    The Remake is great but I think there is still flaws that some people agree with.
    Firstly, the ending. In fact, people were so disappointed in the ending that NightDive decided to remade it in future updates.
    Secondly, the cyberspace. Many players feel bored after a couple trips in c-space because it lacks content. With part of the content being cut most cyber levels just blend together. You rarely find new software or encounter unique or challenging situation, just hold M1 to win.
    I saw a lot of players saying that combat itself is boring, nailing down to just leaning-shooting-leaning back. And on top of this a lot of enemies don't react properly to them being shot and lack of dismemberment system. Personally, I also think there should be some tweaks to be made and cut content to be restored.
    But giving the fact that this is NightDive's labor of love, they will eventually fix and add things to the game, we just have to wait... again.
    Speaking of console release, I think they want to ship it with remade ending. My bet is somewhere around this winter.

      That's fair, particularly when it comes to cyberspace. I was honestly so grateful that I wasn't getting lost and nauseous that it didn't really occur to me how mechanically stripped down it was.
      I do hope that the console release is soon. I've been pestering my friends to give it a go when it does.

      Yeah I doubt they're going to let you lean well moving though in the console version, they had the control stupidly locked down until the final version and they're still pretty broken.. But I didn't realize they changed the ending..? What did they change it to? I haven't played it since like well last summer.. and I never heard anything about it.

      @@JackWse Do you already have been able to play the console version or did you somehow managed to run current version on consoles?
      I lost my bet and the patch 1.2 is not officially out yet as well as console versions and I don't know anything particular about them besides what NightDive already wrote in Kickstarter page and Discord group.

    I enjoyed your video! I never got to play either System Shock but I did want to play them. I only heard about the remaster last year so I bought it on Steam when it came out. It has been blowing my mind. The gaming industry has gone so far away from this style of game development that it truly shows how unique and interesting it is. I have been having a lot of fun playing it even though some puzzles remain very cryptic.
    I have been getting lost a lot but slowly uncovering what to do next, one move at a time. I am playing all difficulties on Medium and I love how I am constantly tested on all fronts, yet in a fair way. I give it a 9 out of 10. I would give it a 10 but I don’t think it has something for everyone.

    • @SwannyTheMike
      @SwannyTheMike  10 месяцев назад +2

      That uniqueness is why I love going back and playing older games so much. Games like System Shock were made in the Wild West days of game development when everyone was testing the limits of what they could do with gameplay. Not every old game is on System Shock's level, of course, but it's always interesting to see what it's like.
      I do have hope though that the indie space, now more than ever, can pick up the slack on that front. ...You just have to dig through all the lazy meme games and asset flips to find them.

    If the System Shock Remake comes to consoles, I might check it out. I've never played the original two games.
    Now if Nightdive could remaster or remake AVP2, day 1 buy. I'd also say Halo CE, but 343I has a death grip on it. Not a good thing.

    This turned up on my feed. You're now in the algorithm. You're one of the few people pointing out that the iconic look at you hacker corridor line is only in the sound test.
    The quality writing and cringe humour is being held back by the dead silence between your paragraphs. I think creators like Josh Strife Hayes and Patrician keep their retrospectives mostly free of background sound or music, but your pacing and tone feels like it's better suited to having them.

      Yes, the jokes don't land because they are stupid. The gags are decent. But once you stop and point out the joke it becomes childish pointless humor. If you want kids to watch this then go ahead. But all adults understand humor and will get the jokes. Explaining them makes them painfully unfunny. Even if we don't get the jokes we will feel the humor. Unless it's ruined by the editing.

      @@JurijFedorov I think I've seen unfunny jokes turn out funny because it's compensated by charm. Awkward humour is a thing at least. I've seen a few of them throughout some of the video essays I watched. Grimbeard does a lot of the awkward pointing out too and he's good at it.
      Editing definitely helps a lot. In some ways, it adds to the context of a joke that makes it feel funnier than it would have been on its own.
      I've seen some stand-up comedy clips where I laughed very hard every time I watched. But when the same comedian told the same joke for a video with no audience, it felt awkward. The joke itself was still funny, but the silent awkwardness held it back.

    I'm one of the rare people that prefer enhanced edition over the remake. My reasons mainly boil down to overcoming the overly complex controls that kind of killed the initial impression of the original(which was BTW the only problem the game had since launch). Using cursor to sway the camera hud gently in X and Y axis is cool but there's also "move and slide to a 60 degree angle" by left clicking which is kind of stupid even at the time and overly complex (People were still figuring stuff out att). In SS:EE all of this axis nonsense was fixed by letting the player lock the crosshair in the middle of the screen by pressing "E" which eliminated the need of adjusting the view point mechanic and also oversimplifying encounters where you can essentially aggressively peek around corners and snowball enemies out of control if you'd like, or initiate retracting firefight if you had no ammo or if you're low on hp -meaning you can quickly back up without bad camera controls slowing you the fuck down.... The only issue that has yet to be solved in Enhanced Edition is Shodan appearing too rapidly on the screen preventing the player of shooting it with cones or shurikens even with all the software upgrades and upgraded Cybershield. Well it turns out modern machines have no fps cap and no matter whichupgrade you collect on the bridge level of the game you're screwed unless you turn on the V-sync in the config file... So yeah... without bad mobo bios controls of the original (seriously it looks like they tried to make it as overly complex as they could), System Shock wouldn't really have a need for a reboot or a remake.

    • @SwannyTheMike
      @SwannyTheMike  11 месяцев назад +1

      Well that explains why it was so hard for me to beat Shodan in the Enhanced Edition. I figured it was just because I suck at the cyberspace sections!

    • @Banzeken
      @Banzeken 3 месяца назад

      “Overly complex controls” You’re exaggerating, OP. I don’t know how you played the original MS-DOS version but there is no need at all to “sway the camera hud” (?) with the mouse. You shouldn’t be performing any kind of movements or view changes with the mouse at all, as it is completely optional. If you memorize the keys immediately next to your almost-WASD movement keys you can walk, strafe, lean, turn, crouch/crawl, cycle weapons and look up and down exclusively with the left hand (not too much finger-stretching required) and focus on interaction, shooting and inventory management with the mouse exclusively. Minus the lack of instantaneous half- or full-turns with mouse look, this is not a very difficult control scheme to get used to, especially considering the age of the game we’re talking about. System Shock isn’t very fast-paced to begin with and as such rapid turning and looking isn’t required to perform well across the whole game. I realize that I’m in the minority of people who can rewire parts of my brain to get used to older and newer control layouts, so perhaps I’m coming across as insensitive to other’s genuine concerns.

      @@Banzeken I had an old IBM machine, it was my dad's only station in the house and i'm pretty sure all of my CS mates in the class HATED controls with the passion. The only game before SS that kinda had similar controls was ofc Stygian Abyss. I realise that this was the time where there wasn't a true 3D industry standard controls implemented much like in the case of marathon but marathon is revolutionary because it's the first mac commercial game to feature "freelook" as oppose to having to swag X-axis with arrow keys and bash your head against the wall each time you're trying to get around the corner because proper strafing wasn't a thing i suppose. I guess if you like robotic motion in an fps it might suit you but otherwise it's just a bunch of motion sickness..

    • @Banzeken
      @Banzeken 3 месяца назад

      @@korenizdva9718 “swag x-Axis with arrow keys” You must be confusing System Shock with another game. Seriously? Looking with the arrow keys? No such thing is ever needed. The R, F and V keys are *right next* to the movement keys. Same for strafing, and it’s even easier if you work with the SZXC keys by default and only nudge your fingers up towards the A and D keys when turning is required. When quicker turns are required, the sprint key is your friend. Couldn’t be simpler, unless the game defaulted to mouse look and, no, I’m not against having that. It’s just that System Shock doesn’t need it.

    I felt like a lot that made System Shock so unique was sanded down.
    Everything had to be made perhaps a little too obvious? The drawn out animations & cutscenes did a lot to change the atmosphere, no mystery or leaving anything to the imagination.
    Also the weapons got massively simplified.
    It is so cool to manually adjust the SparQ beam settings in the original, it's much more immersive then an animation of this guy(did not care for his characterization either tbh) clicking a button for me.
    Like, I can't disagree with a lot of your praise for it. The VA is spectacular, it's really stylish, and some of the enemies are really cool.
    But you really make it sound perfect, and it is just really not.
    Urgh the ending... I guess that's sort of a tradition for the series, ha... but they never made me actually upset until the remake.

    • @SwannyTheMike
      @SwannyTheMike  4 месяца назад

      It wasn't my intention to make the remake sound perfect. I was approaching it as the modernization that it was intended as and that would typically involve streamlining things like the SparQ and the manual interaction with the HUD. In that respect, and considering both the $40 price point as well as my nonexistent expectations for the remake after the initial demo, I was extremely impressed with the finished product.
      I was still aware that it wasn't quite the same experience as the original System Shock though. Which is why I recommended for viewers to play both the Enhanced Edition and the remake.
