I always liked Bruce not only because he was a fantastic charismatic speedway rider it was for his toughness on track...he was always a target for the riders who liked to dish out the rough tactics, but could always give as good as he got...

Simply the best I've ever seen in 56 years watching the sport I love. Privileged to have seen his first and last rides in British Speedway (and to see him break the track record at Landshut in The Golden Greats in 1989 - 7 years after retiring - on a bog standard untuned 4 valve.) Even more privileged that he rode for my beloved Heathens, and that he still comments regularly on my posts. 🇺🇸🇮🇹🔨🇺🇸🇮🇹🔨

Great montage of one of the sports greatest riders......first saw him ride with his fellow countryman Mike Bast in the intercontinental final at white city way back in 77 I think ?.?....they were boath way out of their comfort zone on the huge london track....but he was a quick learner and went on to great things...was at Wembley when he won his first world final and to this day the two heats he had against Olsen and knudsen will stand the test of time as some of the finest you will ever see.....the on track rivalry with carter will always be what most of us remember more than anything....the incident in the 82 final in la was pure Hollywood.......it could not have been scripted....to us brits he did become the villain of the night and for carter the fearless lad from Yorkshire it would signal the end of his chances to win the world title........its a shame penal left the sport for a career in Hollywood.......love him or hate him he was a class act and was as the yanks say pure box office........thanks once again martyn for all your hard work in putting these clips together......anything that can briefly take us away from what's going on in the world at the moment is a great thing and I thank you for that......all the best m8....and stay safe!

You should have seen Penhall back before they banned the 22 inch rear wheel. We could run either 19 or 22 depending on which line we liked to ride. He usually preferred the outside line. The 22 rear tire was a true knobby tire and worked great in the cushion. He would simply fly around the outside, just like in one of the races you see here in this video. I saw many great races between him and Bast and Christian. Penhall and Fishback and some others riding the outside line. It made for great racing. They should bring it back.
    Great work Mr. Hepworth.

I'd go for that. He was one mean dude. I knew him back then. He was cut like a body builder, lean and mean. But you wouldn't catch him riding the outside line for his life. He would routinely run his bike into the wall over and over the steepen up the forks for riding the inside line. Once he was in front, no one ever passed him on the inside, only on the outside line. That's where Penhall did his best work.
