Oooohh, Boiling Point got a mention! Now that is a game I played a lot and enjoyed, But never heard anyone else mention. Would love to see a video on it at some point!
I would love a modern remake in the vein of a Yakuza/Like a Dragon game. They definitely share some DNA.
I didn't find this out in time for it to make it into the video, but they actually are making a new one... in partnership with an NFT company. Specifically in relation to unspecified "Web3 integration" in this new Rent A Hero. ... Sega has hurt me so much over the years that I can't even manage to be angry about this.
Speaking about remasters and remakes rogue trooper got a Redux play it now quite a good game
I keep forgetting about Rogue Trooper! I need to get my schedule sorted already so I can figure out what all I plan on covering next year.
Man, no one does small, urban open worlds like Sega. Great review! I would love if 3d beat’em ups made a come back, especially when they include exploration like this, yakuza, and Shenmue
I'm right there with you on a 3D beat 'em up comeback. I'm not asking that all of them try to be like Yakuza, but if we can have 2D revivals, surely we can get a couple fun 3D ones as well, right?
Hey did you know Sega sangio survived yeah he's in a ramen cup commercials he apparently became cyborg
I actually had a reference to that, but I cut it at the last minute for pacing. Which made me die a little inside.
I totally agree that there should be more Thundercat games I've been trying to get retro studios in studios that do beat em ups to make a thundercats game for a very long time I even had the name of it thundercats return to 3rd Earth
Love that name! My only request if something like that got made would be to keep the ro-bear berbils from speaking. I rewatched the series recently and that modulator they put over the voices for them was like nails on a chalkboard.
We definitely got to keep rolbare Roberto in I mean he is the only Mexican food place on 3rd Earth
@@orcwarchiefreviews Well, I mean, yeah. Where else are you supposed to buy your healing items from?
Not gonna lie, I would totally watch you do a TEW stream.
You might regret saying that, because half of the stream would consist of me building my roster, booking a couple shows and then going "I have too many talented people, I don't know who to push!" before starting over again. lol
@@SwannyTheMikeI would also watch that
Another good review Swanny, keep it up! The consistency is key. Look forward to seeing your Pirates review in January.
I find it funny that you released this on the same day that the new Power Rangers beat-em'up game is released. Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but still, i think thats pretty funny
It's a beautiful, *beautiful* coincidence.
Another awesome review. I havent heard of this game before . I always like when you cover games I dont know much or any about. You review covered the game pretty good. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving and have a safe and peaceful christmas/ holidays. Thanks mike
Speaking of Rent a Hero and Yakuza - those who played the first Ichiban Yakuza game remember the sidequests with the same name and see the origin of them.
I'm ashamed that I forgot about those quests. Would have been the perfect excuse to play that again!
There is a Rent A Hero point and click adventure that has nothing to do with this game except the name. So technically we have Rent A Hero.
Proof that we live in the worst timeline.
I understand how people feel but for me, suikoden 4 is the best for me. the graphics and the story is for me. I remember how when I'm still kid I'm in awe for this game
And that's a perfectly valid way to feel about this, or any other game!
lol those Saturn commercials were really _something else_ … 🪐
I'd love to hear how they sold the execs on these ads. "The last thing you want to do when selling a video game console is tell people you're selling a video game console!"
this game has 10 times better combat than dark souls. its an insult to compare them. in dark souls combat is just doge the attack and hit the enemy.
I mean, if we're being reductive about it, that describes how I played Blade of Darkness as well.
Am I the only one who sees Conan O'Brien in the old Gabriel Knight?
You are, in fact, the second person to point that out to me. And I can now never unsee it.
great vid!
I have mentioned that I don't really care for the series but I did play all 3 when I was younger and they somehow all just blend together. I want to say it was 3 but I remember some really awful ATV section that infuriated my two friends and I.
That was definitely 3. The ATV section in India is an exercise in frustration.
Love your videos and reviews. Your commentary is wonderful and make me laugh. Keep up the great work mike . Cant wait to see what's next
Another banger video! I never knew Lara went to Area 51, it really adds to the pulpiness of the series. I’m guessing they were struggling to think of more famous ancient ruins in countries to explore
My theory is that it was both struggling to think of other famous ruins and Core getting burnt out on trying to figure out how to make all those ruins and tombs feel different from the ones in the previous games. I mean, the studio was so sick of the series by this point that The Last Revelation was meant to be the end of the franchise.
If I recall, you have to hold L1 with a controller to back out of crawl spaces. That said it's very much a trial/error thing, I love these remasters but for some reason only having the manual for controls (including the all new modern controls!) on a website is a dumb move. Lara's front flip out of crawl spaces is actually ported to this game as it was introduced in Chronicles. (though it was cut from both TRIII and IV for some reason initially.) I actually found the original TR III save system worse as TR1 had plenty of save crystals but TRIII has far less of them and often locks them behind deadly secrets. (which combined with the more unfair level design means I had far more issues with TRIII compared to the original.)
I tried it again out of curiosity and still couldn't get it to work. Maybe it's an oversight on the PC version? And I didn't even know there *was* a manual! I had to use the 'rebind controls' menu to figure out which buttons did what. Thinking about it, having limited save items in 3 is way more brutal than essentially a checkpoint system in 1 just based on 3's relentless difficulty. I was looking at it based purely on being able to save wherever and ignored how sparse those saves would be.
@@SwannyTheMike I have the PC version and used an Xbox One Controller, I just had a brain fart and gave the wrong controls. You have to hold your Walk button then move backwards while holding your grab/shoot button. (so for me, holding X, down on the left analog stick then the right trigger, you also need to have Lara lined up with her back to the ledge.) I generally like the modern controls but it's more buttons than the original controls. (and a bit awkward to figure out due to the lack of included manual.) I think the TRIII Save system in *theory* is good, the issue is due to how punishing TRIII is and the fact I think there's actually less overall save crystals. (or at least feels that way considering some of them are at the end/during some incredibly difficult sections where you practically have to use them on the spot.)
Well I'll be damned... It works!
Weren't the monks in Tomb Raider 2 friendly if you didn't shoot them? Just played through TR3 for the first time this year. The levels are so long that it became a slog to finish. The levels had problems with objective conveyance to the point I just used a walkthrough once I hit London.
If they did, then I must have had it glitch on me because I purposely tried to avoid killing the monks when recording footage for 2 and kept getting attacked. Tibet was the most glitchy part of all three remasters for me, so it's not out of the question it was a bug.
@@SwannyTheMike All it takes is one stray shot and then they all hate you forever :D
@@SwannyTheMike If you accidentally hit them once, they turn hostile. This plus Lara's auto-targeting does NOT attempt to avoid them and other friendly NPCs in TR3, meaning the average playthrough will likely turn them hostile at some point.
Man am I glad that I added that line about me being mistaken then!
"Oh yeah, I just can't stop tombing." - Lara Tomber
Tombing is a serious issue. If you or someone you know has a tombing addiction, seek professional help.
Suikoden 4: Islands of greatness amidst a sea of dullness. There are so many neat ideas and character concepts that just never realize their full potential here. Funny thing is, the spinoff game for S4, Suikoden Tactics, is a far better game in most respects and an excellent SRPG on its own merits. I know that the name of Suikoden Tactics was changed to Rhapsodia in Japan. I've never quite understood why, but if I had to guess, I'd say it was Suikoden IV's poor reception and the closest thing Konami has to shame.
Now all I can think about is an alternate timeline where Konami was capable of shame... In all seriousness, I've been told by others that Tactics did a much better job, so I'm looking forward to checking it out once I'm done with the mainline games and move on to the spin-offs. Had I known how tightly linked IV and Tactics were, I probably would have done the series in release order instead of "mainline games, then spin-offs".
@@SwannyTheMike Tactics is (atrocious voice acting aside) one of the best SRPGs I've ever played, and that is one of my specialties. I think you'll like it, since it does a number of things that other SRPGs don't do as well, and plays around with a lot of mechanical interactions in ways you don't really see out of the genre except from the PS1/PS2 era. (the last squeeze of the "pioneering era" of gaming, before everything begins converging towards uniformity)
I think, structurally, most of the main story is brilliant...right up until the end. It sets up a well-composed mystery and wheels-within-wheels machinations that taps into the natural animosity between the Grasslanders and the Zexens, and unlike the previous game's City-States vs Highland conflict, it bothers to demonstrate the general unease and existing tensions between the two cultures BEFORE the war begins in full. I've thought a lot about this game's story since it released, and ways I would rewrite it to fix the problems therein (redoing Geddoe's stuff though not his crew as they have some of the best character-writing in the game. Chris's arc is likewise, excellent and I have no real complaints about it. Her fellow knights are very obviously references to the knights of Arthurian legend...which would make Chris herself Arthur. I do agree that the knights' personalities and roles needed to be expanded upon to show that despite how powerful they are, they too are just human in the end. Hugo needed an actual character arc instead of this odd placebo arc he gets. Why Lucia cedes command of the Karayans to him makes no sense given how outwardly proactive she was in Suikoden 2 and that in their specific situation, she is by far the most experienced commander in the Grasslands, having fought a long campaign under Highland in the Dunan-Reunification War. But my biggest rewrite would come to the main villain's stuff. My main problem isn't necessarily who the main villain is and why they're doing what they do so much as the actual plan he comes up with. Without spoiling anything accidentally...the main villain's solution is like blowing up half your house just to stop an arsonist from setting it on fire. It makes no internal sense. Which is a shame, because the villain's heel-turn on his own villainous faction would have made for a pretty great moment in itself had it been the lynchpin for the Harmonian Army's failure. (they're on the verge of victory...and then something disastrous happens unseen within their ranks, and this is what allows the main characters to actually regroup their mangled forces into a cohesive unit to start winning on their own terms; learning only much later what happened and why)
That it comes so close to being great is what makes the story here so frustrating. And I would have absolutely preferred your version of how the main villain's heel turn plays out. Especially if his plan had some logic to it. I don't need to agree with a villain's plan, but unless the story is going for "absolutely insane" villain, I *do* need said plan to make sense.
@@SwannyTheMike Funny thing about "absolutely insane villain" is that is something I used to hear in reference to Luca Blight. The thing is...Luca Blight is a bloodthirsty madman, but he actually has an INCREDIBLY DARK backstory reason for doing what he does, and hating both the City-State and his own Father, to the point where he assassinates him. And it's something I didn't pick up on the details of in Suikoden 2 well after 15 years of owning/playing the game. (I have an original PS1, Region-1 copy, so...yeah. I've played Suikoden 2 a LOT) Suikoden 2 is one of the only games where I learn or appreciate something new within it every time I play it, and there are so, SO many instances of that quality within Suikoden 3 that it breaks my heart knowing it won't pay off. I have only ever finished Suikoden 3 twice, but I've played up through the True Water Rune at least a half dozen times.
@@atmosdwagon4656 Luca Blight is the shining example of how to use a sympathetic backstory to enhance a character's villainy. It leaves you with the disturbing implication that anyone could wind up a remorseless monster like that. None of this "Oh, he killed millions, but he had good intentions and/or a sad backstory, so it's okay." shit that so many stories love to do with their villains.
15:27 The Strategy Battle system they chose looks as cheap as it does because it's secretly a low-overhead buffer-screen to facilitate loading and unloading all the combat action scenes in 3D; a problem the previous two Suikoden games didn't have. I don't say this to defend the strategic battle system of S3, because it is very fundamentally flawed and it reeks of something they threw together because of pressure from higher up at Konami for Suikoden to get with the times and modernize. (this happened again in Suikoden IV, resulting in a lot of misplaced priorities for that game too) Personally, I would have greatly preferred if they had taken Suikoden 2's system and polished it up mechanically, because it was a phenomenally good story telling device that portrayed the scale of multiple armies battling within a specific location perfectly.
BIRD
A truly jewel
I always assumed Lazlo was saved by his mother’s memories and soul within the rune as a former wielder of it. Similar to how Shinji’s mum caused Eva 01 to instinctively shield him when he was in danger in episode 1 of Neon Genesis. I also thought maybe that played a part in why he ended up being the intended new bearer even if Glenn played the role of temporary host for a bit. But the game really should’ve explained how he survived properly. For me, the biggest suspension of disbelief aspect to Suikoden IV is how little everybody around Lazlo is freaking out and beside themselves with terror over the fact they could all be killed at any moment. Knowing the rune is draining at the life force of the user whenever active should be a very sobering thing, it’s sad and scary for him and all of them, too. Especially for someone of his age. He’s barely out being a kid, but it’s not treated as such. The story itself doesn’t take the gravity of his potential future death seriously enough, and just how much using the rune is playing with and shortening his life, while endangering the lives of everybody around him. No, instead it does moronic things like forcing you to waste one of your finite chances to use it in order to kill a goddamn crab boss. That’s just stupid. Where is the starkness and the gravity of Lazlo’s deadly circumstances while host to the rune? Why did Snowe get the best character development? Suikoden 4 had the potential to be amazing as a game, with an incredibly deadly rune and a story focused on atonement, punishment and forgiveness, you could do something with all of that, but nooo.
@@laileleneirose7966 Part of me suspects the original plan for the game was something much darker, but then the higher-ups decided they wanted it done fast and cheap, so this is what we got instead.
Alundra is still my favorite game. Developed my problem solving skills as a kid.
the control and the shooting is just terrible for me, everything feels slow and clumsy... half life, quake 1 and 2 and even doom have a better feel
@pedroroggla8129 I mean, it's not a surprise that three of the best FPSes of all time feel better. Though personally, I find Sin and Quake 2 feel about the same minus Sin's limb damage system. Then again, I've suffered through crap like Blood 2 and Requiem: Avenging Angel so that probably colors my perception.
23:46 Just wanna point out this is one of like 3 times in the entirety of Excel Saga that "Fuck" is ever said. The anime, on the whole, hardly swears at all but is quite unhinged.
And that's what makes that line so hilarious to me.
As a Chinese kid in 2004, I found this game's pirate copy in one of the pirate market in my hometown for around 1 USD. Was shocked by the graphic and gameplay. My PC was struggling, had to save an entire year of breakfast money and Chinese new year money to upgrade a Gforce video card, which was around 100USD at that time. Then enjoyed the game for literally next 10 years. Beat the game with no saves in 2015. Last year the game is on steam, as a 30 something yr old Chinese in 2020s, I'm able to buy the game with no stress, bought 5 additional copies to give to my friends, to make up the guilty I played pirate as a Child, although knowing it will never pass censorship and wont make it into Chinese market at that time. Still wish the original dev can receive some money from my purchase. Thank you for bringing such a masterpiece onto this world, and, my world.
Beating the entire game without saves!? I thought I was dedicated to this game, but you are on a whole different level, my friend!
@SwannyTheMike well the game does save itself on the begining of each level so it's totally doable and the whole run only takes about 10 hours
@@SwannyTheMike If you die there is a button called "restart level" so you don't have to replay the whole game, just keep computer and the game on before you beat the game. Using dwarf and knight is easier than you thought, Barbarian is a little hard to do.
@@petfish8949 Even so, I've tried playing without saves before just to see how far I'd get and I'm far too clumsy of a player to make it past the second or third level without needing to save.
@@SwannyTheMike I saw there are an achievement on steam that 1.2%of players actually beat the game with no saves, guess there are a lot of hardcore gamers for this game.
I feel like the Dreamcast version is superior, even without the expanded content, because on Gamecube the sound chip is nowhere near the quality of the one in the Dreamcast and the whole game sounds really scuffed. I genuinely didn't realise that the whole soundtrack was generated from MIDI until I heard audio from the gamecube version and couldn't believe how terrible it was by comparison. I feel like playing a shorter game with better sound is preferable to a longer experience that is accompanied with substandard audio.
I hadn't even considered that. Actually, I didn't even know the Gamecube's sound chip was that much weaker than the Dreamcast's. Mostly because I stubbornly refused to play Sega games on a Nintendo console as a kid. It felt like heresy.

Are there many m rated star trek games outside of klingon honor guard?
I don't think so. Star Trek isn't really an M-rated series. Unless a Lower Decks game came out and I missed it.
HELL YEAH, BRAVERN!!!!
There is no blade of darkness in the game, the whole title is the result of a mistranslation. Should have been "Edge of Darkness". I got the game demo in the early 2000s with a magazine, which also had an interview with the developers. The demo had only the intro level with Sargon. Then we had the full version in the cybercafe I worked at, and we did play the multiplayer quite a few times, together with Halo: Combat Evolved, Medal of Honor Allied Assault, Unreal Tournament and Age of Mythology. Never finished the game back then.
Edge of Darkness definitely seems like a more appropriate title. Though that weird patent troll who sued everyone over having "Edge" in the title of their games probably would have gone after them then. I always wish I could have experienced cybercafes at least once, but I grew up in a place four hours from any major city so I completely missed out on cybercafes in their heyday.
@@SwannyTheMike well, they were fun, but nowhere as fun as a real LAN party. Working in one had its perks, of course, surely wouldn't be able to afford that many hours of gaming if I had to pay for them :))
@@SwannyTheMike and by weird patent troll, I would assume you mean Tim Langdell, and "weird patent troll" is quite an accurate definition for him.
@@thebayandurpoghosyanshow Yeah that's the guy. I always forget his name. All I can ever remember is that he was convinced that he owned the word 'Edge' and then he tried suing EA over Mirror's Edge. That was hilarious.
@@SwannyTheMike well, that's quite delusional if you ask me :)) And then, that's quite ironic, knowing EA registered a trademark on the dialogue wheel if I remember it right.
I love that you kept all the edits to the cropped window for the game, and even gave everything that interlaced, bit-crunched look. Very nice attention to detail

Believe me, it's something I've been keeping an eye out for when I check ebay. I've got a fever and the only prescription is more Gowron!
@SwannyTheMike The game is currently considered Abandonware, which makes it available for free to download. It was such a relief to me when I looked up fan discussions after finishing the video and saw that I wasn't the only one who thought the game dropped off a cliff in disc 2.
The spiteful drama farming content is so effective since there are so many children on youtube nowadays, and they love to watch that crap on their phones and ipads. It's a sad state of affairs to be sure. The new generations + the rise of phone technology have ruined the internet for me personally. So it makes me glad when little bits of gold like your channel pop up.
I think what bugs me the most is how many older folks who grew up on the pre-social media internet and should know better by now get caught up in this crap too. Kids being angry and immature is natural (hell, I was a nihilistic edgelord as a teen), but when grown ass adults are doing it too it lowers the bar for everyone.
@@SwannyTheMike That's precisely what I'm referring to. Children are the biggest audience on youtube due to their free time and constant device usage so there's a big monetary incentive for the adult content creators to pander to them and their idea of entertainment. I wish it were different too but in our capitalist world it's the most sensible thing to pursue if you're a youtuber.
@@HyperRapid And it's things like that which make me glad that I've never been a very sensible person lol.
I enjoyed this review. Personally at the time I pirated the game (I had a potato PC so most games didn't run). The game barely ran on my system at launch but I loved it so much I bought the game to support the devs. I know some of the devs left and started the Metro series which I only have a little familiarity with.
