “art film” of the whole Bond series. Daniel Craigs portrayal is most deep and introspective of all his performances. You feel his pain within, although not always outwardly expressed. This film gave us the most complex psychological understanding of who Bond is and for me probably the most three-dimensional portrayal of the character that has ever been. Thanks guys, it was great and it left me wanting more. Is there anyway you can do a longer version of this?
Totally agree about Daniel's performance in this one. It's an introspective performance that conveys complexity. Despite its flaws, a lot of the film feels pleasingly emotionally connected. That chaotic car chase is the perfect expression of Bond's grief-fueled rage, his violence feels connected to what he's feeling. When he's interacting with other characters he's more shut down and stoic, but in the fight scenes he's letting everything out, expressing his emotions in the action (just like the parkour chase in Casino expressed his relentlessness, brute force and ingenuity) and it's compelling to watch. Compare that to his worst performance in Spectre. I often don't know what he's meant to be feeling. He feels so two dimensional. What is he thinking from scene to scene? Probably 'My leg hurts and this script is balls!'
As far as Mathis being left in the dumpster, would you rather Bond had left him on the street? Propped him up against a lamppost? Or drove to the Chilean desert with him in the backseat? Mathis spent his last moments on Earth consoling Bond [ "We forgive each other. Forgive her, forgive yourself " he tells Bond, not wanting Bond to blame himself for Mathis' death, or seek vengeance. He was trying to give Bond a sense of peace and closure. ] Bond then gave Mathis the closest he could to a funeral, then took his money to make it appear as though it was a robbery to whoever found him first, then told Camille, " He wouldn't care " , knowing Mathis would understand Bond's decision to " bury" Mathis in the dumpster. Quantum Of Solace is my third favourite Bond film of all time. It's both Bond at his most stylish, in the Tom Ford suits, at his grittiest/ most bad ass. Spectre is a hole in the ground, it's the only Bond film I actively dislike.
For 14-15 years of Craig he’s proved that he is THE BEST to ever play the role. It’s not even a question anymore. And I’m a Pierce guy all the way but it’s a cold hard fact that Craig IS the best.
@@TheBondExperience I know there’s purest that will always and forever say Connery is the best but again I don’t think he even touches what Craig has done. But I’ll say this, what Craig did… Dalton was doing it before he was ever even out of college lol
I loved Quantum from the first time that I watched it and it is at number 4 in my Bond rankings. The second films of each actor have for me have all been good bar Golden Gun which along with Diamonds, is the low point of the series. This was an excellent discussion video.
I personally love this film. Great quick action film. Only change I'd make is the intro and the foot chase ending on the ropes is the entier pre title sequence. Spins, shoots fades to theme song.
Interesting discussion. Here is my completely honest opinion: I've always loved QoS and I never understood why people who enjoyed CS didn't like it. It was, to me, simply the 6th act of CR, and it was one of the few times where I walked out of the cinema not being disappointed by a sequel to a film I loved. CR still ranks first among the Craig films for me, but QoS is a close second, and only because it wouldn't have worked as a standalone without CR before it. These two films made me a fan, and so I was disappointed when they didn't continue in the same vein, but rather decided to concede more to the more clichéd Bond approach with a more gadgets, more obvious plot holes and the typical disfigured insane villain (don't get me wrong, I still think Skyfall, Spectre and NTtD are fun flicks and I enjoy watching them, just not as much as the first two). What you say it true, I love the hard-hitting action heroes (McQueen yes, but also Jason Bourne), so that is my jam. I particularly didn't like that they didn't fully commit to making the movies interconnected and abandoned Bond trying to dismantle this relatively realistic Cartel all the way through, and instead everything ended up being reduced to a personal vendetta of Blofeld against Bond (I think this is what I hate most about the Craig-era). I loved Spectre until Blofeld came in, then it went haywire. I understand anyone who says that CR and especially QoS aren't really a traditional Bond movie, but then that is what I enjoyed about them. I can't wait to rewatch QoS now. Thanks for the discussion! Oh, and as a woman and a feminist, Camille was already stroking his cheek in a rather non-platonic fashion, so that kiss is totally fine in my book (and I have a rather strict book).
Yes! I agree with so much here. I hated how they dropped the continuity from CR and QoS and rebooted into the dour, cliched cartoon world of the Sam Mendes films. Craig's era didn't need a Blofeld or SPECTRE, The Quantum cartel was a much more interesting and realistic idea, fitting well with the grounded feel of the first two films. There seemed to be a weird fad in movies and tv shows for making everyone somehow related and every mission personal. I'm with you on the kiss: it never felt creepy or pushy to me. It felt like a nice character moment. There was just a hint of raw desperation in it, Bond seeking a tiny bit of comfort/affection, allowing himself a second of emotional vulnerability. Though I do wish they'd used the Gemma Arterton's character better, both giving her more to do and furthering Bond's character arc. The s*x scene always felt wrong emotionally to me. They could have used it to show how much Bond is grieving for Vesper, trying to drown his sorrows in another woman just as he's doing with alcohol.
Oooh, Joe has a bold opinion about Spectre being worse than Quantum. I'll have to think about that. I watched Spectre recently and it was better than I remember from the cinema.
I would love to see you and Joe do the reviews on the 5th. They are: You Only Live Twice For Your Eyes Only No Time To Die These films are in Top 6 list so that is another reason why I want you to review these with Joe
I think it's underrated. It's not what it could have been, clearly, but tonally it was on the right track going darker and more realistic rather than in the Die Another Day direction. Up against installments like that one, Moonraker and View To A Kill, Quantum looks like high art. I've never been a fan of jump cuts, but Bond has usually been very current, good or bad. The Bourne movies were in vogue, so a movie like this made sense at the time. When the series goes too much for what's in fashion, it tends to fall flat, but it's not like that mistake hasn't been repeated over and over again.
@@TheBondExperience Yep, third act of both these movies are weak. First two acts however, are nicely paced with great locations. I love Italy so slightly biased!
QoS was the first Bond film I saw at the cinema when I was 13. The only other Bond movie I knew quite well was Diamonds are Forever which is literally on the opposite side in terms of everything. While I like Diamonds less with time, I appreciate Quantum more. In fact the often middle ranked Bond movies are my favourites.
The fight at the opera house that was overdubbed with the operatic music was a bad call. It needed a punch at that beat and it leaves you wanting more action.
Damn straight. Most grippingly violent Bond ever, with a great, tight script. Without the writers' strike handicapping it, QoS could have been Craig Bond's LTK.
I first saw Quantum in the Odeon theater in Leicester Square in London in Nov. of 2008. What a letdown! At the end of the movie, when the Bond theme plays and the gun-barrel animation happens, I remember thinking, "Oh yeah, this is a James Bond movie!" because it didn't feel like a Bond movie to me during the past two hours. The writers strike is so evident all through this movie; for example, naming a character "Strawberry Fields" but never mentioning that in the script until the credits. The writing is very sloppy. Quantum was the last Bond movie to be reviewed by Roger Ebert, and I remember Ebert panned the film, giving it a thumbs-down, saying of the Bond girl, "Camille? That's it? Camille?" and Ebert was right. Everything about Quantum is so mundane and "un-Bondian". Quantum lacks all the cool style, the sex, the glamour, the travelogue, the great theme song, the thrilling set (think volcano lair in Only Live Twice), the tough henchman, the suspense-filled villain-scheme, etc. Quantum is a completely joyless movie for me. I seriously rate it even lower than Die Another Day.
The fifth Bond movies would be interesting for discussion. You Only Live Twice, For Your Eyes Only, and No Time to Die. Perhaps the question could be how does the movie change the direction within franchise?
Bond fights for the little guys who just want water, doesn't sleep with the main girl but helping her get her revenge, doesn't follow the orders of MI6 or CIA, what's not to like? Shaky cam is horrific, yes, but everything else is hella based.
I have always seen quantum as a mess and longed on first watch for the fighting to stop and some classy word play to start,,but I do like the “Steve McQueen Bond film” analogy !
I don’t mind QOS at all! I like how different it is. Is it perfect? No Is it Casino? No Is it as good as Skyfall? No But I think it’s really cool. I actually like that he doesn’t get with the girl. I wish they did that in TND. Craig shows how badass he really is. It’s not the best film ever, but as I’ve said before Craig HAS NOT had a bad film yet.
Look it’s Craig as Bond. It’s always going to be a great movie. However am I ready for another freaking Thunderball or Spy Who loved me where we can have a freaking fun bond movie again? Of course
I always enjoy a good Bond discussion. I always liked Quantum of Solace due to its pacing. It was faster to me than Casino Royal, which seemed to drag. In rewatching it,I have come to appreciate it more, but quantum just slams on the gas from the beginning and kept my attention until the end.
I really like Quantum of Solace, it introduces you to the organization behind all this, reminiscent of the old Bond movies. Not just going up against the old Soviet Union, but going up against a "Global villain organization" like in Dr. NO.
QOS is at the bottom of the Bond movie barrel for me. Down there with Diamonds are Forever and Thunderball. Heck Spectre is a diamond by comparison to QOS for me.
loved the discussion gentlemen...agreed with everything....and you both said something i've been saying for a long time....joe...you mentioned that spectre made quantum look better...it definitely did....and david...you mentioned steve mcqueen...yes yes yes....i said that from casino royale that craig reminded me of mcqueen and i would love to see him in a remake of bullitt, the getaway, or the cincinatti kid....or even a mcqueen biopic...he'd be perfect...and i've always watched his bond films like i was watching mcqueen rather than bond....they just work better that way.....be well guys...stay well...peace....rocky
I love this movie too. I do think Skyfall is better but I like this one as much as Casino and possibly a bit more. So much action, very cool bond girl, and also it seems to me to have excellent spy moments.
No Time To Die won't make QOS a better film but it could make Spectre a better film, IF it writes out the Bond/Blofeld adopted brothers storyline. Unfortunately, I don't think it will . .
Late to the party, not sure how I missed this one. I think Quantum gets better over time and because Daniel is near his best as Bond in this one, and probably looking the best he has in any of the films, it has that going for it. I think though if you're realistic, it has a weak premise, weak villain, so so Bond woman and spastic direction. But, as Joe says, if you put it in the context of a larger story, and realize how poor Spectre was, it jumps up a bit. I definitely wouldn't say it's a great film by any means, unless the yardstick is style. It knocks it out of the park there. Great work, gentlemen. Be safe and thanks for all you bring to the Bond community.
Joe hit the nail on the head. Mathis in the dumpster (or skip, as we call them in the UK) is unforgivable even for the coolest man in the universe. And Mathis' blood on his shirt for the next few scenes makes it even worse
Suggestion for a theory on the 4th ones: Does the 4th film jump the shark? You have already pointed out that the 3rd film is usually where both actor and writers find their sweet spot. So when it comes to the 4th film, the question is: Where to go next? In the Bond franchise, this has been repeatedly answered with raising the stakes and going bigger, to the point where they really push the audience's suspension of disbelief. And more often than not, this is to the detriment of the movie. I know you have already covered Die Another Day and Spectre in the "Last = Worst" series, but you could review them from a new angle. There is a common denominator here with at least Moonraker that you haven't discussed yet. Also, as soon as No Time to Die comes out, Spectre is retroactively disqualified from the "Last = Worst" series, so you need to find a new reason why it failed anyway. 😉
Eon's public relations efforts didn't help Quantum. Michael G. Wilson said Quantum took place "literally, an hour, after Casino Royale." That invited closer examinations of continuity. Quantum doesn't withstand that level of scrutiny.
Speaking of, I just watched Golden Gun last night. Been a long time. I still highly enjoy that movie. But do I enjoy as much as Live and Let Die? Probably not. I absolutely adore Dr. No, and it’s been a very long time I think since I’ve seen Russia. Doubt I’d like it better than Dr. No, though. Dalton only did two, both fantastic. With Tomorrow, I might actually like it a little bit more than GoldenEye. Though I had a great time with GoldenEye recently. Of course Casino would’ve been hard to beat regardless. So Joe’s theory I think does largely hold up.
I'm with David on Craig's performance. I also loved Matthieu Amalric (Diving Bell and the Butterfly is superb), just wish the script had been more fleshed out for greene.
For Your Eyes Only had Bond acting as a partner to a women out for revenge but then had to force a romantic relationship between the two at the end. To Quantum's credit, they do a similar storyline but at least commit to the woman and Bond just being partners in there respective quest. Unfortunately, they don't commit to it fully as it feels like Fields was added into the script so the film would not be without Bond getting a love scene [understandably Gemma Arterton doesn't look back on the role fondly and I don't blame her as it's a bit of a waste of her talents].
I wish they'd used Gemma Arterton's character better, giving her more to do both as a character and furthering Bond's arc. That s*x scene could have been used to show how much Bond misses Vesper, he's trying to drown his sorrows in a another woman just like he does with alcohol, but it's not working. Seeing him turn away afterwards, looking emotionally shut off and unhappy would have given the scene more impact and made it less gratuitous.
@@katemara667 Agreed. The writing for the character is something Arterton herself has expressed displeasure about in hindsight. That scenario would have also worked in the context of Craig's version of Bond. He seduces but doesn't sleep with Solange before Vesper and between Vesper and Madeline [and probably in the five year time skip in NTTD] his Bond does seems to use sex in a 'drown his sorrows' way [like in his recovery in Skyfall] without really getting much out of it if he has no emotional attachment to his conquest.
I'm with Joe, best viewed directly after Casino Royale as Bond is hurting after the death / betrayal of Vesper. Quantum is one of those movies that has some good scenes but is by no means a classic Bond movie. It could be said that rather than Greene Bond is at times his own worst enemy. Personally, I came out of the cinema the same as l did with Spectre, a bit underwhelmed / disappointed. Also a shame Olya Kurylenko's character was so poorly written.
Quantum of Solace is the best Bond movie to date. James Bond is undoubtedly a very weak secret agent. An agent who tells everyone his name and almost everyone knows he works for MI6. This character would not have a long life in the real world of espionage. In addition, according to Daniel Craig, the character looks unsophisticated and cumbersome. Jason Bourne is an undercover agent who doesn't even exist. Agent 47, Hitman, is a real threat, even to Jason Bourne. Quantum of Solace brought Bond closer to the character of a bodyguard from MI6, to an operator who moves in the field and it is believable that he would survive. The film has a good story.
Quantum of Solace was a solid fast action paced movie. No doubt the sophomore Craig outing was story lacking, but Quantum proved to be an iconic movie with a visceral vision. Maybe it wasn't the best, but seeing the characters grow a bit and grab you by the @$$ in an awkward way. Overall, a tip of the hat to Licence to Kill
Connery: No Moore: Yes (although I like TMWTGG) Dalton: Possibly Brosnan: Yes, only because GoldenEye was well... GoldenEye. Craig: Yes, because Casino Royale is the greatest Bond film. Although I will say I like the style and locations in QOS :)
It's interesting that all the 2nd Bond films have had somewhat troubled productions which can't have helped. FRWL somehow managed to make a classic out of the chaos but it's understandable why the others suffered.
omg quantum of solace. i know this would sound kind of stupid but i think there was some unsexy vibe going on in the movie. the disconection to the viewer probably was due to an unclear plot, quick character development, exotic but uninviting settings for a cinematic experience, of course the editing was bad and obviously after casino royale the expectations were high for everyone.
From Russia With Love & Tomorrow Never Dies certainly don't fall into that slump! For the re-watchable factor, TND totally outdoes Goldeneye! And I hate to break it to you two, but Licence to Kill was also much more enjoyable and exciting to watch (at least had better villains) than the rather comical juxtaposed lot from The Living Daylights!
I don't think Craig's Bond in QoS would work in Skyfall at all. I think Craig's performance in each film is calibrated specifically for that film, I don't think mixing and matching them would work.
Which is a thing that bothered me. I think the scripts should have been tailored to Craig's acting strengths and to his Bond's characterization, not the other way round. It made his character feel inconsistent.
@@faisalahmed1982 Without Remorse is out on Blu Ray right now and The Tomorrow War will be on Blu Ray this October. Both of these films are Amazon Prime Movies.
From Russia with Love (1963) one of the best Bond films ever. So I'm afraid you have a hole in your theory. Even though it bombed at the office some would argue Licence to Kill is just slightly better than The Living Daylights. Possibly this is a pointless debate?
QOS is supposedly be a direct continuation from the end scene of Casino Royale yet bond wears a totally different suit and shirt right from the beginning at the QOS! This is what has troubled me most understanding...... QOS is just a Bad BAD film period!
@@treadstone1970 cut out the aston martin scene and aerial dog fight scene, QOS wont even score 2/5! What a waste of an opportunity the movie was after the Great success of Casino Royale .... after nearly 13 years I still can't just get over it 😒
make some good points, to me the editing is bad, you can say spectre is pretty bad, but at least the editing is not like editor who just snorted a bunch load of snowfall, and just went to work, it at least felt a slow burn like the wick movies, but being a fan of fleming books, i wish, they had aspects from the short story, cause if you think of the CR book there was alot of stuff they adapted to modern times, cause some of it is not filmable or if they did film exactly it wouldnt be bond, i think more of teh 50s climax episode, so the same could be done for the short story, if i was the writer, i would have it where bond needs information on vesper boyfriend philip masters, who worked with quantum subsidary of spectre, quantum agent, M says if you help the blovian goverment, to overthrow green and the sergent like in the movie, in turn they will give you intel on masters whereabouts, so like in the book he comes back from a mission same, here he does the whole plot you see in the movie with the bolivan water thing which i liked, that it was based in real events of what happened, and then bond gets invited to a bolivan goverment party, where the bolivian guy talks about philip masters, who bond is eyeing down when bolivan guy is talking to him, philip is in the party dancing with the canadian stewardess, blovian guy says good luck, he stalks them finds there house, the same as in the movie, and the candian agent would be a stewardess, rhoda lewelyn, and philip masters. Bond does the whole thing in the movie, bond then meets M a few days later or maybe then, and said you probably says the quatum meaning in the book but in a differnt way, M says, " you gave masters relationship problems, that has vital reprocussion. Bond, " just returning the favor". And the same ending drops the necklace, which symbolize that he can move on from thinking about vesper, which, they want to bring back in NTTD, and we get the reference in spectre, but enough with vesper who is dead, maybe bond visits her grave, or Ms or Kincade. I liked aspects of this movie, not as a whole i thought the chase would be great if it was handled better, yes the steve mcqueen nods were great, and playing on 60s nostagla for sure, or euro spy films, NTTD trailer i get vibes of QOS, but i hope its better than that at least, the plot i liked the real life history taken from it, but overall not that interesting, the end fight in the house was okay, and end of green was okay, opera house scene i liked alot, that was great, they shouldnt bring mathis back from first, cause even him in that movie, was confusing, and then they say here that mi6 mistaked him which meant they tortured him until they found out that he wasnt lying, and then gave him money, like that felt very lets dismissed what happened last time, but i do like him in this not the death so much, green i liked the actor plays the role great, and also appears in bonds mission in munich jk DC films, but why not make it the same universe, boat chase was okay, i like this fan made trailer people should check it out, the music fits so well with the trailer: ruclips.net/video/qBsoBx9xzRo/видео.html
The editing in QoS is still a major problem for me. Not just the overly frenetic action scenes, but even quieter moments have a dizzying amount of cuts and poor camera angles that don't tell a visual story in a pleasing manner. I find QoS a hard film to look at. Also, a pathetic villain. Bond has the same arch as Casino Royale. And it being reconnected later that Quantum was merely a division of Spectre makes the film almost superfluous.
The Next Debate Topic: "Does the 4-th film of each actor goes too absurd in some of it's ideas?"
There ya go, great theory. I hope they see this comment.
I think this theory holds up 😂
This theory actually holds up
I actually think the 4th films are more overblown/overambitious/insecure than 2nd outings
Nice observations.
Valid points!
Wow, I think the first 30 minutes are tue roughest and then it gets into it's groove and the last hour is where it's at its best!
I've missed Joe, happy to see him again!
16:50!!! ... so true ... Bond in Quantum of Solace is not cold, he is TO cold, and that is the main problem of this movie.
I graduated from university in 2008, and I went to see Solace at the cinema near my university, and it was the last time I went to that cinema.
Ah, nostalgia!
I got that beat.
I remember going to watch the Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe movie Body of Lies, and after it finished, sneaked into the theatre next door to watch the last 45 minutes of QoS, having already watched the movie three times previously.
@@treadstone1970 the Body of Lies film?
@@teakcore5261 that's the one.
Don't know how i forgot to mention it in my comment.
QoS is better than many give it credit for but it fits Joe's theory.
There is a quantum of love for it...
From Russia with Love is a second film and the best film of the franchise. Hypothesis refuted.
@@treadstone1970 Agreed. It's such a 'this will do' effort and it needed a lot more work.

I love Quantum…. It one of the Bond films that grows on me every time I see it. 👍🏻👍🏻
Agreed. It flaws are easy to spot, but it's strengths become more apparent with each viewing.
Great discussion today gentlemen! Definitely Casino, Skyfall, Quantum and then Spectre in that order
Could not agree more
Not a bad order!
He's definitely keeping the end up!
@@TheBondExperience I know there’s purest that will always and forever say Connery is the best but again I don’t think he even touches what Craig has done.

This was an excellent discussion video.
Always a pleasure to listen to both of you, regardless of whether I agree with what you say (although I usually do).
Same here.
Joe and David are like twins separated at birth.
One has his own viewpoint to the other, yet both have a mutual admiration for each other.
Thank you!
I was not prepared for the impromptu Sir Mix-a-Lot!
The first half is like Bond on speed. The end weird gun-barrel sequence sums it up.
Being an insomniac. I loved that Bond couldn't sleep in this film.
My problem with this film is that I just couldn't care about his mission. It's so low stakes.
They are:
You Only Live Twice
For Your Eyes Only
No Time To Die
These films are in Top 6 list so that is another reason why I want you to review these with Joe
At the end of Spectre, my friend literally said: "Well, it was alright. It was basically on the same level as QoS."
LOL! That might sum it up!
I could agree with this, except License to Kill is one of my favorites.
Damn straight. Most grippingly violent Bond ever, with a great, tight script. Without the writers' strike handicapping it, QoS could have been Craig Bond's LTK.
At what mark are you guys discussing the production background (writers strike, etc.) that had a huge influnce on the final product?
I hope Joe and David go at it as roughly as the apartment knife-fight scene in Quantum!
Rougher!
No
Is it Casino? No
Is it as good as Skyfall? No
But I think it’s really cool. I actually like that he doesn’t get with the girl. I wish they did that in TND. Craig shows how badass he really is.
It’s not the best film ever, but as I’ve said before Craig HAS NOT had a bad film yet.
I agree Spectre is worse. The brothers storyline nearly ruins the movie. I really hope NTTD rectifies this in some way.
Quantum of Solace is getting better with age.
I might be wrong but didn't Pierce Brosnan once say something like "I remember filming for the first one, but the rest are a blur."
Quantum of solace is Badass

The fourth is generally the most outlandish. It works for Moore, Brosnan, and Craig. Debatable with Connery.
Thunderball is more superior than Spectre. Not even a debate
I say the third movie of each actor is usually the best. And if the actor didn't do more than 2. Its their last thats the best.
Joe hit the nail on the head. Mathis in the dumpster (or skip, as we call them in the UK) is unforgivable even for the coolest man in the universe. And Mathis' blood on his shirt for the next few scenes makes it even worse
Tomorrow Never Dies was a banger of a sophomore.
Oh here we go!!!!!!!
I actually prefer QoS over Spectre, probably on the same level as Skyfall. Hard to top Casino Royale though.
I like Quantum of Solace. It's lean and mean. The writer's strike did affect the end product but still enjoy the film.
He had just lost Vesper in QOS. If you look at him through that prism his more disheveled, rough behaviour makes sense, IMHO.
I think Bond is still hurting over Vesper and that is why he didn’t get the girl at the end of QoS. Another time and place, who knows?
In my humble opinion, QoS is the best Bond, sartorially speaking. Thank you Mr Ford.
DC looks damn fine throughout. Not a fan of the tight suits and short hair in Skyfall.
Battle of the firsts, which actor had the best first, battle of the seconds etc.

Quantum is one of those movies that has some good scenes but is by no means a classic Bond movie.
It could be said that rather than Greene Bond is at times his own worst enemy.

Very underrated film qutam of solace
Connery: No
Moore: Yes (although I like TMWTGG)
Dalton: Possibly
Brosnan: Yes, only because GoldenEye was well...
Lazenby: N/A :)
omg quantum of solace. i know this would sound kind of stupid but i think there was some unsexy vibe going on in the movie. the disconection to the viewer probably was due to an unclear plot, quick character development, exotic but uninviting settings for a cinematic experience, of course the editing was bad and obviously after casino royale the expectations were high for everyone.
4ths theme, grand/over the top, tries to beat the third, gadgets and girls and galore
summed up!
I fuckin love A View To A Kill AND Quantum Of Solace
From Russia With Love & Tomorrow Never Dies certainly don't fall into that slump! For the re-watchable factor, TND totally outdoes Goldeneye! And I hate to break it to you two, but Licence to Kill was also much more enjoyable and exciting to watch (at least had better villains) than the rather comical juxtaposed lot from The Living Daylights!
From Russia With Love was sophomore effort!
For years, FRWL was considered the best movie in the series.
'From Russia' is No.1 Bond Film, for me.
As The Death of Michael Corrleone is to Godfather I/II, QOS is to CR (i.e. a coda).
I wear suit to college to class every day
On the 5th Bond: It would be YOLT > FYEO > NTTD ... not AVTAK

I think Casino Royale is a perfect 5 star film. Skyfall and Spectre are both great 4 stars, and Quantum of Solace is a disappointing 2 stars.
make some good points, to me the editing is bad, you can say spectre is pretty bad, but at least the editing is not like editor who just snorted a bunch load of snowfall, and just went to work, it at least felt a slow burn like the wick movies, but being a fan of fleming books, i wish, they had aspects from the short story, cause if you think of the CR book there was alot of stuff they adapted to modern times, cause some of it is not filmable or if they did film exactly it wouldnt be bond, i think more of teh 50s climax episode, so the same could be done for the short story, if i was the writer, i would have it where bond needs information on vesper boyfriend philip masters, who worked with quantum subsidary of spectre, quantum agent, M says if you help the blovian goverment, to overthrow green and the sergent like in the movie, in turn they will give you intel on masters whereabouts, so like in the book he comes back from a mission same, here he does the whole plot you see in the movie with the bolivan water thing which i liked, that it was based in real events of what happened, and then bond gets invited to a bolivan goverment party, where the bolivian guy talks about philip masters, who bond is eyeing down when bolivan guy is talking to him, philip is in the party dancing with the canadian stewardess, blovian guy says good luck, he stalks them finds there house, the same as in the movie, and the candian agent would be a stewardess, rhoda lewelyn, and philip masters.

Have you guys seen the George Lazenby film the man from Hong Kong? Check it out.anyway…
