Most of them are just business related, but he recently told me about how they managed to get a lucrative contract for the broadcasting rights, where he was all of a sudden in charge with how to spend the money. A huge amount of money. And he felt that it was too much responsibility for him alone, and he rather wanted to judge races so he found someone else to do that job. And if I remember right, the broadcadting rights they got were a big deal for speedway and motorsports in general. Yesterday, my father came over with some of my grandfathers belongings. Some referee shirts and other merch from the 80s and the 90s. All still wrapped in plastic. That was pretty cool. And everytime the events on this video came up, he always told us that he was 100% sure, and made the right call. Without a doubt in his mind. But he was always very firm in his beliefs. Its a shame that I cant share pictures here. Have a lot from those days. Even some with him and Roger moore
Only started going in 1985 so missed Penhall but did see him ride at PCs farewell and at Telford many years later. Never saw Carter but I missed so many apart from the above 2. Sanders, Lee at his best, Sigarlos.
Both Penhall and Carter were very hard riders, lots of elbows and contact through the heats, In my opinion, it was a case of all 4 back to tapes, with a warning to both Bruce and Kenny to calm the fuck down. But, saying that, both riders were entertainers, both wanted to win. lets just say this, modern day speedway, Nicki Pedersen Vs anyone
@@davesinclair8156 Ref can only call all four riders back for first bend bunching incidents, once the riders have cleared that someone has to be considered the cause of a race stopping incident and excluded from the re-run.
@@johnfielding5004 Back then they could re-run it if the referee felt there was no primary cause of the stoppage, so all 4 back in. It was very rare after the first bend, but I have seen it done & heard the ref explain it over the phone to the team managers (as a teenager, I was lucky enough to watch meetings at Mildenhall from the ref's box). The rules have apparently been changed relatively recently so the referee must to choose a primary cause. In this incident, I feel that Carter was ahead & chose a legitimate racing line, so it was up to Penhall to avoid him. Going for a gap which may or may not be closed is a part of racing & if it gets closed, that is bad luck. Once they touched, this straightened Penhall up.
That's a tough call. It looked to me like Bruce locked it up to avoid Kenny, rolled off and straightened out. Then he was too close to Kenny to pull back into his slide and just two wheeled Kenny into the fence. I would have re-started the race with all riders.... Cheers
Was this before the '82 World Final incident. That was another controversy with these two. I was a big Bruce P fan as a kid but remember all the moaning about the Inter-continental final when BP let others through to get them to the L.A. final. Football should have learned from speedway that VAR causes more arguments. We knew this 40 years ago 😂
Yes,very sad. Brilliant and very patriotic rider but very troubled. While I can't condone what he did,he was one of the few people I admired that were younger than me. RIP Kenny and Pam.🦊🙃🦡🙂
Bruce always the cheat. Came out top most times for some unknown reason. The refs always seemed to back Bruce even when he was guilty. But not this time. Bad riding. Ran Kenny into the boards. Loved Kenny. Thought he was robbed in the Final. Bruce done him again. Great rider. Loved him, but can't forgive him for what he did to his wife..unforgivable
RIP kenny
Penhall had his chips in that race
Classic rivalry, sadly both careers ended far too early 😕
As much of a fan as I was of BP, the ref made the correct decision. RIP KC.
The ref, my grandfather passed away this month, and he told me stories about his days with speedway. I didnt know all of this was on youtube.
@@andykay2802 Please tell us a few stories.

@@andykay2802 What about posting them on FB? They’re a part of speedway history.

Penhall didn't need to try to be a superstar, he WAS a superstar. That being said and much as I disliked Carter, ref called it correctly.

Mr. Penhall clearly not as angelic as he looked

Only on the 1st bend would that happen, ref got it spot on
@@tartantony08 I'm not sure what the rules were back then, but it does look like both riders played a part in the crash to me, so?
Third bend Bruce pushed him out for sure.
I have seen this incident many times and i really hate to call it 50/50 but i actually think it is...
